Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

If the rumors are true, this could possibly be our final roster. How would you rate it from a scale from 1 to 10?

I would personally give it a good 8/10. I'm not crazy about a couple additions, but overall, characters like Inkling, the Belmonts, Isabelle, Ken and Incineroar are making me pretty excited to play..
5/10 (ignoring returning characters). Not many new things to the game other than Simon and Inkling (+ Ridley's down B) compared to Smash 4. I still think Isabelle fits better as an Assist, as much as I like her. While Incineroar may turn out to be cool, Zeraora, Lycanroc, Decidueye, Mimikyu, Tapu Koko or Golisopod would be better. K.rool and Ridley are nice additions and good representation of their characters, but they're not as interesting mechanic-wise as most of the Smash 4 newcomers. 5 Echoes + a semi clone means that the majority of the newcomers would be a form of clones, too.
It also means that some of the playable franchises' growth wouldn't be represented (at least in base roster), like Xenoblade's growth from an almost Japan exclusive to million seller. There's also no retro/surprise character. The third party characters also far short when compared to 4's massive names like Pac-Man and Mega Man.

If DLC added:
  1. A Xenoblade character
  2. A retro character
  3. A third party related to a new partnership (Steve/dude from Skyrim/Doomguy)
  4. A character from Nintendo's mobile department (Fjorm, Euden, etc.)
  5. A series revival (think Pit in Brawl leading to Uprising. Isaac could fill this nicely)
Then I would give it a 10/10

Personally, I'm only interested in Chrom, the Belmonts and Inkling (and maaybe Ridley), but since Everyone is here! I'm inclined to give the full roster a 12/10

SO if the off chance (as dlc) koei tecmo got a rep in smash from one of the Warriors games, which would it be. Lu Bu or Nobunaga..

Also would it be weird to have characters based on real people who actually existed in the world in history as portrayed within a video game in smash? I mean at a stretch we got Dracula as a boss whos based on Vlad III Tepes.

Edit: Fun Fact: Heir to the Throne Prince Charles is a Descendant of Vlad III. Who knew.
It better not be Nobunaga.

He should be a Pokemon Conquest Rep.

It gives me strength. I would not be nearly as diplomatic on this site if I was a fan of any other character :yoshi:
O RLY? It may give you strength, but it is still a double edged sword. Them Yoshis would lose with or without your support. :troll:

Anyways, what kind of character nerfs or buff would you all like to see?

Full Roster: 10/10, as everybody says. Not a *perfect* 10, but it was the best decision to bring everyone back--it was the perfect opportunity at the right time and I'm glad Sakurai seized that opportunity.

Newcomers: 5/10. This is obviously subjective, and I've been kinda unlucky in that no newcomer has appealed to me personally. But it goes to how great everyone being back is--there's very few characters I can think of adding in addition to what we already have. The echoes are the most disappointing aspect of the newcomers, and I feel certain characters are out of obligation rather than adding anything actually new. If this is it, I'll be looking forward more for DLC than the newbies (the opposite I had with Smash 4), but... Not sure what else I can say, other than glad everyone else is back.

I remember having trouble with the final event in Melee, against Ganondorf, Mewtwo, and Giga Bowser, and then I won when I used JigglyPuff, maybe after a couple of times.

I doubt he'll get more speed, considering that's what Toon Link and Young Link are for.

I'm a bit worried about his recovery though. Before Ultimate, if you didn't want to use his up special, you could always tether grab onto a ledge. Not to mention, there was also that neat trick about holding a lit bomb, using his up special, the bomb exploding to give you some air and lets you re-use his up special.
Know he has no tether grab now, but I'm not sure how the un-timed mechanics of Link's bomb will affect the second thing.
I'm not really wishing for speed at their levels. More close or in-between Ike and Mario, for instance. Did you know Link and YL had the same air speed in Melee, until Sakurai decided to nerf it hard for no reason in Brawl? His already poor running speed from 64 to Melee also got nerfed for no reason, as far as I'm concerned. I wonder where he would be if his mobility was never nerfed, honestly.

Edit: His air speed was the 6-7th best in Melee.

No Shadow in Smash would be a massive oof...so for now it would get an 8/10 for when it comes to the newcomers (Inceneroar ain’t a priority for me)

His racket being his Sword, and his Special Shot the Warlock Punch. Bam
Nah just flick it back with his cape.

Special shot is him gathering a bunch of tennis balls into a huge tennis ball above his head and then tossing it at you.

Can you try to give me a reason to like Inkling? I still hold the unpopular opinion that they are boring, and I can't help it.
They're adorable, number one.

Number two is that they're so unique. Not only are they squids who've evolved to the point where they have their own culture, that culture is pretty cool as well. They also can't survive in water, which is pretty funny considering they're ancestors.

They're adorable

They're designs are pretty great. I love sea animals and these kids are basically sea animals without the sea. The whole Splatoon series has a great sense of style.

They're fresh (pun intended). They're the newest Nintendo ip in Smash, after only three years of existing! They've definitely earned their spot.

They're language is the best.
WOOMY

They're play style is incredibly interesting. There's no other fighter quite like them.

Did I mention they're adorable?

I’m so glad Bayonetta was nerfed. Now I can enjoy playing as her without feeling like that person that picks Bayonetta

It's probably gonna be :ultinkling:
Looking at gameplay footage, they seem a bit OP. Not that's a bad thing necessarily.
I'm not quite sure about that. What I think will really make or break them in the end is how much of a hinderance the ink refilling could potentially be. I feel like it could really hurt them against certain characters, honestly.

If I had to guess where Inklings will end up...I could see them being pretty well off, maybe high mid-tier or slightly above. I definitely don't think they'll be bad, but I'm not sure about thinking they'll be the best of the best. Time will tell, I suppose.

I beg to differ!!!
Yeah, they're still doomed. That's nothing compared to a bomb from the sky.

I say they are overrated, but only by a little bit. Otherwise, I must admit, they are very cool.

Meanwhile, Link tries to style on everyone by trying to hit it back using a bottle instead of a racket.

Question to Splatoon fans. What's the difference between Inkling and Octoling? I know people request them as an echo and have a whole DLC centered around them. I just don't get it.

Inklings are Squids.
Octolings are Octopodes.

The biggest difference is the design, and the lore. Gameplay wise they both use ink the same way.

You see, my thing is that I find different things adorable (maybe I don't like their faces). I guess maybe their clothes and weapons are cool, but I don't feel connected to them still.

The inner machinations of my mind envelop many morbid fascinations, and I find darker things appealing. I'm a unique one.

They're functionally the same in Splatoon but are different personality-wise (different animations therefore being an echo) and obviously via the lore. I'd even go as far as say they could potentially *not* be an echo, and just use different weaponry from the vast available in Splatoon.

Octoling weaponry is geared more slower but powerful versions.

Also in splat 1 they were terminators which was pretty damn cool.

Number two, I suppose that's fair. Not everyone's gonna find the same things cute. I love animals, fun designs, cute things, and the ocean.
The Inklings are all those things rolled into one, so they appeal to me.

Haven't heard back from the timer site...interestingly enough it seems they took down the direct date timer.

Very suspicious but it's probably just the fact that a staffer approved it by mistake and not an inside track knowledge kind of thing.

Anything new while I was gone?

I think that mainly comes down to the Zelda brand plastered on it. Take that away and it would have gotten just as mixed reviews... Warriors is a Love it or Hate it kind of deal..
I don't think it has to do with the Zelda brand-naming, rather, the absolute mess that Koei Tecmo has done with the franchise, practically pumping out 10 Warriors games a year.

Excuse me but what is this rumor I'm hearing about everyone has been revealed already and not getting anymore newcomers? I wasn't here because I took my dog for a walk.
