Hey there again everyone, just a reminder that there's no SSF this weekend either - we should be back next week, but Corban is closed for the holiday break until Monday so I'm still waiting to hear back from them

Thanks, and we'll see you on Tuesday for FGC & Smash Casuals at Wild Things!

Please Note, there are a few changes this week!

First up, while we will still be at Corban University we will be in a different building! We'll be over in the Caulkins Building this time!
Parking is available in the R lot this time!

Second, we're testing a new way of running FGC games - starting this week, all FGC games will be free to enter, and there will be a small pot bonus provided from any excess venue fees instead!

Yo, now that we're relatively settled in the new venue over at the Salem Smashfests, anyone interested in some Super Smash Brothers Melee?

(Oh, and Project+ of course!) We're trying to figure out a way to store some CRTs at the venue, but it's still a work-in-progress right now.

That said, if you want some Melee/P+ action at SSF, please let us know!
Knowing how much interest there is will let us decide how much to focus on this now instead of later!

Also, if we can't store CRTs at the venue, there are a few other options we might be able to use:
A) Can anyone commit to bringing CRTs regularly?
B) If we were to get a few of the lagless Wii > HDMI adapters, we can use any spare monitors that we already have - these technically aren't CRT-perfect with regards to lag, but they're very close.
Would you consider these usable, or would anyone be unwilling to play on them?

March 14th Pre-registration: https://forms.gle/pcXhQiAbwasN1Yfn8

This weekend is Rose City Unification up in Portland, but since most of the TOs won't be making it up for that we'll still be running stuff down here!

We'll be in room CA101 again this week, and the schedules for Tekken 7, Granblue, BBTag, and P4A will be switched around so that people can attend both SSF and RCU!

This weekend's FGC schedule is:
12:30pm | Tekken 7
1:30pm | Granblue Fantasy Versus
3:30pm | Blazblue Cross-Tag Battle
4:30pm | Persona 4 Arena: Ultimax

The Smash Bros (& Guilty Gear) schedules are the same as usual

Thanks, and we'll see you there!

Hey there everyone, it's time for a big announcement:

First things first, we WILL still be having an event this Saturday (March 14th). We'll be in classroom CA101 again, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Mar2020 Schedule (Coronavirus Edition).png

The bad news however - of course - is the current Pandemic.
Starting next week (March 21st), we will unfortunately be cancelling all Salem Smashfests tournaments until COVID-19 is no longer a major issue.

I can't in good conscience put anyone (or anyone's families!) in danger, even if the chances may be relatively low. Also, on a personal note, one of my roommates is particularly at-risk if they catch the virus, as is my immuno-compromised mother who I do weekly caretaking for. As such, I cannot afford to get it either.

We hope to be back in time for the Salem Smashfests 6-Year event (which is currently scheduled for April 15th), but we'll have more information on that as we get closer to the event.

In the meantime, please stay safe, and practice up for when we have tournaments for you to come back to!

Finally, a bit of info about what's going to happen when we come back!

You may have noticed we were originally going to run a "Featured Bracket" for Tekken 7 on the 21st - while this is no longer happening on that day, we plan to do Featured Brackets every week going forward!

These will be 'upgrades' to the usual brackets:
- For the FGC games, it means a full $5 bracket at a 2pm timeslot!
- For Ultimate, the Showdowns will be continuing as usual!
Oh, and of course
- For Melee (& Project+), it will mean bigger events, doubles, and all that good stuff! Yep that's right, Melee & Project+ should be all ready to join the tournament schedule by the time we're back! Please expect to largely play on HD monitors (we're in the process of getting enough Wii to HDMI adapters right now), though CRTs are of course welcome if you can bring them!

Featured Brackets will also have stream priority each week, though Ultimate will at minimum get VODs recorded each week as well!

We've got a few more things cooking in the background as well, but we can't talk about them just yet - hopefully they'll be a bit more ready by the time this all blows over

Thanks, and please look forward to our return!

Hey everyone, just wanted to give a few updates!

Let's get the bad news out of the way:
As of today, the quarantine has been extended through April 30th. I think we all saw this coming, however that means that the Salem Smashfests 6-Year Anniversary Event (originally planned for April 25th) has been delayed. We'll probably still do something small in here (and definitely stream something) on that day, but we're not sure exactly what that will look like yet.

Next up, we've added a Covid-Chat channel to our Discord!
Please head there if you want to chat with people about how you're holding up through all this - we're all a big community after all, and this is absolutely a stressful time for a ton of people. Hopefully this can help! https://discord.gg/Qg5kfgq

Finally, we don't have anything official to announce YET on this front, but rest assured that we're working on some stuff to tide everyone over until whenever we can run offline events again!

Also, if you haven't already please go follow (or Subscribe to - you can do that now!) to the SSF Twitch channel, https://twitch.tv/SalemSmashfests !
We'll be streaming netplay & a bunch of other stuff in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on that!

Thanks, and stay safe, wash your hands, and we hope to see you all soon offline too!

Hey everyone, it's been a while!

Since COVID-19 has everyone on lockdown, we're going to be transitioning to focusing on online events and coaching/teaching stuff!
We'll also be streaming regularly on the Salem Smashfests Twitch channel: https://twitch.tv/SalemSmashfests !

Going forward, we'll be running (& streaming!) casuals on weekdays with the following schedule:
- Mondays: Smash Ultimate (Hosted by D.O.M.)
- Tuesdays: Guilty Gear Xrd -Rev2- (PC lobby hosted by SSF|Jaxas)
- Thursdays: Project+ (Hosted by SSF|Jaxas)

On Saturdays though, we're going to be running the Salem Shutdown Netplay League!

We'll be running the first of these this upcoming Saturday (April 11th) - it'll be a "demo run" basically, but to sign up all you have to do go to the Discord ( https://Discord.gg/Qg5kfgq ) and type !enter_netplay_bracket
The Bot will assign you the Salem Shutdown Players role (until the next tournament ends), and we'll ping you when it's time to start!

After that, you just have to show up when it starts! We'll walk you through everything as it's starting

More info on this weekend's Salem Shutdown events
- Only players in Oregon (or south-western Washington) may enter
- If your connection quality is too poor, we reserve the right to DQ you
- We will not be excluding players without Ethernet connections (or at least not yet. We'll see how stuff goes in the future)
- All brackets with be run through Discord, so you'll need to be in there! If this is an issue please message me directly
- The first event will be just for "bragging rights"; we're still trying to work out prize ideas, and as of right now we haven't found something we're happy with yet. Have an idea? Let us know in the comments!

Thanks, and if you have questions please let us know!

Hey everyone!

We've been thinking about doing this for a while, and it's finally here!

We now have a Group Support section and New Channels in our Discord! https://discord.gg/Qg5kfgq

#new_player_help - Trying to pick up a game but don't know where to start? Need help with the basics? Just looking for games with other new players? This is the channel for you!
#covid_chat - Need somewhere to talk about how COVID-19 has affected your life? We can all use someone to talk to in this stressful time, and here's the place
#self_appreciation - Did something sick in bracket? Finally learned that setup you've been working on? However big or small, feel free to share it here!

Also, the one of the big additions that comes with this is the #mentality_chat channel!

Mentality issues (anything from tilting, raging, and becoming disheartened to just not knowing what to focus on next and feeling lost) are pretty common in competitive gaming overall, and I know a lot of us (myself definitely included) struggle with it.
I'm hoping that we can come together as a community and all work together to help each other, so we can all become the best we can be - both in game and out.

If you're ever feeling stuck, angry, or down, please feel free to head over to the #mentality_chat and we'll all do what we can to help!

Thanks, and keep an eye out for more Big Announcements™ coming in the next week or two!

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you all know that there will not be a Salem Shutdown netplay bracket this Saturday! (Basically just a case of "The TOs are too busy to run one this time")
We will be hosting something interesting next weekend though!

Speaking of next weekend (4/25), if you weren't aware it will be the 6-Year Anniversary weekend for the Salem Smashfests!

(Rest in peace our offline tournament/celebration plans... )

Please stay tuned for more announcements in the next few days though!

Hey there everyone!

Today, April 22nd, is the 6-year anniversary of the first Salem Smashfests event!

It's been a crazy 6 years, and (especially once the coronavirus passes...) I can't wait to see where we all go from here!
Whether you've been with us since the very beginning - back when our only tournament game was Super Smash Bros. Brawl - or joined recently, I hope you've had a great time playing, competing, and learning with everyone here!

I can't wait until we can do offline events again, but I also have some good news in the meantime - we'll be partnering with Satellite Gaming for a tournament this weekend! (And after that? You'll have to wait and see!)

This Saturday we'll be running a Salem Shutdown event for Super Smash Bros Ultimate, with prizes & a stream!
Entry is Free
, but you MUST live in Oregon (or Southern Washington) to enter!

Sign up for the Open Bracket here: https://forms.gle/qzfM8KUnZYfH76Jk9 - and make sure you check in on the Discord ( https://discord.gg/Qg5kfgq ) by 1:45pm!
(Bracket is scheduled to start at 2pm, so checking in early helps a lot!)

Before the open bracket on Saturday however, we actually have another tournament going on!

On Friday at 5pm, we're running a Youth Bracket for Ultimate!
To enter the youth bracket, you MUST be under 18!

Sign up for the Youth Bracket here: https://forms.gle/p3vYsVLiYGxxV65D9

Make sure you join the Satellite Gaming discord ( https://discord.gg/YyJUVFh ) as well if you're entering the Youth bracket, which is where we'll be 'hosting' this event! Come through and compete, or just stop by the stream to hang out - just have a great time!

Thanks, and we'll see you there!

Hey everyone, we're going to be running a New-Player League Skullgirls!
(You may remember that we did the Daredevil League for Guilty Gear Xrd last year, and we're back again now with an updated version of that!)

===== League Info
We'll be using the Steam version of Skullgirls (it's on sale for $2 with the DLC right now!)

This will be a Teams League, with teams of 2 or 3 (depending on entrant numbers).

The League itself will consist of a few scheduled Team-VS-Team matches each weekend, which count for ranking points! (The Finals Event at the end will be seeded based on rank)

Also, just to be clear this league will be fully online - luckily, Skullgirls probably has the best netcode out of any fighting game at the moment, so it shouldn't be an issue!
(...That said, please play on a wired connection if you can still lol)

===== What's the point of the Kickstart League though?
The idea here is really to have a group that you can learn & train with, and a goal to work towards as a group!
The prize support will be fairly small, so really the point of this is to give people a straightforward path to learning the game, and a larger, somewhat-structured community to learn with
Please make sure to help teach your teammates, and they'll do the same for you!

===== Important Dates
Signups Close:
June 19th (next Friday)
Teams are Determined: June 20th (next Saturday)
First League Event: June 27th (tentative date)
Group (virtual) Skullgirls EVO watch party: July 11th (main bracket) & August 1st (finals)

If you're interested in learning Skullgirls, this should be a great way to get started!
Sign Up Here: https://forms.gle/7xnYx9B7gLhTw74C6

More specifics about the league will be announced later (some of the info will depend on the number of people we have sign up), so stay tuned!

===== F.A.Q.
How do I know if I'm a new enough player to qualify?

We're roughly going by "if you've played <100 hours of Skullgirls you're probably fine"

Is there a Location limit?
We're going to be limiting it to roughly "Oregon (plus up to Vancouver)" just for logistics reasons. If you're not sure, feel free to ask!

What do I need to enter?
You need:
- A copy of Skullgirls (it's on sale for $2 until the 17th: https://www.fanatical.com/en/pick-and-mix/build-your-own-lockdown-bundle )
- A computer that can run Skullgirls (which is... almost any computer - it's a low-resource-requirement game that initially released in 2012)
- Access to the internet with your computer that can run Skullgirls

That's it! (For example, you can use your keyboard as a controller if you don't have anything else)

What is Skullgirls?
Here's the Skullgirls Switch launch trailer!

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me in the comments here, or head over to the Discord!

Hey everyone, Jaxas here

The Salem Smashfests have obviously been pretty different lately, thanks to COVID and the quarantine forcing us to stop meeting up in person. Because of this, there are a few things I want to talk with you all about

While Oregon and other places in the US are going through reopening, there is still no vaccine, cure, or anything of the sort.
As such, please be aware that we will not be re-opening offline events soon, even if Corban does open back up for Fall Term.

Trust me when I say I can't wait to be running stuff in-person again, but that will not be happening until it's safe to do so.

Thank you for bearing with us, and hopefully we can all have a great time once this is all over.
(Also holy crap am I looking forward to post-SSF dinners with everyone again!)

For the second thing today, I'm hoping to hear back from you all

My passion (and that of the rest of the SSF TO Team) definitely lies in running offline, in-person events.
Running stuff online where we can't interact face to face or even just hang out has been... pretty rough honestly - and that's without the things like Ultimate's rather poor online, lack of prizes (a HUGE shoutout to Satellite Gaming for coming through there though!), stream/technical issues, and stuff like that.

It's also been pretty notable how much less feedback we've been getting from everyone during all this (which, to be clear, is totally understandable lol); as such we want to ask each of you what you would like to see here at SSF - both during the quarantine period and after it's over.

If you could take a minute or two to fill out this feedback survey, it would be much appreciated (feel free to message me directly as well if you'd rather)!
https://forms.gle/fKKjVYRPYTayXono6

Feel free to drop thoughts about anything SSF-related (Discord, graphics, rankings, rulesets, whatever) in the Notes section in that link as well!

Finally, I'll be running a Project+ netplay stream again tonight on the SSF Twitch, so keep an eye out for that - come get some games in or just hang out if you want!

Anyways, thanks a ton for sticking with us during all this everyone, and please stay safe & keep looking forward to the offline events in the future!

Hey everyone, Jaxas here.

First things first, I ask that you please read this whole post... but since I know not everyone will I’ll be bolding important things in case you can only skim through.

If you’ve been following what’s been happening in the Smash Bros, FGC, and general gaming community you probably know what this post is going to be about, and how serious it is.

If not, suffice to say that several very notable community figures - including but not limited to Nairo, Mr. Wizard (Head of EVO), MacD, Keitaro, D1, and unfortunately even one of Oregon’s local TOs, Tezii (who is now banned across all SSF platforms) - have been found to have done some horrible stuff, including sexually abuse, grooming of minors, and other terrible actions.
If you want more info there, basically just go check social media - what we’re here for isn’t drama, it’s safety & change.

Anyways, intros aside - let’s begin.

Harassment and abuse have absolutely no place anywhere, and certainly not in our community.
We have an absolutely ZERO tolerance policy on this front.

The whole point of the Salem Smashfests, and everything I do or want to work on in the Smash & FGC communities, is to be a safe, welcoming community. Since the beginning, we’ve tried to focus on ways to make it a “safe” entry point for newer players (that was the whole point of running Swiss all the way back in Year 1 of SSF, for example, and why we run Redemption Bracket, Kickstart Leagues, etc).
I’ve come to realize that while being welcoming to players of all skill levels is (still) important - and something we’ll be continuing to do - we haven’t taken all the steps needed to make sure the community is as safe as it can be for all players.

So, what have we done, and what are we going to do?
Well first up, please make sure you understand our Harassment & Community Conduct Policy:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1i2A2YkBE880GGtErSChUw_6F15SnizY3_VUEYvZImfY

Next, what to do if you have been victimized, the recipient of harassment, or otherwise made to feel uncomfortable (or even ‘just’ unwelcome)
Option 1: You can reach out to me directly
( Jaxas.Scarlet@gmail.com / Twitter / Jaxas#9074 (Discord) / Facebook - all of my accounts have open DMs) or to any of the TOs in any of our groups (Discord is probably easiest honestly, but we'll all answer anywhere).

If it involves something you are not comfortable speaking to any of the SSF TO group about, there are several other people you can go to as well.
While not directly involved with the Smash or FGC communities, my girlfriend and her friend have offered to be contact points for anyone who needs it as well, and their contact information can be found in the form linked below.

We are working on bringing on more people from more diverse groups as contact points as well, as we know there are a ton of different potential issues that might come up.

Option 2: We have set up a form where you can - anonymously if you so choose - report concerning behavior.
You can find that form here:
https://forms.gle/qv2iKYG48YJG74pF8

Misc stuff to know about reporting issues to us:
- We will not release information about anyone who has reported anything to us without their express consent
- If you wish to report something but, for whatever reason you may have, do NOT want us to take action, we will honor that request.
If it is a choice between knowing what to watch out for and being unable to take action, or not knowing at all, we will always choose the first.

Two other big things before I move on:

1) We care more about the safety of our community, and the ability for all members to enjoy their time with us, than anything else. I would absolutely rather be the TO of a 10-person scene where I know everyone is safe than a 100-person scene where harassment happens, and I think I can speak for the rest of the TO crew as well on this.

2) These issues are not limited to sexual harassment. If someone is harassing you in any way (ex. race, sexuality, gender, your gameplay, game preference, or anything else) please talk to any of us about it.

As a side note, please remember: Trash talk is fine, harassment is not.
If you’re not sure which it is (then probably just don’t say it really, but if you’re going to anyways...) use the following guideline:
- Are you “trash talking” their gameplay? → Probably fine (still though, don’t be a **** lol)
- Are you “trash talking” them as a person? → Do Not Do This

Trash talk that attacks someone’s race, religion, sexuality, or anything else about them as a person is absolutely not ok.

Once we’re back at offline events, we’ll have some changes to our conduct rules as well.
These are not final yet (and we’ve got quite a while before offline events are back anyways, unfortunately) but expect updates along the lines of
No alcohol or drugs at events (which has already basically been the case, but expect marijuana use to be stopped as well at all events, not just where the venues prevent it)
We will be exploring a supervision requirement for our younger attendees, however this is uncertain at this point.

Not everything is negative though, and it's important that we all remember that.
Everything that has come to light over the past few days absolutely sucks, but make sure you remember that it’s not the news breaking that sucks, it’s that the harassment happened in the first place.

Realistically, finding these issues so we can fix them is the best thing that could happen for our community.

I am working alongside Everest & other trusted members of the community to create a Code of Conduct (& Panel) for Oregon, and will be doing my absolute best to make this community safe going forwards.
Please keep an eye out for an announcement on that front in the next few days

The stuff listed here is not everything that we’re doing, but this is what we have ready to go now, and is the first step in doing whatever we can to make not just our events but also our community a safe place for everyone who can respect others.

Whether everyone likes it or not, one way or another the Smash & FGC communities at large are changing.

Remember, everyone is their own person - and they deserve to be treated like a person.
If you are a person who cannot or will not respect others, you are a person who is not welcome in our community.
If you are willing to respect those around you and help build a safe, welcoming community - we’ll welcome you with open arms.

It’s really just that simple.

================
=== TL;DR / Recap ===
(Please read the whole thing though, for real)

Harassment of any form is absolutely not allowed in our community.

If you have been harassed, victimized, or otherwise made feel uncomfortable (or even 'just' unwelcome) PLEASE reach out to me or any of the SSF TOs
If you are uncomfortable with this, you can report concerning behavior anonymously if you so choose here: https://forms.gle/qv2iKYG48YJG74pF

Not everything is negative though, and we all have to remember that.
Everything that has come to light over the past few days absolutely sucks, but make sure you remember that it’s not the news breaking that sucks, it’s that the harassment happened in the first place.
