I was looking at the translated Japanese page with character info and it starts to talk about alternate colors:

I obviously must be missinterpreting this, It cant be right, because it also says something about Wario, meaning it cant be a costume. Anybody know japanese?

Mario has a green shirted alternate color scheme - just like he has a purple and yellow one. The fact that it says Luigi is just pointing out that it's similar to Luigi, much like the yellow and purple are similar to Wario.
