I choose
Captain N: The Game Master. Hey, it counts as a Nintendo property. I'd probably have the new version be called
Super Smash Bros. The Animated Series since the old show was practically SSB a decade before SSB. It could be a Netflix original, launching alongside a Netflix app on Switch.
1. What would be the story?
The plot starts simple enough: Master Hand is trying to take over the video game multi-verse with his army of villains reprogrammed to serve him. Most of the major Nintendo heroes (
& so forth) have been taken prisoner & turned into trophies by Hand's forces, as each of them were picked off 1 by 1 by enemies they're not used to fighting (Mario is beaten by Andross' fleet, Link succumbs to status effects from Pokemon, etc.)
Max Keene is a highschooler from the real world (shown via live action footage) who finds himself sucked through a portal into Subspace by Lana (HW), 9-Volt & Nikki who activated an ancient teleportation as a last resort. They task Max with the quest of freeing the heroes of Nintendo & defeating Master Hand. 9-Volt gives him a NES Zapper that functions like a real blaster to help him get started.
Due to all of the good, competent heroes being captured, Max has to settle on recruiting a team of the lesser, unsung heroes to help him. Guys like Waluigi, Krystal, Sami, Chibi Robo, & so forth. They may be the underdogs & rejects, but they're also the last hope the whole Nintendo multiverse has left.
The lore? World-building is very important?
For world building, the multiverse of the show exists on 3 layers:
1. The "Real World" where Max is from, depicted in live action whenever possible (I would love to get some Nintendo guys like Miyamoto, Sakurai, or Reggie to make cameos).
2. Subspace, the space between games & reality. The miis live in this plane of existence as they are the bridge between players & the game worlds.
3. The multitude of universes of each franchise existing independently of each other.
The game worlds exist as a byproduct of the video games created & played in the real world. In essence Max isn't traveling into the physical games themselves but into the "canon" of those games, worlds that take the form of a franchise's canonical lore & setting. The canon world of Hyrule for example has far larger fields and towns with populations in the thousands & doesn't have out-of-bounds clipping or skyboxes because it's a proper fleshed out world.
But the thing about canon is it's very malleable. Players & especially developers in the real world are essentially like gods to the game worlds, able to reshape & rewrite their lore at will. This mainly serves as an in-universe explanation for how the show can technically be in continuity with every IP represented within it despite it being pretty obvious no IRL game sequel will acknowledge it: it's events were retconned by the devs as part of the game worlds' malleability.
The concept of the game worlds having their canon history being altered can be used as a plot point. For example, worlds that already have innate variables like nameable protagonists will auto-reshape themselves to adapt Max Keene's personal experience when he enters them. For example, in Kanto
is named "Kevin" & has a
because that's what Max named him & chose as a starter when Max played Pokemon Fire Red in the real world. Late in the show's run Master Hand eventually releases he can't truly all of the game worlds due to the real world's influence & thus begins an invasion of the real world, upping the stakes for the finale.
Generally, the early episodes/seasons will be exclusively Nintendo franchises but 3rd parties may be added if deals are reached with them. I would love to do a full-on literal console wars arc with XBox & Playstation gamemasters leading their own teams. Maybe that's a bit too much of a pipe dream.
2. What are the characters? Heroes and Villains? Who stays and Who gets cut out?
HEROES
Max Keene: The new incarnation of Captain N. His name is an amalgamation of his previous incarnations (Max Powers & Kevin Keene). Despite his name change, he has a tendency to name nameable characters Kevin (Red not being the last example of this), suggesting that he somehow subconsciously still remembers his past continuity. Perhaps malleable canon goes both ways....
Lana: The Hyrule Warriors Lana, not the one from the old Captain N or Pokemon Sun/Moon. Although she basically fills the role that the old Princess Lana did as the one that brings Captain N into action. Her seer powers are expanded from simply observing the different Zelda timelines to being able to observe all realities.
9-Volt & Nikki: A couple of supporting allies that Lana brought in to aid in her mission. Nikki, being a former mii & a character that interacts directly to players, could help in reaching the real world. 9-Volt offers multiple Nintendo peripherals that are upgraded to serve as Max's equipment including a NES Zapper, a 3DS that doubles as a database on worlds & communications device, & a wiimote that opens portals to each world.
The Unsung: Max's party, a collection of underappreciated game characters that Master Hand didn't consider a big enough threat to bother turning into trophies. Only by working together can they hope to suceed where the more famous heroes failed individually. Waluigi, Chibi Robo, Sami, & Takamaru are among the members. Arguably Krystal too, oddly I think her reputation online has gotten better so I'm not so sure she counts as an unsung hero anymore. Maybe Miyu or Fay instead?
Duke the
: Since Red/Kevin has a Charizard, his rival Blue/Mike has a blastoise, leaving behind the bulbasaur at Oak's lab which Captain N claims early on.
VILLAINS
Master Hand: An inter-dimensional being obsessed with creation & control. He wants absolute order in all realities & finds the malleable continuity of the game worlds to be an infuriation that he can't abide by & will "correct" by bringing them all under his control.
The Fingers: 5 resurrected video game villains that serve as MH's generals. They're all deceased villains MH brought back under the condition they serve him unquestionably. Naturally, at least a few of the villains scheme behind his back regardless. The starting line-up includes Mother Brain, Andross, Ganondorf (from at least 1 LoZ timeline where he stayed dead), Medusa, & Vincent. Over time as the villains are defeated again or kicked out for betrayals, replacements are brought on like Sturm & Dark Matter. 3rd party baddies might even join in time. What's that? Who's Vincent you ask?
Vincent: The rival of Pokemon GSC as named by Max (another obscure Captain N reference) & in this show is the active leader of Team Cosmic, a fusion of Team Rocket & Galactic he formed with the help of his mom Ariana & sister Commander Mars. Except....his not. "Vincent" is actually a ditto masquerading as the GSC rival, one that belonged to
. The current form of the Pokemon world's canon is based on Max's
second playthrough of Fire Red. In his 1st playthrough, he had chosen to play the female protagonist but later on restarted the game as the male, effectively removing the female protag from existence. MH resurrected her ditto & made an offer that he would revive its trainer in exchange for helping him conquer the Pokemon world. Hence why the Ditto took the form of Giovanni's son to rally 2 of the biggest factions together, something the real rival wouldn't actually do.
Bowser: Due to never really dying, Bowser is never a member of Hand's forces & tends to act as a wildcard in the greater conflict.
Fighting Polygon Army: Introduce in the final arc, after the last of the fingers & their minions are defeated, MH reveals his back-up plan of mass produced polygonal clones of some of the best fighters across the multiverse as his new army. Made from solidified subspace matter & utterly lacking independent thought, they represent MH's vision of order at it's purest.
Max's mii: A running gag is Max Keene tends to pick on his own mii a lot, until the mii gets fed up with & becomes a spy for MH. This is how MH gets a hold of the teleporter to the real world for his invasion.
3. What would the tone be like? Would it be silly or serious? Light-hearted or darker? A mix of both?
A mix of both is inevitable considering the variety of IPs involed. I guess my vision is something akin to shows like Justice League Unlimited or Teen Titans which can do both serious & silly episodes. The overall general premise is serious but then get lighter 1-off episodes like a Wario Ware themed one where Waluigi tries to start his own microgame company to compete with Wario's & fails spectacularly.
4. What else would change about the story, lore, & content? Would there be a timeline?
It's not in continuity with Captain N or any SSB game so it's pretty different all around.
7. How would it play? 4 buttons? 6 buttons? D-Pad or C-Stick?
Well it's a streaming series, so I would recommend a remote.
