What is Peanuts?

I am sure pretty much just about everyone is familiar with the Peanuts franchise. But, here’s a good explanation/overview of the franchise.

Peanuts is one of the longest running comic strip series in the world. It is yet said one of the most popular and influential in the art. The comic strips were illustrated and written by Charles Schulz and the strips were written from 1950 to 2000. There were over 17,000 strips penned, thus making the Peanuts comic strips one of the longest stories to be ever told by a human. Also, the series helped cement the standard of the four-panel gag strip in the United States. The world focuses around a group of children known as the Peanuts gang where adults exists but are never seen nor heard. The leader of the gang is Charlie Brown who is the “lovable loser”. Snoopy is the mascot of the brand technically and is a Beagle dog who loves his owner. I really do not need to give much intro to the characters as they are all super iconic.

Alongside the comic strips, there have been multiple seasonal specials run on TV which have received Emmy awards and have been broadcasted for over 50 years. Alas now, Apple TV+ currently owns a good chunk of the streaming rights to the Peanuts specials. However, they have occasionally reran on PBS/PBS Kids in 2020. Alongside that, there have been many TV series including one that was on Cartoon Network in 2016 in the United States (2014 in France). The 2016 Peanuts series is streaming on HBO Max as well. There’s also the 2015 movie that was animated by BlueSky Studios and distributed by 20th Century Fox (now the 2015 Peanuts movie is owned by Disney). The brand has also received theater plays based off of the comics/tv specials and even a good chunk of video games on top of that.

Looking at the bigger picture, Peanuts is a MASSIVE multimedia brand. They had partnerships with Hallmark, Target, Dorney Park, Knott’s Berry Farm, Universal Studios Japan, Metlife (Snoopy was the mascot for a time), etc. They are EVERYWHERE.

Wait, what is the relationship between Peanuts and Warner Bros?

Alright, the rights to the Peanuts brand and who owns what is a bit of a rollercoaster. The rights across several of the components of the franchise are scattered. I’m just going to break this down into concise bullet points. These are the rights as of current and who owns what.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanuts_animated_specials The Wikipedia article for said info.

  • WildBrain Distribution and Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution have the current streaming and home media rights alongside Apple.
  • PBS has the rights to certain specials.
  • Viacom still has the rights to the Paramount distributed films and the films appear on the Paramount+ service.
  • Disney owns the 2015 Peanuts movie because of their acquisition of 20th Century Fox and distribute said movie on Disney+.
  • The Schultz family owns rights to the comic strips and Sony Music owns rights to the soundtrack.
  • GoNoodle also owns somewhat of the brand for their educational content based around the franchise.
Beyond the info, Warner Bros has had a strong relationship with the brand. In October 2007, Warner Bros acquired the catalog of Peanuts specials from Paramount. They still kind of hold (used to own all) of the worldwide distribution for Peanuts. They distributed the specials on home video, distributed direct-to-video films on the now-defunct Warner Premiere, had a series on Cartoon Network, etc. I consider this a very strong partnership, indeed.

Also, on the official Warner Bros. Instagram page, this was posted on December 11th, 2021. Interesting, huh?

Why should there be Peanuts representation in MultiVersus?

The franchise is HUGE. It is super well-known around the world. Given Peanuts was one of the biggest subsidiaries Warner Bros had a full stake in, Peanuts deserves to be in the game in some form. Yes, the dev team has confirmed for characters with not so strong connections to Warner Bros eligible for this game. This game could be the official licensed MUGEN. Considering everything else, the connection between Warner Bros. and Peanuts is not far fetched at all. There’s a strong connection between them.

On top of that, I also want to see a Snoopy and Scooby-Doo crossover. An official crossover, that is.

What could the franchise bring to the table?

Personally, for a fighter, there are a few possibilities.

First, there is Snoopy. He can have some move potential such as biting, using Woodstock for recovery, even incorporating his “Flying Ace” personality, etc. There’s also endless potential for alts such as his “Flying Ace” costume, his showman outfit, etc. He would be a bruiser most likely.

There’s also Charlie Brown himself which can have him try to kick footballs and be a low tier due to him being the lovable loser he is in Peanuts. He can be a bruiser too but it's hard to craft a moveset for him. He would require some creativity.

Snoopy and Charlie Brown can be a tag team as well but I see Snoopy being the most likely due to him being the mascot and face of the brand.

For the stage, I could see it being definitely the backyard where Snoopy’s doghouse is. It could be a walk off stage with the members of the Peanuts gang in the back watching. It could be a simple stage with a lot of cameos. Maybe there could be season variations to represent the holiday animated specials as well. Or it could be the iconic wall in the specials as well.

For music, there’s lots of smooth music. Maybe a possible remix of the “Linus and Lucy” theme in the game. Peanuts has a wide arrange of music to be used.

Overall, the Peanuts brand deserves something in MultiVersus. The brand is iconic, has had a good relationship with Warner Bros, would probably break the internet, etc. Be sure to support any form of Peanuts content here. Also, do not be afraid to discuss any other Peanuts related content here as well!

Well if NASB can get Garfield, anything is possible.

It'd most likely be Snoopy. He has his various personas and has gotten into more scraps than any other character in the franchise. Charlie Brown would be kind of unfitting, being such a non-violent character, so Snoopy would make the most sense.
