Remaking the Smash Bros. series from the ground-up!

This thread was inspired by the Revised Brawl thread by Pupp135 Pupp135 and the Alternate Melee and Ultimate threads by Perkilator Perkilator . I wanted to create a similar project, but on a grander scale: an alternate version of the entire Smash Bros. series, from 64 all the way up to Ultimate!

Here are the basics of this thread:
  • This project will remake Smash 64, Melee, Brawl, Sm4sh (3DS/Wii U), and Ultimate.
    • The release dates and amount of development time for these games will remain relatively the same, with each individual game allowed at most 1 year of extra development time.
      • Adding additional content beyond what was already present in each game at launch will use up more development time, while removing content will help save up on development time.
  • The primary focus will be on the roster, movesets, stages, items, and game modes.
    • Clone/Echo fighters take up less development time than fighters with original movesets, with semi-clones somewhere in between.
      • Similarly, porting old movesets, stages, and items takes up less development time than adding new ones.
    • Movesets will be designed with the games released or in development at the time of each fighter's Smash debut in mind, but can be updated to reflect their appearances in games after their Smash debut.
  • Classic Mode, Vs. Mode and Training Mode will be added as default modes for all games, with All-Star Mode being added to all games from Melee onward.
  • Battlefield and Final Destination will be added as stages by default to all games (though in Smash 64, Battlefield will be named "Duel Zone").
    • Since these stages were already in Smash 64 (though they couldn't be played in Vs. Mode or Training Mode), they will not require additional development time for that game.
  • Everyone is here! is still a thing in Ultimate, so any fighter added to the roster of the previous Smash Bros. games will be added to Ultimate's roster by default.
    • Additionally, all fighters added to the original Smash Bros. roster will also be added to Melee's roster by default.

Job #1: Submit a fighter roster for Super Smash Bros. (N64)
For this job, submit your preferred roster for the very first Smash Bros. game! Please be sure to explain why you chose your selection of fighters, which fighters are default and which ones are unlockable (in both 64 and Melee), and how much additional development time your roster may require, as well as any moveset adjustments you'd make. For an example, here's mine:
  1. :mariomelee:Mario
  2. :dkmelee:Donkey Kong
  3. :linkmelee:Link
  4. :samusmelee:Samus
  5. :yoshimelee:Yoshi
  6. :kirbymelee:Kirby
  7. :foxmelee:Fox
  8. :pikachumelee:Pikachu
  9. :luigimelee:Luigi (Hidden)
  10. :nessmelee:Ness (Unlockable)
  11. :falconmelee:Captain Falcon (Unlockable)
  12. :zeldamelee:Zelda (Unlockable)
  13. :marthmelee:Marth (Unlockable)
As you can see, I kept mine very similar to the original Smash Bros., only removing Jigglypuff (who I felt aged the worst as a fighter choice out of the original 12). Luigi would be a "hidden" fighter in 64, made available by holding the grab/shield button while selecting Mario, though in later Smash Bros. games he'd simply have his own spot on the roster.

Zelda, being a completely original fighter, would take about a month or two of extra development time. Her moveset would be a more powerful version of her Melee moveset (similar to Kirby's and Ness's movesets in 64), though to compensate for the lack of side specials in Smash 64, Din's Fire would instead be her neutral special while Naryu's Love becomes her Down Special (naturally, this means no Sheik transformation in 64).

Marth would function as a semi-clone of Link in 64, but would be retooled from Melee onward to function like he normally does in the Smash Bros. series (he still keeps his unique special moves and his iconic sword tip sweet-spot in 64, of course).

Every fighter listed here would be on Melee's base roster except for Luigi and Marth, who'd be unlocked under similar circumstances to the real-life Melee (though in Marth's case, he'd have Jigglypuff's unlock condition instead).

I would keep the original roaster the same. It’s perfect the way it is. Unlockables are the same as well.

Job #1: Smash 64 Roster (Italics bold denotes unlockable characters)

Mario
Donkey Kong
Link
Samus
Yoshi
Kirby
Fox
Pikachu
Luigi
Bowser
Marth
Mewtwo
King Dedede
Ness
Captain Falcon
Meowth

Each unlockable character would be a "rival" of sorts to the starting roster.
  1. Mario vs. Luigi (no surprise here)
  2. Donkey Kong vs. Bowser (Mario's earliest foes)
  3. Link vs. Marth (swordsmen of legend)
  4. Samus vs. Mewtwo (galactic bounty hunter vs. genetically modified creature, the latter of which loosely resembles an alien)
  5. Yoshi vs. King Dedede (big eaters)
  6. Kirby vs. Ness (the former of which is a space traveler)
  7. Fox vs. Captain Falcon (pilots with animal motifs)
  8. Pikachu vs. Meowth (again, no surprise here)
Bowser, Dedede, Mewtwo and Marth were originally supposed to appear in 64, but were cut due to time constraints, so I'd give 64 another year to add these four back in. I also replaced Jigglypuff with Meowth due to the latter being much more prominent in the anime than the former.
  • Luigi: Clear 1P Game as Mario w/o continues
  • Bowser: Clear 1P Game as Donkey Kong w/o continues
  • Marth: Clear 1P Game as Link w/o continues
  • Mewtwo: Clear 1P Game as Samus w/o continues
  • King Dedede: Clear 1P Game as Yoshi w/o continues
  • Ness: Clear 1P Game as Kirby w/o continues
  • Captain Falcon Clear 1P Game as Fox w/o continues
  • Meowth: Clear 1P Game as Pikachu w/o continues

I guess I’ll go with 3-6 extra months of development time and propose this roster.

Starters
:ultmario::ultdk::ultlink::ultsamus::ultyoshi::ultkirby::ultfox::ultness::ultpikachu:

Secret Fighters
:ultluigi::ultbowser::ultmarth::ultfalcon::ultjigglypuff:

If I’m allowed to have extra starters, I think that Ness would be appropriate as a starter as Mother was popular in Japan at the time, and Earthbound 64 was under development.
I have no objections towards the other starters as they had the history and/or relevancy to back them up.
For secret fighters, I kept the other three as they‘re relatively easy to add, and I don’t really see a better alternative to Jigglypuff given the nature of its addition.
Bowser was incredibly close to making the final cut, so that extra month or two would help finish his development.
Given that Dedede and Mewtwo were initially worked on, I think the extra time and their development time should be usable for making Marth, who’s added as Fire Emblem was a decently relevant series at the time.
Luigi: Clear 1P-Game
Bowser: Clear 1P-Game on Normal+ difficulty w/o continues using 3 stocks
Marth: Clear Break the Targets with the starting cast
Captain Falcon: Clear 1-P Game within 20 minutes
Jigglypuff: Clear Board the Platforms with the Starting cast
Luigi and Bowser get promoted to starter characters in Melee. If I’m doing initial unlock conditions for Melee, Jigglypuff and Marth retain theirs, and Caltain Falcon is unlocked by completing Classic Mode in 15 minutes or Adventure Mode in 30 (he’s also between Falco and Marth for Vs. Mode unlocks).

I’m pretty much just going to do the original 12, and if I add any dev time then probably the other members of Team Star Fox as Skins for Fox, as well as Bowser, Dedede, Marth, and Mewtwo.

Since we're going game-by-game, and a maximum of 1 extra year of development for each game. In terms of the roster, I used various leaks, rumours, mods and unused content for Smash 64 to create my roster, and I decided to allocate six months of extra development time.

SSB64 Rewrite Roster (Normal).png

  • The Original 8 stay the same. Considering the time period of late 1999 to early 2000, these series were still relevant by then.
  • The original Secret 4 also stays the same. If there was more time, then Jigglypuff would be replaced with Mewtwo, but since I just only put in six months, that won't happen.
  • That leaves about four characters left:
    • Bowser almost made it into the actual game, but time constraints pulled him out. Now that we have extra time, I'd say we can put him in here.
    • Marth was considered to be in the game, and apparently, he was supposed to be a more technical version of Link. So I'm gonna put him in, but as an unlockable.
    • I needed to include at least one new clone character, since we already have Luigi for Mario and Jigglypuff for Kirby (in a way). Seeing that we have five Mario characters (inc. Yoshi and DK) and two Pokémon reps, this leaves an extra character for Zelda, Metroid or Star Fox (F-Zero and Earthbound don't warrant another character, and Kirbymight give off some Sakurai bias).
      • Eventually, I chose Ganondorf as a Captain Falcon clone. As we know, he started as a Falcon clone, so if he debuts in the first game, then he'll have more time to be decloned.
    • This last character is the most oddball choice, but it's Marina from Mischief Makers. Of course, we know her for being in Smash Remix, but at the time of this release, she would probably be the most obscure character despite being recently released. We also need another female rep (Jigglypuff is feminine, but either gender), so I felt like she would be a good addition.
  • Honorable Mentions: Peach, Wario, Zelda, King Dedede, Falco and Mewtwo. (Most likely all are gonna be in the next one).
  • Jigglypuff - Same as before: Complete Classic Mode with any character.
  • Captain Falcon - Same as before: Complete Classic Mode within 20 minutes. (Starter in Melee)
  • Luigi - Same as before: Complete Break the Targets with all starter characters.
  • Ness - Same as before: Complete Classic Mode on Normal with 3 lives or less and no continues. (Starter in Melee)
  • Bowser - Play 50 Versus Matches. (Starter in Melee)
  • Marth - Complete Board the Platforms with all starter characters.
  • Ganondorf - Complete Classic Mode on Hard within 25 minutes.
  • Marina - Idk rn, I'll edit this at some point later.

Note: I feel like extra development is really gonna become handy in Melee and Brawl.

My nominations:
  1. Perkilator - The only one to include rivalries, only critique is that all characters can be unlocked through 1P Game.
  2. Mine - Rules say we can put our own either on 2nd or 3rd, so I kinda had to. (maybe future rounds, try and limit that even further).
  3. Pupp135 - Added a reasoning to some of their choices, which is why I like some context to choices.

Okay, time to tally up the voting results:
Perkilator Perkilator 's roster will be the roster used for Super Smash Bros. (N64), meaning we'll be using up the whole year of extra development time for Smash 64.

Job #2: Submit a selection of 12 stages for Super Smash Bros. (N64)
I feel that 12 stages is a decent number for the first Smash Bros. game (and technically, it was the number of combat-oriented stages in the first Smash Bros. game, even if 3 of those were restricted to Classic Mode), . Here are the rules:
  • All 8 of the default fighters must have a default stage representing their series.
  • At least 2 of the stages must be unlockable.
  • You may choose whether or not to have Duel Zone and Final Destination as part of the stage selection, as well as whether they are default or unlockable.
  • If you submit a stage that was not one in the original Smash Bros., be sure to explain that stage's layout and gimmicks/hazards.
  • Each stage will have its own dedicated music track.

Job #2: 64 Stages
  1. Bob-Omb Battlefield (this would be a stage with two platforms on each side and a cannon in the middle that appears occasionally; the music is an SSB64-style remix of Bob-Omb Battlefield)
  2. Kongo Jungle
  3. Hyrule Castle
  4. Planet Zebes
  5. Super Happy Tree
  6. Dream Land
  7. Sector Z
  8. Pokémon Center (this would be a stage with a similar layout to Battlefield, though Pokémon would occasionally appear as hazards; the music is the same as Saffron City)
  9. Magicant (this would be the same as the 3DS stage; the music would be an SSB64-style remix of Magicant, and you’d unlock this stage by unlocking Ness)
  10. Mute City (this would also be the same as the 3DS stage, complete with the original theme on the SNES; unlocked by unlocking Captain Falcon)
  11. Akaneia (this would be based on Chapter 1 from Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, acting more as a Battlefield layout; the music would be an SSB64-style remix of Shadow Dragon’s map theme, and you’d unlock it by unlocking Marth)
  12. Meta Crystal (unlocked by clearing 1P Game as all characters)

I say keep the original 8 stages.
Unlockable Stages Bowser’s Castle, Pokémon Stadium, Saturn Valley and Meta Crystal.
Bowser’s Castle stage is similar to the how is t portrayed in the first Mario Game, collapsible bridge and all.
Pokémon stadium is the same as Melee’s, but with :022::042::049::142: flying in the background
Saturn Valley is the springs with Mr.Saturns in the background.

Ok so judging by the guidelines set by the host, and the fact we're using a year of development time; here is what I have planned. Note that some images are from Smash Remix.
Stages 64 Rewrite Roster (Coloured).png

Blue means starter stage, while red means unlockable stage.
  • Starting Stages:
    1. Mushroom Kingdom from Super Mario - This replaces Peach's Castle as the starter stage, meaning that this is the sole stage from the franchise. The music remains the same.
    2. Jungle Japes from Donkey Kong - Replacing Congo Jungle as a whole, and it's the same layout as the Melee stage, but without the water gimmicks. The music remains the same.
    3. Hyrule Castle from The Legend of Zelda - The stage layout, hazards, and music remains the same.
    4. Planet Zebes from Metroid - The stage layout, hazards, and music remains the same.
    5. Yoshi's Story from Yoshi - Replacing Yoshi's Island (now Super Happy Tree), it uses the same layout as the Melee stage, and now acts as the "starter" stage for competitive play. (Duel Zone needs to be unlocked). However, the music remains the same.
    6. Mt. Dedede from Kirby - Replacing Dream Land as a whole, it's a simple flat platform that's similar to Boxing Ring from Smash 4, but without the bouncing ring or the falling lights. The music is now King Dedede's theme. (Smash Remix is used as a reference point)
    7. Sector Z from Star Fox - Remains the same as the original game, including the music.
    8. Saffron City from Pokémon - I originally was going to choose Pokémon Stadium from future games, but I decided to stay with Saffron City, because the N64 probably wouldn't be able to handle transforming stages. The music remains the same.
  • Unlockable Stages:
    • Mute City - The layout is similar to the Battlefield form of the 3DS stage, alternatively adding the Blue Falcon as a platform. This stage is unlocked when the player completes 1P Game with Captain Falcon. The music of the stage is the regular Mute City theme.
    • Onett - The layout is similar to the one in Melee, except the hazards are reduced significantly, maybe only having the moving car. This stage is unlocked when the player completes 1P Game with Ness. The music of the stage is Pollyanna.
    • Duel Zone - Also known as Battlefield, the stage remains the same as well as the music. This stage is unlocked by completing 1P Game with all starter characters.
    • Final Destination - Same as before, with the stage and music remaining the same. This stage is unlocked by completing 1P Game with every character within 20 minutes and play every multiplayer stage at least once. (yeah this is the hardest thing to get)
    • Honorable Mention: A Fire Emblem stage - The job description and the chosen roster is too restrictive to include an FE stage. If there were two unlockable stages, they would have to be from F-Zero and EarthBound.

Side note: Counting Duel Zone and Final Destination as part of the 12 definitely makes this even more restrictive.

Also as a bonus, here's Perkilator's roster in the roster maker. Blue means starter characters, while red means unlockables.

I think for fun, I’ll whip up some special moves for the cast. I’m going to do 3 special moves per character because that’s how it was in 64.
  • Mario
    • Neutral: Fire Ball
    • Up: Super Jump Punch
    • Down: Raccoon Tail (works like Mario Tornado)
  • Donkey Kong
    • Neutral: Barrel Toss (DK tosses an empty barrel forward)
    • Up: Barrel Cannon (DK shoots upward, hitting anyone in the way)
    • Down: Spinning Kong
  • Link
    • Neutral: Bow & Arrow
    • Up: Spin Attack
    • Down: Bomb
  • Samus
    • Neutral: Missile
    • Up: Speed Booster (Samus travels straight upward but doesn’t deal damage)
    • Down: Morph Ball / Bomb (Samus curls into her Morph Ball form and can leave bombs by pressing A. Pressing B or getting hit causes Samus to exit this form)
  • Yoshi
    • Neutral: Egg Toss (Yoshi aims at the nearest opponent, then throws an egg that deals relatively minor damage)
    • Up: Hip Drop (Yoshi jumps up and then slams down with a shockwave. In the air, it has more horizonal distance than vertical distance.)
    • Down: Egg Roll
  • Kirby
    • Neutral: Inhale
    • Up: High Jump (Kirby jumps high into the air and hits any opponent in the way; of course, once that happens, it counts as a footstool and Kirby is sent into freefall)
    • Down: Stone
  • Fox
    • Neutral: Blaster
    • Up: Fire Fox
    • Down: Reflector
  • Pikachu
    • Neutral: Thunder Shock (basically Thunder Jolt but using the name of one of Pikachu’s canonical attacks)
    • Up: Quick Attack
    • Down: Thunder
  • Luigi
    • Neutral: Fire Ball
    • Up: Super Jump Punch
    • Down: Racoon Tail
  • Bowser
    • Neutral: Fire Shot (Bowser shoots fireballs that get smaller and weaker with successive use)
    • Up: Koopa Clown Car (Bowser floats upward in his Clown Car; he can be interrupted by an attack and pressing any other button ends it early)
    • Down: Whirling Fortress
  • Marth
    • Neutral: Shield Breaker
    • Up: Dolphin Slash
    • Down: Counter
  • Mewtwo
    • Neutral: Swift (functionality closer to Shadow Ball but fires as a volley of stars instead)
    • Up: Teleport
    • Down: Disable
  • King Dedede
    • Neutral: Gordo Toss
    • Up: Dedede Jump
    • Down: Hammer Flip
  • Ness
    • Neutral: PK Freeze
    • Up: PK Thunder
    • Down: PSI Magnet
  • Captain Falcon
    • Neutral: Falcon Punch
    • Up: Falcon Dive
    • Down: Falcon Kick
  • Meowth
    • Neutral: Pay Day (Meowth tosses a coin forward. The damage and knockback it deals depends on how far behind Meowth is compared to the opponents.)
    • Up: Blast Off (Meowth gets launched by a comical explosion; he doesn’t take recoil damage, but how high he’s launched depends on how much damage he has)
    • Down: Scratch (Meowth backflips forward and grabs an opponent; if successful, he scratches the opponent multiple times, which he can finish by pressing B. Pressing B before Meowth grabs anyone has him instead slash in a frontflip.)

Side note: Counting Duel Zone and Final Destination as part of the 12 definitely makes this even more restrictive.
You bring up a good point regarding Duel Zone and Final Destination, Shadic. Actually, I originally had the stages that were already in Smash 64 (including the three that were restricted to 1P Game) in mind when coming up with Job #2, since we were already using up the extra development time to expand the roster to 16 (which will most likely include additional Break the Targets and Board the Platforms stages for those new characters, as well as new members of the Fighting Polygon Team). But now that I think about it, even with the roster additions, we might still have enough time and space left to squeeze in another stage or two.

With that in mind, I've decided to remove the requirement to include Duel Zone and Final Destination as part of the 12-stage roster submission for Job #2. They'll still be in the game (they do serve as the final stages of 1P Game, after all), and it's still possible to include them as part of the roster and/or submit unlock conditions for them, but it's no longer required to do so.

Here is the selection (I used cyan to denote the unlockable stages).
Mushroom Kingdom
Kongo Jungle
Hyrule Castle
Planet Zebes (renamed to Brinstar)
Archanea
Super Happy Tree (keeps that name)
Big Blue
Dream Land (renamed to Green Greens)
Sector Z (renamed to Great Fox)
Onett
Saffron City
Metal Cavern/Meta Crystal
This stage selection will allow me to have each franchise with its own stage.
Archanea would have the same layout as the second Castle Siege layout, and the song would be the main theme for Mystery of the Emblem.
I feel like Big Blue is less complex to make compared to the Mute City maps. The Big Blue song used in the F-Zero games is used for this stage.
Onett is almost identical to its Melee reincarnation, but Polyanna is the theme song instead.
I like Peach’s Castle but Mushroom Kingdom is more prominent, and I wanted each franchise to have its own stage.
I considered replacing Saffron City with Pokemon Stadium, but I like the layout that Saffron City has, and it gives Pokemon a less generic atmosphere for its first stage.
I have a feeling that Metal Cavern will be a part of 1-P Game, so why not make it available in Vs Mode.
Archanea: Complete 1-P game with all fighters
Big Blue: Beat 1P-Game with Captain Falcon within 20 minutes
Onett: Unlock all fighters
Metal Cavern: Beat 1-P Game on Very Hard difficulty

I like it! I also decided to make my own character select screen to better convey who's a rival to who.

Okay, I think we're ready to start the voting process for Job #2. Here are the nominations:
Vote for your top 2, with yours below 1st:
  1. Pupp135 Pupp135
  2. ShadicMCGS ShadicMCGS
Job #3: Submit a selection of items for Super Smash Bros. (N64)
Here are the rules:
  • The minimum number of items is 15, while the maximum number of items is 25.
  • Provide the Nintendo series that each of your submitted items represents.
    • This includes Super Smash Bros. itself, if a submitted item is original to the series.
  • If the Pokéball item is included in your item selection, please provide a list of 10 to 20 Pokémon that can be summoned using it.
    • This also applies to characters summoned via the Assist Capsule item that was considered for Melee (and its eventual replacement from Brawl onward, the Assist Trophy), should it be included.
    • Only one "summon" item can be included in your selection.
  • If you include items that haven't been in the Smash Bros. series before, explain how they would function.

Personally, there isn't really anything I'd change about the items already in the first Smash Bros. game (including the Pokéball assists), as I think they're an appropriate selection for the first game in the series. The only change I'd make is one out of necessity: since Meowth is a playable fighter this time around, his position as a Pokéball assist would instead go to Jigglypuff, who'd use her Sing attack to put opponents to sleep, leaving them open to attacks.

Considering that one of two are likely to win the stages job, I slightly based my item picks on said submissions.
Items 64 Rewrite Roster (Coloured).png

  • The items remain mostly the same, with two additional items.
  • Mr. Saturn - Unlocked alongside Ness, and works exactly how you think it works.
  • Peanut Gun - Unlocked by completing 1P Game with four starter characters, and the peanuts (bullets) have different properties compared to the Ray Gun. This also serves as tiny "promotion" for Donkey Kong 64. I realised a bit too late that DK64 was after Smash 64, but considering both games would be development around the same time, I felt like they could sneak in.
As for the Poké Ball Pokémon, the pool is largely the same, with some more additions.
Poké Ball Pokémon 64 Rewrite Roster.png

Most of the roster remains the same, except a few changes:
  • Bulbasaur - Does the move Razor Leaf when summoned, similar to Venusaur on Saffron City. (This can also replace Venusaur in the actual stage)
  • Jigglypuff - Replaces Meowth, since they've swapped as characters and Pokémon. She uses the move Sing that puts the players to sleep within her reach.
  • Electrode - Does the move Explosion after a certain amount of time, similar to its function on Saffron City.
  • Eevee - Does the move Take Down nearby opponents, like its Smash 4 function. (This can also replace Porygon on Saffron City)

The voting results for Smash 64's stages are in!
Pupp135 Pupp135 's stage choices will be the ones used for Super Smash Bros. (N64).

And here are the voting options for Smash 64's items:
Job #4: Submit a 1P Game (Classic Mode) format for Super Smash Bros. (N64)
1688688528303.png

Honestly, this is another thing from the original Super Smash Bros. that I personally wouldn't change, since it serves as a good basis for future single-player modes in the Super Smash Bros. series. This, of course, means that Break the Targets and Board the Platforms would also be returning as modes. Still, I'd like to hear your suggestions as to how you'd handle 1P Game!

You probably should've waited a bit more in terms of items, just saying; feel like we're moving a bit too fast.
Yet again, I'm not the host, I was just suggesting!

For modes: I think nothing really needs to change in terms of the amount of modes and what they are. I think the three modes we have are fine, since there weren't any unused modes for Smash 64 (the only change would obviously add more Target/Platform stages for the 5 new characters). I also can't think of any adjustments to 1P game as well.
