Preview: Smash Melee at Super Smash Con

Last year, we had the opportunity to experience a very special convention, made entirely to celebrate all things Smash Bros: Super Smash Con (SSC).

For the Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament, SSC 2015 had multiple high caliber players in attendance, such as Weston “Westballz” Dennis, Jason “Mew2king” Zimmerman and William “Leffen” Hjelte. The competition was tough and the hype was real. Ultimately, Leffen took the trophy home.

This year, we get another installment of SSC. With it, we also get new contenders like Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma, Joseph “Mango” Márquez and Masaya “aMSa” Chikamoto, all competing for the title of Super Smash Con Champion.

Three-Way Showdown

With three of Melee’s ‘Gods’ in attendance, the fight for first place is expected to be between them.

Hungrybox comes out fresh from winning EVO 2016 and he’s looking like the favorite to win this tournament, especially since the the previous champion, Leffen, is unable to attend. However, it’ll be no easy task.

Both Mew2King and Mango want first place too. Mew2King just recently beat Hbox with a 3-0 at WTFox2, a convincing victory over the one player who has dominated the summer. Does he plan to do a repeat of that tournament?
Mango's last victory over Hungrybox was at Dreamhack Austin, winning two consecutive sets over the Jigglypuff player. Aside from that, he hasn't been able to best Hungrybox since his winning streak started. Will this weekend be different?

The Challengers
The 3 Gods are the favorites, but they’re not alone. Westballz, Axe, Wizzrobe, aMSa, Johnny “S2J” Kim and more are all looking to take the tournament.

Westballz has the potential to beat any of the players competing, but his placings have been lacking recently, failing to get Top 8 at EGLX and WTFox2.

Counter Logic Gaming’s dynamic duo, Zac “SFAT” Cordoni and Kevin “PewPewU” Toy, both had impressive showings recently. PewPewU finally broke his 9th place curse and managed to finish Top 8 at EVO 2016. SFAT on the other hand, is coming fresh from Clutch City Clash, taking second place and double eliminating Mango.

The Falcon players are here in full force too, with both Wizzrobe and S2J attending SSC. Wizzrobe's incredible tech-chasing skills have given Mango a run for his money. He's even managed to upset Hungrybox with a clean 3-0 at WTFox2. Meanwhile, Tempo Storm’s recent acquisition, S2J, surprised everyone by finishing 5th at EVO 2016.

Double Trouble
SSC 2016 will also feature a doubles tournament, so we can expect to see great teams play. With many strong teams, here are some of the threats to watch out for.
  • PewPewU & SFAT: Considered the best team in Melee, the PewFat combination is a favorite to win the tournament. Years of teaming up have created an amazing synergy that is something to watch out for.

  • Shroomed & Westballz: Both members of last year’s Top 10, this team is looking like a strong pick for first place.

  • Mango & S2J: With a great showing at Dreamhack Winter last year, this team of explosive players is sure to be a strong contender.

  • MacD & Druggedfox: A strong team on paper. With MacD’s aggressive style and Druggedfox excellent tech-chasing, this team packs a punch.
  • Chillin & ChuDat: A blast from the past! While they haven’t had strong results in a while, both of them are capable of competing with the top.
Stream Schedule
For the streams, SSC has hired two teams: MD/VA’s VGBootCamp and the Texas-based Tourney Locator. You can look at the stream schedule below:
Tuning in will give you a taste of Melee’s variety of casters, such as D’Ron “D1” Maingrette, Daniel “Tafokints” Lee and Panda Global’s Robert “Wobbles” Wright. Whether you're looking for play-by-play or analytical commentary, SSC's spread of casters has got you covered.

We also need to remember that SSC is not only a tournament but a convention as well, with many fun events planned throughout the weekend. If you want to check what SSC has to offer, you can do so here.
