Midwest Melee APEX 2012 Qualifier

October 22nd, 2011
Ann Arbor, Michigan

EVENT TRAILER!

TENTATIVE SINGLES POOLS!

Registration Closed
(Payment will happen on tourney day)

The biggest national of the year, APEX 2012, is coming up next January, and we're an important piece of the hype puzzle! Every region in the country is holding an APEX qualifier, or "Road to Apex" event, where the top placing in-region player receives a $100 stipend towards their APEX 2012 entry/travel cost and the top eight placing in-region players also earn seeding priority towards APEX 2012. Only four of these events are taking place around the country, one for East Coast, West Coast, Midwest, and South. I'm proud to announce that the Midwest Melee Road to Apex will take place right here in Ann Arbor, MI!

Why should you attend?

* Melee regional hot spot. 50 entrants at SWEET IV then 64 entrants at Good **** Stratford, and we're expecting even more here!
* Road to Apex $100 stipend. It's explained more in detail later in this post. This tourney's Apex connection = auto hype!
* Downtown Ann Arbor. There's plenty of food to eat and stuff to do here even when you're not Smashing.
* $2 parking. After years of parking frustration, we now have a $2 one-time fee weekend parking structure.
* No football traffic to worry about. This is the off-week for Michigan football, so the streets downtown will be wide open.

To anyone wondering about the magnitude of The Big House, let there be no doubt. This tournament can break more records and further expand the Melee community here in the Midwest. Don't miss it!

And now a word from Alex Strife,

For our competitors, we strive to create the best experience possible. With that in mind we have branched out into our newest addition to APEX, the “Road to Apex” series. Beginning in August, we will begin to hold qualifiers across the United States as well as internationally. These qualifiers will help players become ranked and also help the top placing regional player attend APEX 2012. Here is a breakdown on what each event will be offering to our players.

Each event listed as a “Road to Apex” qualifier events will feature a ranking point system for the singles and doubles events. The point system, listed below, will help us to make sure that the best experience possible is given to each player. On top of that, we will be able to provide a better quality for the event. The points are broken down from 1st place to 7th place below.

1st place – 64 pts
2nd place – 32 pts
3rd place – 16 pts
4th place – 8 pts
5th place – 4 pts
5th place – 4 pts
7th place – 2 pts
7th place – 2 pts

Note: The doubles event will be giving that point total to each individual player. It will not be split.

As an additional feature, we will be providing the top placing regional player of each singles event with a $100 stipend to travel to APEX 2012. What this means is that for a West Coast event, for example, the top placing West Coast player will receive the stipend regardless of where they stand in the bracket. This is to help our players travel to the biggest event in competitive Smash history, APEX 2012.

Note: Only those who have lived in the region for the past 6 months are eligible to receive the stipend.

To all those going to the qualifiers, we here at the APEX staff wish you luck and hope to see you at all the events including APEX 2012 where Smash will make history!

- Alex Strife -

And finally, travelers from out west, please note that Michigan runs on EASTERN STANDARD TIME! In case this isn't common sense, you are "behind" by an hour if you travel here during the morning, so please plan accordingly.

Online Registration is REQUIRED!

The TO staff needs to know turnout well in advance and save time on tourney day. Actual payment of the venue fee and entry fee will still be done here on October 22nd. However, you may not just show up and register at the door... you must register online or else you won’t even be recognized as a tourney entrant. Registration deadline is 12am EST on October 15th, which is one week before the event.

*Registration has closed*

Michigan League (Michigan Room)
911 North University Ave
Ann Arbor, MI 48109

The new venue, the Michigan League, is only a couple minutes walk away from our old venue, Mason Hall. We are using the Michigan Room, which is about 50% bigger than our old venue and is furnished with carpet and covered tables. Note that the venue contract includes a designated setup and cleanup staff, so the tourney schedule will have to be strictly enforced.

* If you have TVs/setups, drop them off at the half-circle driveway in front of the venue
* Park at the Liberty Square structure ($2 one-time weekend fee)
* Walk back to the venue, it shouldn't take more than 7-8 mins

There are food options available in the basement of the venue:

Wendy's (11:00am - 8:30pm)
Taco Bell (12:00pm - 10:00pm)

as well as within a 5-minute walk just west of the venue:

Panera Bread
Noodles & Company
Jimmy John’s
Chipotle
Potbelly

Warning: NO FOOD OR DRINKS are allowed inside the venue at all. Finish eating before going back into the venue.

Venue Fee: $10 per person
Melee Doubles: $10 per person ($20 per team)
Melee Singles: $15 per person

That's $35 total if you're doing everything, so bring enough cash!

A $5 venue fee discount will be given at the END OF THE DAY to the 20 people who brought a full setup that was used for the entire tournament. A full setup consists of: CRT TV, GameCube, Melee disc, fully unlocked memory card.

Spectator Fee is $10 per person on top of venue fee. So if you show up for friendlies only, bring $20 total.
Door Registration Fee is $15 per person on top of venue fee and entry fees. This only applies to players who did not pre-register online.

* The $100 Midwest pot bonus is an APEX-specific stipend, which means it is only rewarded to the top placing Midwest player who ends up attending APEX 2012. The stipend cannot be claimed on the day of this tourney, it can only be claimed at APEX 2012 by the top placing Midwest player who is also in attendance there.

* Only Midwest players can receive the $100 stipend. For example, if Hungrybox invades our tourney and beats Kels in Grand Finals, Kels would still be the first player eligible to receive the stipend, because Hungrybox is a member of the South. If Kels ends up missing APEX 2012, then the next highest placing Midwest player in attendance at APEX 2012 would receive the stipend.

* Midwest standing is defined as residency for the entire past six months before the tourney (April 22 - Oct 22) in one of these states: MI, OH, IN, IL, WI, MN, KY, IA, NE, MO, KS, ND, SD, MT, WY. In the event of a dispute, the TO staff and Alex Strife have full authority on whether a player qualifies for Midwest standing or not.

The Big House will use the anticipated Apex 2012 ruleset with a few slight changes.

Free housing will be very limited here in Ann Arbor, as most local Smashers are living in tight apartment spaces. If housing becomes available, I will update this section with contact info as tourney weekend approaches. However, a nearby hotel is highly recommended if you can split the costs with several other people. Here is a list of cheap hotels.

Road to Apex: The Big House will be featured on the frontpage of twitch.tv on October 22nd from 2-3pm and from 7-8pm!

I have secured FULL and CENTRAL front page promotion on twitch.tv during the first hour of singles pools and during the first hour of singles bracket. This will be the first time twitch has given ANY promotion (not to mention this is FULL promotion) to a Smash game, and my channel is the first Smash channel that they have partnered, so this is a big chance for us.

When there is downtime, we need good players to step up and do friendlies and moneymatches with eachother on stream. This means players in the class of Drephen, Lovage, S2J, KirbyKaze, Tink, Shroomed, Kels, Raynex, Dart, etc.

>> www.twitch.tv << we will be the big box in the middle during that time!
You can follow Peef's channel by clicking here:
http://www.twitch.tv/peefsmash

Also check us out on our website, UMSmash.com! Just launched in early May, it has served as a resource to get local Smashers involved. Now the website provides an organized hub of information and a self-updating list of registered players. Also check out our corresponding pages on Facebook, YouTube, AiB, and Smashboards:

And finally, there will be a tremendous YouTube presence at the tourney. Recording devices are tentatively being brought by:

Juggleguy
Reneblade
Mundungu
Nakamaru
Riddlebox
Lance
Strong Bad
Toast
Rabbi Nevins
WTP
Zinoto
Quaa

A comprehensive list of YouTube channels to subscribe to will be posted in the videos thread to be made after the tourney.

* Failure to report to your match within 10 minutes of its announcement will result in forfeiture of the first match, and then a complete disqualification from the tournament after another 10 minutes has passed.

* Plank's DQ Rule: Any and all disqualifications that are handed out at the tournament due to tardiness will be complete DQs, meaning you will be removed from both winners and losers bracket, or removed from the entire event if you're late for pools matches. There are a number of reasons for this, but that is the rule.

* Payment of venue/entry fee can only be made with bills of cash. Do not try to pay with a bag of quarters or a Benjamin Franklin. Please bring exact change to make things easier.

* Please only call a TO in the event of an emergency. We will already have our hands full at the venue. Do not call asking for directions, it's your responsibility to view/print the maps we provide ahead of time.

Okay, I have to clarify a few things right now, after discussing a few details with Alex Strife.

1. The $100 pot bonus is an APEX-specific stipend, which means it is only rewarded to the top placing Midwest player who ends up attending APEX 2012. The pot bonus cannot be claimed on the day of this tourney, it can only be claimed at APEX 2012 when the player is in attendance there.

BTW in order to be eligible for the Regional Stipends you will have to be living there for 6 months straight prior to the tournament.

That means you cannot CLAIM to be a region if you do not live there.
2. Mew2King does not qualify as a Midwest player because he will not have lived in a Midwest state for the entire six months prior to October 22nd. See Alex Strife's post above.

3. This means Teczero also does not qualify as a Midwest player, because he will have lived in Michigan for only the past two months before this tourney happens. Sorry Haley.

4. VanZ does qualify as a Midwest player, since he has been living in Ohio since March and will meet the 6-month residency requirement by the time this tourney happens.

wouldn't that mean that M2K and Teczero can't qualify as any region and are completely just SOL? Wouldn't it make more sense to be something like 6 of the last 12 months?

Edit: upon closer inspection of the Alex Strife post, It actually specifies no time frame, and just says that they must have lived in that region for 6 straight months at some point in their life before the tournament, which also seems invalid to me.

then someone who lived the first 6 months in the ec and the last 6 months of the 12 months in the mw can qualify for both =0

If this is actually undesireable, then 6.5 months should work. Although someone who's moved twice in a year is unlikely to qualify for any region, if the months must be consecutive (i.e. going to school)

Personally, what makes the most sense to me is probably that they can qualify iff they have lived in a region for 6 (not necessarily) consecutive months during the 12 consecutive months directly prior to the tournament. If someone actually spent an even amount of that time in 2 regions, then they probably are a member of both regions and should qualify. Them being a part of both regions like this makes more sense than them being a part of neither if they recently moved.

In order to qualify you have to still be living in the region + live there 6 consecutive months.

So basically you have to live there to claim you are in that region.

This was done so that people like M2K do not go to every event and take money that could, to be frank, go to people that would benefit from it more ( X in South for example ). It will go to the true highest placing MW player who was living in the MW 6 months before the event. People will say thats not fair for ___ but the bottom line is this is to help players travel and make Apex the best event possible.

Also, this is just for this year we will be expanding this to other countries, placings, and such.
