Smash Recapps - PAX, 2GGT: The False Awakens, Niconico Championships, Boss Battle #1, and More!

Welcome to our first ever Smash Recapps! Every weekend there are many Smash tournaments taking place, and sometimes it's hard to catch all the action. Smash Recapps is here to help, compiling the biggest moments from the biggest tournaments and putting them in one convenient place so readers can catch up on Smash. Ready for the biggest moments from the weekend? Let's get started!

PAX Arena @ PAX South

This tournament, announced at the last minute, surely did not disappoint. On the Smash 4 side of things, the event reached its entrant cap and some incredible talent was set to attend. While not making the top 8, Mew2King showed some incredible play with Cloud: watch out, he's leveling up in Smash 4. Despite having three Sheik mains within the top three, we still saw a lot of character variety with Vinnie choosing to use his Rosalina and Luma and ZeRo going to Diddy Kong as he often does instead of playing the Sheik ditto. FOW had to bring out his Falco in order to avoid the Ness vs Rosalina and Luma matchup, though it did not work, unfortunately. Jbandrew also surprised many, taking Meta Knight and making an impressive run through top players to tie for 5th. Here is the top 8 for Smash 4 with the characters they used during that section of the tournament:

1) ZeRo :4diddy::4sheik:
2) VoiD :4sheik:
3) Vinnie :4sheik::rosalina:
4) FOW :4ness::4falco:
5) Jbandrew :4metaknight:
5) ANTi :4mario::rosalina:
7) NAKAT :4ness::4lucas:
7) ESAM :4pikachu:

Melee saw just as much excitement, with the chance to see Hungrybox yet again take on Mang0 after their intense set at Genesis 3. But this time, Hungrybox came out on top. Axe would take down Mew2King in an upset for the second time and Wizzrobe managed to take down SoCal powerhouses like S2J and Lucky while even managing to almost beat Westballz in a close set. Here is the Melee top 8 for PAX Arena @ PAX South:

1) Hungrybox :jigglypuffmelee:
2) Mang0 :foxmelee:/:falcomelee:
3) Westballz :falcomelee:/:foxmelee:
4) Axe :pikachumelee:
5) Wizzrobe :falconmelee:
5) Mew2King :sheikmelee:/:marthmelee:/:peachmelee:/:foxmelee:
7) S2J :falconmelee:
7) SFAT :foxmelee:

2GGT: The False Awakens

With over 200 total entrants and all of SoCal's finest not competing at PAX Arena, 2GGT: The False Awakens was set to be an incredible tournament. SoCal had to defend against these visitors and show how stacked a region they really are. Before the top four took place, however, there was a Ryu round robin with commentary by Alex Valle, Mr. Street Fighter himself. In the end, Trela came out on top, winning a special fight stick! As for the main tournament, Tyrant and Larry Lurr were able to hold down the fort and keep SoCal on top. Here are the top 4 results:

1) Tyrant :4metaknight:
2) False :4ryu:/:4sheik:
3) Larry Lurr :substitute: (Lots of Characters)
4) Trela :4ryu:

NicoNico Championships

Six of Japan's finest players came together to compete on a grand stage, with Sakurai himself coming to watch! Japan was not alone, however, as Nairo came to represent the United States in the bracket. An exhibition took place showing off Corrin and Bayonetta, with their official release dates finally being announced. Simply put: this event was incredibly exciting.

The matches and results themselves were no less surprising. In a shocking contrast to his placement at Genesis 3, Ranai ended up dead last at 7th place, losing to both Komorikiri and SH. Komorikiri would go farther into the bracket before being defeated by Nairo and Abadango, who both made it to the grand finals. Another surprising upset took place as well, with Abadango taking home a 1st place win. Here are the results for the top 8:

1) Abadango :4metaknight:
2) Nairo :4zss:
3) Komorikiri :4cloud:
4) Shu :4sheik:
5) Choco :4zss:
5) SH :4fox:
7) Ranai :4villager:

Boss Battle #1

Smash 64 had its own share of excitement over the weekend as national talent poured in to compete at Boss Battle #1 in Indianapolis. Players came from Ohio, Wisconsin, Texas, Colorado, Maryland, California, and more to compete, and as always, Smash 64 showed why the game keeps on seeing play despite its age. The full results of the bracket are available here.

This is the first time an article like this has sprung up with a worrying lack of Project M being mentioned at all, despite some really good play and stacked tournaments this weekend.

Otherwise, good show. This is a really solid idea, and really good for the community to more easily keep tabs on the best players.
