Edit: I dropped the castlist from 50 to 45 (closer to my original number) dropping:
- 1 Fire Emblem Rep
- 1 Metroid Rep
- Lip from Panel de Pon
- 2 Third Party Reps
I also rewrote my theory on Fire Emblem reps heavily. Added to Shiek and why I put in Vaati over Midna.

\ = Characters that take each other's place based on different theories on the cast list.
I'll also do a brief explanation on my choices for new characters (not returning).
On Shiek, Zelda is indeed styled after TP Zelda. However Zelda's moveset is still OoT, and quite frankly Smash Bros. pays absolutely no heed to canon AT ALL. Which has been shown time and time again. TP is not a proper arguement against Shiek. END OF TOPIC.
On Vaati, Vaati adds to our villainy rep. Now the first answer is "Who cares, where's Midna" and the second answer "What about Zant". The answer is everything else is TPish, why do you want these guys? Midna is certainly possible, and since Brawl isn't canon she can even have Wolf Link with her, Zant is also a villain. Zelda does not revolve around Twilight Princess. Vaati has 3 appearances, he'd make for an interesting character, and he's evil.
In this case I put the 3 wilds on the fourth spot. Sheeda is the romantic female lead of FE1/3/11(theory). She's a Pegasus Knight which gives her props as part of that pattern (Fire Emblem games have 3+ Pegasus riders to do a Triangle attack), and is pretty well important to her games plot, even as a non-lord.
Mist is next, she's our big lug Ike's little sister. However she's not needed for the game, she does haver her own unique sword, her own promotional item, she's a unique class in the game, and has a fair ammount of screentime. I've never had her die in 10 so I can't be sure if her 'death' causes her to die or just be badly wounded.
Mia is the odd one out, she's not plot important. She is a follow through in a Fire Emblem pattern: Female Swordmasters. However I'm a fanboy and she has the glimmer of hope being on the list.
5 4 are from Animal Crossing, Panel de Pon, Golden Sun, Custom Robo, and Pikmin respectively.
That's how I see it anyway. Any crits that aren't flames are welcome.

Bowser Jr. and Geno seem to be well liked characters, rightly I'm not a huge Mario fan, but either one (or both) could make it in. There aren't many Mario characters wanted for the game aside them.
Cel-Shaded AKA Celda Link and Vaati are a pair to represent the GBA/DS set. Celda Link got three votes off the Sakurai list and would be a good upgrade/replacement for Y. Link, and Vaati is just a cool character. The others are recurrings that have no direct negatives to them.

Lucario is pretty much the only Pokemon with a chance of getting in. I'd personally perfer Weavile but I'm not that set on it's inclusion.
I've finally dropped my FE wishlist to four reps. It can be 3, and there's still a chance at five. However 3-4 is more likely due to regulating Fire Emblem to "Lord" characters with maybe a spot for a non-Lord with enough pull at the Fire Emblem pattern.

People like Krystal, or hate Krystal. Rightly it doesn't matter, the Sakurai list likes Krystal and as far as Star Fox reps goes, she wins.
Most people think three monkeys is too much, or think King K. Rool will be too much like Bowser. So I picked not to decide. Rool is as important a DKC character as DK or Diddy (he was in more games than DK, technically). Dixie, Tiny, and Lankey are the only other DK characters to make it into the various racing games after the main DK games. Now, I dislike Lankey and figured the other two have the better shot.
Three Kirby characters, knowing how modest Sakurai is, this is just crazy. /SARCASM
Ridley is like Krystal, as close to a Shoe-in as anyone can get. I was trying to up the count of the more standard series. Edit: I took out the Third Metroid Rep, covered at the edit at the top of the post.

These five seem the most likely of the loner class of characters. Series with enough want and like to get their own spot, but not big enough or grand enough to be a full on multi-person cast (either by lack of cast or lack of popularity). These
I dropped the third Party count to three as my list tweak. Capcom likes crossovers, and Rock Man is their mascot, that's easy. There are other third parties that could get cast... but not before Rock Man and Capcom.
