Online Ladder/Tournament System

Hi guys, new smash fan here... but not new to eSports what-so-ever. I have been playing competitive COD for years and I have a certain respect for all games that are played at a highly competitive level. My question is, now that online play through dolphin is a thing, is it possible that we could play smash online at a competitive level?

I have connections with people that host [legit] ladder and tournament websites and I would love to be able to pitch the idea of smash to them, seeing as how it hasn't been done before (to my knowledge). I want to know if the support would be there, and if enough people would be interested in something like this? Let me know what you guys think!

I would love to participate in this kind of thing, the main issue I would think about though would be connection speeds. Though short distance connections are excellent, I almost always have significant lag at peak times when playing with a friend in Tennessee (I'm in Washington). Perhaps that's not an issue for everyone but it would be something you'd have to consider. I come from the Starcraft eSports scene, and I'd love to see weekly tournaments online like they have for that.
