Skill Level of Normal Smashers?

This question has undoubtedly been brought up before but I haven't seen it in the past couple pages so I thought I'd ask, how good is the average smasher? Obviously this is a difficult question to answer but it's difficult to see how I compare to the Smash Universe, as the majority of recorded material is of top tier players. I guess what I want to know is, if I walked around a local tournament and watched people play, what would they have in their arsenal?

Depends largely on region and your definition of average smasher. A normal smasher should be comfortable with L-cancelling and wavedashing at the very least, then possibly more depending on their character.

Wavedashing works better throught and short hop.

The average player has good movement, doesn't awkwardly throw out moves that often, know their thunders combo etc...for the most part seem to know what they are doing..

Average players are awful. Once you get around top 32 in the world, the players start to get kinda decent at the game.

The average player has enough skill to beat your ass if you are asking this question.

Very succinct, thank you! I just wanted to have a rough idea of how much ***-beating I should expect when attending a local.

No problem man, it's a rite of passage to get spanked by every average player in the room at your first tourney. It will happen. Don't focus on winning, focus on learning. You won't win much at your first tourney. It happens to all of us, and it will only make you better.

Sorry for the bluntness, but that's how it is. I went in to my first tourney cocky as all hell, and got 2-0'd twice. Everyone there just abused me. It's all about getting used to tournament play and learning a ton. Find someone who shares your main, and rack their brain about all of your hardest matchups. Absorb what they have to say, and try to apply it to some degree before you leave.

Best of luck!

I remember the first Melee tournament I went to. It was Northwest Manifest and I was laughing all fu*king day because of how hard I was getting wrecked. I had never seen people play so well in person, it was ridiculous.

It depends where you are and how you define average. There are so many levels of play at this game. At my first tournament I got 2nd of 4 in my pool and beat over half the players there. This was in a weaker region, however (Philly). I lose to the majority of smashers in stronger regions. Also I had been playing at a little higher level than your average first tournament goer at my first tourney. This question is too subjective to give good feedback. Just go to a local and find out.

MD/Va is a pretty solid region, though. Expect some good players. I live in the tristate area (specifically Long Island) so there is a pretty thriving Melee scene from NYC, to NJ, to the Island itself. It's a pretty hard region to break into.

It's cool to know that I live in an area that appreciates Smash. It's funny, without Smashboards I would have had no idea. I lived in Ann Arbor my entire life and just found out about the Big House tournaments a couple of months ago.
