It's more about the Mushroom World than Mario himself.

I would argue that Mario(and Luigi) could replace with someone else and his vision of the mushroom rould would still be intact.

Also, Mario went from an ordinary New Yorker with limits, to a annoyingly sounded, superpowered, idiot-balled, manchild, and Malstrom despises that(as well as his followers).
