Bendu
Smash Journeyman
I realize I'm a little new to be posting this, but, I looked at the character index thread and noticed that this idea isn't really in there, and I have a few ideas for it. So I give you the character on the top of my wishlist for Brawl:
Retro Link.
My reasoning is fairly simple. I personally dislike the "TP-isation" of the Zelda representation. And the idea to include a WW Young Link just seems silly to me. To focus on the two most recent iterations of my favorite video game series (and frankly, TP and WW may be my least favorite Zelda titles to date) just seems... a little bit too commercial.
And before anyone believes that I'm some OoT obsessed fanboy who can't forget about the past and how OoT is "the greatest game evar" I'll point out that rather than OoT being my first Zelda game (like so many) my first video game period was actually Link's Awakening for the original, hard-to-see, black-and-green brick of a Game Boy.
Plus I just think Retro Link is campy, nostalgic, and fun enough to be leagues ahead of WW Link.
Moves and Whatnot
Rather than come up with a complete moveset, including aerials and regular A attacks and whatnot. I'm just going to stick with special moves, final smashes, taunts, and costumes for now.
Edit: For a much better moveset than the extremely rough one I've outlined here. And also, an outline of stats. Go to the second page, where Vagrant Lustold has posted a rather inspired moveset and character playstyle.
Standard B Attack-Sword Beam: Retro Link thrusts his sword out in front of him and fires a sword beam. Pretty simple. Does about as much damage as a standard sword hit, but is ranged, obviously, and is instantaneous, compared to Link's bow.
Down B Attack-Lantern: Retro Link pulls out his Lantern and looses a flame from it. I see two possibilities with this, either Link could spin in place, and surround himself in flame. Or it could be a limited range, slow moving projectile of flame that does a high amount of damage but is hard to hit with.
Up B Recovery Attack-Roc's Feather: Retro Link uses Roc's Feather (or for a more visible alternative, Roc's Cape) to give himself an instant, quick-moving, and fairly high jump. The recovery possibility should be considerably better than Link's sword spin, and if it does any damage, it should be minimal.
Side B Attack-Pegasus Shoes: Retro Link extends his sword in front of him and dashes forward at great speed using the Pegasus Shoes. Requires a small amount of time to charge up (animated as Retro Link running comically in place.)
Final Smash Ideas
Calling The Wind Fish: An animation plays in which Retro Link plays the 8 instruments collected in Link's Awakening (the song being of course, "The Ballad of the Wind Fish"), after which the Wind Fish will fall through the stage in much the same way that Snorlax does, doing damage to any enemies it hits. During the summoning animation, the player has the option of blindly controlling where the Wind Fish lands in much the same way the player can control where a Warp Star lands.
Or (and this one's a little bit more out there)
Walking the Chain Chomp A chain chomp appears, and Retro Link finds himself holding the leash, in a move reminiscent of the sequence in Link's Awakening. Flying in the air behind the wild Chain Chomp, Link is left with minimal control as the creature rages throughout the level doing damage to any unfortunate character in its path.
Taunts
Taunt 1: Retro Link raises his sword in the air above his head, and stands perfectly still as MIDI victory music from the older Zelda games plays.
Taunt 2: Retro Link pulls a Dungeon Map out of his backpack and consults it, then looks around with a puzzled expression.
Appearance
The character design would be in line with the picture posted above (official artwork form the time period). I think it'd be very interesting to see a Link character who wears a large backpack, perhaps in a way parodying the way regular Link carries so many items with no apparant place to store them. The standard green tunic would have to be there, but with the light green trim that is seen (and overall simplistic color scheme) would have to be there. Also, brown hair is a must. Retro Link would also use the Magical Sword, rather than the Master Sword, and his shield would be the small wooden shield from LoZ with the cross on it.
Alternate costumes would be the various types of armor and clothes and whatnot that can be acquired in LoZ and ALttP.
It's probably a fool's hope for Brawl. But maybe if enough of us talk about it for a long enough time it could happen someday, for some future Smash title. But I still hold out some hope that a Retro version of Link could appear in Brawl.
