Welcome Back Commander.

What is Command & Conquer?

CnC is generally considered the father of the Real Time Strategy genre. While other RTS games came before it, CnC was the one that popularize the concept & made it mainstream. The main sub-series of the franchise is about the constant wars between
the Global Defense Intuitive (GDI) & Brother of Nod, led by the immortal Kane, fought over the better part of a century all the while the Earth is slowly being consumed by the slow spread of alien crystal called Tiberium. While the IP has been in hiatus, it's been making a slow comeback of late with CnC Rivals on mobile 2 years ago & the just recently released remasters of the 1st 2 games on Steam.

Wait, was Command & Conquer ever on a Nintendo system?

Actually yes! While the series is best experienced on PC, there have been a number of console ports for different entries, in particular the 1st game was remade in 3D on the Nintendo 64. A far more elaborate production than a simple straight-forward port. Even the CG cutscenes got remade in real time, which is both impressive for the effort they put into the N64 version, & hilarious for how bad it looks.

OK, so who is Kane then?

Kane is the ever enigmatic & yet oh so charismatic leader of the Brotherhood of Nod & main antagonist of the Tiberium universe in the CnC series, having appeared in 7 total games across the series' history (8 if we're counting Kane's wrath as separate from CnC3). For the longest time he worked as a shadowy figure, manipulating 3rd world nations & other terrorist groups across the globe, before finally making himself a public figure in 1995 when the 1st war between
GDI & Nod began. Much is unknown about his true history & the biggest mystery surrounding Kane is his apparent immortality. His earliest known appearance being in the mid-1940s as an advisor to Stalin. & since then has shown himself to the world alive & well in 1995, 2030, 2047, & 2077, appearing seemingly not a day older every single time. He is also unkillable in addition to never aging, He's been incinerated by giant space lasers (as seen above), impaled by very large jagged blades, incinerated by space lasers again, & gotten back up from being gunned down mere seconds later. Kane is woundable however, he can't just shrug off anything that would be lethal to a normal person & his needing to heal from devastating injuries is 1 of the main reasons for the long periods of absence between games.

Why should Kane be in SSBU?

Because simply put Kane is 1 of the greatest villains in video game history. A magnificent mastermind & expert chess master in every game he's in, able to rally millions to his cause & carry out long elaborate plans to get what he wants time & time again. While most games canonically have
GDI as the winners, in the end Kane was ultimately victorious in achieving his long term goals. Yeah, CnC4 wasn't very popular with the fandom but I still liked that in the end he won.

His actor, Joseph Kucan, brings him to life in every 1 of his appearances, commanding (heh) the player's total attention with his bombastic speeches of fighting for a greater cause. While Kane may be the villain, he is undeniably the face of the entire CnC IP as there are few other recurring characters besides him & the ones that do haven't been in as many games & tend to get recast every time. Kucan is up there with Charles Martinet for the longest an actor has been playing the same character in video games, which further cemented the character as iconic.

A few highlights of Kane's best moments (realistic violence warning):

So how does Kane fight/what's his moveset?

Well ok, that's admittedly a pretty good question. Being the commanding officer of a military force in an RTS, there has been very little need for him to get his hands dirty. But that doesn't mean he lacks the capability to fight, as he's demonstrated a few traits that prove he's not to be underestimated in one-on-one combat:

  • His immortality. The obvious, he can't die & it takes a lot just hurt him.
  • He is allegedly thousands of years old, & certainly has had plenty of time to learn many forms of combat.
  • Impeccable aiming skills. As seen in 1 of the above videos, Kane is a crackshot with handguns.
  • Implied super strength. In the GDI Tiberian Sun ending, Kane was able to restrain a tiberium mutant, who are faster & stronger than regular humans. The one in question was a hero unit & thus stronger even than the other mutants. His strength was again seen in the Nod Tiberian Twilight Ending when he lifts & strangles Colonel James with 1 hand
  • Past that, it is not unreasonable for him to utilize the assorted weaponry in Nod's arsenal, which got increasingly more advanced over the decades.
So it should still be possible to whip up a moveset.

A-Standard punch/kick combo.

Tilt A-Slashes with a knife.

Run A-Strikes with a Saboteur's claw.

Air A-Flame Thrower. Short range fiery aerials.

>/</v Smash-Throws a grenade at his feet for an explosion based smash.

^ Smash- EMP Emitter-Sends out a short range EMP pulse above Kane.

Hold B-Weapons Menu. Holding the standing special button brings up a radial of different weapons. Each weapon is strong against some fighters & weak against others. This reflects the rock/paper/scissors balancing of the various infantry & vehicle types in CnC.

Tap B-Fire Currently The Equipped Weapon.

Equippable weapons:
-Tiberium Flechette Gun. Fire tiberium shards that do little damage but inflict a brief poison effect. :ultolimar::ultmegaman::ultrob::ultsamus::ultgnw::ultinkling::ultganondorf::ultlucario::ultpalutena::ultryu::ultken::ultsheik::ult_terry::ultdarksamus::ultmewtwo::ultrobin::ultridley::ultivysaur::ultzelda::ultzss::ultwiifittrainer::ultpacman::ulticeclimbers::ultpiranha::ultdarkpit::ultwario::ultdoc::ultmetaknight::ultkirby: are resistant to it,
-Rocket Launcher. Fires a rocket. Doesn't have homing capabilities like :ultsnake:'s. Does damage based on opponent's weight, heavyweights like :ultridley: or :ultkingdedede: take a lot of damage from it while lightweights take very little.
-Volt Rifle. Shoots bursts of lightning that inflict a brief stun effect. The fighters that aren't hurt by Tiberium Flechette are weaker to Volt Rifle as a trade off.
-Laser Pistol. Kane's gun from Tiberian Sun. A faster firing weapon meant for more easily hitting speedy lightweights but heavier characters have a super armor reaction.

^B-Glide Pack. Kane's hang glider. Sends him straight upward at first & then slowly float back down. The player can influence its direction on the decent.

>B-Grenade. Tosses a grenade in front of him that predictably explodes after a moment.

vB-Black Hand. Summons a bodyguard that follows Kane. Dies in a few hits, but the Kane player can get behind the Black Hand soldier to use him as a shield. The guard doesn't attack on his own & only when ordered to.

vB while Black Hand is summoned-Black Hand fires a laser rifle. The rifle does neutral damage to all opponents.

Grab/Throw: Picks up his opponent with one hand & casually tosses them aside.

Final Smash:
Orbital Ion Cannon. While nuclear missiles are Nod's traditional superweapon, there ain't no way that's getting into Smash let's just go with GDI's superweapon instead. Nod has hijacked it before & as an added bonus, Kane could do his "praise the sun" pose when the cannon fires down on opponents.

Alt colors/costumes

Kane tends to wear a lot of black, but he's never worn the exact same outfit twice. So this gives him some canon variety.

Stage - Temple Prime

Kane's home sweet home & base of operations for his entire army. The temple itself is in the background while players fight on an airstrip in front of it. Bottomless pits in the form of huge creators created by enemy artillery are to the left & right sides of the stage. The stage has a high number of stage hazards that pose threats to all players, reflecting the chaos & violence of war.

Every so often a cargo plane will fly overhead & drop off a Nod vehicle onto the airstrip. The vehicle will serve as a stage hazard attacking players until they are destroyed.

  • Light Tank. Armored vehicle that takes the longest to die but has the most easily avoided projectiles.
  • Missile Bike. Fragile but extremely speedy bike that can damage players by driving into them just as much as shooting missiles.
  • Flame Tank. Medium armor with huge flamethrowers.
  • Stealth Tank. A more fragile tank that turns invisible at will & ambushes players.
Additionally, defensive structures will be in the background between the temple & airstrip. These structures will fire a few shots & then despawn ("sold").
  • SAM site. Fire anti-air missiles at airborne fighters.
  • Turret. Launches bombs that causes explosions on the stage.
  • Obelisk of Light. A tower shaped like a scorpion's tail that sweeps the stage with a red laser beam.

Finally, tiberium crystals will sometimes grow right in front of the airstrip, causing gradual damage to whomever gets too close. After a while a harvester will come remove the tiberium. The harvester also acts as a moving platform while it is on-screen.

This stage is perhaps overkill on hazards but IMO new stages lately have been a bit lacking in the crazy department, so I want one that goes all in.

MUSIC

AKA the other reason to want a Command & Conquer rep. The soundtracks of Frank Klepacki is some of the best music in the entire gaining industry not yet featured in SSB. With so many great tracks to pick from, I'm just gonna shorten it to the Remastered soundtrack for the time being:

Act on Instinct
No Mercy
We Will Stop Them Now
Prepare for Battle
Industrial
Iron Fist
In the Line of Fire
Just Do It Up
Full Stop
Hell March

In Closing

I do sure love going for the more out there characters (Bea, Captain N, Freddy) & Kane might be the least plausible yet. But as far as possible new villain reps go, especally 3rd party villains (an underrepresented category to be sure), Kane's a pretty dang solid pick IMO.

He was one of the characters I was considering for my rise of the zero percent chancers part 2 poll. I'm glad he has a support thread I can send participants too. I already have poll options picked out for part 2 but he'll be in part 3 for sure if I make one.
