The Spirits team couldn't even be bothered to get the actual main characters for Advance Wars as Spirits. i.e. Sami, Max, Nell, Hawke, Sturm, Jake, Rachel, Will, Isabella, etc.

I am pretty salt that we ended up with the likes of Eagle & Olaf over them who bare more importance to the story. And I also believe we should have had like 8 spirits in total instead of 4.
Considering how many legitimately obscure characters are spirits even 8 seems kinda low tbh (also where's my boy Grit?). How the hell did AW get shafted so hard this game?
Also when it comes to spirits Kirby is missing a bunch of main characters, villains, and an entire mainline game despite being one of Nintendo's bestselling franchises. I just don't understand...

If you think that's bizarre, consider that the Pig Mask Army and its leader Porky are nowhere to be seen, the only traces of them are Masked Man and the Absolutely Safe Capsule, and even then we're not absolutely sure that Porky's actually in it!

Also, Sylux isn't around as a Metroid spirit, but that's not as important.

Regardless of whether or not these occurrences even tip off DLC appearances, the spirit team is a bunch of incompetent loonies no better than the site staff.

I mean 8 is the amount Golden Sun had so I thought a similar amount would be justified.

I feel ya. Advance Wars got shafted so hard in this game and hence I really want Operation Warzone to remedy this. At least a Mii Costume but we want to work towards getting a playable character down the road.

Honestly wish the Spirit team did more research and/or had more knowledgeable people on that team. Because it was really grating what they did.

For those who don't know, I run the 'Pilotwings for Smash' thread. This being said, to see not only the cast of Pilotwings 64 NOT get Spirits (even though there IS official artwork of those characters out there, despite claims to the contrary), but the instructors of the OG Pilotwings ALSO not get any Spirits (despite the latter supposedly being the most popular of the PW trilogy, not to mention how Nintendo could have just utilized their headshot sprites), and all the series got was a PLANE... well, I guess it goes without saying that I was pretty miffed once the Spirits list leaked.)

I totally agree with you all that the Spirits team aren't exactly what Sakurai hyped them up to be.

Wait, there's artwork for the Pilotwings 64 crew? I've looked all over and couldn't find any.

Has anyone thought to comission NinNakajima on Twitter? They specialise in Smash comissions. I'd do it myself, but I don't have the right currency.
We actually floated this idea on Andy's channel in the Assist Alliance Discord server but it was just kinda dropped.

If anyone is interested in us all contributing for that commission we can consider that idea. Like maybe split the cost between 5-7 of us or something lol. I would be open to the idea and it would be good publicity for our Wrench Boy.

Wars got shafted really hard in Ultimate honestly. It was really disappointing. And yeah, there are some questionable choices in regards to spirits...
I know. It was because of that lack of content that lead to me getting my hopes up for Andy in this Fighters Pass (assuming there was an AW in development) but in hindsight, I can say it was wishful thinking and grasping at straws™® .

That being said, if all the AW fans came together and really pushed Operation Warzone to the levels it could get to, we could really make a difference. The problem lies within reaching out to these people and energizing an otherwise comatose fanbase (to put it bluntly given how long we've gone without anything).

Also, let me guys know if you're up to the idea of us all pitching in and contributing to the NinNakajima commission. If a lot of us all contributed, I assume the price wouldn't be that expensive split between 5-7 people. I hope you guys will consider it.

Here's a graphic I made for Andy's potential in Smash as a fighter, and a concept of what he could bring if added.
Awesome! Gonna post it here as well for people who don't want to use the Imgur link

I gotta say. I dig the moveset! Although for mine, I had Anti-Air apart of the Land unit summons and it more or less is the $$$ equivalent to Hero's MP System where Andy deploys units from a drop-down menu. I had a similar idea for Battle Copter as well.

Hyper Repair as Down B is actually pretty interesting. I had many different ideas for that but honestly this might be the best implementation i've seen. Maybe just have Hyper Repair & Hyper Upgrade as the same special? I.e. Andy has a CO Power Meter that will allow him to use Hyper Upgrade after some time. Mainly because I much prefer the Megatank Final Smash myself and it fits the "fast & furious" Final Smashes in this game.

I'm glad you like it!

I thought that the megatank-style final smash would seem a bit same-ey when compared to many of the other final smashes currently in the game, so that's why I changed it to Hyper Upgrade, but regardless, I'd be happy to do more of these in the future if needed!

Great news guys! Wargroove has done well enough to warrant a physical release! On top of making it's PS4 debut, it will have a physical release on October 29th for both Switch & PS4!

Awesome that the Advance Wars-style of gameplay is thriving even in it's long absence. You gotta think they did really well to push out physical copies of their game and that's encouraging for someone wanting to see Advance Wars return!

Now lets just hope IntSys takes note of this (fingers crossed).

Is it? I mean with the Landmaster gone I can't think of anything similar to that aside from Samus' FS but that's very different from a Megatank going ballistic on everyone on stage.

Hyper Upgrade is a good idea for a FS too no lie. I even had that idea at one point but it was pretty bland TBH. When someone brought up the idea of a Megatank FS, I was immediately sold when I thought of it in my head lol.

I've been wondering... considering how Smash Ultimate has pretty retooled just about every FS to be more 'streamlined', how could this be applied to Andy? Like, it can be any FS you want to explain about, be it Hyper Repair, Hyper Upgrade, a Megatank, anything.

How would that work tho? I mean I love the concept but how would you be able to shift between FS' or have a set FS?

I do like the idea of shifting between Hyper Upgrade, Air Assault (Bombers, Fighters, etc), and a Megatank tho. I just think something like that is unlikely personally.

So here's a question for all of you guys. Had this on my mind the other day and though it would make for interesting discussion.

A common talking point in why people think a new Advance Wars can't happen is because of "Intelligent Systems not wanting to do two turn-based strategy games" and "would rather do other genre's instead". All that jazz even though i'm highly skeptical of that given we've seen plenty of studio's who've managed two series in the same genre just fine and no comment from IntSys even suggests this.

But lets say hypothetically Advance Wars did get revived but instead, it came from a different development studio. Out of all these studio's, which ones do you think would...

A) Handle the series best?
B) Would make it reach levels it's never seen before?

Granted we don't know if any of these studio's even want to do a TBS game at all but lets say they were willing to take on Advance Wars.

Nintendo Studio's

Monolith Soft: This might seem odd to some but I honestly think the Wars IP could be done justice in Monolith's hands. I mean Wars isn't too far off from being an RPG and all so it might be something up their alley. Of course that would mean a new AW in the artstyle of XC2 which i'm not exactly thrilled about lol. Regardless, this is something I would be interested in seeing.

Camelot: Imagine both Advance Wars and Golden Sun being done by the same studio? Camelot is renowned for their work on the Shining Force series so it wouldn't be as much of a stretch. Personally speaking tho, I wouldn't want this if only to get Camelot working on a new Golden Sun instead lol.

Retro Studio's: They've handled plenty of Nintendo IP before that originated in Japan (DK & Metroid games). I'm sure they could do well with this IP although it might be difficult in between DK/Metroid releases.

Next Level Games: Another western choice for this like Retro. They could take fun, creative liberties like they did with Mario Strikers.

Alpha Dream: I suppose Alpha having AW would make their IP lineup mirror that of IntSys. Both with their respective Mario RPG series and their own TBS series. I wonder if that's something they could do or be interested in?

Game Freak: This is a very oddball choice. It's not something I would be thrilled about especially after the Sword & Shield controversy but man if they somehow got a Pokemon X Advance Wars crossover that would do wonders for the Wars series!

Third Party Studio's

Platinum Games: This might be something up their alley. They're a really creative studio and maybe they could take this franchise to levels not seen before?

Chucklefish: Well this is a no-brainer after Wargroove. If there was one third-party studio I could say with confidence who could take this IP, CF would do this franchise the justice it deserves.

Ubisoft: Mario Rabbids Batle Kingdom anyone? Kinda funny given AW was an inspiration for the devs. I would be interested in Ubisofts take on the franchise if that ever did happen.

Capcom: I actually think this would work great. Capcom has worked on Nintendo IP before (think back to the Oracle/Minish Cap Zelda games). Also, Ace Attorney is a very "Advance Wars" like game in terms of it's setting & tone so if a new AW was made in the style of AA that would be amazing.

Bandai Namco: Another idea that I don't think is particularly likely especially with Smash stuff and what have you. Still, it's an idea I guess.

Atlus: I would throw this idea out there but it's more likely that it gets passed over in favor of more Persona games similar to poor Shin Megami Tensai. :( But still, I think Atlus would do a pretty good job with the IP.

Of these choices, I like Camelot, Alpha Dream, Next Level, Retro, and Capcom. All of them have done games similar in scope and visual style to the AWs, and I think they could nail the quirky sensibilities of the series (especially I'd say AlphaDream and the two Western studios).

This is a weird one, but don't you think Double Fine could also do a good job? They have a semblance of familiarity with the genre due to Brutal Legend, although they might be too Tim Burton-esque for this series.

I actually wasn't aware who Double Fine was until I researched them. Apparently, they're owned by Microsoft which could make things tricky even despite the growing relationship between Nintendo & Microsoft.

But hey, let's not forget the time Advance Wars already went Tim Button on us *cough DoR cough*

That aside, Monilith & Alpha Dream are my favorites on the 1st/2nd party side to handle Advance Wars while Capcom would be my ideal choice on the 3rd party front.

My only concern is that Advance Wars doesn't go the way of Golden Sun in that the studio chooses to do Mario Spinoffs or whatever series and keeps the franchise dormant for a long time. The idea here is a new studio bringing back the franchise to levels never seen before.

The ones who I have faith in most to do this are Monolith and Capcom, more so the latter if it means having an "Ace Attorney" feel to it.

Between sports, Golden Sun, and maybe some of their older RPG franchises, I don't think AW could fit on Camelot's schedule. They just have too much going on for their size. I think Monolith could make it work though.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I should have been more clear. What I was trying to ask was, due to Smash Ultimate having this... I guess, 'ideology' that ALL FS attacks must be more streamlined and 'to the point' (which has resulted in things like Giga Bowser, Super Sonic, Giga Mac, and Wario-Man no longer being controllable like playable characters, Fox, Falco, and Wolf retiring their Landmasters, etc.), does anyone have any idea as to what kind of FS Andy could use, that keeps in line with Smash Ultimate's take on FS attacks, while still keeping to the 'spirit' of the Wars games and what Andy can do?

Just to be clear, I actually wasn't suggesting his FS be him switching out between what I mentioned in my last post. I was just asking which one of those do you all think would work as Andy's FS in Smash Ultimate (which, again, seems to want FS attacks that are 'to the point').

Double Fine did recently get bought by Microsoft, so it would be a pipe dream. Though Psychonauts 2 will still be multiplat, so who knows...

Monolith... I dunno, I think they might have too much on their plate. Have they any experience with strategy games?

I don't believe so but like I said, Advance Wars isn't too far off from being an RPG and given Nintendo's "AW needs character relationships to succeed" thing, it would get even closer to that kind of game. Of course, balancing that with Xenoblade might be a challenge but like, they're a really big studio that could diversify having a different genre that's not too far off from what they usually do. Maybe get some staff from IntSys in an advisory role to aid in development and they're good.

Basically, anyone that wants to bring this franchise back lol. But preferably the ones I mentioned.

I see.

I think the Megatank works best because it's fast & furious, the criteria Sakurai mentioned. Andy would summon a Megatank (controlled by Max) and he would go trigger happy immediately on all foes on stage, blasting everyone to smithereens.

One could easily argue for an Air Assault as the FS but maybe that would require too many things happening with all the air units, thus causing some lag on the undocked version.

I have a bit of a... controversial idea. Of the Nintendo studios you mentioned, only two of them are actually owned by Nintendo (Monolith and Retro). All the others (including IS, for that matter) are only affiliated with Nintendo, though no one would blame you for thinking otherwise.

So... what if Nintendo just bought out Intelligent Systems?

Hear me out. I know this isn't directly related, but apparently, the way Microsoft handles the studios they buy is "as long as it's on a platform we support, you can make whatever game you want within reason". I'm thinking Nintendo should try that, as a few of these studios desperately need the extra manpower. Want to know why Camelot only makes Mario Sports games? Because they're not the company they used to be. Nintendo could buy them, and (theoretically, I don't know the specifics of this business) give them the much-needed boost to make Golden Sun 4 a reality.

Now I know the topic of companies buying each other out is hotly debated at the moment, and that Nintendo doesn't normally do that sort of thing, but I genuinely believe it would work out in the long run.

I mean, I almost figured that IntSys was really close to being a 1st party series already with the amount of Nintendo employees that have worked on Advance Wars. And of course, WarioWare being co-developed by Nintendo in-house.

If buying out IntSys and making them a 1st party studio proper is what it'll take to bring back Advance Wars, then i'm all for it! Count me in on that haha.

And yeah, I think Nintendo should buy Camelot outright so they'll have the capital needed for Golden Sun 4. I believe that's what Rare wanted towards the end of their time working with Nintendo, hoping they would buy 51% of their company but Nintendo never did that hence the Microsoft buyout.

Yeah I think that would definitely help Camelot a lot, and with IntSys it might be enough for them to be able to make Advance Wars again too. Does Nintendo own any amount of these studios or are they just affiliated through their IPs?

I couldn't find anything on them being owned in any capacity, so either they're just affiliates, or I'm not looking in the right places.

Intelligent Systems appears to be an independent company, though their original HQ was in a Nintendo building, they were created upon request of Nintendo and every game they've made is owned by Nintendo.

Camelot is fully independent, but the last game they've made without Nintendo's involvement came out in 2007.

They're second-party studio's by name but they might as well be first party given that they make games exclusively for Nintendo platforms. I'm not sure if that's exactly how it would go down but if a buyout of IntSys/Camelot lead to the return of both AW & GS then I want to see it happen, regardless of how unlikely that is.

I actually had no idea IntSys used to be located in Nintendo's building. And for that matter, I thought IntSys was Nintendo-owned outright given that they collaborate with Nintendo in-house so much on most of their projects.
I'd like Andy to get in if he summons full-sized units.
I think full-sized units might be too much to program for Andy but like, I would really like it if they used the sprites from the battle animation instead of the overworld ones used as the Assist Trophy in Brawl/Smash 4. It wouldn't look out of place at all and looks aesthetically better than the AT units or creating new designs for the units instead.

Also can I add you to the support list?

I want it to be a ****ing warzone with tanks and air strikes.

I haven't decided yet. My name on your list might tip the scales to Andy getting in over Skull Kid.

I'll be honest, I'm surprised you guys are so accepting of the idea of a buyout. Although, given the circumstances, this is probably your "whatever it takes" moment, huh? Still, at least I got to talk about it with SOMEBODY.

It's not like it would change a lot, but yeah if it means more of that great variety in IS' works, I'm for it.

At this juncture, Advance Wars fans would accept literally anything. Coming from experience.

Like I don't care if they deadass announced Advance Wars: Federation Force in the next Direct. I'll take literally anything that has to do with this series.

Yeah, IntSys might as well be a 1st party studio already. Nothing much would really change about them in the way their business model works. All it means is more capital which means a better possibility for Advance Wars,

Be careful what you wish for. Advance Wars: Federation Force might as well be called Advance Wars Zip-Lash with how quickly that would kill the franchise for good. Dormancy is better than that.

So you guys might have heard already about the Joint Commission for Andy being done by NinNakajima. I can confirm the commission has been paid for in full and we can expect to see Andy done in his unique artstyle! I'm really excited about this as i'm sure a lot of you are to see our favorite whiz kid brought to life and have a lot of eyeballs on Operation Warzone!

Want to give major props to THE 6r THE 6r SorrowOfAcheron SorrowOfAcheron C chocolatejr9 P47 P47 and two other Discord users for helping make this happen. You guys are the best!

I was just speaking to how desperate a lot of AW fans (myself included) are for anything for this franchise. So much so that I would actually pop-off for a Federation Force-esque spin-off because i'm that desperate for anything haha.

although that is kinda what Battalion Wars was no?

In any case, I want the series to return sooner rather than later. And I feel there's a decent chance IntSys might revisit this series taking in to account some things.

Nah, those points are easily refutable when IS already did another strategy game (Codename STEAM).
There're easier "points" like the fanservice they do in their last Fire Emblem games (apart from TH, but that one it has done by Koei basically lol) or the relationship mechanic problem that was mentioned by some producer.

The big problem I have with this situation is Nintendo never does that. I mean, they never give a "second party IP" to another company in order to do a new game. Only exceptions are Glory of Heracles, which Nintendo bought the IP and give it to PAON to do a new game, and Famicom Tentei Club, that apparently was done by Tose and now another company does the remake (and TOSE is special, so I wouldn't count it tbf)
So, probably in their contracts are restricted to the company in question, despite the fact that Nintendo has the IP.
But, anyways, I would add some things:
Monolith Soft already has experience in strategy games. They did Project X Zone (and its sequel), so it would be nice. There was one studio from Monolith which wanted to do a new game by themselves (they only help in game developments and assist them).
Also, I would add NST. Despite being low-profile in those years since the Project HAMMER fiasco, it seems they are gaining the confidence again and now they handle ports and expansions (like Mario Maker 3ds, Captain Toad switch and SnipperClips Plus), and it would cater the west audience.

I would definitely add Koei Tecmo. They were the responsible of Pokémon Conquest (apart from FE:TH), are the responsible of Romance of Three Kingdoms saga (AFAIK it's a strategy game) and they have a lot of manpower. Maybe the graphics wouldn't be top, but they could give an interest point of view regarding the plot and mechanics.

So... what if Nintendo just bought out Intelligent Systems?

Hear me out. Basically, IS already does whatever they want xD
They're like brother's company with Nintendo and, despite being a third studio party, they even share the same street. All their managers are linked to Nintendo also.
Besides, the fact some independent studios which work with Nintendo aren't bought it's because Nintendo would push them to do the things Nintendo want, unlike Microsoft. That's the reason why Camelot wasn't bought, for example, because Camelot wanted their independence and was open to work with other studios (and, well, that was the cause of its debacle). HAL is another example, because HAL value its hardware division (HAL even helped with Switch IIRC).
And being first party doesn't mean they can work whatever they want. There was a Monolith employee (I think it was the president, but could be a producer) that expressed this year Nintendo didn't let them to do anything besides Xenoblade, because Nintendo wasn't sure of the success.

Yeah I think that would definitely help Camelot a lot, and with IntSys it might be enough for them to be able to make Advance Wars again too. Does Nintendo own any amount of these studios or are they just affiliated through their IPs?
Maybe Nintendo has some stakes of some of them, but in the end they're 3rd parties that only work with Nintendo.

I just wanted to say that Codename STEAM is kind of a different genre than the top-down, turn based strategy one AW and FE are. Of course, AW is purely-tactical compared to FE's RPG mechanics so it has enough to make itself different. All it needs to come back, at least according to Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami is it for to have relationship mechanics or whatever. Using 3H's engine, I think they might finally be able to get around this reservation by having the CO fight alongside the units or maybe even multiple CO's I think. Or even like, a military academy setting where nations form strategic alliances and all. I know 3H kind of has this gimmick but this was an idea I had before 3H was a thing. And it would be more visually distinct with the emphasis on forming strong ties with nations and CO's having stronger ties with another as a result.

Also, Nintendo has lent the Wars series to plenty of other developers before. They let Hudson Soft do the Game Boy Wars games and Kuju Entertainment do the Battalion Wars games. I don't doubt they would be completely opposed to letting another dev studio take on the series with some key staff from IntSys assisting. Like a Capcom-developed Advance Wars for instance. That would be incredible!

I've had a few stage ideas of my own.

1: Headquarters
I know, it'd probably feel like a New Donk City re-tread. But what if the stage was set at an Orange Star headquarters? It's a weird idea, and perhaps even gives rise to possible CO cameos from the windows (like Green Hill).

2: Black Factory
This stage takes place near a Black Factory with Piperunners patrolling the perimeter. The piperunners occasionally fire upon the fighters. Also, units will be produced from the factory at regular intervals.

3: Great Owl
I know this veers into Days of Ruin territory, which fits Andy by 0%. But hear me out- if an entire mission can take place on board one wing of the Great Owl, so can a game of Smash. Of course, the problems come when the fans declare it to just be a second Corneria...
