SD card won't work with Brawl

I have not yet attempted to install Project M, because I am at college and my wii is at home. However, I have a concern. A couple years ago, I was working with stagebuilder and using an SD card to work with custom stages on Brawl. Then, for apparantly no reason, Brawl and 4 other games no longer worked with SD cards. I've tried about three different cards. Not only can I not make stages, none of the games can have their save files copied to an SD card.

I suspect that this will render Project M impossible, and I was wondering if anyone knew what might have caused it.

Did you have any custom stages that you made that was still there? Cause that could cause it. Or at least it might be a possibility.
