Premise

Sony has, against all odds, decided that now is the right time for a Playstation All-Stars sequel, and they’ve tapped the users of SmashBoards to help with designing it! Aside from making it a bigger game in general, the main goal will be to address two of the most common complaints about the original game – the battle system (particularly the “only Supers kill” mechanic) and the roster (which was outside of the developers’ control for the actual game, due to a mix of poor timing and companies wanting to promote specific releases, but let’s pretend that this is an ideal scenario where everyone involved cooperates).

We’re also going to try coming up with modes for the game, to add more variety and fix some oversights from the original. (there wasn’t an option for 1 v 1 online – it was either 2 v 2 or free-for-all) One thing that gets praised often about the original game is the stages, so we’re definitely going to be expanding on that.

This is going to be fairly casual – it’s not like we need to write in-depth movesets with 30+ attacks. (though if you want to do that, feel free) It’s just for fun.

For those of you unfamiliar with PlayStation All-Stars, it was Sony’s attempt at having their own Smash Bros. game, more or less. It came out in 2012 on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Despite having various fighting game alumni such as Seth Killian and Omar Kendall working on the game, it released to fairly average reviews. However, demand still exists for a sequel, as people feel like the concept is solid and it was just the execution that was lacking.

The Roster

A total of six characters will be revealed in the game’s initial trailer at E3 (or a digital event that would take the place of E3) – four veterans and two newcomers. One of those veterans is going to be Kratos from God of War (though we’ll have a poll to determine which version of him is being used), whereas the others will be voted on.

The game’s final roster (barring DLC) will be roughly thirty-six characters – it’s one and a half times the amount that the previous game got, and similar to the jump from Melee’s roster size to Brawl’s roster size, so I figure it seems reasonable. Out of those characters, a third (12) or less will be third party – I realize that people will probably want more, given how heavily PlayStation is associated with third party franchises, but I didn’t want to go overboard, and I feel like that amount’s generous considering that it took Smash Bros. until Ultimate’s DLC to get that many third party characters (Hero was the twelfth one). Depending on how things go, the totals might be less or more than that, though either way, they’d have to be even numbers.

For the purposes of this, we’ll assume that all of the developers within Sony, and the third party companies that we ask, are okay with having their characters included, though for simplicity’s sake, we’re just sticking with characters that are owned by video game companies. I can’t see Disney allowing Spider-Man to be included in PlayStation All-Stars 2 without some massive strings attached. (as seen with games like Deadpool, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, etc. only being on digital storefronts for a few years before being removed)

The Stages

The original game had 16 stages, not counting the six training stages. We’ll see how it goes this time – I’m thinking 24 stages (multiplying the original amount by one and a half, like with the roster), but I’m open to suggestions. I’ll leave it open to whether or not stages could return, or parts of stages (ex. the crashing airplane from the Uncharted stage, but with a different game invading it), or whether they’d all be completely new.

Others

We’ll likely get into this later, rather than discussing it right away, but aside from changes to the gameplay (the KO method, at the very least – maybe other gameplay changes if it is felt that it’s needed) and additional modes, maybe we could come up with ideas for unlockables to add replay value. In the original game, most of the unlockables were profile pictures and background images, but I feel like so much more could be done there.

Gameplay changes:

Job #4:

Smash Bros. is an unorthodox fighting game. That does not mean Playstation All-stars must be as well. I think it should have a stamina-based K.O system. If the game must be different in some way, I would offer that each character may have weak spots/strong spots that affect how much damage they take. For example, Clank is a weak spot for Ratchet and Clank. That mechanic can be toggled in game settings. Hitting these areas are called 'Hard Hits' and 'Sorry Hits,' respectively. Falling or being launched off-screen results in death when the stage allows it.
I'll consolidate my control scheme suggestion here for simplicity.

Left Stick/D-Pad: Movement
Use left and right to move, and down to crouch. Some characters can crawl.

X: Jump
All characters can double jump. Some characters have additional jumps. Briefly tap the button, or press up on the D-Pad, to perform a short hop.
[ ]: Quick Attack
Hold or mash the button to repeat or auto-combo the attack.
/\: Power Attack
Hold the button to charge these attacks, and release to execute.
O: Special Attack
Attributes vary depending on the character.

L2: Block
Press the trigger lightly for a light shield, or press it down fully for a heavy shield.
The light shield surrounds the fighter, but only blocks Quick Attacks and weak Specials.
The heavy shield only covers attacks from the front, but can be angled up or down. It nullifies all attacks except for Supers.

R2: Supers
Light-press the trigger to charge Super energy, or press it all the way to use your strongest Super.
You can also use Level 1 supers at will by pressing Quick Attack while charging, so long as you have enough energy for one.

You can't move while shielding or charging, but you can dodge out by pressing left, down or right. Dodging out of a heavy shield is a bit slower.
You can't light-shield in the air; instead you'll perform a dodge. You can heavy-shield, but it will be narrower than a grounded heavy shield and pulling it out halts your momentum.

L1: Counter
A risky alternative to shielding, which can also be executed by pressing Power Attack during a heavy shield. Your shield will briefly flash red as your character takes a countering stance. If an attack hits the shield during the flash, your character performs a counterattack. If the counter fails, you'll briefly be left wide open as your shield flickers out.

R1: Grab
A tool to punish shields and counters, which can also be executed by pressing Quick Attack while shielding. Your character will attempt to grab an opponent. If the grab is successful, you can press Quick or Power Attack to perform a quick or strong pummel respectively, or tilt the Left Stick/D-Pad to throw the opponent.
You can't perform grabs in the air; instead, you'll perform a dodge.

Right Stick: Throw
An alternative method of grabbing. Upon a successful grab, your character immediately throws the opponent in the direction you tilted the Right Stick.

Touchpad: Taunts
Swipe the touchpad in a direction to perform a taunt. When playing online, click the touchpad to access a quick-chat menu.

Item Use
Pick up an item with the Quick Attack or Grab buttons. Some items activate instantly or are equipped passively. Most items remain held: Press Quick Attack or Power Attack to use the item in different ways. To discard the item, press R1 to drop it, or tilt the Right Stick to throw it.
Arcade Mode:
  1. A 1 vs 1 stock battle on the player character's home stage. Hazards and items are off.
  2. A 2 vs 1 stock battle on any stage where the player is assisted by another character. Items are on but hazards are off.
  3. A 2 vs 2 time battle on any stage. Hazards and items are on.
  4. A 4 player battle royale time battle on any stage. Hazards and items are on.
  5. A 1 vs 3 time battle on rival's home stage. Items are off but hazards are on.
  6. Bonus round
  7. Rivalry battle on a neutral stage. Items are on.
  8. Boss Battle (the game will have multiple bosses, similar to Smash Bros. Ultimate's classic mode)
Arcade Mode bosses:
1. Polygon Man
2. Clockwerk (Sly Cooper)
3. Mundus (Devil May Cry)
4. Vex (LittleBigPlanet)
5. Hades (God of War)
6. Goliath (Ape Escape)
7. Zarok (MediEvil)
8. Zeikfried (Wild ARMs)

CURRENCY
All-Stars 2 could have two types of general currency earned through playing any mode: Coins, a general purpose currency, and Emblems, a fighter-specific currency with variants unique to each fighter.
Coins may be used to buy most collectables and certain types of gear. Emblems may be used to buy collectibles and gear relevant to the respective fighter.
Exchange: There is a direct correlation between the value of coins and emblems. You can buy emblems directly with an equal value of coins, but the emblems you get will be random. You can also exchange emblems for coins, but you will lose a slight amount of value in the exchange.
COLLECTABLES
Memories:
Memories are 3D models of important characters, objects, settings and events in the games of the All-Stars and the Playstation catalogue in general. Each model has a brief animation, akin to a PS2 save, and a low-res icon, akin to a PS1 save. They also come with brief text bios.
Tracks: Music from the games of the All-Stars and the Playstation catalogue in general. These tracks can be played in the Music player, and groovier tracks may be accompanied by a dancing fighter.
Videos: Various videos associated with Playstation and the All-Stars, including: story cutscenes, fighter interviews, replay showcases, trailers for classic Playstation consoles and games, and more!

GEAR
Minions
: Chibified support characters make a return to cheer on their fighter in battle. There's also a special mode where you can train your minions to grow stronger, fight other minions, and even support your fighter with power-ups in an exclusive battle event.
Taunts: Special animations with no practical battle applications, used to express personality. Each fighter starts with one, but you can buy many more and equip up to 5 at once.
Panels: A custom appearance of the fighter HUD. The color and shape of the health bars and Super meter will never change, but the surrounding elements can be incredibly diverse.
Quotes: Brief phrases which accompany a taunt, or at the start and finish of a battle, when playing online. Generic phrases are available from the start, but more iconic phrases from Playstation history may be purchased.
Skins: Total cosmetic overhauls of a character, ranging from a palette swap to an entirely new character. Four skins are available by default, with plenty more to unlock for each character.
Voices: Some fighters are voiced in multiple languages, and a few have more than one voice in a single language! You can set each fighter's voice individually.
The voice you choose is the voice your online opponent hears, even if they set a different language! (There is an option to force all voices to your own settings.)

Collectables will be made available at random in the game's shop. Gear may be purchased directly in the Customisation menu, although the shop will highlight a couple of Gear items. Some items require Emblems from multiple fighters, and some items cannot be purchased at all, only unlocked.

UNLOCKABLES
All-Stars 2 could have features that require effort to unlock.
Roster: Only 15 fighters are available at the start of the game: the six fighters revealed at launch, and a fighter from each remaining rival pair. The remaining fighters may be unlocked in Story Mode, or by using their rival in the game's other modes. In the latter case, the unlock conditions are varied, but can be fulfilled with any fighter who has yet to unlock their rival.
Stages: Almost all of the stages require unlocking, but most are easy to unlock. Usually all you need to do is use a character's Level 3 Super.

STORY MODE:

An idea that I have is taking a similar route to Mortal Kombat or Injustice, where the game focuses on a different character every few matches, with cutscenes in between. The focus would be spread between 10-12 characters rather than the entire roster, with someone like Kratos (who would likely want to be left out of all of this) being saved for near the end, if not the very end.

I figure that a lot of PlayStation’s games try to take on a more cinematic approach (even Ratchet and Clank resembles a Pixar movie nowadays), so this would be a good way to take advantage of that type of story-telling and set it apart from Smash Bros. (where very few characters speak, so any story is largely told through their actions). Mind you, not every character is built for this method of storytelling (Toro or Crash, for example), but their chapters could serve as comedic relief. (I figure that those two, at least, would almost need to have a chapter, since Toro's a company mascot and Crash is heavily associated with the brand)
I agree with Megadoomer Megadoomer that, with this being Sony, the story mode should follow their design philosophy and be very cinematic and story-focused. Mortal Kombat is a good template.

One mechanic I think could be interesting, provide replayability, etc, is to have multiple story paths. At key points in the story, you can pick between two different opponents, and the options lead to branching storylines. That would allow us to have a focused, Mortal Kombat-esque plot while still allowing the majority of the roster to be playable in it. It wouldn't be too complex, and sometimes different paths would reconverge eventually, but there would still be ~6 different endings.
Story Mode bosses (Fusion bosses - either two characters fused together or two characters working together):
1. Vexed Corruptor (a machine from Horizon Zero Dawn being corrupted by Vex from LittleBigPlanet)
2. Feral Ogre (Ogre from Tekken absorbing Father Gascoigne from Bloodborne)
3. MAWLUS (fusion of Malus from Shadow of the Colossus and MAWLR from Killzone)
4. Nefarious Cortex (Dr. Nefarious and Dr. Cortex piloting a machine)
5. Riptongandr (Ripto from Spyro fused with the Jormungandr/world serpent from God of War)

New Game Modes:

Our first job will be voting for the three veterans that will be included in the announcement. Aside from Kratos, the veterans include (in order of their first appearance):

  • Heihachi Mishima (Tekken)
  • Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal)
  • PaRappa the Rapper
  • Sir Daniel Fortesque (MediEvil)
  • Spike (Ape Escape)
  • Toro (Doko Demo Issyo)
  • Dante (Devil May Cry) (much like with Kratos, if he gets in, we’d vote on what game he’d be based on)
  • Raiden (Metal Gear)
  • Jak and Daxter
  • Sly Cooper
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • Zeus (God of War)
  • Big Daddy (BioShock)
  • Nariko (Heavenly Sword)
  • Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
  • Isaac Clarke (Dead Space)
  • Sackboy (LittleBigPlanet)
  • Colonel Radec (Killzone)
  • Cole McGrath (inFamous)
  • Evil Cole McGrath (inFamous)
  • Fat Princess
  • Kat (Gravity Rush)
  • Emmett Graves (Starhawk)

Each person will vote for three characters, with their first choice getting three points, their second choice getting two points, and their third choice getting one point. The top three characters overall will be in the announcement trailer along with Kratos.

To give an example, my vote would be:

-Dante
-Heihachi
-Nathan Drake

That would mean that Dante (from any Devil May Cry game, not just the reboot) would get 3 points, Heihachi gets 2 points, and Nathan Drake gets 1 point. I’ll see how much interest there is in this topic, but I’ll give it roughly a day or two for people to vote.

Also, you can vote here to determine whether Kratos will be based on the games set in Greek mythology or the games set in Norse mythology: https://www.strawpoll.me/42885693

That's a cool idea, I've been wondering if anyone would try their hand at it with all the other forum games going around.

My announcement trailer veterans choices are:
  1. Kat
  2. Ratchet and Clank
  3. Sackboy

1. Ratchet and Clank
2. Nathan Drake
3. Sackboy

These three are what I could consider to be the biggest first-party characters after Kratos in the original roster - the absolute barest of essentials in PS All-Stars. I ranked them based on how I would order them in priority

Was really close to voting Parappa, cuz he's one of my favs, but I think these three are some of the key essentials

Honorable mentions to everyone except Evil Cole McGrath, Cole McGrath is fine but why'd he need an evil version, why do you need to exist Evil Cole McGrath.

If we're gonma go by Gens:
Parappa (PS1)
Kratos (PS2)
SackBoy (PS3) (already included)
And then Kat for PS Handhelds
Do you have a preference for who you'd want more between PaRappa, Sackboy, and Kat? (Kratos is already in the game) Otherwise, I'll just go from top to bottom, with PaRappa getting 3 points and Kat getting 1 point.

Would love for War of the Monsters to at least have some stage representation.

And if any character works if it were to have one it's Kineticlops as he's not a physical being so can easily be downsized and was also a guest in Downhill Domination.

Raven from Gravity Rush should also be a playable character. Dad Kratos should be used with Atreus as support.

1. Parappa
2. Kat
3. Nathan Drake

If the newcomers are Aloy from Horizon and Hatapon from Patapon, then the trailer will have featured one character from each major Playstation system before the PS5.

Oof, you really got me with that trailer. Anyways, here's my votes!

1. Nathan Drake (He's been out of action since 2016's A Thief's End, it makes sense for him to come back now as an initial reveal)
2. Sackboy (He's basically the Playstation mascot, gotta have him)
3. Ratchet And Clank (Great way to promote the upcoming PS5 title)

1. Kat (Japan Studio has entered it's twilight but let's never forget the Gravity Queen)
2. Ratchet and Clank (Never completed the games but I've always like the characters)
3. Kratos (with a more 2018 influence on his moves)

Interested in seeing how it goes. Especially with seeing certain franchises like Team Ico, Gran Turismo and such in stage or characters.........

Did you have anyone else in mind for the third pick? I included Kratos right off the bat. (though there's a StrawPoll for whether his moves stay the same or change to be based on the 2018 game)

I'm still getting a feel for how long to leave this open before moving on to the next thing, but I think I'll go with 8 pm tonight (so twelve hours from now). A day and a half seems like a good amount.

As of now, Sackboy's got the most points, but second and third are pretty close between four characters. (I'm not sure if I should bring up the standings so far or leave people in suspense, but I figure it's easy enough to count out the votes) If there's a tie, I'll have a separate vote to settle that in addition to the next part. (which, in this case, would be nominating the newcomers)

Lesson learned: 36 hours is too much time for this. (I wasn't sure if people were going to post here throughout the day, and I figured the results were close enough that two other people voting could have completely changed the outcome) I'll stick to roughly a day from now on, unless it's consistently busy up to the end.

The final results are:

-Sweet Tooth: 0
-Spike: 0
-Raiden: 0
-Zeus: 0
-Nariko: 0
-Isaac Clarke: 0
-Evil Cole: 0
-Fat Princess: 0
-Emmett Graves: 0
-Good Cole: 1
-Toro: 2
-Jak and Daxter: 2
-Sly Cooper: 2
-Sir Daniel: 4
-Colonel Radec: 4
-Big Daddy: 5
-Heihachi: 6
-Dante: 8
-Ratchet and Clank: 15
-Kat: 15
-PaRappa: 18
-Nathan Drake: 21
-Sackboy: 29

With that, our first three returning veterans (aside from Kratos) are PaRappa, Nathan Drake, and Sackboy! Also, the poll results for Kratos are pretty clear, so Kratos will be getting his look/abilities from the PS4 God of War game (bearded Kratos/Dad of Boy). We'll talk about his moveset changes later.

---

Next up is the part that I'm sure people have been looking forward to: the newcomers.

Obviously, a big part of what will make the game (or any crossover game) appealing is the new characters. We’ll be ranking them like last time, though unlike last time, we’ll be nominating characters beforehand since we don’t have a pre-existing list to work from. When it comes to voting (which will come afterwards), you can only put your own nominations in third place to minimize the impact of people voting for their own nominations. Also, it helps to put a write-up to explain who the character is and/or why they should be included.

As an example, here’s my nomination:

Solid Snake

Game(s): Metal Gear Solid (1998), Metal Gear Solid 2 (2001), Metal Gear Solid 4 (2008)

The main protagonist of the Metal Gear games, Solid Snake is a former spy, special operations soldier, and mercenary who is tasked with infiltrating various exotic locations to stop giant robots called “Metal Gears” that are often armed with nuclear weapons. In addition to how Snake plays in Smash Bros. (using close quarters combat and explosives), he could take advantage of PlayStation All Stars’ laxer stance on guns to incorporate M9 tranquilizer pistols, FAMAS rifles, and sniper rifles into his moveset.

The Metal Gear Solid series has heavy ties to PlayStation, with 1-3 starting out as PlayStation exclusives and Metal Gear Solid 4 still being exclusive to the PS3, and it’s generally lauded as an outstanding franchise that pushes technical boundaries and encourages creativity and outside-the-box thinking. (and also inside-the-box thinking) While Raiden is already a PlayStation All Stars veteran, there’s nothing saying that we can’t have both Snake and Raiden included in a sequel.

---

We'll keep nominations open for about a day, and then once those are finalized, we'll vote like we did with the veterans. The top two characters will be part of the initial reveal. (though there will be plenty of opportunities for characters that don't make it in here to get in afterwards)

Crash Bandicoot
This wacky spinning marsupial is one of Sony's iconic characters in gaming with his first game that came out way back in 1996, he has become a pretty popular character with Crash 4 being released last year, I think it would be cool to see him fight Big Daddy, freaking Kratos and PaRappa.

Newcomer Nomination: Astro Bot

one of Playstation's more recent mascots, Astro Bot was essentially the poster boy for the PSVR, as well as having a game coming predownloaded into the PS5. He would help represent a newer generation of Sony games and would I think he would be a perfect fit for a platform fighter.

Newcomer nomination:
Mister Mosquito

This character could never possibly win the vote, but I'm gonna submit him anyway because why not? Mister Mosquito is a strange, weirdly perverse PS2-exclusive game about sucking blood from a family. Its protagonist could make an interesting inclusion for a fighting game - he could suck blood from his enemies and fly around the stage for one thing, but he could also use some original, bug-themed attacks. His reveal could highlight that the unusual roster choices of the first PSASBR aren't going anywhere. His stage could be... well, look up gameplay footage and you'll have a decent idea. We'd have to censor it somehow (using a male family member would probably be the best way), but fighting on a giant human does sound fun.

Job #2 (I know this isn't a job number system, but it's too familiar that I'll use it even if not assigned, it's confortable and safe for me): Yu Narukami
1617412080264.png

Yu Narukami is the Sister-Complex Kingpin of Steel from Inaba, who has more than a valid representation on PlayStation consoles. Appearing on PlayStation exclusive Persona 4, and Persona 4 Dancing, Yu is definitely one of the most liked protagonists in the series for being a chad and being such a jerk for a nice person (if that makes sense). Persona is a series that has a long and devoted history to Sony, that is also popular, that I think it has an easy case to make for having a second fighter, but for now I'd say Yu Narukami can be a good representative if we only have 1 fighter. As to why Yu over Joker, I'd say it mainly comes down to the fact that Persona 4 had the better dancing game... what, did you expect me to say something else?

My nomination is Sly Cooper's Bentley:

1617419494395.png

Bentley is the 'brains' behind the Cooper gang's capers. He is a turtle confined physically by his wheelchair, but intellectually by nothing. He aids Sly by hacking into computer mainframes, providing intel on heists, and even partaking in missions himself! Do not be fooled by the wheelchair, as it is oufitted with thrusters, mechanical arms, and explosives. Bentley is also skilled in using blow darts, and he can attack using the wheels on his wheelchair. This is one turtle not to be underestimated!

My nomination is Hatapon, from Patapon (PSP)
Hatapon.png
Hatapon is the core of the Patapon army; the conduit through which the Patapon God Almighty (that's the player) commands the Patapons by way of specific drum patterns. There are many different types of Patapon, but Hatapon is always there to lead them to victory.

In Playstation All-Stars, Hatapon takes on a role similar to Olimar or Fat Princess. Hatapon doesn't attack directly, aside from a couple of highly ineffective swings with his flag. Instead, he summons the different classes of Patapon to perform their attacks: spear-throwing Yaripons, shield-bearing Tatepons, horse-riding Kibapons and many others!

For his supers, Hatapon can bring down the wrath of Almighty with a storm miracle, call upon the might of the Heropons, or band together with the Zigotons and Karmens to overwhelm the enemy with sheer numbers!

With the strength of the Patapon and the will of the Almighty, Hatapon will bring a unique style to the world of PlayStation All-Stars 2!

My character suggestion is Lara Croft from Tomb Raider.
1617434768907.png

Alongside Samus Aran and Chun-Li, Lara Croft is one of the first popular female protagonists in video game history, and considering her franchise having partially originated on the PlayStation and being mostly exclusive to it, I think she fits into this game perfectly. Her moveset could easily be a combo of her classic and modern appearances, although I'm fairly convinced she would use her modern design by default and the classic design as an alternate costume.

Plus, I'd love to see her interact with Nathan and Sly.
