Retro Link, anyone? (Anti WW Link)

I realize I'm a little new to be posting this, but, I looked at the character index thread and noticed that this idea isn't really in there, and I have a few ideas for it. So I give you the character on the top of my wishlist for Brawl:

Retro Link.

My reasoning is fairly simple. I personally dislike the "TP-isation" of the Zelda representation. And the idea to include a WW Young Link just seems silly to me. To focus on the two most recent iterations of my favorite video game series (and frankly, TP and WW may be my least favorite Zelda titles to date) just seems... a little bit too commercial.

And before anyone believes that I'm some OoT obsessed fanboy who can't forget about the past and how OoT is "the greatest game evar" I'll point out that rather than OoT being my first Zelda game (like so many) my first video game period was actually Link's Awakening for the original, hard-to-see, black-and-green brick of a Game Boy.

Plus I just think Retro Link is campy, nostalgic, and fun enough to be leagues ahead of WW Link.

Moves and Whatnot

Rather than come up with a complete moveset, including aerials and regular A attacks and whatnot. I'm just going to stick with special moves, final smashes, taunts, and costumes for now.

Edit: For a much better moveset than the extremely rough one I've outlined here. And also, an outline of stats. Go to the second page, where Vagrant Lustold has posted a rather inspired moveset and character playstyle.

Standard B Attack-Sword Beam: Retro Link thrusts his sword out in front of him and fires a sword beam. Pretty simple. Does about as much damage as a standard sword hit, but is ranged, obviously, and is instantaneous, compared to Link's bow.

Down B Attack-Lantern: Retro Link pulls out his Lantern and looses a flame from it. I see two possibilities with this, either Link could spin in place, and surround himself in flame. Or it could be a limited range, slow moving projectile of flame that does a high amount of damage but is hard to hit with.

Up B Recovery Attack-Roc's Feather: Retro Link uses Roc's Feather (or for a more visible alternative, Roc's Cape) to give himself an instant, quick-moving, and fairly high jump. The recovery possibility should be considerably better than Link's sword spin, and if it does any damage, it should be minimal.

Side B Attack-Pegasus Shoes: Retro Link extends his sword in front of him and dashes forward at great speed using the Pegasus Shoes. Requires a small amount of time to charge up (animated as Retro Link running comically in place.)

Final Smash Ideas

Calling The Wind Fish: An animation plays in which Retro Link plays the 8 instruments collected in Link's Awakening (the song being of course, "The Ballad of the Wind Fish"), after which the Wind Fish will fall through the stage in much the same way that Snorlax does, doing damage to any enemies it hits. During the summoning animation, the player has the option of blindly controlling where the Wind Fish lands in much the same way the player can control where a Warp Star lands.

Or (and this one's a little bit more out there)

Walking the Chain Chomp A chain chomp appears, and Retro Link finds himself holding the leash, in a move reminiscent of the sequence in Link's Awakening. Flying in the air behind the wild Chain Chomp, Link is left with minimal control as the creature rages throughout the level doing damage to any unfortunate character in its path.

Taunts

Taunt 1: Retro Link raises his sword in the air above his head, and stands perfectly still as MIDI victory music from the older Zelda games plays.

Taunt 2: Retro Link pulls a Dungeon Map out of his backpack and consults it, then looks around with a puzzled expression.

Appearance

The character design would be in line with the picture posted above (official artwork form the time period). I think it'd be very interesting to see a Link character who wears a large backpack, perhaps in a way parodying the way regular Link carries so many items with no apparant place to store them. The standard green tunic would have to be there, but with the light green trim that is seen (and overall simplistic color scheme) would have to be there. Also, brown hair is a must. Retro Link would also use the Magical Sword, rather than the Master Sword, and his shield would be the small wooden shield from LoZ with the cross on it.

Alternate costumes would be the various types of armor and clothes and whatnot that can be acquired in LoZ and ALttP.

It's probably a fool's hope for Brawl. But maybe if enough of us talk about it for a long enough time it could happen someday, for some future Smash title. But I still hold out some hope that a Retro version of Link could appear in Brawl.

I suppose it's an interesting idea.

However I don't think we need more then one Link in the game... The people who are suggesting WW Link, most of their movesets are way too similar to the regular Link's that are already in the game, and I don't want a character like that taking of the space of another unique character.

I didn't start on OOT either, I actually started with A Link to The Past.

I personally don't much want there to be two links. But I'm against a simple Young Link in any form (WW or not.)

In Melee both versions of Link were modeled after the same game, which I think was a mistake. And people's ideas for Zelda representation in Brawl mostly include people just wanting Wolf Link and WW Link, which I think is overlooking the rich history of the franchise.

Plus a lot of those old items could make for even more interesting moves than I came up with. That one Cane that summons a block, ice/fire rods?

It's a nice idea, but unfortunately I doubt it would happen.

It's already been shown by Sakurai that he's catering towards the most recent games. Like Island Delfino from SMS is a stage of Mario's, and obviously Link is styled after himself in Twilight Princess.

Sakurai will probably give us a few retro characters, but probably not from the Zelda or Mario series if you know what I mean.

Still, I'm definitely for retro Link, over WW Link at least.

I agree on the likelihood of it. And that other retro characters will probably get in before a retro Link. And honestly most of them are probably more deserving than another Link.

But when it comes right down to it... I want better representation of the history of the current franchises as well, rather than just pandering to the kids who played WW and the mass of drooling fans who bought Wiis for TP.

no, the most that could happen along these lines is retro link being a COSTUME for normal link

and thats even highly unlikely

agreed. I think they could make WW link different enough. I thought Link and Ylink were different enough, but I suppose to each their own. I am sure there will be a windwaker in there

I think having a Wind Waker stage would be good enough to rep that game. SSBM had Great Bay which was repping Majora's Mask.

I just think another Link, especially if it was WW Link would be over the top.

Just to make it completely clear once again to everyone who doesn't seem to get it:

This character idea does not necessarily represent who I think deserves to be in the game in particular, though it's currently one of the kinds of characters I would most like to play with.

This version of Link is an idea that I think should OVERRIDE WW Link or Wolf Link ideas. Which I personally don't like. Or just override Young Link, considering that some people think Y Link is good enough to come back.

In no way do I think that there necessarily should be more Links. But if there are more Links, it should be Retro Link, IMO.

Also, logic, reasoning, and adding something new are generally desired in giving posts a status of win. Rather than complete fail.

Just a heads up. No offense meant, of course.

Edit: Andrew, I agree with the WW stage thing. I think the Fortress Island at night would be a fun stage, in particular. Perhaps with searchlights raking the stage, and if they happen to land upon your character, cannons are fired at you? Who knows.

BEST CHARACTER IDEA...E...well, it's a really freaking awesome one.

Big-nose Link for Brawl!

Always dug the classic Link more than anything. This whole, crazy, serious OoT-and-on Link just bugs me a bit. Link started out as a charmy, goofy adolescent in all the art we've seen. We know Sakurai appreciates this thought: in the trophy for Y. Link in Melee, he outright stated that most people consider a younger version of Link to be 'the true Link.'

At the very, very least, an alternate costume for Link in this form would be awesome. Provided alternate costumes get in?

I don't think this is a good idea, let me tell you why, mainly because it would be a clone of twilight princess Link, personally I'm not in for any Link other than the adult one, why would people want WW Link, Retro Link, Fierce-Deity Link, Young Link and "normal" Link in the game, do you realize how many character spaces are being wasted with that?

Adult Link really isn't Link to me. I simply think people only like him because Adult must mean Mature or something. Dunno.

On topic, Retro Link is really cool. I still have some of those trading cards with him on it.

Did you even read my post? I actually made up a moveset to suggest that it could easily NOT be a clone. Do you know anything about Zelda? There are tons of unique items from the old games that can be the basis of amazingly cool movesets. I also don't want WW Link, Fierce-Deity Link, or Young Link (or Wolf Link). I will take Retro Link over all three (four) any day.

Which brings me to my next point. Anybody else got any creative ideas for movesets involving the more obscure and older Zelda items? What about moves based off some of the magic spells of Adventure of Link?

Edit: I'd also like to add that I agree with Prinnyflute on Young Link being the "true Link" when you think about it, Adult Link has only appeared in two Zelda games. OoT and TP. While a very young, silent, brave warrior who collects a lot of weapons throughout his adventures has been the character concept of Link since the original game. So in a way, to vesperview, Retro Link may be seen by many as the "normal" Link. Because he's in line with the basic character idea that is predominant through the series.

Name: Retro Link
Age: Unknown
Developer: Nintendo
First Appearance: Legend of Zelda
Other Notable Appearances: Zelda II: Adventure of Link, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

Height: 3/5
Weight: 4/5
Attack Power: 3/5
Grab Range: 4/5
Running Speed: 2/5
Initial Jumps: 1/5
Falling Speed: 4/5

Regular Attacks:

A: Shield Strike (2-3%)

AA: Shovel (3-4%)

AAA: Sword Strike (Minor-medium knockback. 5-6%)

Dash A: Pegasus Boots (Link charges forwards, his boots kicking up dust, and drives his sword into the target, knocking them back quite well. 8-10%)

F Tilt: Magical Sword (Link swipes his sword in front of him. If it doesn’t hit anyone, it fires a beam of magical energy a moderate range that has no knockback, but does the same amount of damage. 4-7%)

U Tilt: Bisector (Link slashes his sword straight up into the air, knocking anyone hit up and back. 8-9%)

D Tilt: Triforce of Wisdom (A triangle of light appears around Link momentarily, and anyone hit by the light takes a straight 10% damage, but no knockback.)

F Smash: Bomb Arrow (Link draws his bow and fires an arrow with a bomb at the end. Though it’s somewhat laggy at the start, it has great knockback. 18-24%)

U Smash: Power Bracelet (Link performs a large uppercut, his hand clad in a Power Bracelet, which knocks the enemy upwards significantly. 13-17%)

D Smash: Quake Medallion (Link strikes his sword into the ground, and anyone standing on the ground around him within regular reaching distance is knocked to the ground by an earthquake. 15-20%)

Aerial Attacks:

N Air: Jab (Link strikes out quickly with his sword, nothing really special. 3-4%)

F Air: Boomerang (Link tosses his boomerang out in front of him, and it moves a short distance in front of him before returning. 3-5%)

B Air: Rear Jab (Link jabs the opponent from beneath his armpit. 7-8%)

U Air: Cane of Somaria (Link swipes his cane up above him, striking anyone there, and forming a platform that the cane hooks onto. Link is hauled up onto the platform, which quickly disappears afterwards. When jumping from a platform by this attack, Link is unable to perform any aerial attacks or recovery moves. 3-5%)
D Air: Shield Comet (Link slams down towards the ground, striking with his shield beneath him. Directly beneath him is a meteor slam. 8-9%)

Special Attacks:

B: Magic Powder (Link throws a cloud of dust in front of him. Anyone caught in the dust is stunned for two seconds, as well as taking slight damage. 3-5%)

Forward B: Ice Rod (Link fires a shard of icefrom his magical rod. The fire rate is pretty similar to Mario’s own fireballs, but the shards of ice simply shoot through the air, and only have moderate range. However, if they hit a character, that character is slowed by 25% for 2 seconds. 6-9%)

Smash B: Magic Hammer (Link takes a hammer from his pack and swings it, connecting with excellent knockback and high damage. 24-30%)

Up B: Roc’s Feather (Link holds his hand up to the sky, a feather in it, and a flurry of other feathers fall around him as he leaps high into the air. This move does no damage, but has excellent vertical recovery.

Down B (on ground): Red Candle (Link draws a candle from his backpack and a sphere of fire blasts out around him, burning everyone and knocking them back. The sphere has reasonable coverage. 10-15%)

Down B (in air): Flute (Link draws out his flute to play, and a bird swoops down to grab him, and flies him for approximately four seconds, during which time you control the bird’s movement, and after which it lets go of Link.)

Final Smash: Silver Arrow (Link draws out his bow, steadies it and aims, nocking a single silver arrow. When ready, he lets it fly, and the person it strikes is instantly KO’d. Link is invincible while preparing, and for a few moments afterwards, but the arrow isn’t guaranteed to hit.

Grapple Attacks:

Grab: Bug-Catcher Net (Link reaches out in front of him and neatly nets his target, dragging them in to him. The range is average, perhaps twice his own arm reach.)

Grab Attack: Sword Cuff(Link strikes his prisoner with the flat side of his blade. 4%)

F Throw: Wind-Up (Link charges forwards a few steps using the Pegasus Boots animation, while also having the Power Bracelet on his hand. He then throws the character a reasonable distance, though dealing little damage. 6-8%)

B Throw: Discard (Link simply tosses the character over his shoulder. 8-9%)

U Throw: Titan’s Mitt (Link grasps the character with a golden-gloved hand, and hurls the person high into the sky. 7-14%)

D Throw: Roc Stomp (Link drops the character, while performing a flip with some feathers around him, and lands forcefully on his opponent. 12-20%)

Recovery/Defensive:

Shield: Mirror Shield (Link doesn’t have an onmidirectional shield, rather he uses a large mirror shield that defends his front. Any attack that strikes it is tossed backwards, and if it’s a projectile, the attack is directed back at its originator. If it is a melee attack, the attacker takes damage equal to half what their attack would have done. The damage the Mirror Shield can sustain is the same as all other shields before shieldbreaking.)

Edge Recovery: Spin Attack (Link leaps from grabbing the platform into his signature spinning attack, and lands neatly near the edge. 8-12%)

Aerial Recovery: Hookshot (This acts just like the Z-recovery in Melee, with Link grabbing onto the nearest platform.)

This Link is meant to be a bit heavier and slower than the others, due to his weighty backpack, and his basic 1-2 jumps are very small. However, he has a number of moves that can assist his recovery, such as Roc Feather, Flute, Cane of Somaria and Hookshot. He tends not to be an overly fast attacker, striking more with power and range.

Wow, Vagrant, you definitely delved into the deep corners of Zelda history for that moveset, and I like it. Mine was really just a few rough ideas.

I really like the Magic Powder, Bug Net, and Silver Arrow (which I wanted to put into my basic move ideas, but didn't know a place for it, really, I don't know if I quite like it as a Final Smash, though it is appropriate.)

I also really like the fact that he's so slow and heavy. That and the combination of different types of recovery would mean the player really has to get a lot busier when knocked off than other players do.

The only thing I would change about your moveset is that I think the Sword Beam should be somewhere in there. I would want a flashier Final Smash. And I'd switch the Fire Rod with the Ice Rod (To give the character an ice based move, and a fire based move [Red Candle/Lantern]).

Other than that, I like.

He's all fixed, but I can't really think of a good Final Smash for him. Calling the Wind Fish would work though... I suppose I'd just have to find another way to work in the Silver Arrow.

to start this is a pretty sick idea. IMO tho, taking Link and putting in the older items never used is like my WW Link moveset of the newer items. its basically just another Link using different items. but yer idea was pretty cool. i actually think that Retro Link would make an appearance as a costume. (Sakurai did it with mario-his shirt n overalls switched colors).
plus, u basically like Retro Link cuz u dont like the newer versions of LoZ rite?

No, I like the new versions, they're great games. But with each reinvention of the game, and the characters looking to be in TP style this time round, we need to celebrate the history of this long-running and diverse franchise. Hence, Retro Link.

I personally like Calling The Wind Fish because the animation could be really fun, and also because Link's Awakening holds sentimental value to me. I suppose the most obvious place to put the Silver Arrow would be to put it in place of the Bomb Arrow. (The ultimate arrow that kills Ganon would conceivably be powerful enough to cause knockback, right?)

Not exactly. I like Retro Link because the idea of playing with a clumsier, comic, classic version of Link is very appealing to me. Can you imagine how fun it would be to play with a characters who's back is so heavily weighed down with items to use that they can barely run and jump? Plus the large variety of strange items would be mindgames city, and the projectile game would be better than normal Link's IMO.

I also do like the newer versions of LoZ alright. OoT is a really good game. MM is one of my favorite Zelda's. WW I don't like. Cause it's waaaaaay to easy. TP I played quite a bit of and didn't get into, but I don't own it yet.

yea WW was too easy but fun. ive never played TP. (im not getting my Wii til freakin christmas n my friend refuses to beat the game because he likes it so much. he has it on GC for a while.
oh wen u sed barely able to run n jump, fun didnt really go into my head. it sounded like a laggy char that would be evry1s punching-nay, sandbag haha. altho have u seen my moveset for WW? it should be in my sig but sometimes it doesnt show up (i think it may be my CP or i did something else wrong w/e)
EDIT: http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?p=2666613#post2666613 there u go:)

Think of him as a heavy character, but the huge basic attack power that usually goes with heaviness isn't necessarily there. Instead, a variety of tricky moves (Cane of Somaria, Flute, Magic Powder, Ice Rod) are employed and must be mastered to give the character the edge.

Done right, it could be an extremely fun character.

Edit: Also, traditionally in 2D Zelda games. Link can't jump at ALL. And he's not exactly the epitome of speed, amirite? He relies completely upon his own problem-solving and his repertoire of items.

Link from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, you say? Coming right up, Bendu!

Name: Link the Adventurer
Age: Unknown
Developer: Nintendo
First Appearance: Legend of Zelda
Other Notable Appearances: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Height: 3/5
Weight: 3/5
Attack Power: 3/5
Grab Range: 2/5
Running Speed: 2/5
Jump: 4/5
Falling Speed: 3/5

Regular Attacks:

A: Horizontal Sword Strike (4-5%)

AA: Vertical Sword Strike (4-5%)

AAA: Life Spell (Once triggered, every time you tap A Link will heal 2-5% damage, but is obviously unable to act otherwise while healing, and for around ¾ of a second after.)

Dash A: Boots (Link runs forward at his regular speed and then performs a shoulder check. Because these are the magical boots of Zelda II, Link will move straight over gaps between platforms until the dash is stopped. 8-9%)

F Tilt: Candle (Link swipes a candle out in front of him. If it hits anyone, they burn momentarily. 3-5%, 1-2% per second for two more seconds.)

U Tilt: Shield Heft (Link slams his shield upwards, knocking anyone he hits upwards somewhat. 6-8%)

D Tilt: Shield Spell (Link takes a short moment to create a shield around himself, able to absorb damage to a similar level to the regular shield. When broken, it doesn’t stun Link, but he cannot use the technique again for thirty seconds after, regardless of whether the shield is broken or not. The move ends when you let go of the A button.)

F Smash: Hammer (Link whips out his roc-breaking hammer and slams the enemy in the stomach, knocking them back moderately, but doing good damage. 20-30%)

U Smash: Glove (Link puts on the Power Glove and forcefully uppercuts the opponent. 13-17%)

D Smash: Spell (Link casts his Spell, which causes every character within twice his grip range to suddenly turn into Bots [blue blobs of slime] for around three seconds, who can do nothing except move at a walking pace. Bots are very light, but cannot jump. If KO’d while in Bot form, the character does not lose a stock, but instead returns to the field with 200% damage.)

Aerial Attacks:

N Air: Slash (Link slashes out into the air in front of him. 3-4%)

F Air: Diving Stab (Link spins forwards, driving his sword into the unwary opponent. 5-6%)

B Air: Defensive Strike (Link swings the blade over his head and drives it down behind him. Anyone hit by this gets meteor smashed. 4-6%)

U Air: Spin Attack (Link performs his traditional spinning attack, which slows his descent slightly and strikes everyone around him. 3-5% per hit)

D Air: Raft (Link procures a raft and dives down towards the ground on it, small sail abillow. 8-12%)

Special Attacks:

B: Fire Spell (Link swings his sword, launching a weak fireball from it that can traverse the entire stage until it hits something. The attack has a high rate of fire. 2-4%)

Smash B: Thunder Spell (Link flares white and multiple bolts of lightning strike down around him, similar to Pikachu’s Thunderbolt attack. Each bolt does 15-17%)

Up B: Fairy Spell (Link is transformed into a Fairy, becoming small like Kirby, and gaining three more jumps, as well as becoming the lightest character in the game. However, in this state, Link’s attacks are significantly weaker than regularly. This form is cancelled by pressing Down + B while in the Fairy State, after at least five seconds of transformation. The Fairy cannot use items.)

Down B: Reflect Spell (Link creates a bubble around himself which reflects any and all energy projectile attacks, flame, lightning, etc. Similar to Fox’s Reflector Shield.)

Final Smash: Triforce Unity (Link reaches up to the sky with the Triforce of Courage, and the other pieces assemble as well, and golden beams of light shoot out randomly around the stage, each dealing high knockback and 30-40% damage. )

Grapple Attacks:

Grab: Grapple (Link stretches out his hand and grabs his target. Simple, eh?)

Grab Attack: Strike (Link whups the captured foe with the hilt of his sword. 2-4%)

F Throw: Power Throw (The Glove is utilized once more for a rather weak throw all up. Good range, little damage. 4-8%)

B Throw: Book of Magic (Link pushes the foe behind him and smacks him on the head with a spell book, dropping the poor man/woman/thing. 10-12%)

U Throw: Metamorphosis (Kefka’s wings burst into being and he shoots up into the air, before releasing the other character at the apex of the throw, to be shot in a random direction with moderate-good knockback. 4-10%)

D Throw: P-Bag (Link stuffs his opponent into a treasure bag, drops it to the ground and then jumps into the air to drop down on the squirming bag with his sword. 12-18%)

Recovery/Defensive:

Edge Recovery: Stepladder (Link pulls out a stepladder and climbs it to the edge, jumping from the top into a downward sword slice. 5-10%)

There you go, a Link based on Zelda II, with all the magic spells he’s capable of using. He’s lighter than the other retro Link I posted, and has far better jumps, as due to his Jump Spell his primary and secondary jumps are some of the biggest in the game. However, I think he has a rather different feel to my other one, as he’s rather defensive, I feel.

Adult Link has only appeared in two Zelda games. OoT and TP.

Five actually. Adult Link was in Adventure of Link, A Link to the past, Links awakening, as well as those two.
All of these Links are confirmed to be at least 15 years old, OoT and ALttPs Links being the youngest of them.

Eh, I thought Link was... well, borderline. I refuse to call 15-yr old Link adult. Young Link surely can't be much younger than that on most occasions, no younger than twelve right?

Although I could be wrong, since I've only played one LoZ game. Link's Awakening. And it was beyond awesome.

Although I could be wrong, since I've only played one LoZ game. Link's Awakening. And it was beyond awesome.
i dunno. i always thot that Ylink was 10. in Melee the event match was "7 years". im guessing Link is 17, close to adult. how much was the timeskip in OoT?

Well it depends on what you consider "Young" and "Adult" Myself, I make the distinction between a Link who's designed to look older and more mature (OoT and TP adult Links) and one who's design and art style makes the implication that it's a younger character. (I always looked at Link's Awakening, ALttP, and maybe Adventure of Link as a young teen, myself, which is a kid, in my book.)

Actually I don't have to admit that it's a good idea at all, really. I still can't stand the idea of WW Link being a playable character. Even if somebody came up with a moveset.

True fact: 86% of people who hate WW Link were born with sticks up their rear ends.

This does not necessarily include people who simply don't want him in Brawl for (insert hypothetical good reason here).

I'm not even going to bother posting a long-winded smart argument here. I skimmed over the replies here and your main argument seems to be "I don't like Wind Waker". Big deal. I don't like vegetables. So?

Well then it seems like you don't like reading either. Or maybe you just can't read.

As I stated in the first post, I would rather have Retro Link than WW Link because I think it's silly to focus so heavily on the most recent iterations of Zelda. When it's a 20 year old franchise. There's your good reason. Now don't be dumb anymore.

Edit: And to further add. I only ever recall saying that "I don't like Wind Waker" once. For a good reason, as well, because it's ridiculously easy. However, that was not a point that I brought up to talk about why I don't think WW Link should be in SSBB. So you still can't read, I guess.

It's not that I can't read, it's that I didn't bother to.
I'm not dumb, just bitter. I keep hearing "no moar links plz" although TP Link and WW Link are clearly completely different. And yes, Prinny was correct with his point that the young Link is the true Link, and whoever doesn't understand that probably doesn't know jack about the series. I suppose you deserve respect for recognizing that fact.

I guess I came off as rather hostile in my post, although... well, I guess that was somewhat intended. Either way, don't be mad, there's no reason to. If you had simply made a support topic for retro Link, I would have gladly read through the posts made to understand why you would want that, but, being an anti-WW-Link thread, I just couldn't get myself to read through the "NO MORE LINKS" posts. I'm tired of those.
And your argument against WW Link still seems to be that you just don't like him.

Your argument for retro Link is fair, but this is a commercial game, so it's really unlikely to give retro Link a chance. Besides, it's a steadily developing franchise. Developing is good as far as I'm concerned. And the Zelda II stage in Melee tells me they didn't stop caring about the past.

Long story short, I respect supporting unlikely ideas for romantic reasons like respect for the past of a great series. What I don't respect is deliberately raining on the parade of supporters of another character just because you don't like them.
