interview with tomonobu itagaki by nintendo power:
np: any chance we'll see ryu in super smash bros. brawl?
TI: {laughs} that sounds like it would be really fun. I wonder, is Mr. Sakurai also familiar with ninjas?

me: sounds promissing.

If Ryu Hayabusa IS in the game I would like him to have moves based on his NES games...with the blue suit of course. I have an attachment to those games..His final smash could be the flame wheel or the clone of himself.

A moveset idea:

B: Shuriken (normal weak fuuma)

B Tilt: Super Shuriken (A big orange fuuma which returns to the owner's hand when thrown. It won't stop until it returns to his hand)

B Down: Rising Flames (Throws three flame wheels diagonally upward, burn damage = Mario's fireballs)

B Up: Blade Typhoon (gains an extra somersault jump by spinning like a wheel with sword extended, kinda like Samus's screw attack, except heavy knockback).

A: Katana slash (single swipe drawn directly from saya, has no 2nd 3rd attack)

Tilt A: Heavy slash: Slashes downward with katana.
Down A: Floor slash: Similar to Link's, except faster.
Up A: Overhead slash: Sword drawn from sheath upwards

Dash A: Running iai: Unlike most Dash attacks, this dash attack does not halt, you can attack like a regular attack while dashing. This attack causes almost no knockback (As it would be pretty cheap)

Grab:

A: Hits with swords hilt
Down: Throw down + shuriken throw
FWD: Illusion carries opponent away and slashes him/her.
BCK: Illusion carries opponent diagonally up-backwards and slashes in mid air.
Up: Throws opponent over his head.

Final Smash idea: Flame Wheel: Becomes invulnerable for a while. If he touches opponent, he/she will get burned and trapped in the whirl, Ryu is also able to attack normally while he's in this mode.

Colors: Black (default), Blue, Red, Green, Pink, White

I know, I brought it up, but they never changed it. It's also listed as "Ninja Golden" for some reason.

I support Ryu Hayabusa. I'm definitely getting the game coming to the DS, and I hope he makes it to the Brawl.

It makes much more sense to have him, all his games are awesome, and belongs to the golden age of Nintendo (Nes). With the new game coming out on the DS, his chances have increased...

Come ON! Ninja Gaiden was placed 1st, in the "NES game with the BEST ending" top 10!

I know, Ryu is the one player I'd love to see over anyone else.

Ryu would be an awesome character for Brawl. That would mean another sword user, but I like the idea someone said of having a character difficult to master but once masters truely owns.

Erm, Ryu uses how many different weapons? Plus, what's wrong with sword users, swords are the most versitile weapons ever created, their basic design can be slightly changed to fill just about any combat role. Thus, there's a larger amount of sword users, you can do more different things with it.

Oh yeah, the whole 'once you master truly owns" bit describes melee's fox perfectly.

So, should it be Ryu from the NES games? Or Ryu from his latest games/DOA?

I like the idea of a NES inspired Ryu Hayabusa. The fantasyish techniques would work better than real life martial arts weapon variety IMO. (Maybe add a chain tether recovery... a Ninja NEEDS one)

And Ryu's unique sword-drawing techniques make him different from the usual sword using lot, as in he's not showing it all the time. (It's a martial art style called Iai-do for those who don't know).
