Current Project - In Sitting

We have some good feedback from the survey to analyse, and with the announcement of the next patch on 4/2/16, the senate is now in sitting. For those unfamiliar with political terminology, this means that we're currently discussing and negotiating the next version of the ruleset. We hope to have the next version of the ruleset finalised soon after the patch is released.

If you haven't filled out the feedback survey yet, it's not too late! You can find it here:

Hi all, and welcome to the communications thread for the Smash 4 Senate!

Founded on 1/12/2015, the Smash 4 Senate (otherwise known as the Australian Ruleset Committee) is a group of Tournament Organisers and top players from each region around the country. The primary goal of this group is to create a unified nationwide ruleset for Smash 4.

The main purpose of this thread is to communicate important information about senate discussions. This may include information such as official rulesets or feedback surveys.

This week, the senate has voted to change our ruling on Omega stages and Miiverse. These stages are now considered banned.

Since this was considered a minor issue (in contrast to, for example, the legality of Duck Hunt), a ruling was achieved by a simple majority vote. For larger changes, we will require a more thorough verdict with agreement from each state.

The reasoning behind this change is twofold:

1. It simplifies the ruleset. Having one ruling on these stages for game 1, and a separate ruling on these stages for later games is not necessary; we can simply globally enforce the FD/BF standard without really changing very much.

2. Certain omega stages do in fact have different properties to FD, and standardising these is helpful. The most notable property is ledge shape, but this is not the only one. For example, some stages have visibility issues with certain moves such as Greninja's Shadow Sneak or Villager's Timber (seedling). Also, the stages which compress the 3D collision detection of the game into the 2D plane retain this property in their omega form, which is problematic. Banning specific omega stages was something we wanted to avoid as it would add additional complexity to the ruleset (see point 1).

If you prefer to play on an omega stage, you are more than welcome to ask your opponent to do so. Some players have an aversion to Final Destination as they find the background distracting at times, so please be respectful of this and try to compromise with your opponent. However, if your opponent wishes to enforce the ruleset as written, you may not take them to an omega stage.

The senate may reconsider this ruling after the end of the trial period. A quick update - the trial period is currently due to run until the end of January, to allow all regions ample time to run this ruleset at a number of events. This also gives players who do not attend every event a chance to experience it. We look forward to hearing your feedback at the end of the trial period!
