Shine 2016 Results Roundup

Top Smash players from all over the country came to Boston last August 26 - 28 for the region's first premiere event: Shine 2016. With a number of Super Smash Bros. Melee and for Wii U's titans present, the level of competition was set to be high and it showed. The stakes were high, the crowds intense and in the end, only one king could wear the crown for each game.

Super Smash Bros.

On the Smash 64 side of the tournament, North American legend Dan "SuperBoomFan" Hoyt was in tip top form as he won the tournament in a dominant fashion. Running through the likes of Fireblaster and Eduardo "Tacos" Tovar twice, he lost 0 games over the course of his tournament run.

SuperBoomFan's victory at Shine 2016 marks his 4th national win in 2016. He continues his dominance over the North American scene, as no one from it has beaten him since APEX 2014, weeklies notwithstanding.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Smash Wii U at Shine 2016 marked a return to form for several prominent players. 1st place went to Gonzalo “TSM ZeRo” Barrios, marking his second consecutive weekend win. Though he fought several close matches to get into top 8, he didn’t have much trouble once there, as he beat Austin “EVB | Dath” Brown 3-0 and Eric “PG ESAM” Lew 6-1 overall to take the tournament.

Meanwhile, renowned Pikachu player ESAM finished 2nd place, his best result this year. ESAM was previously a favorite to finish top 8 at any major, but his placements slipped in early 2016. Dath’s Robin had already made waves on the national stage this year, but 3rd place with wins over numerous top players is unprecedented. Wesley Finally, “6WX” Alexander landed in an impressive 4th place, complimenting his win at Midwest Mayhem 4 to form a strong 2016 resume.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Taking Melee singles at Shine was Jason "Mew2King" Zimmerman. Mew2King's overall Shine performance was stellar, having won both Melee and Smash 4 Doubles with his teammates Justin "Plup" McGrath and Jason "AnTi" Bates, respectively. He also placed a noteworthy fifth place in Wii U singles. These placings, when combined, easily make this one of Mew2King's best tournament showings in a while.

While Mew2King certainly deserves praise, let us not forget Zach "SFAT" Cordoni's illustrious bracket run. By eliminating 2 of Mew2King's biggest threats in Juan "Hungrybox" Debiedma and Joseph "Mango" Marquez, SFAT undoubtedly helped to shape Mew2King's victory.

After beating Hungrybox for the first time in his career, SFAT coasted into Winners Finals only to lose to Mew2King. After pulling off a remarkable reverse 3-0 victory on Mango, SFAT secured himself a spot versus Mew2King in Grand Finals. While he didn't win the set, SFAT made Melee history at Shine and by felling two Gods he has made a statement to say the least.
