Scorpion is one of the most iconic fighting game characters alongside Ryu and as much as I like him to be in Smash Bros,, there's just ONE thing that might keep him away: Violence. Yeah, sure, they can tone it down a bit like in MK vs. DC Universe, but most MK fans would be disappointed if that's the case. It's one of the reason why they hate MK vs. DC Universe so much. Besides, he has to compete with other fighting game characters, such as Heihachi for the spot.

Want: 25%
I'm a fan of Mortal Kombat and to be honest I would rather have Sub-Zero than Scorpion. Still, if he does get in, I hope he brings along Sub-Zero as an Echo.

I'll start with the positive: if you were going to put a Mortal Kombat character in, Scorpion would be the top choice, I think. However, if you want to tone down the gore, I suppose you could make the case for Sub-Zero (ice-based moves are not gory) OR Liu Kang (fireballs and flying kicks are no problem at all). But Liu Kang seems a little too cliche (and a little too similar to Ryu). Sub-Zero would be a strong competitor to Scorpion though, I think.

Yeah, so Mortal Kombat doesn't seem likely to get a character. It had a few games on Nintendo systems but it has generally prioritized the other consoles since the SNES era. It is far more gory than any other series represented, reveling in dismemberment and blood squirting. It doesn't really fit with Smash Bros. I mean, I guess you can point to Snake's more mature violence and Ridley's animalistic brutality, but still... they don't burn people to death and then rip their heads off.

Scorpion wouldn't really be properly represented without fatalities or a skull face, blood splattering from his spear move, etc. There might also be a feeling that he would need to include some traditional fighting game mechanics like Ryu, such as directional sequence inputs and light/strong versions of standard attacks. But I don't think they'd really want to do that. Sakurai previously had expressed opposition to the idea of even including characters from fighting games in the first place. Ryu is the exception there, I think - and it makes sense. Street Fighter is the most iconic fighting game and Ryu is their most prominent character.

There's also the matter that he's 3rd-party, from a developer that doesn't have a particularly close relationship with Nintendo. He's also Western-created and Western-owned, which probably would affect things. There seems to be some bias towards Japanese studios and Japanese-created characters. Mortal Kombat is also much more popular in the West than Japan. While they are catering to Western fans somewhat by including characters like Ridley and Dark Samus, and Little Mac in Smash 4 (of course, many characters are popular in both markets too), this is still a mark against Scorpion, in combination with several other problems he has.

Scorpion chances: 0.1%
Too gory, too Western, another fighting game character, not worth negotiating with Warner Bros for. But at least he is a fairly famous character unlike some that have been mentioned recently.

I'm not a fan of the idea.

You're asking for a world where we see Mortal Kombat get a character before both Street Fighter and Tekken do. Heck, Soul Calibur and GuiltyGear might have a better shot than Mortal Kombar does, for some pretty tragically-incidental reasons: they're based in Japan, and their main selling point isn't the fetishazation of brutal violence just as America likes it.

Mortal Kombat hit the big time to become a multimedia franchise, and then promptly moved to the side once the game market filled out, sitting comfy in its niche of nostalgic brutality. It crosses over plenty with other big American franchises, but struggles to make even a vaunted crossover with Street Fighter, one of its closest analogues gameplay-wise. Nintendo would have an even harder time trying to bridge such a gap, and far less incentive to do so.

Want: 0%
My first choice for a character with a hook in Smash is a lot "pudgier", so to speak. Either way, Mortal Kombat's success means nothing to me.

Mortal Kombat is iconic, but doesn't have a favorable story with Nintendo, and "nerfing" his killer aspects could make him too out of character if he ever makes in Smash.

There is little to be said that hasn’t already been expressed way better than I can, but I’ll do my best.

Scorpion is an inherently violent character. Mortal Kombat is an inherently violent game. I struggled to fathom how a toned down version of him could work, until someone reminded me of Mortal Kombat vs. DC. That shows me that it can be done, or at least it’s reasonable enough to be attempted, though the execution of that particular game left many disappointed.

Like some other person with a Mega Man avatar said (I should probably tag them EDIT: Erimir Erimir ), other characters like Lyu Kang and Sub-Zero could provide potentially less violent alternatives, while being as iconic (maybe Lyu Kang struggles more in the iconic part of the equation, if only when compared to his ninja brethren). But of course, the problem remains with Fatalities and X-Rays. Is there any point to putting a Mortal Kombat character in Smash without those? Sakurai cares about proper representation. Is that a compromise he is willing to make in order to at least get them in the game? The cases of Snake and Bayonetta should serve as examples. In the case of Snake it was easy, since Metal Gear is a violent but realistic game (well, realistic in its violence anyways), so all he had to do was figure out alternatives to guns. Bayonetta, on the other hand, got by through being so over the top you could basically just remove the blood without it being distracting. You could probably remove the blood from Scorpion’s chain moves and normal attacks and fire attacks. But is there any Fatality from which the blood and gore can be removed? Even if it were, would it really be a Fatality with that removal?

Then there’s the fact that Scorpion is a western-Made character from a western-made franchise. We have no precedent for that, and I am inclined to believe there is a bias against working with them. We shall see if maybe another character like Rayman can disprove that (although I doubt Rayman will ever get in Smash).

Personally, I wouldn’t be mad seeing such an iconic character as Scorpion in Smash, although I am somewhat reluctant, as I can’t shake the feeling that Scorpion’s western design clashes with the other characters in some way I really can’t explain. For what it’s worth, I love Mortal Kombat, and I hope someday we at least get either Scorpion in Smash or MK vs. SF so I can fight Ryu vs. Scorpion.

The over the top violent fighting game doesn't really feel like something meant for Smash. I really don't see any reason he'd get in to be quite honest as there isn't even Nintendo ties running.
Want - 0%
Nothing about him makes me think Nintendo or Smash. I was never fond of gore porn type games and while there are worse offenders by far out there... I just can't support him or the series for Smash at all.

Although the series once made steady and surprisingly frequent appearances on Nintendo consoles, Mortal Kombat has had nothing to do with Nintendo since Midway went bankrupt and turned the series over to NetherRealm. In addition, the while the series' influence was big, the series' popularity is somewhat regional. Aside from that, MK hasn't been traditionally been requested for Smash for some reason or another, and that includes Scorpion himself.

Want: abstain
I can't say I'm very into Scorpion aside from a few things, and I'm not interested in Mortal Kombat in the first place. So, I don't have interest in the idea of Scorpion in Smash, either.

I don't think Scorpion has any chance of getting in Smash, even if he's an iconic fighting game character. First off, no one even requested him in Smash Ballot, mostly because of the violent nature of his games. Even if he does get in somehow, he'll just be a watered-down version of Scorpion in the original game and no one, especially the MK fans, would like that. Second, if we're getting another fighting game character, it's most likely someone from either Tekken or Soul Calibur since Bandai Namco is developing this game. As such, he has competition with Heihachi, Jin and Nightmare.

Well, at least it's someone I know.

The thing is, Mortal Kombat is all about the violence. They have toned it down before - notably the MK vs DC spin off - but that was just as well liked as you'd expect. The main reason people like MK is because of the over-the-top gorn. Take that away, and you have a very standard fighter.

At least in the later games (particularly X) Scorpion's had a bit more characterization than 'edgy demon guy,' but that was what made him popular. And come on, it was the 90s so edginess was a major plus. It does leave him though a bit overblown to some people, who prefer the characters who weren't shoved in your face so much.

Not to mention that Smash has yet to take a Western 3rd party. While I think they should, I don't really think Scorpion should be the one they go with. MK is really disliked in Japan (isn't it banned there?), so it's not likely that they'll choose a first Western third party whose not even liked in one region. At least he has the recognizableness and iconicness going for him, but being cut off from the part of the world is not good for him at all.

We have a new concept, courtesy of the First Avenger himself, CaptainAmerica CaptainAmerica : Newcomer with low support (meaning somebody getting in with less than 20 supporters on Smashboards). Personally I think this is already confirmed with Richter, so I leave it up to TCT~Phantom TCT~Phantom whether it’s allowed, but it could always become another newcomer with low support.
yeah, I was thinking someone with a unique moveset, not an echo.

He comes from a franchise known for its violence and gore, Metal Gear and Bayonetta might get away with it but MK is literally the reason ERB/PEGI ratings exist. Gore is the franchise's selling point. We also haven't had a Mortal Kombat game on a Nintendo system since the n64. As a fighting game character, Heihatchi would take priority and as Western third party Rayman and Banjo&Kazooie would take priority.

Well he fits the iconic bill and would be awesome to have with Ryu in this game. But violence is the huge issue with him because sure you could cut out the blood like in Dc Vs Mortal Kombat but I just don't think Sakuari woukd add him as it would not please MK fans to be missing out on such a big part of what makes a MK game.

Mortal Kombat is an iconic series that suffers for a lot of reasons and a lot of unprecedented unknowns. Also unlike with Bayonetta or Metal Gear, where the protags can pretend to play nice for a crossover, raw violence is a more integral part of the characters and gameplay in MK. It's also not even the most popular fighting game series without a rep, that goes to Tekken.. which is made by a Japanese dev who is also devving this game.

Like every other Western third-party, I do not think Scorpion will happen. I think Japanese video game icons will be in Smash Ultimate first. But, there have been a couple of tweets by Ed Boon, who recently has been referencing Smash Bros and Mortal Kombat together a ton of times. Maybe there is somewhat of a chance of him happening. Personally, I do not think Scorpion's violent play-style will be much of an issue. I seen Sakurai be able to make characters true to themselves while also toning down the weapons/nudity/gore. Scorpion would probably maintain the level of violence Ridley has in Smash if he were playable.

Let's face the facts here, Scorpion has no chance of getting in Smash. The Mortal Kombat series is known for its intense blood and gore, and removing that from the character would misrepresent the games and character himself. Smash fans and Mortal Kombat fans would not be happy with the incredibly dumbed down version of Scorpion entering the game. Scorpion fan: "DEHHHH, Snake and Bayonetta made it in!" That's because they were requested by fans and a special friend of Sakurai's, and their series didn't heavily rely on intense blood and gore to please fans. Also Bayonetta was able to be toned down enough to fit in Smash.

There are many hurdles that hinders Scorpion from entering Smash. First, Mortal Kombat is well known for it's high level violence and that already lowers his chance. Sure, they can tone it down, but many fans would be disappointed by how underrepresented Scorpion is. Second, the game itself is made by a Western company and even worse, it's a third party character, so it's highly unlikely that Sakurai would go to great lengths to approach Netherrealm Studios in order to consider Scorpion into Smash. And finally, since he's a fighting game character, he has to compete with Heihachi Mishima, who has more chances of getting in than Scorpion due to the fact that it's made by a Japanese company, who also develops Ultimate.

Want: 5%

There's no questioning his value to gaming history, and he's certainly a beloved character and worthy of being included alongside the top names of gaming. However, it doesn't seem like Sakurai would really consider him unless he has a massive push from the fans, which I don't think he really does at the moment.

I honestly don't see toning down the violence to be that big of a problem. It's not like it wasn't done before, whether it was his guest appearance in Injustice or some of the more "family friendly" presentation of MK during the 90's (such as the children's cartoon). He could be made as "brutal" as Ridley without needing blood or gore. Throw in some classic MK iconography into his presentation; for example, his Final Smash would include the vocal and text lines for "Finish Him/Her/It" and "Fatality" (even occasionally have the Toasty Guy pop up) while making the burning affect no more violent that Bowser's Neutral Special (having characters despawn at higher percents like in Ridley and Bayo's FS) and you'd still get him to feel like an accurate portrayal.

Want: 100%
Being able to pit him against Ryu would be as iconic of a matchup as Sonic vs Mario. Even without that, he'd be quite fun for being so out of place, just the though of him donning the Bunny Hood or flailing about after eating Super Spicy Curry just brings a smile to my face. And who wouldn't love Kirby exclaiming "Get over here!" in his cutsie voice?

Double zeroes for Scorpion. There are lots of characters I want more. Add to that that Mortal Kombat is incredibly gory, more so than any series in Smash (unless you want to stretch it and include the Castlevania Netflix series I guess?), and to a great extent. Not to mention it doesn't even get Japanese releases oftentimes, and when it does, the sales aren't great.

Bayonetta was lucky to get a work around the sexual content and still be faithful to her character. It would be pretty much impossible for Scorpion as Mortal Kombat's draw is the gory violence and gruesome fatalities which would not fly here.

He's certainly an icon to video games, but the major hurdle most people see with Scorpion is Mortal Kombat's over-the-top violence. Japan in general aren't big fans of violence compared to the United States. It's as MacDaddy suggested, Scorpion's moveset could be made as brutal as Ridley's. He's going to have to be toned down like what happened with Bayonetta. I've never touched a Mortal Kombat so I don't know what you could do to get around the Fatalities.

Mortal Kombat is without a doubt, one of the mskt important game series of all time. Its impact reaches even Nintnedo games like Mario and Kirby-- with the creation of the ESRB and other rating boards. And, well, thats part if the problem. He is extremley violent. Now, that could ve worked around, but there isnt too much demand for Scorpion to begin with, so I dont think Sakurai would deem it to be wortg yhe effort. If we were going by iconic-ness, he would be in second only to Master Chief. Also, MK isnt even present in Japan most times.

MK is really disliked in Japan (isn't it banned there?)
It's not actively disliked, but it wasn't received well either, though there is a small cult following. There's been trouble in localizing the titles due to the grotesque violence (Koei failed in their attempt to localize Deadly Alliance) and Samurai Spirits had a more accepted level of bloodiness, so people in general just forgot about Mortal Kombat. After Trilogy, there hadn't been a Japanese release until very recently.... the mobile version of Mortal Kombat X.

Even with Mortal Kombat's rather violent nature there's other hurdles to overcome. It's a Western third party, it's not as present in Japan, it doesn't have the best Nintendo presence, I don't see a lot of support for Smash, etc. There's a tiny chance because it's iconic, and Scorpion's a frontrunner if Mortal Kombat representation manages to happen, but I think Sakurai would definitely go for other third parties.

Another notable third party I personally don't play, but while usually I rate those higher, in this case I don't feel the series would fit in Smash that well. I'd prefer other choices.

Mortal Kombat fan since the beginning. Scorpion fan overall. Best MK ninja ever. His appearance would be a huge WTF throughout the video game community which would be awesome to see. Plus, it’s possible to tone down MK characters considering MKvsDC and Injustice 1 and 2. Ridley is pretty savage but Scorpion would be a different kind of savage that’s more sinister and calculating. And MK might not fit into Smash but that’s the beauty of it - trying to get it to fit. We saw it with other series so why not give MK a try. Plus, seeing Kirby wearing scorpions mask and yelling “Get over here” would be priceless.

Being from a fighting game series is a step in the right direction. However, to get any Mortal Kombat character in, 1 of 2 things would need to happen. Either the gore would needs to be significantly reduced, which would run the risk of not doing the character justice, or the gore would have to be brought into smash, which I really doubt Sakurai would do.

Only reason he has a small chance is that he's a big video game icon in the fighting game genre. Other than that, his games have a notoriety for being quite violent. While characters from violent games have been added to Smash (Snake and Bayonetta), they had the added advantage of having a large support-base to back them up (for Snake's case, it was his return to Smash since the initial circumstances for his inclusion in Brawl were different). Scorpion barely has much Smash support the last time I checked. Add to the fact he is a western third-party, and things don't seem to hold up well for Scorpion right now.

This is one of those characters I can't give an accurate want score for.

Similar points brought up with past Alola Pokemon rated will probably come up once again.

He's too violent to be considered in Smash, despite being one of the most iconic fighting game characters. Sure, Snake and Bayonetta were added in Smash, but their games aren't as violent as Mortal Kombat did. Also, he's a Western third party, which doesn't help his chances at all.

I actually wouldn't mind if they put Scorpion into Smash. We could finally have a rematch between Ryu and Scorpion from Death Battle.

Imo I could see Sub Zero being chosen first or have one as an echo of the other but with their unique moves to separate them. MK is small in Japan, and the series is not known much for its Nintendo history, MK has importance in gaming history, but it is still primarily western. Until it crosses over into Japan, I can’t see it getting in.

I like the idea of MK content since it would be cathartic to see a huge franchise like that in smash. I’m a sub zero guy though.

Day over, rate Medusa and Tapu Koko, predict Monster Hunter Stage.

Oh yeah, my ratings.

He's yet another third party character with a nonexistent Smash fanbase. The violence from his series is probably a concern, too.
