I hear some people around here claiming that Sakurai and the developers of Brawl are unaware of the highly competitive worldwide Smash community and the "advanced techniques", but I think that's a bit insulting to them.
When Sakurai first met some of the developers of Brawl, he found that they'd played a "terrible number of matches" in Melee. Over 10,000 they claimed (I think). Somehow, I doubt they devoted that much time to the game without becoming aware of higher level Smash play.
Also, Smash has a considerable competitive following in Japan itself.
I think Sakurai would want to know everything about how people are playing his game.
