Panel de Pwnage! Lip for SSB4!



Lip is sort of a glass cannon-type of a character that could be seen in Smash: she has many things referencing to her (Lip's Stick, Kirby's Garbage Block-cameo in Stone-move, many stickers and the song). Yet, she's pretty obscure to many people outside of Puzzle League-fame and clearly has localisation as her biggest obstacle yet. She's been replaced or clipped out countless times and hasn't yet made any proper appearance outside of Japan.

Will this mean she's completely out of question to have a playable spot though?

Who is Lip?






From Nintendo's long-running puzzle series Panel De Pon, known as Puzzle League outside of Japan, Lip is fairy who controls and grows flowers with her iconic magic, and is the face of the series, debuting in the first titular game in Japan-only.

Back in the peaceful days in fairy wonderland of Popples, the Devil King Thanatos had cast a spell all over its individual kingdoms, affecting the residents of the land and causing fighting among the fairies. Lip was luckily unaffected due her iconic magic wand, Lip's Stick.
It was thus up to her to get out, and travel to each destination where her fairy friends were brooding with hate and defeat each of them in the game of Panel De Pon (Panel Pop) to return their personalities to normal. After breaking every spell from her friends, she proceeded to face off against Thanatos. What she would discover would proceed to change her entire life...

During localizing Panel De Pon for outerseas, NOA found the bishoujo theme too girly despite it's compelling gameplay and thus were being afraid the game bombing among the intended American gamer audience back then - that being primarily boys. With Yoshi becoming more popular as his own character, thanks to SMW2: Yoshi's Island, fairy group got cut for more widely accepted group consisting of Yoshi and his friends. To ensure even better sales, they went to borrow the name "Tetris" to draw in more hardcore audience: thus the beloved and quirky puzzle game, Tetris Attack was born. Pokemon Puzzle League was born in the same way, albeit from a cancelled Panel De Pon 64-game, which was then resurfaced as it's standalone game featuring fairies again (or rather, their incarnations), ported to Nintendo Puzzle Collection in Japan.

This trend has kept on in some form or another, which has rendered Lip almost completely abandoned by her own series. While localisation is nowadays very tolerable at the anime-styled or quirky-japanese-humour games, NOA oddly kept clipping anything referring to game's original form, as seen in latest Puzzle League-installment, Planet Puzzle League. The Japanese version of the game had a stage featuring Lip as an unlockable but was locked away in the outer-sea installments. Since then we haven't seen anything Puzzle League-related produced since.

Lip might be best known from her faceless, but constant references to her games in SSB-games. Her wand, Lip's Stick, is the most peculiar of battering items, being able to plant a poisonous flower on opponent's head that racks on damages continuously, and can be strengthened even further to a bigger flower by battering more. This is Smash's adaptation to on PDP's rule on defeating opponents in VS Mode, primarily by doing chains to fill opponent's space with garbage blocks.





Also another reference to her comes in form of Kirby's many transformations in his Stone-Down Special: one of them is Kirby transforming into a cute pink block with flower patterns. This is a Garbage Block of Lip's color scheme pattern in the game:







While Lip hasn't much appeared these days aside from things referring to her in SSB and Puzzle League, she's been found having a developed role in Skip's action adventure game Captain Rainbow.

Personality-wise, she's optimistic and said to be little tomboyish. However, it appears she wasn't first confident of herself and her destiny as a new queen - Captain Rainbow had shown her wish being a "wonderful magic user", which might hint on something like that.

As seen from her appearances, The Fairy Of Flowers has a lot of charm and is a fan-favourite of many due her cuteness. Her magical wand is undoubtedly the catalyst to everything of her getting recognized lately, and is seemingly gaining even more fame than before, thanks to SSB4 going for more unique and character-specific playstyles, which could favour Lip and her wand being evolved up from its current item status in Super Smash Bros-series.

How would she play like?






Lip would be a nightmare to those who rush down on beating their opponents and are easy to drive to a corner: with quirky playstyle of a poisonous "drainer", she emphasizes on making opponent sap up damage by her flower magic while zoning and using tactics in order to stall her enemies around as they grow more weary from the poison damage.

Elaborating also is her being flower fairy, which lends her to use magic powers with a flowery plant-life motive and so on. Combined with her baton, this could give her range on her attacks, which would strengthen her zoning game. To compliment her light weight and fairy motive, with this would be her being very graceful fighter on air, perhaps using multiple jumps by playful "skips".

To enforce all the above, Lip would have to have a low KO-power to emphasize this, but her damage potential could be obscenely huge, if not the biggest when compared to rest of the fighters. This reflects upon Panel De Pon's nature of racking chains in sequence to grow bigger garbage blocks to bury your opponent's block stack down. It would be also an evolved version of a playstyle adapted from Lip's Stick-item itself. Being also a zoner, she should play a keep-away in order to ensure KOs without being too close to the opponent having Rage. To aid with this playstyle, she would have unique tools, such as the cursor mechanic from her game series to swap her placement with her opponent and deal with incoming projectiles at her direction, and Garbage Blocks to punish airborne opponents or give her some space between her opponents.

Why support Lip?



She's one of the most known obscure characters in Nintendo, and is still fairly popular in Japan. (Panel De Pon's japanese official site's still on even to this day)

And nowadays, she has gained more fame than ever, thanks to some games like Captain Rainbow and increased awareness by certain gamers about her original games. There's also the fact that not only Little Mac, the character also appearing in Captain Rainbow, is now one of the newcomers in SSB4, but also got a trophy showcasing himself in his fat form from Captain Rainbow, further supporting the theory of Lip getting some presentation as well.

Back in SSB64-days, Lip was once requested to Sakurai, but he was concerned about Lip's obscurity, wondering would anyone recognize, or even know about her if being added. However, he called Panel De Pon " a true masterpiece", suggesting people (interviewing him) go and try the game. As seen from Smash which seemingly shows references upon her in some form or another, there might be some evidence that she has some regard from Sakurai.

Other notes to say is that Lip could be the fully realized puzzle representative to Smash, making its roster have more variety in means of Nintendo's genres represented. No doubt also is that she could be able to present Nintendo's lines in the puzzle genre more uniquely than Dr.Mario did despite the latter being more recognizable: giving us a new and fully-fledged character rather than another clone. (Yet, so we did :4drmario:)

Along with this is the fact Panel De Pon / Puzzle League has been completely put to collect dust since 2007 - despite today's gaming market (notably mobile) tolerating, and even playing many similar games, some which have proved to be popular. Lastly, the series has some historical values for being one of the last games produced by Gunpei Yokoi before he left Nintendo.

Lastly, if she would be included along with Lip Stick being now very familiar item for Smash-veterans, it would make her also more easier to meet on to the audience play Smash Bros and find out that she's the original owner. This would get us to the full circle about referencing to Panel De Pon/Puzzle League-series- bringing them as one of the mainstay puzzle franchise representative for Super Smash Bros. As it'll be inevitable that she'll get plenty of fans due her character, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems would be able to make a new Panel De Pon-game featuring her in a starring role, which can be localised without fear of alienating any intended audiences anymore because people are already familiar with her and would want to see her in her origins. The times have quite changed. Substantially.

As of today, nothing has changed since Lip getting a new song in Brawl, despite Sakurai showing off even more Japan-only cult favorites than ever before. However, with the Fighter Ballot being open since last April's start, it's time to bolster further her appeal and many unique ideas she can bring into the roster!

~Basic Moves~
Neutral Attack - Hits three times.
[Hit 1] She swings her (closed) flower rod in front of her. (2%)
[Hit 2] She swings it back. (2%)
[Hit 3] She thrusts it out in front of herself while grunting. This attack has a sweet spot at the tip of the rod, and can launch the opponent. (3% normally, 4% sweetspotted)​
Forward Tilt - She does a high kick. (8%)
Up Tilt - Lip waves her free hand above her head, leaving a small trail of fairy dust. (7%)
Down Tilt - She quickly jumps onto her hands and kicks outwards in both directions, then leaps back to her feet. This move has a bit of lag starting up and ending, but its range is good. (8%)
Forward Smash - Lip twirls her flower rod around in her hands and thrusts it out in front, opening it, while grunting. Clean hits as soon as the rod opens. Deals good knockback. (18-25.2% clean, 14-19.6% late)
Up Smash - She thrusts her flower rod into the air and opens it, causing sparkly fairy dust to emerge. The fairy dust does damage as well. Has slight start-up lag. (12-16.8% rod, 4-5.6% dust)
Down Smash - Lip opens her flower rod and sweeps it around the ground in a full circle. Stands a 20% chance of tripping. (14-19.6% front, 10-14% back)
Neutral Aerial - Lip spins about in midair, holding her flower rod out. Weak, but can hit up to three times. (2% each hit, maximum 6%)
Forward Aerial - Lip does a jab with her flower rod. (7%)
Back Aerial - Lip kicks backwards. (10% sweetspotted, 7% otherwise)
Up Aerial - Opens her flower rod and spins it above her head. Unlike her up smash, the dust doesn't hurt the enemy, but the move hits multiple times, up to five. (3% per hit, maximum 15%)
Down Aerial - Lip drill-kicks downwards. This move has considerable landing lag, as Lip enters a split if she hits the ground using it. It hits up to 4 times, with the final hit capable of meteor smashing. (3% per hit, maximum 12%)
Dash Attack - She flails her wand around adorably yelling "Huuuh-ah!", hiting six times. Only the last hit deals knockback. (1% per hit, maximum 6%)
Edge Attack - Lip flips herself backwards up onto the ledge. (5%)
Floor Attack Face-Up - Lip kicks behind her, thrusts her flower rod in front of her, then climbs to her feet. (6%)
Floor Attack Face-Down - She clambers to her feet, sweeping her hand around her to attack. (5%)
Floor Attack Sitting - Lip very quickly spins her wand around herself as she gets up. (6%)
~Throws~
Pummel - Lip grabs the opponent with her free hand and thwacks them with her wand until released. (2% per hit)
Forward Throw - Lip opens her flower rod and swats the enemy away with a familiar sound effect. (7%, plants a flower)
Back Throw - This throw is similar to Lip's forward throw, except she turns around first. Compared to her forward throw, it's slightly stronger, but has less knockback and KO potential. (9%, plants a flower)
Up Throw - Lip tosses the enemy upward and jabs them with her closed flower rod for the launch. (2% toss, 6% jab, 8% total)
Down Throw - Lip slams the enemy to the ground and bounces off of their prone body to launch them. (5% toss, 4% stomp, 9% total)

~Specials~
Neutral Special
[Default] Lip's Stick - Essentially, this is a stronger, chargable version of the Lip's Stick item. Lip opens her flower rod and begins to swing it above her head from side to side for as long as the button is held. When the button is released, she swings her rod out in front of her. How long the button was held down determines how strongly the move hits and how large the flower planted on the enemy's head is. It takes Lip about four seconds to reach maximum charge. Charge is retained if the move is canceled out of in any way, but not if Lip is hit. (8% uncharged, +2% for every two waves, 18% when fully charged at 10th wave, 20% at sweetspot when fully charged; flower is small at waves 1-4, medium at waves 5-9, large when fully charged)
[Custom 1] Flare's Stick - The attack uses the flame effect instead of planting a flower. It deals more damage, but it takes longer to charge. (10% uncharged, +2 for every two waves, 24% when fully charged at 12th wave, 25% at sweetspot when fully charged)
[Custom 2] Windy's Stick - The attack charges slightly faster (3.25 seconds instead of 4), but does not
deal damage. Instead, it creates a pushing wind effect in front of Lip, the power of which varies depending on how long it was charged for. At zero charge, the wind push is negligible. At maximum charge, it pushes an enemy almost half a Final Destination length. (0%)​

Side Special
[Default] Quick Swap - Lip points and makes a "Hup!" noise as Panel de Pon's in-game cursor appears around her with the appropriate sound effect. After a delay of about half a second, Lip and any fighter or other interactable object that happens to be at the opposite end are switched to the opposite end of the cursor, which disappears. The cursor remains around Lip once summoned until it disappears, and if a fighter or item leaves the cursor's hitbox in any way, it will not be switched. This can be used for horizontal recovery and to thwart edge-guarding attempts, but heavier fighters or items will take more time to switch. (0%)
[Custom 1] Speed Swap - The cursor is twice its length horizontally, enhancing its mobility and recovery abilities. However, it can only switch Lip -- other fighters and items are unaffected. (0%)
[Custom 2] Launching Swap - The cursor, now red, does not switch Lip, or anything else for that matter. It simply appears and then vanishes. Anything standing at the opposite side of the cursor, though, takes damage and is launched a short distance. (6%)​

Up Special
[Default] Watabou - A watabou, the round fluffy cotton creature seen on the title screen of Panel de Pon, appears, with its tail in Lip's free hand. It carries her upwards for a certain time, similarly to Duck Jump, until it reaches its apex, where it will explode and deal damage to anyone nearby. Lip falls down helpless afterwards. If it receives around 10% damage, the watabou will explode instantly. (6%)
[Custom 1] Fairy Duster Watabou - While flying, Lip drops fairy dust that can put small flowers on enemies' heads. As a trade-off, though, the watabou's explosion deals no damage. (0%)
[Custom 2] Chubby Fluff - The watabou is twice its normal size, rises much slower and lower, and can't cover much horizontal ground at all. However, its explosion is larger and fiery. (12%)​

Down Special
[Default] Garbage Block - Lip swipes her wand in front of her. This deals no damage, but it does cause a long pink garbage block to appear in the air above and in front of her, crashing to the ground after about half a second. As an attack it acts essentially as a slightly weaker version of Kirby's Stone, although the move can meteor smash opponents. However, the garbage blocks this attack creates can also be used as temporary platforms. Up to three garbage blocks can be on-screen at a time, with each one fading away on its own after about five seconds. If a garbage block takes 11% or more damage, it will flash and pop away. Garbage blocks stacked on top of or adjacent to each other will all disappear at once if even one is destroyed. (15%)
[Custom 1] Crushing Garbage Block - The garbage black has greatly increased start-up lag, up to 1 1/2 seconds, and it will pop immediately upon hitting a solid object, but it deals considerably more damage. The impact buries ground-bound opponents. (20%)
[Custom 2] Hasty Garbage Block - The garbage blocks drop much quicker, after about 1/4 of a second, and five can be on-screen at once instead of three, but they are half their normal size and give no knockback. Due to their smaller size, they pop out after 9% damage instead of 11%. (5%)​
Final Smash
Panel de Pon (JP)/Puzzle League (Int) - This is similar, but not identical, to the Ice Climbers' Iceberg. A background image of Lip's mother, Cordelia/the Queen, appears as a rainbow overlays the top part of the screen. Lip sticks her flower rod into the air and opens it, shouting "行くぞ!パネルでポン スタート!" ("Here we go! Panel de Pon, start!!") With that, she leaps up onto the rainbow and dashes off, and a large stack of panels rises from the bottom of the screen, remaining on-screen and rising slowly for about 30 seconds. As in Panel de Pon/Puzzle League, the stack is constantly replenished by new panels appearing from below. The size of the stack is proportionate to the size of the stage; larger stages have larger stacks, and so on. Panels remain at a set size, roughly 3/5 of Lip's height.
Instead of controlling Lip, the player controls a cursor for the duration of this Final Smash, using the Left C-Stick or Circle Pad to move the cursor and pressing the neutral attack button to switch two panels. The grab button will raise the stack. As in the Panel de Pon/Puzzle League series, any arrangement of three or more panels will disappear, popping away and slightly damaging any fighters nearby (base 1%, +1% for each additional panel in a combo, +2% for each consecutive chain). The amount of knockback dealt by popping panels varies based on how big the combo or chain was. A default Clear 3 combo has very little knockback, if any at all, whereas a Clear 6 or a x4 Chain will have considerably more launch power and a x10 Chain will rival the Home-Run Bat. The appropriate sound effects and fanfares play throughout the Final Smash. While any amount of damage will pop the panels automatically, the cursor acts as it does in Lip's Side-B and can help to relocate interfering fighters, although it can't leave the horizontal or vertical boundaries of the stack. Dropping a panel onto an enemy's head deals 2% damage with mild knockback.
Every second or so, a varying number of the panels (depending on the size of the stack) on the outer edge of the mountain will flash, an indicator that it is about to activate. A panel is active for about one second and glows brighter while it does so. Any fighter who touches an active panel will suffer an effect relating to its color
  • The red heart panel deals 3% fire damage.
  • The yellow star panel deals 2% electric damage.
  • The green circle panel deals 4% neutral damage and launches.
  • The purple diamond deals 3% darkness damage.
  • The cyan triangle deals 2% damage and freezes.
  • The blue upside-down triangle deals 3% water damage.
  • The gray ! panel deals 2% neutral damage and buries.
If the stack of panels is raised past the top blast line, anyone standing at the very top will be Star KO'd, but the Final Smash will automatically end. Like in the original games, clearing a Combo or Chain when the stack is within two or three panels' worth of the top blast line will cause it to temporarily stop rising as Lip shouts "止まれ!" ("Stop!").
Once the Final Smash timer runs out (unlike in an actual Panel de Pon/Puzzle League game, clearing a Combo or a Chain will not delay the timer) or the top blast line is hit, every panel in the stack will flash and pop simultaneously (4% neutral damage), dealing moderate knockback. A flower drifts gently down to the center of the stage, or near the center if there is a bottomless pit in the middle of the arena, and, once it lands, puffs in a shower of fairy dust to reveal Lip. If the Final Smash ended via time-out, she twirls her flower rod about and poses with it, adding a happy "やったよ!" ("I did it!") If it ended by hitting the upper blast line, she instead slumps in disappointment and sadly says "残念…" ("Too bad...").
~Taunts~
Up Taunt: Lip faces the screen, pumps her fist into the air, and says "yatta!"
Down Taunt: Lip magically produces a flower and smells of it, then sneezes, scattering the petals everywhere. The sneeze has a very small push wind box.
Side Taunt: Lip looks at the back of her skirt and dusts it off.
~Victory Poses~
A: Lip hops up and down three times, saying "Yatta!" on the third leap. She doesn't quite make the landing and trips after her name slides on-screen. She smiles sheepishly at the camera and rubs her bottom throughout the results.
B: Sitting down, Lip creates a large yellow flower underneath herself, which begins to float. On the flower, she twirls her wand in her left hand, throws an open palm outwards with her right, and says "楽しいだったわよ!" ("That was fun!").
C: Lip holds Furifuri the rabbit in her hands and smiles down at him. She spins around with Furifuri and hugs him close, then winks at the camera.

Lip has been around since the 90's, making her definitely more of a veteran than many of the fighters to have joined Smash in Brawl and SSB4. Additionally, Smash has had no Puzzle-game representatives since Dr. Mario back in Melee, meaning she would represent an entire chunk of Nintendo's library on her own. Between her various cameos in other games and frequent nods in Smash (with Lip's Stick and Kirby's "Garbage Block" Stone transformation), she's definitely not obscure to the Nintendo crowd.

Her flower-magic would work well in favor of being a Poisonous Drainer. While she may not be poison herself, many of her spells could easily apply various gradual effects, including fairy dust that plants a flower like the Lip's Stick item, magical seeds that simultaneously hurt the foe while healing her percentage, and command-activated fields of poison ivy. In other words, she is perhaps the only fit for a Poisonous Drainer that isn't pure poison or evil as a character herself.[/quote]

A cute little figure who is one of Nintendo's lesser known characters. But don't let this fool you. She's a powerful fighter whose draining skills are second to none. In her game Panel de Pon the fairies of the world called Popples are put under a spell by the evil Tanatos. The spell causes the fairies to start fighting each other, making it easy for him to take control of the world. Lip is however unaffected, due to her magic wand, the Lip's Stick. She sets out on a mission to return her fairy friends to their senses, and one by one they join her for the confrontation with the evil Tanatos.

How to unlock: Beat Classic mode with Lip.

[collapse="Moveset"]Entrance - A rainbow comes from the other side of the screen. Lip runs down from it, jumps off to the stage and quickly raises her stick, which opens and spreads it's petals, saying "Ikuso!" while looking at the camera.

Fighting Pose - Is standing side-ways, the front part of her facing the screen and her head turned to the right. Her Lip Stick is in one hand and she's holding it forward; slightly diagonally. She kind of sways back and forth while her ponytails swings.

Idle Animation 1 - She slightly giggles while holding her hand in front of her mouth.

Idle Animation 2 - She fluffs her ponytail.


Jump - Lip leaps up into the air in a large skip.

Second Jump - Lip spins horizontally as a few sparkles drop down.

A: Flower Jab - Lip swipes the area in front of her with her Flower Wand vertically once. It doesn't have any start up or landing lag and can form a Jab Combo. Has very low priority and below average reach.

Up Tilt: Twirling Blossom - Lip twirls her Wand above her somewhat playfully. The move does some constant damage. It suffers from little start up and ending lag and can be punished. Dash Attack: Sliding Petal - Lip swings her Wand downward vertically while stopping herself. Has moderate ending lag as she tries to stop herself and can be punished. If performed close to the ledge, the downward strike can meteor strike opponents.

Get Up Attack: Graceful Fairy - Lip gracefully twirls herself back up to her feet, her Wand hitting opponents as she spins around. No start up or ending lag. 100% Get Up Attack: Hot Headed Fairy - Lip ungracefully swipes her Wand on both sides of her as she tries to get back on her feet, it appears her opponent may have made her a bit mad. Slight start up and ending lag as she seems a bit....angry. Despite doing more damage than her Get Up attack, it has slightly less priority. However, it has a great reach and knocks opponents away.

Side Smash: Pollen Power - Lip clutches her Flower Wand with both hands and winds it up with rotations of her wrists, building up a cloud of pollen, then swings it out with all the force she can muster, causing a small pollen explosion as she swings. It has above average reach and has very good priority compared to some other Smash attacks. However, it has a slow start up lag. The move can be sweetspotted at the tip of the pollen blast but anything past that is sourspotted. It has good priority at the mid point of the Pollen-blast that can even cancel out some weak projectiles such as a semi-charged Samus' Charged Shot or Fox's Laser.
[Moderate Damage & Above Moderate Knockback. If the move connects with an opponent, a Flower grows on their head.]

Up Smash: Sunlit Sparkle - Lip raises her Wand upward, it bulbs up and absorbs the sunlight glowing… When the button is released, it explodes in a puff of Pollen and a large Rainbow appears above Lip! The Rainbow is purely cosmetic. Much like her Side Smash, the Up Smash has excellent reach but even more so due to her arm extension. It has a disjointed hit box. However, it will knock opponents upwards when she raises her hand. It has a long start up lag due to the raising of the wand and the blooming of the flower. In addition, much like her Side Smash, it can be sweetspotted at the tip of the Pollen blast but sourspotted anywhere past that or if Lip launches the opponent into the air from the ground. It has good priority but can be canceled out with stronger attacks such as Link's Dair or Yoshi's Down Special. It has the highest amount of priority during the mid point of the Pollen blast animation, much like her Side Smash.

Down Smash: Thorny Roots - Lip waves her Wand, magical pollen falls to the ground… When the button is released, two thorny roots sprout to Lip’s sides! The size and length of these roots vary from the amount of charge, but they will always cause the same amount of damage and knockback. At full charge, Roses blossom atop the roots. Very long start up lag and moderate ending lag. A very punishable move that is not too reliant as a killing move but serves to deal high amounts of damage. However, once the thorny roots shoot up, this protect her on both sides thus protecting her from damage and effectively giving her some super armor. However, she is vulnerable as soon as the thorny roots begin to shrink back into the ground thus the ending lag. It has a several disjointed hitboxes and does above moderate vertical damage. A uncharged Thorny Root produces two roots on either side. A semi charged root produces three roots; two on one side and one on the other. A fully charged Thorny Root produces four roots; two on both sides. Finally, when the pollen shoots upwards and falls to the ground, it has the chance of dealing 1% damage while the opponent is within the field of its effect and has the potential to rack up around 7% damage. It doesn't deal any hitstun so the opponent is easily able to escape.

Neutral Aerial: Pollen Princess - Lip twirls, her Flower Wand emits a mystical pollen that surrounds her. It has a moderate amount of start up lag due to her beginning to twirl. However, the attack hits on both sides. It has several hit boxes. It is a unreliable killing move yet it hitstuns the player thus allowing Lip to continue her rotation; effectively maximizing her damage and poisoning potential. It suffers from landing lag when short-hopped only if in the middle of her rotation. The attack has zero to extremely low priority and one of the lowest for the Nair. However, the attack is notable for allowing the pollen to linger in the air thus dealing damage seconds after Lip has passed by. This is effective when using momentum to spread her damage out while in the middle of a jump.

Forward Aerial: Flower Rotation- Lip rapidly spins her wand in front of her, the spinning petals damages any opponents who come close. It has little ending lag but not any start up lag. It has good enough priority and can be short hopped. It can OHKO at high percentages but only after the final hit. It juggles opponents; effectively trapping them within the spinning momentum. However, due to the low priority and Lip's vulnerability, she can be punished. It has excellent reach and has a disjointed hitbox.
[Below Moderate Damage & Moderate Knockback (After final hit). If the entire move connects to an opponent, a Flower grows on their head.]

Upward Aerial: Rainbow - Lip swipes her wand above her, the wand constructing a rainbow to follow it’s path. Ironically, one of Lip's strongest basic attack. It does have a small amount of lag and the duration of the attack is longer than most. It can be short hopped and it has excellent reach. The attack does the most amount of damage at the start up. If Lip is able to trap the opponent at the start up of the attack, it forces the opponent to follow the rainbow. Once the rainbow ends, it blasts the opponent upwards. It does cause landing lag when short hopped or if in the middle of the animation during the jump. As well, Lip is vulnerable during and after the attack but has a considerable amount of super armor during the rainbow forming animation. The rainbow has excellent priority and one of the best. The attack also slightly boosts Lip into the air.
[High Damage & Moderate Knockback]

Backward Aerial: Feisty Fairy - Lip pulls her legs up and thrusts them both out back, laying flat in the air briefly, before curling up to right herself. If she lands on her front while in the middle of this move, she makes a distinct "Oof!" on landing. While not a worthless move, it is risky due to the vulnerability to attack during and after the attack. The attack has horrible ending and landing lag. After kicking backwards, it takes her around 5-6 seconds before returning to normal. By this time, she is usually close to landing. It has considerable landing lag; especially when short hopped. However, it does a high amoount of damage, knock back, and has considerable reach. The attack has good priority as well. She is much vulnerable from above and below throughout the attack thus making it a risky one to pull off; especially in a group match.

Downward Aerial: Comet Wand - Lip twists in the air to swing her wand below herself. It has zero start up, ending, or landing lag and has an effective attack if not one of her most reliable aerials. It is also an effective killing attack if performed over the stage. It then becomes a meteor strike. It has fairly good reach and decent priority. She is vulnerable above but, as the attack follows a horizontal trajectory, it hits the opponents on both sides as well.
[Moderate Damage, Moderate Knockback, and Spikes Opponents. If the move connects with an opponent, a Flower grows on their head.]


Grab - Lip uses her free hand to grab an opponent. Quick.

Pummel - Lip taps the opponent’s head with her Wand. About the same speed as Marth's pummel.
[Minor Damage & No Knockback. This move causes a flower to grow on the opponent’s head.]

Forward Throw - Lip pushes her opponent forward with both hands, she almost falls over after completing the move. She says "Hya!" as she pushes the opponent. It is a rather quick throw that suffers from ending lag as she falls off balance. The attack knocks opponents forward but it is a rather unreliable at OHKO'ing the opponent.
[Moderate Damage & Moderate Knockback]

Upward Throw - Lip waves her Flower Wand and a gorgeous Flower pops out of the ground from underneath Lip’s opponent, it sends her opponent upwards. It does vertical knock back when thrown upwards. It has a slight ending lag when the flower pops up and throws the opponent upwards. The flower vanishes shortly after the opponent is thrown up. Lip watches slightly as the opponent shoots up. It is a reliable OHKO that can OHKO around 220%.
[Moderate Damage & Moderate Knockback]

Backward Throw - Lip grabs her opponent and jumps over the opponent, spiking the opponent into the ground. It works as a spike and does vertical knock back. It is a very quick yet weak throw. It can be punished as she performs the throw.
[Below Moderate Damage & Moderate Knockback]

Downward Throw - Lip pulls her opponent closer, throws them down and jumps onto them, hopping off of them like off a trampoline. She bounces twice which 2% damage for each jump. Each jump does not do any knockback save for the very last jump where she builds energy in midair and finally slams down. It hits the opponent upwards. It is a rather long throw and longer than her U-Throw. The only problem behind this throw that Lip's throw can be canceled out by another attack. It is reliable as racking up damage as well as knocking up the opponent at the final jump.
[Moderate Damage & Moderate Knockback]


Neutral Special: Panel - Lip takes her wand and uses it to create an arching projectile towards the opponent. Although it will usually be one of the heart Panels from Panel de Pon, sometimes a different panel like a star or circle will appear instead. As mentioned above, if a panel connects with the opponent, the strength of her draining effect will be 50% stronger. Heart Panels will gradually add to their percentage while taking from her own for 5 seconds if it hits an opponent, effectively making it a health-draining move in addition to the 50% damage boost. Other panels will simply cause more damage.
[Minor Damage & Minor Knockback. This move causes a flower to grow on the opponent’s head.]

Side Special: Quick-Swap - Lip quickly forms a ball of sparkles from her wand in front of her that act as a relatively slow moving projectile. If it connects with an opponent, they immediately teleport to where one another was and switch places. The slow speed makes it hard to stall out or camp, but still leaves potential for setting up combos by manipulating the opponent's placement. Perhaps Lip could even score a KO whilst saving herself if Lip risks jumping off the edge while the opponent touches the projectile in a high-risk-high-reward strategy. The quick execution at the start otherwise gives the move utility within close range as something of a counter.
[Minor Damage & No Knockback.]

Up Special: Watabou - Lip takes out her Watabou, a strange fluffy creature that flies off as it pulls Lip up on a string. During this, Lip takes her wand behind her and sprinkles fairy dust below, letting her shower opponents from below with the flower effect. This move does no knockback whatsoever to opponents, but makes a good recovery in that its duration lasts for 3 seconds like Pit's, allowing her to use it vertically or horizontally for great effect.

Down Special: Garbage Block - Lip's strongest move in terms of knockback and a staple finishing move. Lip raises her wand and a cloud appears above her. For a second, the player can control which way the cloud goes horizontally. Afterwards, the cloud dissipates to reveal holding a garbage block, falling down quickly and sending the foe flying should it hit. It's an easy killing move for opponents with high percentages, but is very hard to make use of before the opponent has had a lot of poison damage priorhand.
[Moderate Damage & Moderate Knockback. This move causes a flower to grow on the opponent’s head.]

Final Smash: Panel de Pon - Lip flies off into the air, trailing flower pedals as she does so, before standing on a cloud at the top right part of the screen. UI appears over the screen, showing the setup for a game of Panel de Pon itself. For 10 seconds, the player plays a game of Panel de Pon, where they must clear as many sets of 3 blocks as possible. If the screen fills up completely with panels, then the player loses and the Final Smash fails. However, if 10 seconds are up and the player gets at least one set of 3 blocks cleared, then the Panel de Pon grid disappears and Lip summons a gigantic garbage block, the size being determined by how well the player did during Panel de Pon. Like her down special, Lip gets but a moment to control where the garbage block will fall. When it does fall, it drops very quickly and through the stage and likely KOing an opponent at triple digit percentage due to its high damage output and knockback.

Up Taunt - Lip throws her fist in the air and says "Yatta!" (Might be localised as: "Yeah!")

Side Taunt - Lip takes a flower and smells it. Suddenly she makes a powerful sneeze, blowing off the petals of that poor flower.
[The sneeze can push her opponents, but just a little bit.]

Down Taunt - Lip floats up, while enveloped by a gust that spins around her while carrying petals around.


Losing Pose - Lip sits down and cries.

Victory #1 - Lip hops continuosly while saying Yatta!, but suddenly slips and falls on the ground, sitting. She smiles awkwardly while rubbing her behind and looks at the camera.

Victory #2 - Lip sits on her big yellow flower (as in the menu in Panel de Pon), and sits on it, while saying "Did you have fun?" in Japanese.

Victory #3 - Lip's rabbit runs to her as she grabs it's paws and spins it around once playfully. Lip then holds the rabbit on her lap and winks for the camera.[/collapse][/collapse]

- Overview -

- Lip's primary weapon is her flower magic which utilisizes flowers and other natural plantlife as it's inspiration. For stronger attacks, she uses her stick which plants a flower on her enemies and sap up their power, increasing damage.
Shortly she'll be a mix of Ivysaur and Zelda, except replacing grass powers with flower magic.


-She's very light, considering she's a fairy: in fact, she can actually "hop" on the air three times. This gives her 3 midair jumps.
Unfortunately her lightness makes her easy to juggle and KO in smaller percentages than most of the cast, but the three extra jumps make up for it.


-Along the battle, Lip tends to emit and drop flower petals to the ground, much like Pit losing his feathers. This also happens when she's knocked far away.


Character Animations.

Entrance: A rainbow comes from the other side of the screen. Lip runs down from it, jumps off to the stage and quickly raises her stick, which opens and spreads it's petals, saying "Ikuso!" while looking at the camera. This then switches to her stance animation.

Stance: She rocks her body carefreely, while smiling. Surely, the Smash World isn't a stressful place for a fairy which has competed in her own puzzle game.

Origin: See her sprite in Vs Mode of PDP. This is also referred to her usual stance when you talk to her in Captain Rainbow.

Idle Animations:

1. When some moment has passed, she'll hop up from the ground and starts to float for few seconds.To give you the idea, she's attempting to float like Mewtwo from Melee.

After two seconds when she confidently tries to keep herself on the air, she suddenly loses control and falls down clumsily. Lip quickly gets up back to her usual stance.

Origin: Her floatiness is inspired by how she tends to make funny flips and stances occasionally in Captain Rainbow, somewhat. Also this is in context that she's very light, and can use her magic powers to float herself. Although it seems she's not yet very good at controlling it.

2. Occassionally she'll groom herself, but suddenly she sees how flowers start to grow around her. She crouches down to look at them admiredly, and then gets up.

Special Moves


B: Fairy Seed (Varying Damage and Knockback)

- Lip throws out a colored seed. The seeds come in six colors, red, green, cyan, violet and blue.
If it latches on an opponent, they're "marked", as the seed stays on them. Pressing B again makes her throw another seed, sometimes different-colored. Lip can latch three seeds on her enemies, though the opponent can be shake them off if you rapidly mash the buttons or the shake the control stick.


The catch here though is not to throw seeds on the opponents only. If the opponent is "seeded" and Lip presses B while near him, she starts to bat the opponent tactically with her stick, dealing quick damage. The seed grows by every hit of the stick, in three phases: it starts as a seed, becomes a sprout, then stem, and finally blooms into a flower. By every phase, the damage upon hitting the opponent builds up in strength.
If Lip hits the flower, it explodes, which has decent to semi-high knockback, depending on how many seeds you've planted on your enemy, or the seeds' type.
The more seeds you've planted, the more longer you can continue your attack, Lip grows only one seed at time (shortly it means if you planted two seeds, you can attack six times.)


- Different kind of seeds (and thus flowers) do different kind of status effects while attacking.

1.Green Seed. (Represents Green Circle Block from PDP, appears 40% of the time) No status effect, flower is something ordinary. damage: 2% per hit, no knockback.

2. Yellow Seed (Represents Yellow Star Block from PDP, appears 40% of the time) - Flower might be a daisy or a sunflower? Spark element, 2-3%. per hit.

3. Red Seed (Red Heart Block, appears 30% of the time) Fiery, effect, would be fiery flower, to codify this we might put in a Fire Flower as the growing flower. 4-6% per hit.

4.Purple Seed (Purple Diamond Block, appears 20% of the time) - Dark element, poisons, damage: 8-9 per knockback.
A poisoned, or disturbing-looking flower.

5. Cyan Seed (Cyan Triangle Block, appears 10% of the time), Icy effect, 10%-12% per hit. Enemies are frozen for quick period if the flower is exploded. A shardy flower.

6. Blue Seed (Blue Upside Down Triangle, appears 10% of the time), 13%-15 per hit, fiery explosion occurs if you explode the flower, with a huge knockback.


7.Grey Seed (Represents the !-panels which give a garbage block without needing to combo or chain. appears 10% at time), 13-16% per hit, huge knockback.

Sometimes Lip would throw a black dud seed which absorbs the damage from the stick and doesn't do any damage or knockback. This prevents this special move to be overpowered.

- The effective way to use this is to throw decent amounts of seeds, depending on your skill. You must also press the button quickly to deal the damage and carry the combo to the end.
Why is this is because if you can go on growing the seeds planted on your enemy successfully, your attack builds on power by every hit until the end of the combo. (Think like Fury Cutter from PKMN.)


So, the more seeds = harder it is to execute the combo to the end, but it also deals more damage and knockback than just with one seed.

- When you hit the enemy with a seed on it, a combo marker (from Panel De Pon) shows your current hits as the combo. Say, if you land six hits (by planting two seeds on your enemy), you get a 6x chain combo with a fanfare.

Origin: I had to think a for a long time until I came up with an unique way to give her a great alternative that translates the combo system of Panel De Pon, while keeping her incharacter and making use of her powers. This took me sometime to write out thoughtfully.

The mechanic of growing each seed in succession is again based on chain system used in Puzzle League: in order to chain, you had to first connect three tiles as usual, then arrange quickly three another same tiles in quick succession to create a chain:

This is present in this special by the technique of trying to grow each seed in quick succession,which builds up the attacks' power.

Also, the skill plays a great role here: the more seeds you have used on the opponent, the more it's easier for them to drop, but it's more rewarding to carry the combo to the end, as the move builds in power everytime you hit your enemies, and if really carried on to the end, can do considerately high damage and knockback: this references on the hard aspect of "skillchaining" which is a technique where you skillfully keep chaining on and on in Puzzle League, which becomes very rewarding at the end:

(BTW, The rule of chaining a lot and mastering it applies to many puzzle games out there, too. Look at Puyo Puyo for example.)

The fanfare of course comes from the Puzzle League-series in general: when you pull off 3x chain in Puzzle League, you're met with a congratulating fanfare, that gets more applauding if you chain longer. This time in SSB4, Lip gets this fanfare only if she successfully grows two seeds or more.

Kirby Hat: Kirby gains Lip's ponytail, complete with the pink ribbon! He gains the ability to use Fairy Seeds and also can make them grow with his replica of Lip's Stick.

Side B: Quick Swap (8%, electric horizontal knockback.)

- Lip waves her wand forwards: suddenly, a glowing, luminent- lines shaped like the "cursor" from Puzzle League-games appears around Lip- also the another side of it appears in front of her. Lip then pulls her stick back while holding it with both of her hands, which makes the cursor swap the position of Lip and her target at her front lightning fast. Lip also goes through people with this move, which deals some damage and electric stun knockback.

- This can be used on one opponent or projectiles. This is quite an unique dodge maneuver technique for Lip, as you can move your opponents behind you, and even dodge projectiles this way. For example, if you see a Bob-Omb being thrown at you, you dodge it by letting it swap places with Lip and then continue it's direction. Lip can't get hit by projectiles because how cursor makes her temporarily invicible for the moment of swapping, which renders her very fast.

- If Quick Swap is used on a barrel, crate, Wario Bike or similar heavy items, Lip has little lag (as she pulls it with laboured expression her face.), and can't attack with it.

- There's also one minor mechanic implemented on this: as Lip can catch an opponent or an item, and switch places with him/it, or she can pull of few advanced techniques:

Passing The Bad Baton: If you've been just being thrown out of the stage, but you're making it near the edge to grab on, you might expect your opponent be there "edgeguarding" it, right?

If you time it right and use Quick Swap successfully right near your enemy, you'll swap the places with your opponent, which enables you to reach the ground successfully, being at your enemy's former place, while your opponent take your role as the one falling down on the stage, taking damage and some knockback which blows them farther away after the swap-- if they're just using an attack them makes them helpless, good for you, as they're rendered numb in midair after. Watch them plummet to their doom.

Drop The Tile: Also, when you're on an object ignoring gravity, for example, a floating platfom, you can tactically drop a dangerous item behind you by Quick Swapping it to make it hit opponents below you. This though is trickier to pull off, depending on the stage, and the items themselves- which is why it's more of a minor technique. An ideal items to pull this is a Smart Bomb, or a Crate. This technique is loosely based on the mechanic of being able to drop tiles in Panel De Pon:http://i.imgur.com/9oaAp.png

Dropping the tiles have also translated for this move, albeit minorly as dropping enemies of the edge like in Yoshi's Egg Lay, albeit it doesn't paralyze them, or using the above mentioned "Drop The Tile"-technique.

Up B: Watabou (12% Damage, Medium Knockback.)

- The floating, fluffy balloon-like creature in which Lip is holding on in title screen for Panel de Pon appears to aid Lip. When you press Up-B, Watabou appears from underneath of Lip and catches a breeze, which makes it float up. Lip quickly grabs it's tail and holds into it, while drifting upward signifantly.

- Watabou though can't carry Lip long: it acts like a cotton flower, which is first taken with a windy breeze, then losing it after a moment, so it has to descend on the ground. Lip can hold into it while descending down, but after a while when Watabou loses the breeze, it will become heavier and starts to fall down with Lip.

When used on the ground, Lip jumps up and does the same, but the enemies near her are damaged by Watabou rapidly (like in Peach's Parasol) and at the top height of attack's range, the creature explodes into fluff of cotton! This deals 12% and decent knockback.
(This is intended to refer at Dr.Mario's Super Jump Punch.)


Origin: As mentioned above, Watabou appears at title screen for Panel De Pon. I took a cue from Floaty Fluffs from Super Mario Galaxy and made it like a huge cotton flower for Lip to glide on.

Down B: Garbage Block. (16 - 27% Damage, Medium-High Horizontal Knockback)

- This is a chargaeble attack. Lip spins her wand around as it builds in magical power (which can be charged 4 seconds), and when you release the button, she shouts "Ikuso! while pointing her stick to the sky.
Suddenly, a pink, smiling garbage block decorated with floral patterns will rain down on front of her. Lip takes a second to do this attack and then become controllable again. Using this attack in the air renders Lip helpless.


- These will deal up to 15, to 27% damage, depending how long you've charged your garbage block. Lip can charge for 5 seconds, but is open to attack.
Garbage Blocks are great for stalling, but their best use comes from edgeguarding, as the Garbage Blocks (naturally) can meteor smash opponents if they're in midair.


- A regular, small block does 15% damage. However, the more you charge your attack, the more bigger garbage blocks you can summon, even up to five platforms high. 1 time of 15, Lip can get lucky and summon some extra junk blocks after the one she's charged attack on, which are regular, uncharged ones.

- When a garbage block has landed on the ground, it act can be picked up and thrown to act as an additional platform. Depending on it's size it gets heavier and more difficult to throw it up, if even pick it up at all. Lip can have only two of these garbage blocks on the ground. These are breakable like the platforms in Skyworld-stage in Brawl. The regular junk blocks have the same damage meter needed to be depleted to break them, but their durability increases in their size.

Origin: Puzzle League-series of course pit you use combos and chains to make garbage drop on your opponent. The more combo's you scored, the more wider your block became. The more you scored chains, it started to get layers and grow bigger:

Lip's garbage blocks will borrow her original design for them, which was referenced by Kirby's Stone-move in SSBM/SSBB.


Final Smash: Walk On Rainbow (Varying Damage of 10-80%, No Knockback)

" Before you read, I hugely recommend that you take a look at the origin of this move below, so you'll understand more how this move works like."

After you break the Smash Ball, the stage's background gets little cloudy- Suddenly, a huge feminine figure emerges in the same style as Palutena in Pit's Final Smash.

That's Lip's mother, Cordelia- She makes the stage much sunnier, while there's some drippling rain coming down. As the clouds go away, Lip looks delightedly up the sky. A rainbow slowly starts appear above her, (about a width of that of Battlefield) which is above the stage. She'll then run on top of it. This scenario takes though 3 seconds (Kinda like how Pit's Final Smash begins)

Now you get a another screen which lets you play Puzzle League! Score combos and chains by swapping the tiles and making same tiles connect with each other. As you score combos and chains like usually in Puzzle League-games, you build up Lip's power to her wand.

After 10-second play, the screen disappears, and Lip will unleash a huge flower spell that spreads across the stage. The effectiveness of the Final Smash is based on your skill: the range and the amount of flowers, the durability of the flowers on enemies' heads, and how rapidly they increase their damage meter.

Along with it Lip fills the stage in flowers of all kind as a temporary decoration (similar to how Mario Final leaves some flickering flare on ground after travelling along it.)-- The flowers though aren't there as temporary decoration: it seemingly slows down the characters. Thus, when Lip falls down from the rainbow after it poofs off at the end of the Final Smash, she can go knock her slowly-moving opponents out.

Tips Regarding The Final Smash

- To give this move a catch so it will not be overpowered, her attack isn't very effective if it's used on the ground, because the range of flower spell will be quite small, even if you score very well done chains and combos. Lip also can be hit during the time when she tries to pull of her final smash on the rainbow, and if hit enough times (depending on her damage), she'll flinch and loses control.

This is why you need to activate the Final Smash while being as high above the stage as you can: Lip's flower spell gets more range the more she's above the ground, and opponents also can't hit you so easily.

- While the enemies. enemies can also avoid being trapped in the huge flowerbed by staying airborne, but still, there's the flowers they have to remove. At the end, as mentioned above, the more well you do in scoring and make sure you use the final smash as high as you can above the stage, the more harder is for your opponents to avoid it and it's effects.

- As mentioned above, this move gets more effective and is very suited for you if you have played Puzzle League before, and are familiar with comboing and chaining.
How then, you ask?


As seen in Puzzle League/Panel De Pon in general, you don't though get very high score by just making three tiles connect together all the time: the combo's and more importantly, chains, give more points to add on your score than just regular tile connecting. So try to learn comboing and chaining, to really makes this Final Smash a killer. I recommend learning to skillchain, because that might really make your score get huge.

Thus, as you can see, Walk On The Rainbow's power depends on your skill, which is in context with Puzzle League's underlying competitive manner.


Origin: When browsing internet about what Lip was suggested to have as her Final Smash, I was dumbfounded by the fact that everyone thinks her final smash should consist her using panels and junk block to attack her opponent.
But of course, back in that time, I didn't any better clue as well, since I didn't anything that would be more incharacter to her.


Long time after, I started to watch a walkthrough of Captain Rainbow.
As the game's theme was to to help Nintendo's forgotten characters, there were one to two main missions to help them.(Lip had two missions)
In second mission where Nick regained his powers to create a rainbow above him, he had to help Lip on her second mission: at near end of it, he made out a huge rainbow for her. Lip ran on it, and then, she pulled of the same flower spell all over Mimin Island, filling many places in flowers.

This kind of magic spell as her final smash is more incharacter for her, besides Lip has always ran on rainbows during PDP: this has been referred on Captain Rainbow where she has a drawing on her room depicting herself on a rainbow. She also ran on a rainbow end credits of Panel De Pon. (Of course, Yoshi followed the suit

Shortly this Final Smash describes her love for rainbows and her powers a Flower Fairy. Also the mechanic is of Final Smash has been centered playing of Puzzle League/Panel De Pon successfully, to let Puzzle League-fans give out their best of their skill when they use it.

Up Taunt: Lip throws her fist in the air and says "Yatta!" (Might be localised as: "Yeah!" )

Origin: Refers to her sprite from her stage in PDP when in one-player. She would always say ”Yatta!” when winning in the game, be it VS mode, 1P mode, etc.

Side Taunt: Lip takes a flower and smells it. Suddenly she makes a powerful sneeze, blowing off the petals of that poor flower.
The sneeze can push her opponents, but just a little bit.


Origin: According to Captain Rainbow she has developed an allergy for flowers, which Nick can help cure by getting her a medicine from Crazy Tracy's mansion.
The taunt also her humorous, seeing as she's ironically a "Fairy of Flowers".

Down Taunt: Lip floats up, while enveloped by a gust that spins around her while carrying petals around.

Origin: Might be inspired by Lip's backdrop art from PDP which also had petals flying around her.

Victory Poses

1. Lip hops continuosly while saying Yatta!, but suddenly slips and falls on the ground, sitting. She smiles awkwardly while rubbing her behind and looks at the camera.

Origin: In Score Attack, when you get to last stage which features Thanatos, Lip had to use her powers to defeat him. When Lip gains victory, she'd hop happily and continuosly, while Thanatos plummets (somewhere) on his doom.

The clumsiness is just there to make sure it's not a copy of Ice Climbers' Up Taunt in Brawl and one of their victory poses. Besides, it'll look quite cute.

2. Lip sits on her big yellow flower (as in the menu in Panel de Pon), and sits on it, while saying "Did you have fun?" in japanese.

3. Lip's rabbit runs to her as she grabs it's paws and spins it around once playfully. Lip then holds the rabbit on her lap and winks for the camera.

Origin: Lip has a rabbit on her stage in single player mode for Panel De Pon (Endless, Time Attack, Puzzle, etc)

Lose Pose: Lip's sitting on the ground, looking sad while she looks to the grounded gloomily. In a common tradition for Puzzle League-series having characters, a panel occassionally drops on her.

Also, the tradition of dropping panels on the player in game over has occurred for Yoshi in Tetris Attack, and Ash in PKMN Puzzle League- This is kept intact for Lip in her losing pose.

- Lip pulls out her stick, turning it into a giant blowball while jumping into the air, and slowly glides umbrella-esque down. This move does no damage.
B down:Garbage Block
- Lip calls down a small garbage block from the air. Lip stops wherever she is (she is also not floating down in midair) until the block is coming down. This means she can cover areas with these blocks, however only with time windows in between. The block itself lands and breaks on the first obstacle it hits, and does pretty much the same knockback as Kirby's Stone move, though its flaw is that it's not coming out as fast as Stone. Damage: 18%

Note: Generally Lip's throws are pretty weak in sending the enemies fly - I spare myself typing that at every throw.

Tetris Attack

Lip exclaims "Ikuso, Panerus!" and jumps in the air. Suddenly a wall of Panels raises from the ground (see Iceberg). If the enemy touches a green panel, they'll get flowered, at a purple panel, they'll get poisoned, red ones explode when they're touched and cyan ones freeze them. The "used" panel turns into a blank one and disappears after a while. You can only stay unharmed when you're placed on a yellow panel. Garbage Blocks randomly fall from above, too. Lip is not affected by any of the panel effects or blocks, whatsoever.
The Final Smash is finished with the panels going down, leaving the stage as it was, and Cordelia, the final boss of Panel de Pon, appears in the background, and blows a comet onto the center of the stage, which explodes an a not too big burst. After this, Lip appears again where she was standing.

Role in Subspace Emissary
Lip's role is rather small. In the part of the story where Olimar gets attacked by the giant ROB, Lip wants to save him and his Pikmin, however is interrupted by Captain Falcon's attack. At the end of that cutscene, after Falcon sled through Olimar's Pikmin, she stands along with Olimar and the Red Pikmin. She's playable in that sub-storyline from then on.

[collapse=ChronoBound's Moveset]Lip is a character who uses a disjointed hitbox as her primary means of attack. Swords and hammers have generally been the only disjointed hitbox weapons in the Smash series. The Lip’s Stick offers a variety of new attacks because its properties differ from that of a sword or a hammer. The stick will be twirled and spinned a lot, as opposed to slashing, stabbing, and clobbering that is associated with swords and hammers. Also, while the flower sprouting from an opponent’s head is a famous attribute of Lip’s Stick thanks to the Smash Bros. series, it never actually happened in the Panel de Pon games. However, since this attribute has become famous due to the Smash series, I have decided to incorporate it with the moveset, though the flower sprouting only happens when Lip does a smash-a attack.

However, there is more Lip’s moveset than the use of Lip’s Stick. Obviously, when you attack your opponents in Puzzle League, you use something called “Garbage Blocks”. Expect “Garbage Blocks” and a regular Panels to make up a bulk of Lip’s special moves and Final Smash. However, some new original attributes will be given to Lip’s moveset as have been for other characters for the Smash roster. I am really hoping to make Lip a very interesting character addition.

Lip regular moves:
A: Lip smacks her opponent with the flower-baton.
AA: Lip smacks her opponent again with the flower-baton.
AAA: Lip twirls the flower-baton continuously.
Running-A: Lip does a forward flip, and opponents are harmed if they come into contact with her while she is doing the flip.
Side-A: Lip twirls the flower-baton in front of her, this move can also deflect projectile attacks (but not reflect).
Down-A: Lip does a double-roundhouse kick (meaning she roundhouse kicks with both of her legs, she stands on her hands while doing it)
Up-A: Lip jumps up and spins with her flower-baton raised up high.
A-Air: Lip spins around and smacks any nearby opponents with the flower-baton.
Forward-air: Lip somersaults in the air with the flower-baton.
Backward-air: Lip smacks in back of her with the flower-baton.
Up-Air: This move does not damage, it simply make the petals to the flower-baton grow in size until it is like a parasol and makes Lip fall down slowly.
Forward-Smash: Lip smacks her opponent with the flower-baton two times, before doing one final smack in which she jumps up ands smacks her opponent with baton. Depending on how long you charged up the smash attack, a flower of corresponding size will sprout on the head of the opponent you attacked.
Down-Smash: Lip spins on one foot multiple times. This moves does not knock your opponent back, it instead traps them, inside the whirling attack where they will be hit by the flower-baton multiple times which will make a larger flower grow on your opponent’s head with each consecutive hit.
Up-Smash: Lip will do a flip into the air, and somersault while in the air (any opponents who get hit while Lip is somersaulting down will be get hit multiple times with the flower-baton, which will result in a large flower sprouting from the opponent’s head). If you hit A, before she hits the ground, she will block her fall by doing a leaping handstand in which she repeats the Up-Smash over again. While this can result in a lot of damage, however, there is a bit of lag time after the second leap, which will make yourself vulnerable to attack.


Grabs:
Grab-A: Lip hits her grabbed opponent with the flower-baton.
Forward-Grab: Lip smacks her opponent forward with the flower-baton.
Backward-Grab: Lip kicks her opponent to the back of her (very weak).
Down-Grab: Lip smacks her opponent downward with the flower-baton.
Up-Grab: Lip will toss her opponent up (again it is a weak throw).



Lip special moves:

Regular-B: Junk Block: Lip’s flower-baton will glow and she will throw it a bit into the air, and then a junk block will appear over a nearby opponent’s head and land. A regular junk-block does 15% damage. However, Lip can summon bigger, and even multiple junk blocks as she gets more damaged.

Down-B: Petal Barrier: Lip will use the flower-baton in front of her, and the petals to it will temporarily grow. It will appear that Lip is using the flower-baton as a protective parasol. If opponent attacks her while in the stance, the flower-baton will shoot out seeds which will cause a flower to sprout on the attacking opponent’s head (the size of the flower though depends on how powerful the attempted move was going to be).

Side-B: Panel Toss: Lip tosses a random panel from the Puzzle League series at her opponents. The power and effect of the panel depends upon the symbol. Triangles do 10% damage but have a shocking effect to them and little more knock back. Hearts do 15% damage, and have a fire effect to them, but have less knockback than the triangle panels. Circles do 15% damage, but have no knockback. Star panels do 20% damage but have no knockback. Exclamation blocks are the rarest but getting hit by one does 40% damage, and result in a KO if your opponent has more than 50% damage done to him or her. If you get three of the same type of panel in a row, your opponent will get instantly KO’d, though this circumstance only has a 10% chance of happening.

Up-B: Watabou: The floating balloon-like creature in which Lip is holding onto on the Panel de Pon title screen. Lip will hold onto Watabou's string for a while, and then eventually let go of it (think Snake's recovery move)

Final Smash: Combos and Chains: The combo and chain fanfare plays, and Lip will spin her flower-baton around quickly like she does when she does a combo or chain in Panel de Pon. Lots and lots of junk blocks fall all across the arena. It is quite likely that your opponents will be KO’d if the arena happens to be small, and your opponents are not proficient at dodging.

Lip’s taunts are as follows:
1. Lip will spin around and wink at the screen, and giggle a bit.
2. Lip will throw the flower-baton up in the air, and make a ^_^ expression.
3. Lip will sit down, and then a ring of flowers will grow around her, when she gets back up the flowers disappear.


Lip’s victory animations are as follows:
1. Lip will do some flips and laugh with happiness.
2. Lip will be sitting down and have a whole bunch of flowers around her, and she will appear to be dowsing off.
3. Lip will stretch and then wink at the camera, and spin the flower-baton.


Running animation:
Lip will sort of have skipping aspect to her running animation, however, she has a determined “I must win this” cute look on her face while doing so.


Idle animation:
Lip will either be twirling the flower-baton or throwing it up in the air a bit. She will also hop a bit in place, all the while smiling (while sometimes her smile will turn to an arrogant smirk). Truly, Smash is not a stressful place for Lip.


Costumes:
1. Lip’s dress will be blue.
2. Lip’s dress will be green.
3. Lip’s dress be white.
4. Lip’s dress will be red.
5. Lip’s dress black and she will have white hair and red eyes (creepy).


Kirby Hat:
Kirby will gain Lip’s hairstyle upon absorbing her. He will also gain Junk-Block special move, however, the attributes about the move related to damage will not be carried over to Kirby.


Lip-Snake Codec Conversation:
Snake: Uh, colonel there looks to be some cute-looking girl with a flower stick as my opponent.
Campbell: Careful Snake, your opponent is Lip, the fairy of flowers.
Snake: *laughs*
Campbell: What’s so funny?
Snake: How do you expect me to fight a flower fairy, she is just a defenseless girl.
Campbell: Snake, that flower-baton she uses has a strange power. It can makes a vampiric flower sprout from the heads of the opponent’s she hits it with. If this flower is not removed, it slowly drains the life energy of its opponents.
Snake: Whaaaaat?! You got to be kidding me colonel. A cute girl like that would not harm even a bug.
Campbell: Not only that, she has ability to summon massive heavy blocks above the heads of her opponents which she uses to devastate and eliminate them, as well, as throw these mystical objects called panels. There seems to be a correlation between the symbol on them and their power, and I will say avoid the ones that have exclamation points on them at all costs.
Snake: This is the most absurd thing I ever heard, I think you are describing someone else to me.
Campbell: Snake remember, not everything is what it seems in Smash Bros. Things that would go against common sense and logic are the norm here. Lip is not an opponent you should underestimate, she has uncanny determination and power. Please don’t let her outward appearance fool you.
Snake: *sigh* I guess you are right, everything here is bizarre, would it be so hard to ask for a normal opponent in Smash Bros.

Being Lip's biggest fan, yes. I believe she'll be given some appearance in Smash. I can hope for Assist Trophy-appearance. But even better, a playable spot. (-=<>=-);

She was one of the 5 "3DS 'Exclusive' characters" I had in mind that wouldn't play a role in the WiiU game's story, but could be "ported" into the game from the 3DS.

Along with Roy, Mewtwo, Kamek, and Vaati, I think.

I looked up the Panel De Pon game today, I didnt have any Idea what to expect.
I wasn't expecting it to be just like Pokemon Puzzle League.
LOL Pokemon Puzzle League totally ripped that game off! (Actually they did it better)
The music in Pokemon Puzzle league was way catchier. Softcore remixes of all the PokeRaps and theme songs from original to Jhoto.

Kirby has not always transformed into a garbage block. The first instance of it (if there is one outside of smash) could possibly be Kirby Superstar, where he had several stone transformations.

Bio:
From Nintendo's long-running puzzle series Panel De Pon, known as Puzzle League outside of Japan, Lip is Fairy Of Flowers, who appears to be the main mascot of the series.

Back in the peaceful days when she lived in her homeland Popples, the Devil King Thanatos had casted a spell all over the Popples's kingdom, affecting the residents of the land and causing fighting amongst the fairies. Lip was luckily unaffected due to her magic stick.
Lip then had to defeat each of her fairy friends to return their personalities to normal, by facing off them in fairies' favorite game called Panepon. After breaking every spell from her friends, she proceeded to face off against Thanatos.

Lip hasn't much appeared these days aside from things referring to her in SSB but she made a secret appearance in Planet Puzzle League. Recently she's also been found having developed role in Skip's action adventure game Captain Rainbow.

Personality-wise she's optimistic and little tomboyish: she has very good confidence on herself. This might be little problematic for her: despite her confidence she's not sure of herself and her destiny as a new queen. As seen from her appearances The Fairy Of Flowers has a lot of charm.

- Overview -


- Lip's primary weapon is her flower magic which utilisizes flowers and other natural plantlife as it's inspiration. For stronger attacks, she uses her stick which plants a flower on her enemies and sap up their power, increasing damage.
Shortly she'll be a mix of Ivysaur and Zelda, except replacing grass powers with flower magic.

-She's very light, considering she's a fairy: in fact, she can actually "hop" on the air three times. This gives her 3 midair jumps.
Unfortunately her lightness makes her easy to juggle and KO in smaller percentages than most of the cast, but the three extra jumps make up for it.

-Along the battle, Lip tends to emit and drop flower petals to the ground, much like Pit losing his feathers. This also happens when she's knocked far away.


Character Animations.


Entrance
:
A rainbow comes from the other side of the screen. Lip runs down from it, jumps off to the stage and quickly raises her stick, which opens and spreads it's petals, saying "Ikuso!" while looking at the camera. This then switches to her stance animation.

Origin
: Rainbows were her main means of transportation in Panel De Pon, so this is spot-on for her as an entrance. See here:

Stance
: She rocks her body carefreely, while smiling. Surely, the Smash World isn't a stressful place for a fairy which has competed in her own puzzle game.

Origin
: See her sprite in Vs Mode of PDP. This is also referred to her usual stance when you talk to her in Captain Rainbow.

Idle Animations
:

1.
When some moment has passed, she'll hop up from the ground and starts to float for few seconds.To give you the idea, she's attempting to float like Mewtwo from Melee.

After two seconds when she confidently tries to keep herself on the air, she suddenly loses control and falls down clumsily. Lip quickly gets up back to her usual stance.

Origin
: Her floatiness is inspired by how she tends to make funny flips and stances occasionally in Captain Rainbow, somewhat. Also this is in context that she's very light, and can use her magic powers to float herself. Although it seems she's not yet very good at controlling it.

2.
Occassionally she'll groom herself, but suddenly she sees how flowers start to grow around her. She crouches down to look at them admiredly, and then gets up.

Special Moves

Fairy Seed
(
Varying Damage and Knockback
)

- Lip throws out a colored seed. The seeds come in six colors, red, green, cyan, violet and blue.
If it latches on an opponent, they're "marked", as the seed stays on them. Pressing B again makes her throw another seed, sometimes different-colored. Lip can latch three seeds on her enemies, though the opponent can be shake them off if you rapidly mash the buttons or the shake the control stick.

The catch here though is not to throw seeds on the opponents only. If the opponent is "seeded" and Lip presses B while near him, she starts to bat the opponent tactically with her stick, dealing quick damage. The seed grows by every hit of the stick, in three phases: it starts as a seed, becomes a sprout, then stem, and finally blooms into a flower. By every phase, the damage upon hitting the opponent builds up in strength.
If Lip hits the flower, it explodes, which has decent to semi-high knockback, depending on how many seeds you've planted on your enemy, or the seeds' type.
The more seeds you've planted, the more longer you can continue your attack, Lip grows only one seed at time (shortly it means if you planted two seeds, you can attack six times.)

- Different kind of seeds (and thus flowers) do different kind of status effects while attacking.

1.Green Seed. (Represents Green Circle Block from PDP, appears 40% of the time) No status effect, flower is something ordinary. damage: 2% per hit, no knockback.


2. Yellow Seed (Represents Yellow Star Block from PDP, appears 40% of the time) - Flower might be a daisy or a sunflower? Spark element, 2-3%. per hit.


3. Red Seed (Red Heart Block, appears 30% of the time) Fiery, effect, would be fiery flower, to codify this we might put in a Fire Flower as the growing flower. 4-6% per hit.


4.Purple Seed (Purple Diamond Block, appears 20% of the time) - Dark element, poisons, damage: 8-9 per knockback.
A poisoned, or disturbing-looking flower.


5. Cyan Seed (Cyan Triangle Block, appears 10% of the time), Icy effect, 10%-12% per hit. Enemies are frozen for quick period if the flower is exploded. A shardy flower.


6. Blue Seed (Blue Upside Down Triangle, appears 10% of the time), 13%-15 per hit, fiery explosion occurs if you explode the flower, with a huge knockback.


7.Grey Seed (Represents the !-panels which give a garbage block without needing to combo or chain. appears 10% at time), 13-16% per hit, huge knockback.


Sometimes Lip would throw a black dud seed which absorbs the damage from the stick and doesn't do any damage or knockback. This prevents this special move to be overpowered.

- The effective way to use this is to throw decent amounts of seeds, depending on your skill. You must also press the button quickly to deal the damage and carry the combo to the end.
Why is this is because if you can go on growing the seeds planted on your enemy successfully, your attack builds on power by every hit until the end of the combo. (Think like
Fury Cutter
from
PKMN
.)

So, the more seeds = harder it is to execute the combo to the end, but it also deals more damage and knockback than just with one seed.

- When you hit the enemy with a seed on it, a combo marker (from Panel De Pon) shows your current hits as the combo. Say, if you land six hits (by planting two seeds on your enemy), you get a 6x chain combo with a fanfare.

: I had to think a for a long time until I came up with an unique way to give her a great alternative that translates the combo system of Panel De Pon, while keeping her incharacter and making use of her powers. This took me sometime to write out thoughtfully.

The seeds represent the tiles used in Puzzle League and the method hitting the seed three times until it explodes is a translated from the mechanic making three same tiles to connect:

, you had to first connect three tiles as usual, then arrange quickly three another same tiles in quick succession to create a chain:

This is present in this special by the technique of trying to grow each seed in quick succession,which builds up the attacks' power.

Also, the skill plays a great role here: the more seeds you have used on the opponent, the more it's easier for them to drop, but it's more rewarding to carry the combo to the end, as the move builds in power everytime you hit your enemies, and if really carried on to the end, can do considerately high damage and knockback: this references on the hard aspect of "
skillchaining
" which is a technique where you skillfully keep chaining on and on in Puzzle League, which becomes very rewarding at the end:

The fanfare of course comes from the Puzzle League-series in general: when you pull off 3x chain in Puzzle League, you're met with a congratulating fanfare, that gets more applauding if you chain longer. This time in SSB4, Lip gets this fanfare only if she successfully grows two seeds or more.

Kirby Hat
: Kirby gains Lip's ponytail, complete with the pink ribbon! He gains the ability to use Fairy Seeds and also can make them grow with his replica of Lip's Stick.

Quick Swap

- Lip waves her wand forwards: suddenly, a glowing, luminent- lines shaped like the "cursor" from Puzzle League-games appears around Lip- also the another side of it appears in front of her. Lip then pulls her stick back while holding it with both of her hands, which makes the cursor swap the position of Lip and her target at her front lightning fast. Lip also goes through people with this move, which deals some damage and electric stun knockback.

- This can be used on one opponent or projectiles. This is quite an unique dodge maneuver technique for Lip, as you can move your opponents behind you, and even dodge projectiles this way. For example, if you see a Bob-Omb being thrown at you, you dodge it by letting it swap places with Lip and then continue it's direction. Lip can't get hit by projectiles because how cursor makes her temporarily invicible for the moment of swapping, which renders her very fast.

- If
Quick Swap
is used on a barrel, crate, Wario Bike or similar heavy items, Lip has little lag (as she pulls it with laboured expression her face.), and can't attack with it.

- There's also one minor mechanic implemented on this: as Lip can catch an opponent or an item, and switch places with him/it, or she can pull of few advanced techniques:

Passing The Bad Baton
: If you've been just being thrown out of the stage, but you're making it near the edge to grab on, you might expect your opponent be there "edgeguarding" it, right?

If you time it right and use
Quick Swap
successfully right near your enemy, you'll swap the places with your opponent, which enables you to reach the ground successfully, being at your enemy's former place, while your opponent take your role as the one falling down on the stage, taking damage and some knockback which blows them farther away after the swap-- if they're just using an attack them makes them helpless, good for you, as they're rendered numb in midair after. Watch them plummet to their doom.

Drop The Tile
: Also, when you're on an object ignoring gravity, for example, a floating platfom, you can tactically drop a dangerous item behind you by Quick Swapping it to make it hit opponents below you. This though is trickier to pull off, depending on the stage, and the items themselves- which is why it's more of a minor technique. An ideal items to pull this is a Smart Bomb, or a Crate. This technique is loosely based on the mechanic of being able to drop tiles in Panel De Pon:

Dropping the tiles have also translated for this move, albeit minorly as dropping enemies of the edge like in Yoshi's Egg Lay, albeit it doesn't paralyze them, or using the above mentioned "Drop The Tile"-technique.

- The floating, fluffy balloon-like creature in which Lip is holding on in title screen for Panel de Pon appears to aid Lip. When you press Up-B, Watabou appears from underneath of Lip and catches a breeze, which makes it float up. Lip quickly grabs it's tail and holds into it, while drifting upward signifantly.

Watabou
though can't carry Lip long: it acts like a cotton flower, which is first taken with a windy breeze, then losing it after a moment, so it has to descend on the ground. Lip can hold into it while descending down, but after a while when Watabou loses the breeze, it will become heavier and starts to fall down with Lip.

When used on the ground, Lip jumps up and does the same, but the enemies near her are damaged by
Watabou
rapidly (like in Peach's Parasol) and at the top height of attack's range, the creature explodes into fluff of cotton! This deals 12% and decent knockback.
(This is intended to refer at Dr.Mario's Super Jump Punch.)

Origin
: As mentioned above, Watabou appears at title screen for Panel De Pon. I took a cue from Floaty Fluffs from Super Mario Galaxy and made it like a huge cotton flower for Lip to glide on.

- This is a chargaeble attack. Lip spins her wand around as it builds in magical power (which can be charged 4 seconds), and when you release the button, she shouts "Ikuso! while pointing her stick to the sky.
Suddenly, a pink, smiling garbage block decorated with floral patterns will rain down on front of her. Lip takes a second to do this attack and then become controllable again. Using this attack in the air renders Lip helpless.

- These will deal up to 15, to 27% damage, depending how long you've charged your garbage block. Lip can charge for 5 seconds, but is open to attack.
Garbage Blocks are great for stalling, but their best use comes from edgeguarding, as the Garbage Blocks (naturally) can meteor smash opponents if they're in midair.

- A regular, small block does 15% damage. However, the more you charge your attack, the more bigger garbage blocks you can summon, even up to five platforms high. 1 time of 15, Lip can get lucky and summon some extra junk blocks after the one she's charged attack on, which are regular, uncharged ones.

- When a garbage block has landed on the ground, it act can be picked up and thrown to act as an additional platform. Depending on it's size it gets heavier and more difficult to throw it up, if even pick it up at all. Lip can have only two of these garbage blocks on the ground. These are breakable like the platforms in Skyworld-stage in Brawl. The regular junk blocks have the same damage meter needed to be depleted to break them, but their durability increases in their size.

Origin
: Puzzle League-series of course pit you use combos and chains to make garbage drop on your opponent. The more combo's you scored, the more wider your block became. The more you scored chains, it started to get layers and grow bigger:

" Before you read, I hugely recommend that you take a look at the origin of this move below, so you'll understand more how this move works like."

After you break the Smash Ball, the stage's background gets little cloudy- Suddenly, a huge feminine figure emerges in the same style as Palutena in Pit's Final Smash.

That's Lip's mother, Cordelia- She makes the stage much sunnier, while there's some drippling rain coming down. As the clouds go away, Lip looks delightedly up the sky. A rainbow slowly starts appear above her, (about a width of that of Battlefield) which is above the stage. She'll then run on top of it. This scenario takes though 3 seconds (Kinda like how Pit's Final Smash begins)

Now you get a another screen which lets you play Puzzle League! Score combos and chains by swapping the tiles and making same tiles connect with each other. As you score combos and chains like usually in Puzzle League-games, you build up Lip's power to her wand.

After 10-second play, the screen disappears, and Lip will unleash a huge flower spell that spreads across the stage. The effectiveness of the Final Smash is based on your skill: the range and the amount of flowers, the durability of the flowers on enemies' heads, and how rapidly they increase their damage meter.

Along with it Lip fills the stage in flowers of all kind as a temporary decoration (similar to how Mario Final leaves some flickering flare on ground after travelling along it.)-- The flowers though aren't there as temporary decoration: it seemingly slows down the characters. Thus, when Lip falls down from the rainbow after it poofs off at the end of the Final Smash, she can go knock her slowly-moving opponents out.

Tips Regarding The Final Smash

To give this move a catch so it will not be overpowered, her attack isn't very effective if it's used on the ground, because the range of flower spell will be quite small, even if you score very well done chains and combos. Lip also can be hit during the time when she tries to pull of her final smash on the rainbow, and if hit enough times (depending on her damage), she'll flinch and loses control.

This is why you need to activate the Final Smash while being as high above the stage as you can: Lip's flower spell gets more range the more she's above the ground, and opponents also can't hit you so easily.

While the enemies. enemies can also avoid being trapped in the huge flowerbed by staying airborne, but still, there's the flowers they have to remove. At the end, as mentioned above, the more well you do in scoring and make sure you use the final smash as high as you can above the stage, the more harder is for your opponents to avoid it and it's effects.

As mentioned above, this move gets more effective and is very suited for you if you have played Puzzle League before, and are familiar with comboing and chaining.
How then, you ask?

As seen in Puzzle League/Panel De Pon in general, you don't though get very high score by just making three tiles connect together all the time: the combo's and more importantly, chains, give more points to add on your score than just regular tile connecting. So try to learn comboing and chaining, to really makes this Final Smash a killer. I recommend learning to skillchain, because that might really make your score get huge.

Thus, as you can see, Walk On The Rainbow's power depends on your skill, which is in context with Puzzle League's underlying competitive manner.

: When browsing internet about what Lip was suggested to have as her Final Smash, I was dumbfounded by the fact that everyone thinks her final smash should consist her using panels and junk block to attack her opponent.
But of course, back in that time, I didn't any better clue as well, since I didn't anything that would be more incharacter to her.

Long time after, I started to watch a walkthrough of

As the game's theme was to to help Nintendo's forgotten characters, there were one to two main missions to help them.(Lip had two missions)
In second mission where Nick regained his powers to create a rainbow above him, he had to help Lip on her second mission: at near end of it, he made out a huge rainbow for her. Lip ran on it, and then, she pulled of the same flower spell all over Mimin Island, filling many places in flowers.

This kind of magic spell as her final smash is more incharacter for her, besides Lip has always ran on rainbows during PDP: this has been referred on Captain Rainbow where she has a drawing on her room depicting herself on a rainbow. She also ran on a rainbow end credits of Panel De Pon. (Of course, Yoshi followed the suit

Shortly this Final Smash describes her love for rainbows and her powers a Flower Fairy. Also the mechanic is of Final Smash has been centered playing of Puzzle League/Panel De Pon successfully, to let Puzzle League-fans give out their best of their skill when they use it.

The taunt also her humorous, seeing as she's ironically a "Fairy of Flowers".

: In Score Attack, when you get to last stage which features Thanatos, Lip had to use her powers to defeat him. When Lip gains victory, she'd hop happily and continuosly, while Thanatos plummets (somewhere) on his doom.

The clumsiness is just there to make sure it's not a copy of Ice Climbers' Up Taunt in Brawl and one of their victory poses. Besides, it'll look quite cute.

- Lip blows a cloud of fairy dust. It flies slowly and slightly above the ground. It has the aproximate range of one of Luigi's fireballs, and pretty much works kinda the same. Damage: 6%

B up:
Flower Glide
- Lip pulls out her stick, turning it into a giant blowball while jumping into the air, and slowly glides umbrella-esque down. This move does no damage.

B down:
Garbage Block
- Lip calls down a small garbage block from the air. Lip stops wherever she is (she is also not floating down in midair) until the block is coming down. This means she can cover areas with these blocks, however only with time windows in between. The block itself lands and breaks on the first obstacle it hits, and does pretty much the same knockback as Kirby's Stone move, though its flaw is that it's not coming out as fast as Stone. Damage: 18%

Note: Generally Lip's throws are pretty weak in sending the enemies fly - I spare myself typing that at every throw.

- Lip grabs her opponent at their collar and slaps them. (Medium speed, 2% per hit)

Final Smash
Tetris Attack
Lip exclaims "Ikuso, Panerus!" and jumps in the air. Suddenly a wall of Panels raises from the ground (see Iceberg). If the enemy touches a green panel, they'll get flowered, at a purple panel, they'll get poisoned, red ones explode when they're touched and cyan ones freeze them. The "used" panel turns into a blank one and disappears after a while. You can only stay unharmed when you're placed on a yellow panel. Garbage Blocks randomly fall from above, too. Lip is not affected by any of the panel effects or blocks, whatsoever.
The Final Smash is finished with the panels going down, leaving the stage as it was, and Cordelia, the final boss of Panel de Pon, appears in the background, and blows a comet onto the center of the stage, which explodes an a not too big burst. After this, Lip appears again where she was standing.

Role in Subspace Emissary
Lip's role is rather small. In the part of the story where Olimar gets attacked by the giant ROB, Lip wants to save him and his Pikmin, however is interrupted by Captain Falcon's attack. At the end of that cutscene, after Falcon sled through Olimar's Pikmin, she stands along with Olimar and the Red Pikmin. She's playable in that sub-storyline from then on.

Just give her bloomers like Peach has in Smash-games. Or give her a makeover which makes her skirt get coverred or be gone.

Besides, isn't Zero Suit Samus's suggestive skintight latex bodysuit ? Nope, people say. It is just accepted as super-hot. So why would Lip be banned because her short skirt? I wish Zamus was banned from Smash for this reason as well.

I think its more the fear of pedophilia or fighting a child that is turning people away rather than just her skirt. Then again, we have young boy's such as Ness and Toon Link playable and no one is complaining. Neither for Nana if it's gender related.

Make her older like the age of a teenager or young adult and let her wear pants or shorts under her skirt. Basically what they did with Pit but not that drastic and she should hopefully be fine... A redesign for her isn't neccesary, I believe. Unless she would go the same treatment as Pit.

Oh also, the Nintendo Puzzle series have been one of my fav games ever. And Lip is the one who represents them, I support her because I'd like to throw some garbage blocks to my opponents in Smash!

Hmm, this reminds me of one supporter of Lip named HentaiKitty in GameFAQS. She also did some sketches where she tried to depict Lip having slightly modernised makeover:



Much like you've been concerned about yours, this doesn't really look much different when compared to her regular self.

  • She's a one-shot character. Even the series she debuted in has abandoned her.

It hasn't. She has been referenced and recently been given cameos in last 6 years, even in her own series. These include:

- Planet Puzzle League/Puzzle League DS (Japanese Version) (2007)

- SSBB (2008)

- Captain Rainbow (2008)


Besides, even if it's unknown will she be appearing as a protagonist in any future installments of Panel De Pon, she's still regarded as a mascot for this series, so there's a good chance that she'll be appearing in that series in some way or another.

  • We have already representatives for Puzzle League, and that is Yoshi. (Or Pikachu)

This is essentially saying same as "Lip's Stick belongs to Yoshi-series!/Pokemon-series!"
So why we already have many things referencing on the Flower Fairy's series, and not Yoshi's?

As we know, the Panel De Pon-content and references to that series in Smash aren't labeled to be originating from Yoshi's series (Tetris Attack), so there's nothing indicating that Yoshi is representing the series:
after all, we're talking about a localized, dolled-up installment here which didn't even get included in the canon of the actual games, unlike Super Mario Bros USA. At the end, Yoshi's only representing his own series like he has done all time along.

This goes for Pikachu as well: Pokemon-series doesn't even count any of it's spinoffs since Melee's ZeroOne-trophy from PKMN Snap.
Why PKMN Puzzle League isn't referenced by Smash Bros is understandable: When Panel De Pon was planned to be made a sequel for N64, it was later turned into Pokemon Puzzle League and being sold only at US and Europe.
When Nintendo Puzzle Collection came in, Pokemon Puzzle League was actually reskinned to feature the daughters of the original fairies, and turned into Panel De Pon NGC. Clearly this shows that Japanese favoured magical bishoujo fairies over much more popular Pokemon-franchise.


  • She has a miniskirt! She can't be in due that!
We were already given Zero Suit Samus, who wears a skintight latex bodysuit! And what is more suprising is that NONE had any problems with that!
Same goes for Ayumi Tachibana-trophy in Melee, which had a schoolgirl wearing an actual miniskirt.

There's not been any official word stating that any "suggestive" or "inappropriate" clothing attire has been regarded as an obstacle by Sakurai, which makes this argument more of an assumption than anything.

And even if this issue would be actually been a problem, Lip could easily be given bloomers under her mini-skirt or be done a major redesign like Pit had back in Brawl. In fact, one of the users here even drew a "battle redesign" for her. Check it through the link.

  • Her weapon's an item. She's out!

Sakurai could easily remove the item and give it back to it's owner. Also, if Screw Attack was an item, then how come Samus still can take it when she has a Screw Attack herself?


  • I've never heard of her, and from what I'm seeing from first glance, she doesn't look like she can't fight.

This argument could be applied to almost some characters in Smash Bros overall: Fox, R.O.B, Olimar... hell, even Captain Falcon despite him being a bounty hunter because none had any idea how he'd fight like.

Yet they're included in the game. *Sigh*

Look, anyone can become a fighter if put into a fighting game. For example, Roll in Tatsunoko Vs Capcom. She seems like little maid robot girl first, but just wait when she beats her opponent with a MOP, and even finishes them with huge bucket of cleaning water. And under hands of a very experienced competitive player, she's deadly.
Talk about badass adorable: how would one being talented with her feel like after winning, hm?

Anyway, back in N64-days, Sakurai had been wondering about some characters which could make it as playables for Melee. He had stated some characters which could be a huge stretch to give a moveset: for example, some retro characters like Bubbles (which can't do much except move), Balloon Fighter (He would be useless without his balloon) and Excite Biker (who has to rely on his bike all the time, maybe always tripping out of it and has to go back to ride on it again)

There's though nothing that suggests Sakurai saying about Lip not being able to fight. The only negative thing he said about her is that she's not well-known.

Ironically to some opposers of Lip saying she hasn't has fought before, she has battled against evil lords and even defeated a GODDESS. (See the Hard Mode of Panel De Pon.)

This topic has slew of movesets as well for Lip, so go check them out. Lip's usually imagined to sport her stick and using mechanics or gimmicks from her games, like garbage blocks, the panels and so on. Some people also try to make good use of her powers as a flower fairy, but to lesser extent.



  • Why hit little girls?

SSB-series doesn't know any mercy on any characters, no matter what they are like.


  • Mario hitting Peach, though they are close friends and Peach's usually a royalty? Check.
  • Link battling against Zelda, even if they have same issues as Mario and Peach? Check.
  • You can beat up bunch of talented but young boys? Check.
  • Heck, beating a Pokemon by yourself without having your own Pokemon?
...


  • With a brutal items that could be deadly in real life? CHECK.

It's not like any rules apply in these kind of fighting games. So how come Lip's different from the rest?
It's just quite bizarre that anyone can be fought despite what they are actually, but that's what makes Smash Bros quite quirky and unique. Look also at the other fighting games.


  • She screams too much lolicon. Nintendo won't like that.

By that logic, I'd say Zero Suit Samus would be "too kinky". But look here, she's still in the game and looking from the slew of fanart done to her, none actually minds her- No, completely contrary to that.
(Though it seems like it has made her now a sex icon more than one of the most influential female heroines in videogames nowadays)

Japanese love cute girls. I mean, look at manga and anime industry: K-ON! and Lucky Star are popular, not because their loose humor slice of life stories, but because their cute characters.

So to whole "too lolicon"-issue, keep in mind that not everyone thinks at the same way as you do. There's more tendency for people seeing her as "adorable" or "cute" rather than
"a very prone victim of being chased by pedophiles or being drawed in Rule34 by master explicit lolicon artists".
Lastly, there's still not been given any statements on characters' design or attire being an obstacle for character to be in Smash Bros. So saying that Lip is too lolicon is a meaningless argument.

And if you're supporting Ashley from WarioWare despite saying this, consider yourself being a hypocrite because she "screams lolicon" too.


  • Wouldn't her inclusion and the fact she's pretty lolicon threaten the localisation of Smash Bros 4?

SSB4's localisation halting because of Lip's inclusion is a silly argument which can't ever happen because:

- There's no reason to do so.


- They can't do so.


Even Roll (again who also could be said to be in the same line as Lip in means of a design) was in Tatsunoko VS Capcom yet that game was also ported overseas. Besides, Nintendo skipping SSB4's release for overseas because of Lip's inclusion would be the most controversial issue ever to happen in the industry's career, and seriously would hurt their income. Everyone knows that Smash Bros sells a millions.


Lastly, as I said above, Sakurai hasn't so far yet said that a character's design would be an obstacle to someone to be included (Expect Sukapon who he found hard to program when trying to include him in Melee.)

SSB isn't also same as Panel De Pon because those games had mainly the fairies in the cover (which lead to the whole dolled up installment-issues). Smash Bros though hosts lots of other characters in it's games, so there isn't need for one character to be taken out for the same reasons (seemingly being too girly? Peach says hi) that was done for Panel De Pon, because Lip's inclusion is nowhere able to hurt Smash Bros's sales despite her design. Smash Bros would still sell as great as it did last times anyway.

Shortly put, what applied to Panel De Pon can't apply to Smash Bros, because they're both two different games with their own characters and presentation. And in Smash Bros's case, the presentation of the game can't be given heavy modifications just to keep one character at bay or even go so far as to halt the localisation. Smash Bros just doesn't
work that way. And what's more important to know, it's not necessary.

  • She's Japan-only. Sakurai didn't want to add them, remember?

He never said he wouldn't ever add them. He just said he's not keen on focusing on japanese only representation comparing the popular character representation. But look we got: Marth, Roy (Fuuin No Tsurugi is still Japan-only) and Lucas.
Marth got his series out after a long time he was Japan-only by debuting in SSBM and would eventually debut finally in his localised game. Lucas still doesn't have his game outside of Japan yet, which makes him truly Japan-only, same for Roy, who's one of the most requested veterans to return.
So still saying we can't have Japan-only characters, like Takamaru?


  • She's too obscure to be included in Smash Bros! Even Sakurai stated so once!

Despite that statement, there's all this content in Smash Bros that references to her, notable her wand as an item. To some people, (including me), this actually managed to introduce them to Lip and Panel De Pon-franchise if looking at the origin for this item or something else.

I'm pretty positive that we'll get some more content gearing at Panel De Pon-franchise in SSB4. In fact, why Sakurai even pays this much attention to the series despite the protagonist seemingly "
not having any moveset potential and being obscure"? Maybe there's some indication that he tries to make series more known by adding those little shoutouts that can be even part of a battle? It's just a theory, but seeing how he praised the series, it's not that of a stretch think so.

Maybe one day when Sakurai thinks Lip has been referenced enough in Smash, she can be given an appearance without people going too confused on who this character is. Instead they'd call her "The Lip's Stick-Girl" or get to know that Lip's the real owner of her stick and is the one Smash Bros has been referencing on her time to time, indicating they'd try to play the original Panel De Pon one day: for example. they'd notice the Kirby's pink garbage block-cameo being referenced from Panel De Pon.


Who knows, maybe Lip might even be able to hit the shores of America, all accepted to appear in her own localised game instead of being replaced like before. The chances for this are higher if she's featured as a playable or even as an Assist Trophy in SSB4.


EDIT: A recent translation by Grinmir in the OP (which hopefully is the best that has been done for this) seems to support my theory of this even further. While it seems more like he laments the fact that Lip and her game series seem overlooked by people, it might support the subtle nature of the references towards this character by a notch.

and Lip could have an attack where she could put a flower on the opponent's head and rack up some good damage.

I'd be for the removal of the item personally, or for it to be made into a more generic flower staff while Lip gets her definitive wand for herself. See also: Space furries getting the Ray Gun, especially Wolf, Diddy grabbing bananas, King Dedede getting the hammer, Peach getting the parasol, etc.

Okay so, I also had some moves in mind for Lip, and I was suprised no one included the core mechanic of her series. That being

Panel Flip- a space distorting move in front of Lip that causes a small area in front of her to become mirrored completely. All the stage elements, backgrounds, etc become a mirror image. Any other character that overlaps this area has their controls inverted, and any projectiles that hit the mirror image get reflected back. The flip stays in place for a brief time, and it does NOT act as a cape would. If Fox uses illusion into the move he will go right through it. It is simply CONTROLS that are inverted in the mirror, such that running through it causes your character to do their turn around animation if the player does not move the stick. This effects everything from jumping, to shield angling, to rolling while in the mirror.

Pretty crazy move. I wonder how it'd look in action...

You mean the cursor as the move none didn't include? I at least did- it's the Side B and it's named Quick Swap. It's slightly somewhere what you're trying to do, but it's more of a defensive move than area-altering mechanic.

Hey sorry for taking a while but I finally finished it.

Yeah yeah, I know it doesn't look that different from her original design. I told you that I was struggling to give her a different from her already good enough looking original design... >_>

I was thinking of giving her more flowers but it made her look really stupid so I removed most of them. I was also thinking of adding some more stuff to her Stick but I forgot to do that once I was nearly finished. Oh and I made her wear tights so that skirt issue should hopefully be resolved.

Hope you enjoy. Feel free to criticize, Hate, Thrash, whatever you want with this artwork. Just don't expect me to change anything because once I'm done I'd prefer to start on my next artwork. Any constructive criticism will be welcomed though. ^_^

Really well-made and geared-up redesign to fit for battling. I'll try to see where I'd put this so other people with the issues on her design would see this.

While I'm aware it's not that different from her usual design, I might say that this looks more like she'd be geared to "battle", with those tweaks and new details on her design.

It should be fine, seeing as Screw Attack is still an item despite Samus. same with banana peels and Diddy Kong.

Finally, a Lip Thread. All we need now is a Stafy thread and thus have we completed the circle of retro+japanese characters we've always supported back then
