Done and done.
I don't see the PS4 being met with controversey. It seems to me a lot of people are simply gushing about it. However, most gamers nowadays are simply graphics fanatics, so that is not expected.
Still, I am seeing a lot of hype about the PS4. And from the specs releases, its definitely a generation above the Wii U.
I don't plan on getting either the PS4 or next X-Box, however, I definitely don't see how the PS4 botched anything tonight.
It depends where you go. On 4chan for example where most users are PC or Nintendo fans, PS4 is met with a lot of distaste. Other places, people are more skeptical about the news since the console itself wasn't revealed and all the demos were being run on computers. Then you have the places that are more pro-Sony, such as NeoGAF (I don't go there personally, but people on /v/ tend to point out that GAF leans more toward Sony and less toward Nintendo (we actually had an invasion of GAF users prior to the reveal, on 4chan so...)) where people are more excited about it while ignoring some of the negative aspects. Overall, the majority of people are on the fringe about buying and feel like waiting for more to be announced for it before they make up their mind. Others have said they've decided on buying a WiiU.
All in all, there is more controversy as there was for the WiiU, because it's going in a new direction that wasn't quite expected for Sony. It's ironic, but with the Social Media stuff, the Share Button, and being able to beat games for your friends, Sony actually managed to make a console more casual than the Wii.
The fact that the specs, the price, and the console itself weren't revealed certainly hurt it. Not to mention, there are hardly any exclusives announced for it, and the ones that are, don't look very interesting. Of course, this might all change in the future.
All in all, the Sony conference was riddled with senseless buzzwords and tech demos that failed to impress, of course, that's to be expected as the console itself is 4 years behind PCs without being launched (same for the WiiU) which is 5-6 years behind.
All in all, the following aspects are what's important to keep in mind, both pros and cons:
-The console is more focused on social media, however, it can interrupt gameplay, breaking the immersion (good to an extent, but breaking immersion is bad, we'll have to see on that).
-The Share button, and being able to have friends beat games for you remotely (that's an AWFUL idea...)
-ID locked games aren't happening (Great, now lets hope M$ doesn't follow through)
-Built in streaming (actually quite good tbh)
-Console monitors activity (Skynet? not sure how I feel about this) and can purchase games for you... (I hope this isn't true, that was the biggest turn off)
-Videogame steaming (sounds good on paper, but is actually a terrible idea. Unless you live in either Japan or Korea, this is a bad thing as you likely lack the connection for it, or at least will for another 2+ years).
-In game ads still unconfirmed but implied (we'll have to wait and see on that, In hope it doesn't come to pass)
-PSVita connectivity (expected, might breathe life into the Vita, but as it stands it's not worth paying attention to)
-No backwards compatibility (expected as well, especially if they wanna keep prices down, however this will hurt the console as more people will opt for the PS3 with a sizeable library than a new PS4 with no games)
-Always online implied (I hope this isn't the case, this is a bad idea)
-More powerful console (expected, but this is good, it won't mean nicer graphics, as others have said, it'll mean bigger worlds, at least it'll be less of a limiting factor on PC gamers), however, the console is still far behind PC (it won't affect sales, but it's a limiting factor on PC gamers and technology, good news for the WiiU though)).
-No interesting games (very bad news, none of the titles looked like must buys, or console sellers, especially considering Versus XIII, and GTA5 are coming to PS3, I think this means Sony will do what they did last gen and continue to support the PS3 while the PS4 remains unsupported).
-The console itself wasn't revealed, all the demos were run on PC's that "mimic" the capabilities of the console (yeah, this is bad no matter how you spell it, this means Sony isn't finished MAKING the console, that's why the showed a mere tech demos of what is expected to come out. This means less support for devs as they have to struggle to make games for an evolving console, if this is true, expect there to be little support for the PS4 at launch)
-A console that's built to make development easier for developers (great, the cell processor gave devs a lot of problems with the PS3, this mean there will be more multiplats) however, the console still competes with PC (this might work for a while, but I think (or at least hope) people will eventually realize what the better platform is in the future, oh well, it means more PS 'exclusives' will be on PC as well, so I won't complain).
Overall, I'm personally not interested in buying a PS4, especially since all the titles that draw my attention are multiplats. With Watch Dogs I actually have one more reason to get a WiiU, it's ironic. I didn't like how the conference was filled with made up buzzwords, though I admit "Supercharged PC" certainly gave me a laugh, especially with 8Gigs of RAM POWER, and x89 servers. The worst part is people will actually believe the PS4 can compete with PCs. My $400 Acer laptop is already more powerful than it, it seems.
I predict the PS4 will go down the same path as the PS3, simply because as it stands it lacks the support to make it worth getting expect for the most loyal of Sony fans. Will it go the way of the Dreamcast? I doubt it, but it's possible. But we'll have to wait and see what the NextBox will be like. Also, lets not forget the Steambox and Ouya. PC gaming is getting stronger as well, so the scene is more competitive this time around, at least in the west. Right now, over in the East, Nintendo seems to be sucking up the market, the WiiU sold very well this Christmas season over there, and the PS4 reveal was met poorly by a lot of people (at least on 2ch).
Oh, I also love how Nintendo released another Direct last night right after the Sony meet... They sure know how to punish their competitors.
Killzone 4's graphics were better than what we've seen so far with the Wii U, and the the PS4 is definitely a step above the Wii U graphically (as was expected), but I don't see them as miles and miles apart. Sure, there is a noticeable difference, but it's not like developers couldn't make a multiplat for both without sacrificing much if they were inclined to. Look at Watch_Dogs.
Plus, this is really just the beginning for both consoles. Eventually games on the Wii U will look like current games for the PS4 (but PS4 games will in turn still be a step up graphically). Honestly though, I hate how it's become all about graphics. Both consoles will have great games and bad games, completely disregarding how they look.
Well, keep in mind those demos were being run on PC. Also, keep in mind that most of it was prerendered. Remember the Prerendered cutscene shown at the WiiU reveal 2 years ago? That hyper-realistic video of a Japanese lake? Same thing really. It's one thing to have a console run a prerendered CG, it's a whole different thing for it to render that while running a game, I can guarantee you not even the PS4 would be able to handle something like that. If you look at the gameplay part of the Killzone trailer, it didn't look that much better than what is on the PS3 today. Notice how the fog conveniently comes up to hide all the buildings in the distance when the shooting starts? It's hard to tell just how powerful the PS4 will be, 8 gigs of RAM tells us nothing, still I don't expect it to be that much more powerful than the WiiU. Certainly not a "generation above" as people have been predicting.
But yeah, I agree on games being too graphics focused these days. Still, I don't think this gen will focus so much on that. Take a look at the comparisons between PC and Consoles for this gen. The differences are only noticeable when side by side. That will be the same for the cross-console games of this gen, so don't fret.
Anyway, on a side note. I've always loved the colors on your sig. Do you have other art? Coloring is my weakest point I like what you do, any tips?
