We shouldn't think about ever using this as something to raise a character chances or not. The only thing it does is it raises the character's chances of getting in, playable or not. Besides, the poll we've complied has no value as to how much a character was requested. My evidence:

Take that!

For the lazy:
He rivals just about any main character. There were many requests from users for his inclusion, and he IS pretty cool, so I did what I could to include him. After all, this game does let you enjoy a dream cast of supporting characters!
Saki was requested a number of times but he's nowhere to see on the so called poll. In other words, a character that becomes playable might not have been on the website and characters repeatedly suggested like Little Mac might not be playable.

Maybe Sakurai figured they wouldn't fit in a PC? I think he is starting to apply the "Don't Fit" formula, otherwise some of those ATs would've been PCs.

Also, look at Sonic and PT. Neither of them where on that journal.

And yes, I do agree that people use that journal like it's "god's word" of smash.

...I don't know if you noticed, but Saki is not mention on the poll...

The characters that were actually mentioned means Sakurai had interest in them and stuff...

...So if anything, popularity doesn't matter, and the poll has more validity...(At least the mentions)

Sonic isn't on there because he WON. PT is the errant data.

The Poll is only of importance if they have multiple votes, as outside of PT and the original E3 reveils, all of them are 2+ votes on the list as playable.

Anyone on the list with one vote has a higher chance of AT/Playable, no they aren't assured, but they are more center screen on the radar. It's not "God's Word" but it should make you go "Hmm".

I wouldn't say irrelevant:

King Dedede(5) - CONFIRMED!
Diddy Kong(4) - CONFIRMED!
Geno(4)
Ike(4) - CONFIRMED!
Ridley(4)
Captain Olimar & Pikmin(3)
Krystal(3)
Takamaru(3)
Windwaker Link(3)
Animal Crossing MC(2)
Claus(2)
Demiru(2)
Isaac(2)
Jeff(2)
Kawasima(2)
King K.Rool(2)
Lip(2)
Lucas(2) - CONFIRMED!
Mega Man(2)
Oguma(2)
Ouendan(2)
Sukapon(2)
But yeah, it definitely doesn't mean a character is asured a spot, but I don't think people thought that was the case. Have you noticed that no characters mention multiple times was announced as an AT yet? I mean, I'm sure at least a couple of these will be, but I honestly think that this is some kind of deciding factor.

. . .Umm, WTF are you talking about?

Sonic wasn't on there not because he "won" some made up contast but because Sakurai and friends didn't reply to post for him. Point is, you have no idle how often someone was asked.

And we have 2 characters who aint on that journal, 1 that only got 2 replies. Thats half the dojo new-comers who got 2 or less replies from Sakurai. . . so how does that help the poll's cred?

Characters with multiple mentions Sakurai actually found interesting, characters with 1 mention, were because they were funny/ etc./ whatever the reason

The poll means they caught Sakurai's attention in some way...

DUH it's not irrelevant, we just don't know what it means

You can't say the poll is irrelevant, because it obviously gives Sakurai a good scope of things regarding how great a character will be accepted. It's obviously not the solo factor in his decisions, but I'm sure he uses it in some way in his decisions. Also, even though Sonic wasn't on the poll, he admitted that he was the most requested character of all.

You only have to look at the Melee poll to know that the poll is far from a major factor with character selection.

But of course everyone who scored highly in that Melee poll made it into Melee or is now in Brawl (Wario, Dedede, Diddy Kong). And they have much more time to work on programming now, not to mention the high expectations Brawl has.

Its hard to determine really. Theres strong pros and cons for using the poll as a scale to the characters chances.

I don't think the poll will get a character in just for them being on it, but I think multiple mentions does help a character, and the ones with 3, 4 and 5 are probably fairly likely. Below that it's questionable, but regardless, multiple mentions is still beneficial.

I don't think you get what the journal was about. It was not a poll and if Sakurai wanted to only know who was most liked than he would have done it like the actual Melee poll.

What this person is trying to say is that even if something wasn't replied to on the journal (Sonic and PT) it doesn't mean they are "less likely" or anything and even if something got replied on it it doesn't mean they are "more likely".

Not being replied to didn't make Sonic, the most wanted character, any less likely. The fact is that we have no idea what amount anything was requested for nor why he replied to the characters he replied about. Whatever meanning this journal has is truely known by us.
