Sakurai Releases His Last Video on Creating Games

Super Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai just released the final video for his YouTube series. Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games, a YouTube channel where Sakurai talks about game development, just wrapped up with a video on the video-making process. Sakurai breaks down aspects like scripting, filming, and editing, along with other aspects such as his daily life and his cat Fukarashi.

Sakurai also mentions a new game project he had been working on alongside his YouTube channel. Sakurai wrote the proposal in 2021 at "lightning speed", and while it was approved, it was going to take a while to assemble the right team. Because of that, the game project didn't enter full production until 2022. Hence, Sakurai began using his brief period of free time to come up with the idea for this very YouTube channel.

If you’d like to see the rest of the video, check it out by clicking the embed below!

Author’s Note: As someone who likes to work on passion projects in his spare time, I’m glad Sakurai made this video series sharing his perspective. What do you think this new game project might be? As always, let us know in the comments below!

I remember the first day I headed into uni for my game design course, frantically looking through the still-nascent channel for any tips and pointers I might have needed at the time. Feels kinda silly looking back... heh.

That aside; it's genuinely amazing to me to see so many concepts, ideas, and tidbits of information presented in such an intuitive and accessible way. It can sometimes feel like the games industry is pretty insular in nature and struggles to make the process of game design particularly clear to people, and I can't help but imagine that a lot of indie devs would hopefully take great lessons from the whole project.

Also; do try making games! Even if it's not specifically video games, the process of making games is undeniably a lot of fun. Even if it's just small tech demos to make yourself feel more comfortable in something like UE5's Blueprints, or something as simple as making a board game on Tabletop Simulator, I can't recommend it enough. If nothing else, it's a clever way to learn about how people think. :)
