If only I could be as optimistic. I can see why you are though. It makes tons of sense to put him...but this is Smash, Nintendo, and Sakurai we're talking about.

While it would be a bit of a kick to the balls to have both TH and ARMS get represented and not XC2, I wouldn't put it past them. Though, he should have a leg up over Elma since she had no scheduling conflict yet wasn't included. Plus, Rex has the appeal of three characters in one. Unless maybe the..."anime controversy" bites him. That, or for some reason they decide to double up on 1. Or just shaft the whole series and not put any fighter.

To be honest I stopped playing Xenoblade 2 a while back at the end of chapter 7 at the battle with Malos and Jin.

I decided to start again and finally got around to beat them. And I must say I’ve been loving the game even more.

Mythra is definitely my fave character and I can clearly understand how all three of them needs to be in the same movesets. Rex, Pyra and Mythra could become one of the most original smash fighter.
Here’s hoping
That would have been the perfect spot to play Torna the Golden Country and then come back to the main game.
While I don't think Torna is the godsend that many Xenoblade fans make it out to be (That it's eons better than the main game or something like that).
It seriously makes the story of the main game better on replay by knowing the backstory or context of who certain characters are.

If Rex makes it in, how should the Blade mechanic be used? I can think of many implementations.

- Should it be like :ulticeclimbers:? Where if the blade is close to the driver, Rex's damage is higher and a Special meter fills up for multiple levels, and then both can do a special move (Level IV would be stupidly strong, like :ultwario:'s Waft). But if Pyra/Mythra dies, you are deadweight and the worst sword fighter in the game.

- Inverse :ultpokemontrainer:, where the Blade is in the background giving support and you can trade between Pyra and Mythra (Which would change the stats of Rex like the Monado Arts) or the Aegis and other 2 unique blades to switch your weapon moveset (If they are all different elements maybe they implement blade combos in Smash).

- A mix of Arsene and Torna's system, Rex is the main playable character, and Pyra / Mythra jumps to the battlefield as the stronger character when a special meter fills up (I can already feel the salt in the competitive scene).

I actually found Torna to be kind of...inferior partially because of the bloating of forcing you to do side quests. Especially since it throttles story momentum. Oh, it's starting to get good? Go do some quests. Get a little bit further so things are getting interesting? Do some more quests. Mmm, padding. Though, to be fair, I wish the main game had unique dialogue from the party members for the quest, but, then again, more drivers could make that difficult.

I was actually wondering about how it'd work myself. I was generally thinking that the blades would be invincible like they are in game. At minimum, they would probably be more window dressing and might even be excluded if you go over four players. I was thinking that maybe they could have affinity which could be broken if Rex moved too fast (at least before they reached max and could keep up better) or if he got launched too far too fast. Though, someone pointed out that such a mechanic could snowball potentially so the effects would probably need to be fairly minor either way for it to work well.

I don't really think the Ice Climbers style works though as there's only one sword at a given time, which might make it akin to escort mission the fighter and who wants that? I suppose maybe they could have a defense barrier though to help with that. Speaking of which, probably won't happen, but it'd be cool if he had a unique shield that was a blade barrier.

The question about Rex and Pyra/Mythra is whether or not you would play as Rex, or the blades themselves given the Mii Fighter costume deal.

Given Rex is the playable one in 2 (Mythra had Torna I guess, but Pyra was never controllable). Honestly, why would the costume have any affect?

Finally finished the game last night. Really happy I pushed through after taking a break from the game for almost a year.

I like Rex as a main character. At least he has more personality than Eleven in Dragon quest 11. Nia, Brighid, Morag we’re all great too. heck I even got attached to Poppi at the end haha.
Now I really hope Rex gets in. Nintendo has every reason to push Rex, Pyra and Mythra as second Xenoblade rep in Smash and immortalizing Xenoblade as a franchise. If Fire Emblem can get 5 characters in the last 2 Smash games, I’m sure they can find a place for the protagonist of the sequel of one of their most promising franchise.

About to start Torna the prequel. Is it worth it?

Cool thanks. Glad to know Mythra plays a role as she is the most interesting character imo

Elma supporter here. Even if Elma doesn't get chosen and we get another Xenoblade rep and it's Rex & Pyra, I'll be happy for you guys. I'll just be happy honestly if we happen to get a 2nd Xenoblade rep at this point regardless of who it is.

Eh, I found Torna to be pretty padded, but if you're desperate for more it's definitely the most substantial of the DLC...at the cost of not having several of the characters. But, hey, if you get the pass then you can also get Shulk.

I also do love that they didn't make him a generic avatar. He is his own character, and that's nice in this age of avatar MCs.

Torna forces you to do side quests to advance the plot on two ocassions. And those moments are where most people were eager to know what happened next in the plot. So I understand their frustration.
Even I, who did every possible side quest before the second Community Level progression gate. It still wasn't enough and the game asked to complete more.
But it wasn't a chore or anything like that. Most sidequests featured entertaining plots, revealed character insights and by the end most of them paid off. Kinda like Majora's Mask or XCX in that sense.

Definitely worth it. It adds a lot to the story and it roasts characters like Mythra even more.

I was never bothered by the sidequests in Torna. At first, I was mostly skimming through the dialogue, but once I started to realize the dialogue was unique, I started paying attention to them. Hell, after Malos left the Torna capital, I decided the Torna cooking content was far more important to do than stopping Malos from destroying the titan.

Key part being that in MM, most of the sidequests were optional and didn't throttle story progress. Can really come off as an attempt to make it seem longer than it is. Admittedly, the generic dialogue for quests in the main game got old, but with all the possible combinations, I could see why they did it that way.

To be honest, I got all I really needed to know from the main game. Then again, I suppose it's good that it isn't required or anything. Plus, I prefer Pyra to Mythra too and Torna is obviously centered more on Mythra. Also didn't care all that much about Lora (was that even her name?) so I guess it just wasn't so much for me. I think I was expecting Addam to be the lead though.

People also like to praise the battle system, but...eh, honestly I think I prefer the default one because it doesn't have the generic blade combos, but I suppose it's interesting actually getting to change driver's elements, and actually controlling the blades is a nice touch. It's...somewhat different, but whether or not you think it's improved may vary.

Honestly, I think the next one might actually be Paper Mario, but this isn't a Paper Mario thread. That does beg the question of, if Rex is in, which number do you think he'll be? 1 is obviously already out, but the problem is, there don't seem to be any real dates they'd want to match him up with. At least, none we know about.

So yeah Sky Bennett is busy with a new secret voice acting project, so imo worth to keep an eye on it.

Do note that this could be for another project to, but if Rex & Pyra are going to be either the next or 3rd character, it would fit the timeframe of how Sakurai does his DLC development and same thing did happen with Adam Howden in Smash 4 with Shulk.

Hmm...I'm in the middle about this. On the one hand, if this means Rex & Pyra/Mythra are being promoted from Mii Costume to playable character, we could have a second Min Min-type situation and have the gates be opened to characters like Cuphead, Heihachi or the like. And like you said, Adam Howden during Sm4sh comes to mind. On the other hand, it could bring us nowhere, much like Caitlin Glass with Elma.

Huh. We just got something in common with the Elma fans. Except they STILL don't know what theirs is...

Well like I said its more on the fence situation, but I believe the Adam Howden stuff happend in april, and Shulk was revealed end of august/early september (mind is hazy though)

Shulk's reveal shouldn't have had as much to do with it, as, well, yes, it needed to be done in time for the trailer, but I would imagine they do base game stuff mostly around the same time.

That said, this is interesting, but shouldn't there be NDAs for this kind of thing? Not sure how Adam got away with it. Still, she seems like the type that is in the know enough to realize what most people are going to think this is. Meaning she could be trolling us, playing it up for publicity, or it's genuine and she's throwing a bone.

Also, Pyra has some great expressions.

Though, warning, do be prepared for salt if he does make it. He's not Waluigi, Geno, or some third party so the complainers may not deem him "hype." Poor ARMS. Speaking of which, with the DLC dropping today, who here is getting it? I'm thinking I'll wait. I might get her down the road if they have one that I really want (like Rex).

I don't think Rex becoming a fighter would mean something for the post launch Mii costumes.
It's more about the timeframe than being a mii costume. Rex was basically a downloadable Mii costume at launch. Enough time has passed to reconsider those spirits / mii costumes like it happened to Min Min.
The Mii costumes added post launch come with the implication of being added because they were not chosen to be playable as DLC.
So, I don't think Rex can be grouped with Resident Evil, Sans and the other post launch characters.

Well...maybe. Depends on when planning for pass 2 started. Though, being toward the latter end, probably doesn't bode as well for Cuphead. Though, I'm fine with that. Not a big fan of indies becoming fighters.

Wasn't that quite a while ago? Seems highly unlikely it could be for Smash at this point.

That said, this is interesting, but shouldn't there be NDAs for this kind of thing?
A VA expressing excitement for their current project could never reasonably be a violation of NDA, no matter how few other roles they're known for.

A hint in a video and an image. What does it mean?
I'm reminded when Christina Vee stated that she had a video game project and everyone assumed it was Smash. Since that day she made it a point to make sure everyone knows that when she works on a video game project to specifically mention that its not Smash.

But this is probably exactly what we think it is.

Maybe I'm overthinking but I feel like Skye would say if it wasn't Smash. She streams quite often and has been asked the question of Smash often as well, so she would know that many people want Rex and Pyra to join. Maybe I'm wrong or maybe she's a massive troll, but I feel like she wouldn't want to set expectations too high without a proper reason.

For anybody wondering, Min Min's Fighter Spirit has "(Fighter)" added to the end of it. If Rex is coming, they'll do the same thing.

Which I think it's going to be this. Just removing other characters besides Rex, Gramps, Pyra, and Mythra.

As for Geno, I think they're going to use the Smash render because I can't find anything from the prerendered artwork for SMRPG.

Worth noting that Ultimate is now retroactively changing Spirit Battles in ways beyond just Fighter, since Min Min's now has new music provided you own the Fighters Pass/Challenger Pack. (You still fight Corrin though.)

EDIT: Except I'm dumb and it's actually still Dragon Driftway from Mario Kart. My b.

Figured...but it's nice that she shot it down quick before we could get our hopes up too much.
