Should PSA characters get their own board?

I'm sure that everyone has noticed the wealth of custom character threads that have been created in the workshop. I think that the amount of them might warrant them getting their own board, eventually.

Yes, I am aware that Yingyay has made a thread for the characters, but I don't think that it will be enough. It's a great resource to find plenty of PSA hacks quickly, but with the amount of content in it, the creators of the characters will have to root through a lot of posts for feedback. One only has to take a look at the Roy thread to see how much discussion a fully fleshed out character can create.

Thoughts?

If anymore separate threads are made then yeah, a new board might be needed.

I think this is a good idea, as long as those boards are popular enough (which they should be with the growing popularity of PSA). Threads are popping up rapidly, first Roy, then Mewtwo (or whatever order it was), and now Shadow? The official thread won't be able to contain them eventually.

Although it is an awesome program, I think it was a mistake releasing this... It seems that everyone and their mothers may want to make and share their own custom character, most of which are just for fun (epic falcon lol). I think there should be few teams working to "recreate" popular characters like roy, mewtwo ect. But I don't like all the random crap charaters.

If there was a separate board for custom characters, people might want one for music, char textures, stage texures (kitty korp anyone?). I do like yingyay's criteria for submitting characters (at least 3 changes or so). There should be some rules for posting your character. Someone will have to be reeallly dedicated to organizing all of this... or people will have to detail their characters themselves and not just post: downlod link hair... plz download my char. And that's not even mentioning updates and bugfixes to their characters... It could be chaotic.

There should be, with time, an official list for balanced characters (maybe for brawl+?). But as of now, people should still continue learning the program.

Well, the thing about SA is that the vast majority of created characters will undoubtedly be minor gameplay mods, move swap mods, flashy special effect mods, and broken, controversial, or non-competitive characters, with a very small number of 'serious' projects actually being undertaken. Not that I have any problem with the above (who doesn't like the idea of playing as a flaming Diddy Kong demon, a Ganon that shoots off dark explosions with every move, or the bizarre and ingenious Turtle Bowser?), but even if the character cloning code ever shows up, it's unlikely that most of those projects will find a place among the 'official' hack community roster.
I'm pretty sure that most people know whether their SA projects are being designed as 'fun' projects or whether they're seriously trying to design new fully playable characters. Because of this, I propose keeping the current topic for the minor projects and letting major projects (like Roy and Mewtwo) have their own topics, at least until we start having a buildup of them, which I don't predict will happen anytime soon.
The only criteria I can think of for what deserves to have its own topic is whether or not the person making the character is confident/audacious enough to withstand the shame of possibly being ridiculed and scorned for cluttering up the message boards with their project. I realize that I might not exactly be in my place here, seeing as how I did make a separate topic for my Project Shadow, but he's already got the texture hack, a significant fan base, and a whole set of potential special moves waiting to be re-created, so I figured why not?

Unlike PSA characters, music does not require feedback. It can be neatly bunched up into one thread. In the case of textures, there exists a website (kittycorp) for the average joe to show off his work. Atm, I don't believe that there is such a website for PSA (I know, Brawl Hacks Wiki, but you can't get feedback there).

Edit: Indigo, the ones cluttering up the boards are the ones with the most depth. All of them seek to create a completely new, balanced character (unless I've missed one). I don't think anyone would have a problem with one thread if it was just lulzy effect edits being submitted. Like I said before, the people creating said in-depth characters would probably appreciate having their own thread for feedback, instead of having to root through Yingyay's.

Editedit: ****, ninja'd above AND below. That has to be a first.

The board could be reserved for the creation of viable, well balanced characters. There are a lot of good projects, but there are so many that it's hard for the "good" ones to get noticed.

There could be just one thread committed to making fun, creative, and broken characters.

this is exactly what i was thinking=)

@ dark pikmin
brawl+ will never use a community submitted character(s). they'll use the ones that the plusery makes.
they might... if the character looks good(as in no glitches whith the animations...), is balanced, a good concept(i dont think they would make a poopy pikachu official ever...)... and probably some other factors they'll decide on if they start looking for some... ...

That's what I meant. I was just saying that most people are good enough judges of what constitutes an in-depth character that they wouldn't make a new thread for a half-baked character, and that's why you don't see any. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

That's what I get for skimming posts >_>. You were plenty clear, no need to apologize. Anyways, even if people are good enough judges of quality, there are still enough character threads being made that a separate board might be justified, if not now, very soon.

IMO, though.

Edit: Offtopic, but I just tried Shadow out, Indigo; he's awesome. <3 Shadow.

*ahem* I know you meant Shadow, right? Shadow...

ON TOPIC: If there was a separate section for PSA characters, I can guarantee that everyone who changed one move, and think that they're so cool will post characters, and I, for one, wouldn't want that happening!

I think it is time to add a new board. I wish brawl+ would add some custom characters, but I recognize it's not going to happen. Someone's just going to have to start a project that is balanced enough for tournaments but also allows fan made content. It'll happen eventually. Adding new characters has historically been the mark of a new smash brothers game.

I think a playable version of brawl with new characters deserves a name other than brawl plus anyways. It's just not brawl anymore.

This would be a great idea, like some have already said, some are trying to recreate characters ( like my jin for example) and require alot of feedback for ideas, comments, and such

Ask them yourselves. :V

At best, they'd be unofficial additions, banned from tourneys and what not by WBR rules.
...at least as long as they still replace other characters... but if we get that clone engine thing, they'll have to make some characters official...

^ Sorry about that. Allow me to rephrase my statement.

I think your thread SHOULD be the only place non-balanced characters go, but I also view it as an index for all the characters (which is what you meant it to be for, correct?). So, while it is the only place non-balanced characters should go, balanced characters have a place there, too.

lol yea I was just messin. BUT I do try to tone down the amount of broken or useless characters(as in characters you couldve made yourself by copying and pastin effects on moves)

What if they get enough support?
Just because something gets support doesnt make it something that should be done.

...at least as long as they still replace other characters... but if we get that clone engine thing, they'll have to make some characters official...
Even if we do get the clone engine, the chances of us adding characters officially is slim to null.

>_> If everyone wants to make a topic for their flashy edits, then we need our own board.

If we're just keeping the big projects to their threads, and the flashies to the current one, then I don't see a reason to expand this. The only thing that is really going on in the Smash Workshop is PSA and Brawl+ right now, with a few music/texture hack help threads, and stuff like BB and other things.

It really isn't that busy.

You have seen the clutter right?

No one actively mods this forum. The closest mod is Almas and he's mostly busy with coding and Brawl+. <_>

>_> Well, yea, but I'm a smart cookie and Ctrl+F everything I'm looking for.
That and major topics stay afloat, and the clutter sinks to the bottom.

Isn't that right, Saltix?

Yes. Definitely. Then we'll get less topics here from people that think they're too important to go in the PSA Character Topic. (Not including Doc, Mewtwo, and Roy - Those were around before.)

Wisconsin...yay that place no one has ever heard o
I would hope for someone who is very proficient to make a single sticked thread about character revamps, remakes, and mods, all of which are balanced. But, I doubt that will ever happen. This board is the Brawl hacks board, and SA is a Brawl Hack.

(m life ending awesomeness dream forever would be to have a group of people create a community that could hack character attacks and models, and release an entirely new Brawl game, complete with very different characters and different movesets, Brawl 2.0 FTW! But no one will take the time to do it so it will always be my fantasy :p)

I think that all the legit, serious characters should be put in one thread, in the spirit of Make Your Move...each project head would have a single post in for their character in which they would release the latest version, and they would bump the thread with a link to that post each time they updated. The TC would decide which projects deserve to go in a list in the OP based on the project head's effort and the the balance of his creation.

There are probably at most 8-10 characters that are truly worthy of special recognition, but giving each of them their own thread would only serve to clog up the boards, and I think this would be a good compromise. All the minor "lolz i made rest's hitbox the size of hyrule" projects would go in the other character submission thread. Heck, I would even manage the thread if nobody else wanted to.

... but that still doesn't solve the problem whith feedback... if we use this solution all the feedback for everything would go into one post... and that would be kinda anoying for the creatoers that want to see what people think about their stuff...

That is how I prefer to get my feedback, especially ones with specific change requests[frame count, hitbox size, other specific data], so I can keep them all in one place.
