The Movement - Scream

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sniLU-zBBPQ

This thread is meant not only meant for fun, but to also express your own music tastes and hopefully benefit from it. There was a metal forum I was on that did this, but it was only with metal songs...and I like a lot more than metal. :awesome:

It was pretty eh. It sounded like a lot of other songs with that 90's rock feel about it.

I'm torn between sharing some new songs I'm interested in, or trying to expose more people to a horse I've beaten to death lately.

I'll go with the latter.

Wow, I have never heard or even thought of Rx Bandits sounding like that! I love how different people perceive music differently. :)

-- For the song posted. 6/10. I actually liked it. Not something I would probably listen to, but I can definitely appreciate it.

6/10 Not my favorite ska, but it wasn't bad. It got a bit bland over time, idk if it was just because I listen to things with more energy or if the only ska i usually listen to is Streetlight Manifesto, but it just didn't quite get there for me.

Animals As Leaders - CAFO

This song is just so groovy and yet technical as hell at the same time, I love it to death. It might be in my Top 20 favorite songs of all time (Counting all of BTBAM's Colors as a single song).

Horrible, overly technical with no real build up or climax. Repetition is ok but when the swelling leads to nothing it can only be seen as filler and bad direction. Seems like the band wanted to show case their ability to hit and play things really fast instead of actually putting thought into the notes they were playing.

Feast your ears on this.

Now that's some work right there, every outkast song i hear is legit lol. 9/10

Doubt anybody's gonna like this, but this song's been stuck in my head for a bit.

Motionless In White - Abigail

:205:
First problem: It's screamo. The goal of screaming would appear to be to emphasize lyrics, however it does the opposite. Then, like all screamo does, they switch occasionally to the generic screamo singing voice. I haven't heard a single screamo band do a non-screaming singing voice that sounded different from the next. The guitar is okay, pretty generic. I liked the riff around the part when the guy screams something about hands on the sky. The drums suffer from screamo syndrome: double bass pedals as much as you can and try to destroy the crash cymbal. The rest is indistinguishable. Oh, look, a breakdown. Seriously, **** breakdowns. Someone who has never touched a guitar could be taught a breakdown. You just continue doing the mindless kill-the-crash-cymbal drumming and semi-rhythmically hit the lowest note your guitar plays. Hell, this song lacks the one (not really) redeeming part of screamo: the guitar solo. Which is surprising, because screamo is over saturated with guitar solos.

sheesh, you're closeminded about breakdowns, and ignorant about heavy music in general (that is not screamo music). I have to admit, the breakdowns in that particular song are incredibly generic and the first one is super most boring one I've heard in a long time, but writing off every single instance of a musical technique is silly.
regardless, props for actually doing a semi-indepth review instead of just saying "i liked it/didn't like it"!

as for your track, it's pretty okay. This guy reminds me way too much of Atmosphere though. The beat sounds like typical Atmosphere, the guy's flow and delivery sounds a lot like Slug's. To be honest, I think the video for this is a lot more interesting than the song. I might change if I read the lyrics and they really impress me though.

rated "listenable but not something I would put on" out of 5

and for my track.

Reviewing reviews ftw! Most of my "general" comparisons (i.e. GRR BREAKDOWNS SUCK) are the result of the ****ty screamo **** my screamo friends show me. I dunno, maybe they just have really bad taste and it's actually the best genre ever.

Also, I see where you're coming from with the Atmosphere comparisons. That said, I do really like Atmosphere.

Lol I know what you guys mean, idk why but that song got stuck in my head and wouldn't leave :c

Review of LT's post: Not bad at all, the pace was a grinding slow, but the music itself was rather pleasing, very calming. Really reminds me of an early 90's suspense movie soundtrack lol. 7/10

Here's something a bit more pleasing (hopefully) and less generic lol:

Enter Shikari - Destabilise

I know the aesthetic of the song seems a bit played out, synth driven rock with random breakdowns and such, but I do feel these guys have a rather unique approach to it all.

EDIT: sry for ninja lol

I give it a 7.2 / 10.

I guess posting something which is in a foreign language might not be a very good idea, but here's an English version.

2NE1 - Can't Nobody (English)

Ignore the swear word in the beginning and slightly accented Englsih, please!

It's just something I've found myself replaying lately.

I like this a lot. The vocals took a minute to grow on me but they're pretty nice. He kinda sounds like Dave Matthews. It's really chill, and nice lyrics.

Amazing album cover too.

Tbh, the change ups in the song were hard to get used to, but once I got past it, I enjoyed it. Vocals were good, guitar work was good.

Just an overall enjoyable song, though I feel like they could have ended it better. 7.8/10

3/10 Some parts were cool, but it is not my kind of music. I have a hard time enjoying rap if it is not used in genre blending (Philly Slick, The Movement..) I just thought it was kind of vanilla. =/

It's nice to hear a legitimately good cover in a sea of computer microphone basement covers on youtube. Both of their voices fit the song very well and the instrumentals sounded pretty good.

I gotta say, the video was really entertaining.

I'm generally not a fan of non-English songs (I'm a lyrics guy), but as far as non-English songs go, this one wasn't too bad. It wasn't annoying at all, had a catchy beat, and was generally fun to listen to.

It's very lo-fi (recorded with a digital video camera if I'm not mistaken), so you may need to listen carefully to understand the lyrics.

Wait a second, I thought this thread was called "Rate the song posted above [you]," not "Say 'wtf' to the song posted above you and just try to get people to listen to the kind of music you like" thread. Huh.

One thing I'd like to encourage people to do is to not just have a simple number rating. Try to say something about the song. What did you like, what didn't you like, etc. I'm not saying you need to write an essay about each song, but at least have some substance so it's not just people posting songs they like without really listening to the previous song

Wow, I didn't mean to not have a rating. I am really sorry. I could've sworn I put a rating. My apologies. I remember giving it a 2/10.

edit;

@Meg and Dia - Fighting for Nothing. 6/10. Pretty decent song, wasn't a big fan of the vocalists, though.

Vampire Weekend - Walcott

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwiOHDg8O3I
Gonna be as non-bias as possible.

The overall rhythm is catchy, but that bass line has been used so many times in other Indie songs, it makes the whole atmosphere of the song kinda redundant and "I've heard this before" kinda feel. They did spice it up with the violin and xylophone (if that's what it is?)

For such a soothing tone and song, it feels strange for him to drop a f bomb a few times towards the end. I think he should have excluded that for this song.

I would have to listen to this song about 10 times before I give a solid opinion on lyrics, but as of now, I think they are okay. Nothing deep or clever for the most part. Just simple.

Overall, simple song, but has a nice catchy tune to listen too. I think overall, it would appeal to a lot of people.

6/10

Backstreet boys/10.

I'm sorry, I just can't bring myself to actually rate them in present times. I listened to about 25 seconds. I mainly stopped because I have about as much musical respect for them as I do for Bieber, and I couldn't stand to listen to one of them sing about wanting to get married and starting it out with (they always do) the "HEEEYYY" in falsetto. Backstreet boys are living cliches.

It may be very good as ambiance. 6/10

This is really good. I play trumpet, but rarely ever listen to any jazz outside of what my teachers showed me. It is kinda dark out now, and I have a huge window next to me...so this song really fits my mood/environment lol. 8/10

If you don't listen to the whole song, DON'T POST. It's in the title of the thread, people. Also, don't make blanket insults about the band themselves. It has nothing to do with the quality of the individual song.

As for Palpi's Sonata Arctica song:

I was not digging this very much at first. I'm not a fan of his singing, and the music was a little tepid. But then the part around 4:30 comes in, and it totally kicked my butt. That organ melody and the chord progression is so beautiful and epic. Unfortunately, it slows down again and doesn't quite reach that same level again. The quiet outro with the strings and the wolf howl (?) is very cool though.

I liked the song. Each transition added something new to the song, and each one was a great change of pace...(not actual tempo...ya know what i mean haha) I think have heard of Horse the band before...not sure where though. I really dig the 8-bit sounds. It reminds me oh this techno group called 8-bit weapon. Speaking of 8-bit weapon....

It's not in the title of the thread. And the only rule is that you give the song a legitimate listen, not to listen to the whole song.
I legitimately listened to the first almost-minute of that song and knew (especially since the group is always strophic (stanza-based with repeats)) that I had heard all I really needed to. And what I heard was... exactly like the rest of their stuff, which is cheesy I-want-to-love-you music where they say hey hey in falsetto all the time (exaggeration, but only a little bit). It's really easy to make accurate generalizations in music. I gave it a listen in case it was any better than anything else they put out, and it wasn't.
There ya go.
---------------
8-bit Weapon -- Arcade

I like 8-bit-sounding music for nostalgic value, mainly. But all I could think of when listening to this was that the main melodic line sounded like a voice trying to sing words through a really heavy auto-tune.
It was a cool piece, but upon second listening, I found that it... never moves. The same bass line remains throughout and what I normally like to listen to in 8-bit stuff (this actually doesn't -quite- sound 8-bit to me, but I'm not factoring that into the rating) is modal mixture. I mean, the melodic line has a bunch of cool, non-diatonic notes, but... I'd rather hear everything work together and mix modes. This group's take on this style of music (judging from this piece) isn't -exactly- my cup of tea.
4/10
---------------
I'm not sure how many of you are classically trained musicians. I'd love to know how someone who isn't classically trained hears this. Or anyone who is. Actually, I'll add a second option, so anyone can rate one, the other, or both.

I listened to the first piece. He is obviously a skilled pianist...but the actually piece got kind of repetitive...there was no enthralling melodies, no atmosphere, nothing really to drag me in to the music. I could appreciate his playing, but as for the actual music...5/10
