Ness has waited long enough for his own video thread, almost every other character has a place to show off, and its high time we show our skills to the world. We can use this thread as both a compilation of Ness videos, and to request critiques on how we are doing. I ask that you don't criticize anyone who doesn't ask for it though, some people just like to show off :D

As for organization, I'll be putting videos from any version of P:M (2.1, 2.5 and 2.5b) under tags titled with the name of the players, I will put the few vids I have from 2.1 below as an example. I'll try to check and update this thread as often as new videos are posted, and don't feel afraid to post Ness videos from other players, everyone is welcome.

Added my Twitch stream link, as I play Ness there quite often, and you could look in the previous recordings if you really want to see.

btw, is it just not many Ness players have access to recording stuff or is this the most dead video thread lol.

Well I need help with the falcon and toon link matchup....I feel like I have decent control with my pk thunder...but when under pressure, I can't help but panic forward air. Please pick it apart. One of my problems is that I love being flashy. It has affected my ness play throughout every series. How can you not when pk thunder is the best move in the game?

Fortunately there is a fair amount of CF/Tink discussion in the matchup disc. thread. I'll edit this post with what I think after I get done watching.

EDIT: Game 1 I think you played really solid. Except for a few random PKTs on stage that got you punished I was overall pretty impressed with your movement and option choices overall. I think if that CF actually knew how to edgeguard Ness the match may have been a bit closer.

You switched to Fox T_T

Anyways though I really don't like the random PKTs on stage and how much time you spend off stage doing PKT antics especially vs. someone like Tink. It leads to him getting a lot of free % on you and is just generally a very unsafe option. For example there is a whole series of events around 5:50-6:10 where if you just didn't keep PKT2'ing you would have probably gotten back on stage.

I think vs Tink if you converted more of your PKFire hits into Dthrows (there were plenty of situations where you had him sitting in shield and opted not to grab) you could have made a lot of plays out of Dthrow as (as discussed in the MU thread) Tink is at a very optimal weight to be comboed by Ness.

All in all though it seems the Tink player just started reading your SH and DJC approaches and you ended up jumping or walking into a lot of what he was throwing at you. IMO PKFire is a very important part of this matchup and you seemed to kind of abandon it toward the end of the second game. Honestly toward the end of that second game it just kind of seemed like you collapsed, for lack of a better term.

ANYWAYS my final thoughts are that I am impressed with your play (having never seen your Ness before). I love your movement and uses of Magnet and DJC. I think if you chose safer options and used PKT less than you would have won that second game.

Yeah...one of my problems when playing competitively is that I don't really...think. I kind of just do stuff and hope that it works. My majority of my ness play consists of throwing out pk fires and hoping that they hit so that I may follow up. I really should have gone in for grabs when tink was caught up in pk fires but I kind of lose it when I'm playing in a tourney...I sometimes go for the bat even though a down throw would have been a better option. I like to take advantage when the character is stunned by pk fire but to me that translates to get in as much damage as possible. Eh, I need to work on it. I acknowledge it now but I have a bad habit of not taking my advice. If you've seen awestin's videos, you'll notice that he is not flashy at all, he'll throw falcon off stage and hit the falcon with a nair and he'll successfully gimp him. I think I should strive to play a little more patiently. That was my first and only pm tourney...planning on going to another one soon. need to get more friendlies in and stuff but I'm also afraid that people will learn my ness pretty quickly.

Yeah I know what you mean. I think just throwing things out and hoping that they work is what spelled your demise in those last to stocks of the TL game. I get in that mindset too when I start to get really frustrated.

My Dazzle DVC 100 actually comes in today. Probably won't be doing Smash until later on this week but until then I'll be streaming Mother 3/learning Super Mario Sunshine speedruns. I'll be streaming tonight probably around 10pm PST.

You should look at the melee thread on optimizing dazzle settings. How much did it run you and where did you get it?

I actually haven't had a chance to optimize mine yet, tho the thread itself seems odd. From looking over it, It doesn't really do much to help the quality of a stream. I know it would definitely help when recording a video, but it doesn't have anything for on the spot improvement. I'll still try what is says for future videos, but I'll keep looking for ways to improve my stream quality.

Watched all 3 of the sets, didn't see too much I need to point out other than:

Against Marth, don't be so willing to go either above him or off stage, the main reason you got hit was because of these two reasons. If your opponent was more used to the game, you would have lost more stocks, or even a game.

You should try to mix up your approaches, this is also where I tell you to try learning DJC. Fair and bair lose to shield horribly, but none of your opponents were really abusing smart shield grabs.

Overall, you are solid for now, just be wary of your opponents getting better, most stocks you took were due to fatal errors by the opponents (being hit by PKFlash, not sweetspotting up-b/not mixing up recoveries, repeatedly standing in front of PKF, rolling, stuff like that).

Any thoughts on the matches? Mind blowing realizations we all need to know? lol

Also I updated the OP with everything in here.

Also, get hype for a Ness' tutorial video featuring his grab game on spacies soon. Will post a preview once my friend gets back to me with the video, but lets just say you should be getting 75+% from a grab on any stage.

Lucas, both Links, all the spacies and falcon with poor DI, Snake iirc, himself, Diddy and Ike I think.

I'm only completely sure of Lucas and the Links, they cant DI it to get out, without putting themselves in a worse position (directly above Ness)

Preview sorta thing, crap quality...
You guys know of any free video editing software, the one I used for this is bad...

Otherwise thats just one combo that can be done off of platforms. You may ask when the hell people DI like this, but the main part of that combo is the d-throw->uair->f-smash finisher, which punishes people for trying to survive.

Hey guys sorry for the inactivity, i have been playing a lot of brawl, but i entered a PM tourney this weekend and i placed first! I beat good melee players in our state that showed up.
Nice! It's good to see that a dedicated Ness can win a tourney.

Here's a video of my friend and I having a typical match using our respective mains.
Any comments or criticisms would be appreciated. Also, some funny stuff in match 2.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euzbV1DtRU0 Very sad about this set. I haven't been practicing this game at all. I have made a promise to myself. That promise is that, after the next arizona regional (June 22nd) I will actually start playing PM in the lab and start actually practicing.

Believe or not, I never practice pm. I would only enter tourneys when it was around because the game is fun of course. Even at that tourney that I just linked you guys a video of, I was playing brawl doubles the whole time with some of the brawl people there. I love that game way too much XD.

Critique away on the video! When I start going into the lab with ness, I promise you will see a much better performance from me and more activity on these boards. Enjoy my ness friends.

Okay, i'm going to watch mroe later but two things right off the bat.

1. You need to DJC uair more. in your uthrow chains, you'd end them in full hopped nairs, which is a fine option. But a djc uair on falco can sometimes lead into a full hopped bair.

2. At 2:45, you choose to do a rising dair to spike him. Honestly, In that position i just walk to the edge and I do an instant dair (djc dair) and it works much more consistently for me. Both are good options but I dont have to account for ness's rising speed with an instant dair, which you do have to account for with your methodology.

3. At 5:32, just jump off and nair him. At that distance, falco has exactly one recovery option: side b. His safest way to get it is to sweet spot it. Pk flash is way too hard to time, IMO, and it will potentially not even kill him if he DI's right.

4. I think you need to get off the stage more when you edge guard marth. You shoudl really go out deep and try to nair him with rising nairs, since just trying to mess with his recovery can hurt him. You are being fairly safe, opting to edge guard with pkfires and crosses against him.

5. In general, it's solid play but that ending made me sad :(.

PS, you should post in the Tourney thread, Gmaster.

Alright, I watched the Pit set. Inspiring play. Definitely picked up some cool dtilt/standing jab resets that I didn't know Ness had. Helps his read game a lot (which I think in general is pretty weak). There are two thing in this matchup I would have liked to see more of from you.

1. Psi Magnet. If you know that magnet absorbs him and Pit can't really do that much from a distance that punishes you, just use it. It'll put him on tilt, piss him off, and make him rely on the arrows less.

2. The swinging DJC bair. I noticed you did a lot of instant DJC, and DJC out of magnet, but I think one of the most powerful aspects of DJC comes from the "swinging" aspect you get from jumping away from an opponent and then at your apex jumping towards with a Bair (maybe try with other aerials as well). This sort of swinging motion is hard for opponents to punish and it can land some bairs as kill moves that you wouldn't expect. I think you didn't exploit the full range of the DJC and you should try it out in practice.

Other than that, like I said––inspiring play. My only question for you, do you think nair has applicability in this matchup? Is it worth going for sometimes, and if so, why didn't you?

Yeah I'm not sure why you didnt use magnet more especially when he was all the way across the stage. Pit's dash speed is pretty average so despite the magnet nerfs I think you would've been okay.

Also I was wondering why you opted for fullhop Fair rather than DJC Fair so often? Seemed to leave you exposed/punished a "fair" amount of the time.
All-in-all though that was good stuff.
