"A place for serious discussion about competitive Melee in Oregon. This group is primarily for coordinating events, carpools, hangouts, and discussing the current metagame. "

10 things I hate about you
one of my favorite movies

10 things I would tell a new Oregon tournament or smash attendee-dawg
  1. We have a weekly. Every Sunday in Milwaukee. Weeklies are excellent for developing new players, which is one of the reasons our scene is the way it is.
  2. Oregon Smash is huge. We have a huge player pool of competitive to casual in all skill levels in all games
  3. We are friendly as hell, down to have a good time, like meeting new people, don't be scurred
  4. Regardless of where you live in Oregon, what game you play, what kind of person you are and the things you like - there is a group of friends for you to play whatever Smash game under whatever conditions you want here.
  5. When you go to your first tournament, you will benefit strongly from being outgoing, confident and assertive. -Make friends, call next in rotations, get games played. A lot of us are really into getting new players in, but sometimes no one will take initiative in initiating you. This may mean you smell bad, but odds are it means we were all just focused on having a good time ourselves or busy 420 blazing it, so taking initiative is the only way you can get rid of that variable and for sure make your first tournament as worth while as it could be.
  6. If you want to improve, replicating tournament duress and playing under that is the quickest way to improve. Don't just money match everyone because it will lose its value, but don't be terrified of playing for stakes. I always play for stakes in my head, which has made me play kind of dumb because now I'm totally jaded to most forms of competing, I'm no longer used to having nerves, and when I have nerves I suck really bad cuz im not used to it. ANYWAY
  7. We have a lot of very analytical players. A lot of us coach eachother, I give lessons, other people have given lessons, but advice never costs money. Talk about the game.
  8. One of the most important aspects to improvement I can suggest to anyone is to form absolute accountability - Any time you want to say "My controller is bad omg" just think of your favorite anime character, and what they would do if they didn't have a perfect controller. Consider the weaknesses of your controller, how that will impact your thought->results flow, and adjust accordingly. IE: I don't own a controller right now, if I am using one that can't shield drop or am on a setup that can't shield drop - I just consider platforms far less favorable and switch it up accordingly instead of getting frustrated every time I miss a shield drop (OMG I WOULD HAVE KILLED U IF I HAD MY SWORD" Don't just be a defeatist punk, never give up. The only variables you can inalienably always address is you. Your psychology, your gameplay, your basal ganglia, etc. Also technical errors are your fault. Everything is something you can take as a piece of information to improve. This isn't quite "no johns," it's more "john, silently, in your head, but convert it into causality and figure out how to use it to make you win more"
  9. If you respect the community and put in effort and resources, you will experience infinite return. We take care of each other very well.
  10. Most people don't care if you're bad. Skill gaps don't remove fun or practice. Some people are douchebags, for sure. Ignore them. Come find me and play me. Anyone who acts too good for anything will never be good at anything. There are certain ways you should practice in certain skill-gap scenarios. IE if you're just starting the game competitively and have to play like M2K or something - most of what you'll be doing is getting hit. But that's an amazing situation to just hard practice Smash DI. Every time you get hit, you should be SmashDIing, so if you're just getting death touched every stock 1) It's cuz your DI so 2) Practice smash DIing every hit while you're getting ****ed up so you can start that habit.
  11. Do everything plus ultra muthr frikr
  12. It says im 5th on the pr but i'll be 1 by january
  13. We have a SICK PM scene. and Smash4. And we're all gonna go pretty ham at Smash5. so join along for the ride (64 whatever) we all play hella other games too obv

Why I decided to remake an Oregon thread:
______________

Came to check if we had some untapped scene on Smashboards while I've been on doing Wii modding research for our house tournaments, since i been doing some prepwork
My back burnered stockpot of Melee juice is finally coming to a boil, so I'm actually putting some work in now that time is starting to be on my side.

There were indeed some posts from new players in Oregon that tried looking here (they may or may not have found intel and straight up just go to tournaments and are in the scene now, but that's numbers we're not catering to by not having a thread here)
also tired of Facebook and kind of remembering the appeal of the rest of the internet
long live smashboards
We use Facebook in Oregon for a lot of event organization alongside Smash.GG, and now smashboards too, why not

Official Oregon Melee Group is the best place to start. From here you can find any sub-group, such as
Hell right here, or
or groups like our Portland subgroup
https://smashboards.com/threads/sal...ys-smash-4-project-m-and-melee-weekly.417109/ Info on Salem's weeklies for all 3 games
that i literally just actually read about and am interested in sik

Directly ripped from our FB group at the top. I'll probably let all of these links become invalid, but if you join the facebook page
We have a post stickied with all of the stuff below

Hey so I was thinking about getting into the competitive scene and to learn more about Smash, my primary game right now is ultimate, since I basically suck at every other game. Are there any weekly tournaments in the Portland Metro Area for Smash Ultimate??

Hey! I'm looking for any Smash Ultimate games or tournaments in Portland. I'm seeing tons of events that are kind of near, like Salem or Seattle. But for someone who uses mass transit, these nearby cities can be literal hours away for me. And I'm seeing Portland Melee games. But no Portland Ultimate games.

So, is there anything Smash Ultimate going on in Portland? The user above me mentioned looking for a similar thing, so there's at least 1 person.

Glad to see there are some people looking for events. Sadly I can't host for I have no console,
but I can fill a room more so with my being there than with chips soda or console.
I am the party. Let me SMASH IN PORTLAND SOMEONE!
