yeah there is a way to do that, it involves changing from team battle to normaly brawl. I dont know how to do it, but im sure if you search the forums you can find out how it happened

Here's how you do it.
1. You select sonic (or any other character).
2. You pick a color.
3. You close your own character select window
4. Your opponent picks the same character and color.
5. Switch to team battle.
6. Open your own window again.
7. Switch back to free for all. Then you should both have the same character.
8. Repeat steps 1-4 as many times as you want for up to 4 players being the same color.
