Hey, Paisanos! It's the YouTube Poop Fighting Game Creation Thread!
YouTube Poops have been a cornerstone of early Internet culture ever since their inception back in 2004 (which, ironically enough, precedes YouTube itself, which launched in 2005), and they've helped pioneer editing techniques and styles of humor used in meme and remix culture on the Internet to this day. Given the wide variety of meme sources popularized or associated with them, the idea of a YTP-themed crossover fighting game seems like it'd be incredibly fitting. So, I figured, why not try and create my own concept for such a game?

Now, as some of you are aware, this isn't my first attempt at this sort of idea. However, I decided to start a new thread for this idea because:
  1. The idea I had for the first thread was essentially "Super Smash Bros. but with YouTube Poop/Internet meme characters", which I feel has already been done by Smash Bros. Lawl and its numerous spinoffs. I'd like to try something different for this concept this time around.
  2. The thread itself is one I feel has suffered from several novice mistakes I've made in running it: adding too many submissions at once, too much focus on the fighter roster, certain jobs not being focused or specified enough... Overall, this idea is one that I felt could use a fresh start in a more refined thread.
With that out of the way, it's time to roll out our default fighters! Just like in my original thread, I chose characters that were too important to the history and culture of YouTube Poop to risk leaving out, only this time I went with 6 instead of 8. And here they are:
DR. ROBOTNIKMORSHUKING HARKINIANWEEGEEI.M. MEENDR. RABBIT

1683822173384.png
(Robotnik, Morshu, Harkinian, I.M. Meen, and Dr. Rabbit artwork made by MrTomPenguin.)

I'm also adding the Mushroom Kingdom (as seen in Hotel Mario's intro cutscene) as a default stage (though the exact layout will depend on the style of fighting game being made):

I want to make this hypothetical fighting game as much of an enjoyable experience and celebration of YTP's history as I possibly can, so your feedback and contributions are highly appreciated!

GAMEPLAY DETAILS
This game is a team-based 2D fighter, similar to the Marvel vs Capcom games and Skullgirls. Like in the latter game, players can choose how many fighters they want on their team prior to each match (max. 3), with the individual fighters being weaker the more of them are on the same team. Each fighter has 3 assist moves, with the one being used for that match chosen after the character is selected. Fighters on the same team can tag in and out with each other, allowing the inactive fighter(s) to recover some of their health while the active fighter continues the battle. Both assists and super moves are reliant on a 3-tiered super meter, with assists using up 1 tier of the meter and supers using up whatever tier of the meter matches their level (there is a cooldown period after each). If an opponent is K.O.d by a Level 3 super move, a Dramatic Finisher occurs, similar to the BlazBlue series or Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Alright, time to announce the first three jobs!

Job #1 - Gameplay Style
Job #2 - Base Roster Size
First, we should determine what kind of fighting game we're trying to make and how many fighters will be in the base roster, as those factors will help determine how future jobs are handled, particularly those involving fighters, gameplay and game modes.

For my own submission for Job #1, I'm going to suggest the 3v3 2D fighter style similar to the one used in the Marvel vs. Capcom series (particularly taking inspiration from MvC2 and UMvC3). I think that the fast-paced gameplay and powerful super moves would be a good fit for the chaotic nature of YouTube Poops.

For Job #2, I'm going to go with 40 characters. I feel this will give us enough space to include representation from both essential YTP sources and iconic YTPs and creators, without feeling too overwhelming.

Job #3 - Submit a Fighter from a New Source
Of course, I haven't forgotten that the main appeal of crossover fighting games is seeing which characters make it in, and there are plenty of prominent YTP sources still needing to be represented, so let's draw from some of those for our first fighter submissions! This job will add 2 fighters from sources not already represented on the roster, though they can still come from sources that come from the same franchise as a fighter on the roster (for example, characters from Hotel Mario and the Super Mario Bros. Super Show can still be submitted for this job despite Weegee being on the roster, as Weegee's specific source is the game Mario is Missing).

Game Style
I'd like to pitch a 1v1 2D fighter focus, much like a bunch of other fighting games. However, while a lot of those tend to be 2.5D (as in, 3D enviornments in a 2D gameplay plane), I'd like to go full 2D with this one to best suit the artstyle of not only a lot of the game's base cast, but also MUGEN, which is kind of like a YTP taken playable form.

I'm also gonna suggest a roster count of 32.

Finally, I'm gonna submit an old friend from the first go at this...
Fighter: Donald McDonald

I'm picking Donald due to his YTP presence being heavily linked to YTPMVs, moreso than any other character on the current roster. Just as in the MVs, the character is heavily based on his Japanese commercials (hence the name change) and would be a fast rushdown fighter with quick attacks to match the editing style of the MVs.

After much consideration, I've decided to bring back a fighter from my old thread for Job #3, and it just so happens to be the same one that I first submitted for it - Jack Black.

The lead vocalist and guitarist of Tenacious D himself, Jack Black is best known among the YTP community for his guest appearance on Sesame Street, where he and Elmo taught the audience about the word octagon, a shape that has 8 fantastic sides and 8 awesome angles.
Aside from that, he's also got a rather prolific music and acting career, even doing some voice acting work. Most recently, he's played Bowser in Illumination's Super Mario Bros. movie - complete with a new song befitting of the Koopa King:
He'd primarily take influence from his guest appearances on Sesame Street (as well as the YTPs and YTPMVs based on them) and his music career as half of Tenacious D (particularly as fantasized in the 2006 film "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny"), with a decent amount of nods toward other noteworthy projects he's been involved in.

Okay, here are the next jobs!

Job #4 - Title of the Game
Let's come up with an eye-catching title for this game! Something that truly defines the chaotic yet creative nature of YouTube Poops!

Job #5 - Stage Selection Size
How many stages should this game have? Given our range of options for the base roster size, I'd say 36 would be a decent amount.

Job #6 - Submit a Stage Related to a Fighter's Source
For this job, we'll be adding 3 stages that represent our current selection of fighters! These can be taken either directly from the fighter's source material, from other notable meme sources from that fighter's franchise, or from notable YTPs or YTPMVs they've been a part of.

When it comes to submitting stages for this game, here are a few things to keep in mind (these will apply for all stage submission jobs):
  • This game is a 2D team fighter similar to the Marvel vs. Capcom games, so stage layout isn't a factor here like it is in the Super Smash Bros. games.
  • Make sure to provide details for the set pieces and general look of the stage's background. Incorporating thematically appropriate elements from sources outside of the stage's main source is allowed.
    • Stages can include breakable set pieces like in the Street Fighter games (e.g. the Suzaku Castle signposts).
  • Stages can include a hazard or gimmick, which can be turned on or off prior to a match (breakable objects can also be turned off).
    • If fighters are K.O.d by a strong enough attack that knocks them in a certain direction on certain stages, a cinematic Stage Finisher occurs.
  • Each stage will have at least one music track to go with it, so submit music that would be a good fit for both the stage and the style of the game!
    • You can also submit music tracks that wouldn't necessarily be fitting by themselves but could be remixed to fit the game. In these cases, please specify that you want the track remixed. Of course, pre-existing remixes and mashups are also perfectly viable submissions!
    • Up to 6 music tracks can be submitted per stage.
  • Feel free to experiment with sources in order to come up with creative ideas for potential cameos and Easter eggs in the stage's background!
To give an example, let's use the Mushroom Kingdom stage added at launch:
Mushroom Kingdom (Hotel Mario)
1683999823586.png
Details: The general design is pretty much exactly as seen in Hotel Mario's iconic intro, though it does borrow a few elements from the DiC Mario cartoons, as a nod to how those two sources tended to overlap in early YouTube Poops. Specifically, King Koopa's Doomship from The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 can occasionally be seen flying across the sky, and some of the Toad designs used in the shows can be seen spectating in the background. The Mario Bros. themselves can also make cameo appearances, either heading towards the picnic that Princess Toadstool invited them to ("I hope she made lotsa spaghetti!") or being pursued by the Doomship ("I'd say he's hot on our tail!").
Breakable Object: Goombas will sometimes walk across the screen, and can be K.O.d for extra points if fighters attack or are knocked into them.
Hazard: When the Doomship is present, it will deploy Paragoombas to attack fighters from the air. These can be K.O.d just like regular Goombas.
Stage Finisher: If knocked to the right, the losing fighter will be knocked down a Warp Pipe, and end up in one of Bowser's seven Koopa Hotels as a permanent guest. "Where am I?"
Music:

Job #7 - Fighter Moveset Template
How should we design the movesets for this game? Please submit your ideas for this game's moveset template!

Robotropolis

Based on SatAM but with some AoStH touches - the sky, red and dramatic as it is, has the Spumconian (No, look it up, a lot of AoStH's staff were Spumco guys looking for work after Nickelodeon took over Ren & Stimpy) ink splats and abstract background AoStH is known for; the Robotnik statue is placed next to Robotnik's lair - the lair has been redesigned to look a little more... well, let's just say it's "nastier than a one-eyed snake". Robotnik propaganda is littered around, all with classic Robotnik injokes ("Snooping as Usual", "GAME! Boy. TRY IT!", "Pushy", a wanted sign for Arle Nadja, so on) and you can see a drenched yellow moon in the sky, as well as the occasional off-model robot baby falling from the sky. Despite the humorous context and vulgar imagery, it is genuinely a little off-putting around here...

  1. AoStH Robotnik theme
  2. Fastest Thing Alive
  3. Sonic 2 Boss
  4. Robotnik Rock
  5. Gangsta's Paradise (16-Bit)
  6. Pokey Means Business

EDIT: Heh, forgot this was a regular fighter and not a platform fighter

Meen's Labyrinth (I.M. Meen)

This very scary and confusing destination of Meen's choosing resembles how it apears in the final handful of cutscenes, pictured above. However, the scene is extended a bit to reveal two walls leading further into the labyrinth - You may even see Gnorris or one of Meen's frightening creatures peering through the doors.

Stage Finisher: If knocked to the left, the opponent will be launched into a bookshelf where Meen's magical book lands on their head, sucking them inside to the most unpleasant place they've ever seen... the magic labyrinth of I.M. Meen! ...wait, weren't we there already?

Music:
Control Layout
Personally, I'd go with light, medium, and heavy grounded, crouching, and air attacks, making for nine "normal" moves for each character. As for specials, they could have a dedicated button with six specials each (neutral, forward, back, up, and down). Of course, these would have dedicated command inputs as well, but I also want to implement a "simple" style similar to Smash and SF6. Also, each fighter gets three super moves.

Alright, here are the new stages being added through Job #6! I've got to say, these are some really great submissions!
On to Job #7, it looks like FazDude FazDude was the only one who submitted a moveset template, so that's what we'll be using for this game. I did make a few small adjustments, though:
  • Based on FazDude FazDude 's description, each character has 6 special moves, yet he only listed 5 different types (neutral, forward, back, up, and down). I'm assuming the 6th special move is one the fighter uses when in the air (if I'm wrong, please correct me).
  • I'm also interpreting the 3 super moves as involving the use of a 3-tiered super meter, with each tier of super move using up the corresponding amount of the meter. The meter is primarily built up through combat, but can also be built up in other ways (such as destroying breakable objects on stages).
    • Level 3 Supers are cinematic, and can result in a Dramatic Finish if used to K.O. an opponent.
  • I decided to include taunts, which I feel would be incredibly fitting for this kind of game.
  • EDIT: Felt that the moveset template was missing grab/throw attacks, so I added those in too. Just like in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, each character has front and back throw variants.
  • EDIT: Also added the 3 assists.
  • EDIT: Added entrance and victory animations.
  • EDIT: Added guard animations.

Since I seem to be the only one who voted on Job #4 (Title of the Game) and Job #5 (Stage Selection Size), I'll be keeping the voting period for these jobs open for now.
Now, here are the options for Jobs #4 and #5!
Job #4 (Game Title):
Job #5 (Number of Stages):

My own votes are Flushdown (Job #4) and 40 stages (Job #5).
Now, onto the next jobs...

Discussion #1 - Team Mechanics
This job is to help iron out the team mechanics for this game. I already have two mechanics from other games I'd like to implement: the assist mechanic from the Marvel vs. Capcom games and the team ratio mechanic from Skullgirls.
  • Assists: Each fighter has 3 different assists, and the specific assist used for each character is decided following the fighter's selection. Assists cost 1 tier of the super meter to use, and have a cooldown period before another one can be used.
  • Team Ratio: Before each match, players decide how many fighters they want on their team (1, 2, or 3). The greater the number of fighters on the team, the weaker each individual fighter will be.
I'd like to hear your feedback as to how I can improve and refine these mechanics (or remove them, if necessary), as well as your own ideas for this game's team mechanics.

Job #8 - Submit a Team Fortress 2 Fighter
Job #9 - Submit a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Fighter
1684119990357.png
1684120158586.png
For these next few fighter jobs, I'd like to add fighters from YTP sources that are too important to leave out, but have too many potential fighter choices to use for jobs alongside other sources they might overshadow. And I figured the best place to start was with these two Internet phenomenons released during YTP's heyday!

Job #8 (TF2 Character) - The Spy
1684126687485.png

This handsome rogue's ability to disguise himself as his enemy's teammates would make for an interesting playstyle in a team-based fighter such as this. Imagine trying to use an assist, only to end up being literally backstabbed by your supposed comrade. He could be any fighter on this roster! He could even be in this very room! He could be you, he could be me, he could even be-BOOM

Job #9 (MLP: FiM Character) - Fluttershy

1684135056512.png

It was a bit tricky to decide which of the Mane 6 to nominate for this job, but I ultimately settled on Fluttershy. Her kindhearted personality and natural shyness would be a hilariously fitting contrast to the chaotic and bombastic personalities currently on the roster, and her ability to communicate with and befriend wild animals could translate into an interesting playstyle involving them. "flutteryay"

TF2 - Heavy

He's kind of the mascot of the series, would be a heavyweight fighter using his iconic minigun AKA Sasha, boxing gloves, and his strength to fight.

MLP - Discord

His chaotic powers, reality warping, and shapeshifting would make him a pretty fun fighter to battle.

Job #8: The Pyro
Character Debut: "Team Fortress 2" (October 10th, 2007)

The Heavy fears no man, but that thing scares him, and that thing is none other than The Pyro, a pyromaniac who wants to see the BLU team burn down to the ground. His playstyle would have him use his trusty flame thrower, watching opponents being set on fire. After all, in Pyroland.. Does he believe in magic?

Job #9: Pinkie Pie
Character Debut: "Friendship is Magic: Part 1" (October 10th, 2010)

Speaking of magic, this pony is ready to bring surprise and fun to this YTP fighting game. Pinkie Pie, the pony who represents the Element of Laughter, is a hyperactive and crazy pony. Her moveset might contain references to the show, such as her pulling out a party cannon or summoning a bunch of Pinkie clones to aid her. Whatever she brings into this battle, she fills her heart with sunshine, sunshine!

I don't ever remember seeing this guy in a YTP, but I like his design, and I appreciate the guts of the MLP writers to just casually give an embodiment of evil a redemption arc. Plus his whole "chaos and trickery" deal fits YTP well.

Okay, here are the results of the votes for Job #4 and Job #5!

Job #4 (Game Title):
  • YouTube Poop: Gastric Distress (submitted by Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario ) - 1 vote
  • YouTube Poop: Flushdown (submitted by Northsouthmap Northsouthmap ) - 1 vote
  • YouTube Poop: The Bowel Movement (submitted by FazDude FazDude ) - 1 vote
Job #5 (Number of Stages):
  • 36 (submitted by me) - 1 vote
  • 40 (submitted by Northsouthmap Northsouthmap ) - 2 votes
It looks like we'll be having 40 stages in this game, but we'll have to revote on the game's name. I'm still going with Flushdown as my vote, as it feels the most fitting for a fighting game.

From the looks of it, everyone seems to be fine with the team mechanics I decided on for this game, so they're what we'll be using! Of course, I'd still like to hear any feedback you have regarding this game's mechanics, so that I can continue refining them.

And now, here are the submissions for Job #8 and Job #9!

Job #8 (Team Fortress 2 Fighter):
Job #9 (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Fighter):
For both of the two sources being voted on for this job, I feel they're prominent enough for two fighter spots on the base roster, but I haven't fully decided whether it would be best to get them out of the way now or wait until we've got some more sources represented on the roster. I've decided to settle this debacle via a StrawPoll: How many fighters should be added through Job #8 a... - Online Poll - StrawPoll.com

In the meantime, vote for your top 2 choices for each job! My own votes are:

Job #8 (Team Fortress 2 Fighter):
  • The Heavy
  • The Spy
Job #9 (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Fighter):
  • Pinkie Pie
  • Rainbow Dash
The next jobs are...

Job #10 - Submit a Spongebob Squarepants Fighter
I don't think I need to explain the cultural impact of Spongebob Squarepants (especially on the Internet), but for those curious, this video by former YTP creator EmpLemon should give you all the information you need to know.

Job #11 - Game Modes
What kind of extra modes do you think would be a good fit for this game? Please submit your ideas!

As always, I look forward to seeing your submissions!

Job #10 - Spongebob Squarepants

Just gonna get the most obvious one out of the way right now. Gameplay-wise, he'd probably be this game's all-rounder. HE'S READY!

Job #11 - Endless Mode
Keep fighting matches until you drop! The further you go, the stronger the opponents get!

1. The Heavy
2. The Scout

1. Pinkie Pie
2. Rainbow Dash

Mr. Krabs

Known for YTPs as Moar Krabs. He would use attacks around money and his claws.

Scroll Mode
The stage you are fighting on will change depending on who's fighting. Basically stage morph but Youtube themed.

Just wanted to make an announcement: this game now has a playlist! All stage music submitted so far has been added, plus 5 music tracks that will be used for this game's menu:
There will be another announcement regarding music submissions that will come with the results for Jobs #8 and #9, so stay tuned!

SpingeBill

I think all the submissions so far have, to say the least, not gone through a proper digestion process - therefore I propose this hideous beast: SpingeBill! Based on this fan... favourite? gross-up frame, his moveset would have YTP references of course, but probably also have a skin-ripping move inspired by Spengbab.
