SSBM and SSBB singles and doubles
Catherine
Project M singles

Signups for Melee and Brawl Doubles are at 10:30 and I'll try to kick things off at around 11:00. All single event signups will happen at around lunch which is between 12 and 1pm

Cost:

$15 venue fee at the door or $12 if you pre register on their site which entitles you to play friendlies in any game plus your own spot to setup your PC if you choose to do so.

All Brawl and Melee events will cost $5 to enter whilst Project M and Catherine are free. (This may change slightly depending on overall attendance. For example if no one enters any Melee events then I may bump Project M to $5)

What equipment to bring:

Smash: Bring your own Gamecube controller (or Wiimote/Wiimote Nunchuck/Classic Controller for Brawl if that’s all you’ll be entering in (and if that’s how you roll)

While bringing a Gamecube/Wii setup with a T.V (preferably a CRT screen) is appreciated and sometimes recommended, it is not required. If we feel as though we’ll be short in supply we’ll let everyone know otherwise just let me know that you’ll be bringing one.

A Catherine setup will be provided (one is all that is needed for a tournament usually since games finish really quickly) but if you prefer using a stick over a controller then by all means bring one with you.

For anyone wishing to bring their computers to the LAN I highly recommend you register at:

Super Smash Bros Brawl Ruleset:

General Gameplay Rules
1. 3 Stocks
2. 8 Minute Time Limit
3. Items set to "Off" and "None"
4. All infinites are legal.
5. Meta Knight's Infinite Cape Glitch and Extended Cape Glitch are banned.
6. There is a Ledge Grab Limit of 35 for Metaknight, and 50 for all other characters. (If a game goes to time and one player goes over the Ledge Grab Limit for their character, they will automatically lose the game. If both players exceed their Ledge Grab Limit, then this rule is ignored).
7. The act of stalling is banned: stalling is intentionally making the game unplayable: Such as becoming invisible, continuing infinites past 300%, and reaching a position that your opponent can never reach you.
8. Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (i.e., freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in a forfeit of that match for the player that initiated the action. You are responsible for knowing your own character, and must be wary about accidentally triggering one of these effects.
9. If the Ledge Grab Limit does not declare one player the winner, the winner will be declared by what the game says in all situations, except for when players are presented with sudden death:
o In the event of a match going to time, the winner will be determined by who has less percent (stock difference still takes priority but will be shown in the results screen).
o If the match ends with both players dying at the same time via suicide move then the initiator is declared the winner.
o If the match ends with both players at equal percent or if both players die simaltaniously by means other than suicide moves, a one stock three minute rematch will be played on the same stage. For a tie-breaker match, a Ledge Grab Limit of 18 is introduced for all characters.

Modified Rules for Doubles:
1. Team Attack is set to "On"
2. Life stealing is allowed.
3. In the event of a game reaching the time limit, if a single player on a team exceeds their Ledge Grab Limit, that team loses. If one or more players on both teams exceed their Ledge Grab Limit, then the Ledge Grab Limit rule is ignored.
4. In the event of a game going to time and the Ledge Grab Limit can’t determine a winner and both teams have an equal amount of combined stocks, than whichever team has a lower combined percent is declared the winner.
5. If a player is using the character Pokemon Trainer, Lucario, or Sonic, either team may request that team colors be changed to make it easier to tell the difference between team players.

Set Procedure:
1. Player Priority is determined if it can’t be agreed on. (See below for details)
2. Each Team selects one controller port to use for each Player.
3. Each Team selects one character for each Player. A double blind pick may be called by any player.
4. The first game is played on a Stage selected from the Starter Stage List either by mutual consent or through the Stage Striking Method. The order of stage striking will be 1-2-2-1 (Team 1 strikes a stage, followed by Team 2 striking two stages, with Team 1 then striking one of the two remaining stages).
5. The first match is played.
6. The team that lost the previous match may opt to re-pick controller ports (with themselves picking first).
7. The Team that won the previous match may announce one "Stage Ban" if they have not already done so in this set.
8. The Team that lost the previous match announces the stage for the next match from either the Starter or the Counterpick Stage List. Any Stage named as a "Stage Ban" by the either Team may not be selected. No Stage may be used by a Team that has already won on that Stage in this set.
9. The Team that won the previous match chooses one character for each Player.
10. The Team that lost the previous match chooses one character for each Player.
11. The next match is played.
12. Repeat steps 6-11 for all proceeding matches.

Determining Player Priority:
If there is a dispute in controller port selection or initiating Stage Strike use the following method:
Teams agree to Rock-Paper-Scissors, otherwise it is determined with a coin-flip. The winning Team shall either elect to have first choice in port selection or first choice in Stage Strike. Whichever Team does not receive first choice in Port Selection will be compensated with first choice in Stage Striking.
Note: In Doubles, port selection is ordered 1-2-2-1 fashion (with Team-1 having first choice in controller slot select, Team-2 having both second and third choice, and the final slot going to Team-1).

Stage List:

Starters:
o Battlefield
o Lylat Cruise
o Pokemon Stadium 1
o Smashville
o Yoshi's Island (Brawl)

Counterpicks:
o Battleship Halberd
o Brinstar
o Castle Siege
o Delfino Plaza
o Final Destination
o Frigate Orpheon

Conduct Rules:
1. BYOC (Bring your own controller): Players are expected to bring their own controller and be prepared for every tournament set.
2. Pausing may be turned off by request and the request cannot be denied. In the event pause is on and is pressed, whether by accident or on purpose, the result will be a loss of the current stock for the perpetrating player.
3. Players who use the Wii Remote must take the batteries out of the Wii Remote when not playing. If the Wii Remote is still synced up to a Wii with the batteries in, you could unintentionally disrupt a match. If problems persist, a DQ may happen.
4. You are responsible for your own controller and name tag. Any malfunctions or errors that occur are your responsibility (including battery issues with a Wii Remote), so bring an extra controller if possible and always check to make sure you're using the correct settings BEFORE a match is played. Both parties need to agree if a match is to be paused or restarted because of these problems.
5. Intentional forfeiting, match fixing, splitting, and any other forms of bracket manipulation are not allowed and punishable by the TO.
6. No substitutions are allowed for singles or doubles.
7. Coaching is allowed only between games, not during. Failure to adhere to this will lead to punishment at the TO's discretion, which could include the removal from the venue.
8. DQ Rule: Arriving too late for a match will result in a DQ. Player(s) will have 5 minutes to show up before a loss of the first match. 5 more minutes results in a loss of the set. For doubles, both players on a team need to be present in order to play.
9. The tournament organizer has the right to save/record any tournament match if possible and has the right to upload said match.
10. Regarding textures and other game hacks:
o Players may request that any texture, stage, or other hacks be disabled during a tournament set. If this is unable to be done, they may switch to a different setup if available.
o The BBR-RC recommends players do not use intrusive texture and stage hacks.
o Players are not allowed to use any game altering hacks, such as no-tripping or model hacks. If someone is caught setting up a system they brought with such hacks enabled can face punishment at the TO's discretion. [/LEFT]
Luigi's Dungeon (OUTDATED)
The Brisbane All Brawl Tournament!

Newcomers:
If you're new to the tournament scene here are a couple of frequently asked questions!

"I'm not very good, should I still come?"

These tournaments are open to everyone who is interested in playing Super Smash Brothers Brawl. It is a friendly atmosphere, with players of all skill levels competing. Everyone has to start somewhere :)

"How old is everyone?"
We have people from all ages attending. The majority of players are between 15 & 24, but this doesn't mean if you fall outside of this age group you shouldn't attend. All players are very welcome.

"What do I need to bring?"
The most important thing to bring with you is your controller, as it can be hard to provide controls for players. It also helps to bring Wii's & Copies of Brawl to the tournament, but if you can't, don't worry about it. Don't forget to label your things with your names as well.

"What if I get lost, who do I contact?"
Call AD3PT (Matt) on 0437 483 135 or contact me via private message on Smashboards.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl Singles & Doubles.

$10 for singles per person.

No venue fee.

Start times for the tournament & events will be posted on here as each tournament date is announced.

Important Notes:

Luigi's Dungeon Tournaments:

As I will be holding these tournaments from my own home, I ask participants to respect a few simple house rules to ensure the enjoyment of all who attend.

1. When attending, feel free to help yourself to a drink from the fridge or snacks like chips etc from the pantry. However, as this can become understandably costly, I ask that participants to please bring their own food & drinks or 1 item to share amongst the group.
2. Keep noise to a minimum after 8pm. I live in close quarters to other houses so please maintain a comfortable noise level without taking away to much of the fun ;).
3. Respect all property. I understand accidents happen, but please insure to take care when engaging in activities in the household.
5. If you use a cup, either clean it up straight away, or keep it for the rest of the day. With so many people in one household, cups tend to disappear pretty quickly.
6. When a new tournament is posted, please do your best to confirm attendance before the day on this thread, so I am aware of the number of people coming.
7. Have fun and improve your Smash Brothers Brawl skills ;)

I don't believe all this is to much to ask, given the free venue and situation. Hope to see many faces, new & old at the next tournament.

i personally dont think isolating the scene is ever a good thing.

10 bucks for singles entry is a bit steep, also.

I think it can be a good thing.

Different events for each game allows players more focus on the game of the day
And it could also mean that there be more smash filled days
and more time for pools due to less events

It can actually let players spend more time on BOTH games than have to dedicate to one moreso, which I find tends to be the case.

Im not telling you it IS better
Im just saying it can be better :3
10 bucks entry wtf

I'd say its all fine really. Only problem is maybe the entry fee and thats about it.

But, its up to the TO really. Hope your tournaments run well in the future :)

Well, it's at his house, with no venue fee (which would most probably be $5 anyways). So really he's just adding the venue fee into the singles pot.

Ohhh, then thats completely understandable then. I just assumed a Venue xD.

I wish I could hold tournaments at my house =( lol. I have the room for it, but i live in the middle of nowhere + my parents probably wouldn't support the idea xP

It'd be cooler to have melee and brawl tourneys but it makes more sense to have straight brawl seeing as its in his house and he has limited space.

Not sure about the future of QLD brawl though. If, me, oldman, jaice, matt and tianh quit the scene like we said we were gonna do a few months ago, there'd only be toki, cal, popdart, blade, vyse, jesmo and arrow left really. We'd have to get some new people into the scene if we're to keep it alive as I don't really see it being sustained like this for more than a year. In the space of a year, at least half the scene has quit.

SWH though.

its how brains are supposed to work

qld brawl brains - find cheap tactic
exploit as much as possible
if it didn't work?
you didn't exploit it enough

smash is going the same way as halo

halo 2 was huge.. bigger than any other console game competitive wise. H3 had a huge amount of hype when it came out but slowly people got annoyed at it and moved on to other games. Reach came out and almost killed halo entirely, and most moved on to black ops etc.

melee and brawl are the same. When the next smash comes out, the majority of the scene will once again move to the next best thing aka mvc3. Which is already happening...

cheap tactics dont work in brawl.

*toooooooornadoooooo*

oh wait.

yeah, the melbourne scene is really struggling too. it's hard to get new people to stay when they're already 2+ years behind the metagame.

all of these things have gotta end sometime, i suppose. i kinda can't imagine life without smash, though.

Venue fee at any other QLD event is usually $10, so the added pot money is exactly as Hotdog said. However if enough people feel as though this is too much to put up for grabs for 1st to 5th, I am happy to change it.

I think Brawl in QLD has suffered a lot because of the melee scene being a part of it on occasions. The main reason it needed to be split, is due to the negativity of some individuals towards the brawl scene in general. Sadly this thread can't escape that by being on here... I have had at least 5 people in QLD ask for the scenes to be split, and I personally prefer it now too.

Now that I have started a tournament, I will now be focused on maximising attendance. I know atleast 15 people outside of the regular scene who play smash and are interested to join. Most have been deterred by the distance they had to travel to get to tournaments because of the Gold Coast/Brisbane split. However my house is central to both, and many of these outside players have attended other meets and events at my house on other occasions.

I have a lot of ideas to entice new players to join too, like waving the entry fee for your first tournament. Making a side event where new players get to team with high ranked players in a doubles format. Just things to make the transition into competitive play not so steep.

It depends on the person. When I'm playing Smash, I'm constantly evaluating myself and trying to improve, too... but when I'm say writing an essay I am not.

I am absolutely horrible at writing essays, and if I were to write a thousand essays, I'd still be no better than I am right now. This is because I don't evaluate or self-assess myself whilst writing essays - I am purely writing to finish as soon as possible with as satisfactory a mark as possible. Some people do this when it comes to Smash, and thus aren't improving when they play.

I know personally, the reason I don't improve when it comes to essays is that I simply don't know what I'm supposed to do or what I'm supposed to be looking for to improve (and feedback is often useless because of this), and I know some people suffer from this barrier when it comes to Smash. Others require different training methods (such as practising alone in training mode) to improve, but may not have the time or the motivation to do so thus don't see improvements. Others may require more obscure training methods but do not know what they are.

In the end it comes down to the individual.

TL;DR: not everybody improves from playing others.

I saw ZXVs post and I was like D:
but then I saw TL;DR so i was like :D

Melbs Brawl Scene has gotten smaller ever since we started having tournaments alongside Melee rather than seperated. coincidence?
I think ... so.

:s

dw Attila, The gears of Melb Brawl will keep turning.
Myself, Jei, Afropony, Earl, Yourself, Tibor, Toshi
We'll keep playing
and as long as we do, it'll be competitive and the matches will be intense
and the skill level will continue to grow between us.
and all will be well

then I read ZXVs post anyway.
