What is Obstagoon?
pokemon_obstagoon_2x.png

Obstagoon is a Pokémon that is set to appear in the upcoming games Pokémon Sword and Shield. It is a dark and normal type, and the evolved form of galarian linoone. It is known as the blocking Pokémon.

Why should this thing be in Smash?
Obstagoon is the first cross generational evolution (a pokemon evolution that is gained in a generation after the base pokemon is revealed in) bar the eeveelutions, to appear in more than a decade, since Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, in 2008. It is also the first pokemon to evolve specifically from a regional variant, a first, since they were added in Pokémon Sun and Moon.

Moveset
Jab: Swipes with its claws
Forward Tilt: Night Slash, slashes forward. Deals darkness damage.
Down Tilt: Quick kick forward with foot.
Up Tilt: Quick Slash upwards
Forward Smash: Cross Chop, basically X-Scissor from the anime but harder and with fists.
Down Smash: Snarl, Creates a dark shockwave beneath it after howling towards the ground.
Up Smash: Punches upwards. As the chance of being Fire Ice or Thunder punch.
Neutral Aerial: Icy Wind, Creates a miniature snowstorm around it. Does ice damage.
Forward Air: Cross Poison, Slashes forward twice. Deals poison damage.
Back Air: Revenge, a quick punch backwards. Does more damage if at a high percent.
Up Air: A kick upwards.
Down Air: Giga Impact, Slams downwards at a fast velocity. Does recoil.
Neutral Special: Dark Pulse, stamps it's foot down and uses dark pulse DS game style.
Side Special: Sand Attack, Obstagoon picks up sand from the battlefield and tosses it at the foe, reversing controls for a brief time.
Up Special: Double Edge, Obstagoon powers up and launches upwards. If used on an opponent, it does major damage and knockback. It also does recoil damage.
Down Special: Obstruct, Obstagoon will put it's arms in front of it, if a projectile hits it, it will negate the projectile. If a pysical attack hits it, it will swipe back, and the opponent will take more damage from a hit after.
Final Smash: Charges forwards. If it connects, it will send the opponent to a combo in a rock n roll stadium. The stadium suddenly turns dark and Obstagoon slashes the foe upwards, sending them into an onslaught of Galarian Zigzagoon and Linoone. (with a few normal ones too) Obstagoon then lands the finishing blow and launches them away as the crowd cheers.
Up Taunt: Sticks out it's tounge.
Down Taunt: Obstagoon laughs.
Side Taunt: Sticks out it's finger and makes a "Come towards me" gesture.

Do you support Obstagoon in Smash?

Could be interesting his move pool in the games consists of more interesting stuff than most rodent pokemon. It's just that my problem with it is that the design for him seems a bit janky, mostly just the head and how big it is.

I could also easily seeing this be a heavy, which the only one from Pokemon we have for that is Charizard. I support. (also it'd be kinda funny if he made it in because he is 4x weak to fighting moves)

This is actually the first Pokemon since Gen 3 that's got me even slightly excited. That's actually pretty nuts. Between him and Weezing's British form I'm now on board with Sword and Shield again.

Linoone getting an evolution, much less based on my FAVOURITE ANIMAL set in my Pokemon region equivalent is too perfect.

Obstagoon currently seems to be a character that uses a lot of counters so he may have a small overlap with Incineroar, but god damn look at this taunting, defensive, mocking badger.

I adore him.

Yep, English here. Don't hold that against me though!

Obstagoon interestingly has had Linoone retconned and his Galar line is referred to as the original of the species, making it the second Pokemon ever to be retconned as the original look(Aloan Exeggutor being the first) with a previous form being the subspecies.

He's also the first form exclusive evolution we've ever recieved...I'm interested in seeing his stats since Hoenn's Linoone was one of the few 'Rattata tier' Pokemon who seemed surprisingly powerful for such a common mon.

Definitely supporting this thread. Obstagoon is my now favorite pokemon, who evolved from a regional variant of my former favorite pokemon, who was based on my favorite animal. This thread gets my 100% support.

oh i couldnt hold such a thing against a fellow toad fan, also i get what you were saying about your favourite animal cause mine's in sword a shield too (though there aint a whole lot of scotland)

i think the exeggutor thing was that alolans considered this its true form rather than the original

but anyway itll be interesting to see whats in store for obstagoon, willing to bet the leader of team yell will have one, and to see what other galar forms have new evolution (ive heard a rumour for one) and if any of them have a new unevolved form

If Sakurai WERE to make another smash game after ultimate. . .

This would be a good idea to include this pokemon;

That being said however, I don't think right now is quite the best time to include it; when he's already planned out every fighter for SSBU, Including DLC. . .

I can actually see Obstagoon making the cut for Pokken 2 if we ever get a sequel.

On the topic of Obstagoon and Smash: if you were to redesign the Pokemon side of the roster, who would you have?

Presuming the roster from the original game are all veterans and stay in the game I'd also want to include these guys:

Gen 1
Meowth: Team Rocket's to be precise. A tricky fighter he fights using traps, tech, pitfalls and bombs. The least Pokemony fighter. Synergy burst is a HUGE Meowth mech which is slow moving but hits like a truck. Also has a rocket punch in this form.
Eevee: Upgrading Eevee to playable, Eevee is on the verge of evolving into any of it's various evolutions. It uses attacks from each, momentarily evolving before cancelling the evolution. Synergy Burst makes it temporarily evolve and flip between the various evolutions rapidly dealing random elemental damage with each attack.
Snorlax: A big sumo style character. Hariyama could fill this niche but Snorlax is infinitely more popular.
Alakazam: Strong teleport game and hits like a truck. However he is incredibly frail. Synergy Burst Mega evolves him.
Ditto: Transforms in battle into one of the other Pokemon to perform moves. Pokemon always keep the Ditto face. Synergy Burst turns it into Mew.

Gen 2
Chikorita: Long range specialist with lots of long grabs and a small hitbox. Somewhat defensive but at a huge disadvantage up close.
Qwilava: Much like fogbadge, I just think it's the coolest of the line. Can roll into a fire wheel to attack.
Feraligatr: Pure power Pokemon. Hits like a truck, can take a pounding, but a slower Pokemon in the same style of Machamp
Wobbuffet: A pure counter Pokemon. Can perform grabs as well, but aside from that relies on using the opponents attacks to their advantage.
Miltank: The Pokemon that made everyone cry at Whitney's Gym returns. Synergy Burst heals her.

Gen 3
Ludicolo:
Rhythm fighter. Focuses on combos and flow. Synergy Burst plays Mirror B.'s theme tune.
Shiftry: Tricky fighter; uses doubles and has a wind box to keep opponents at a distance and trapped.
Breloom: Kind of like Springman, Breloom has many long range punch combos.
Kecleon: Using the same attack against it over and over will make it take less damage with each consecutive attack. Anti button bash pick. Synergy Burst makes them invisible.

Gen 4
Lopunny: Rushdown fighter, incredibly speedy. Synergy Burst Mega evolves her.
Monferno: A rushdown grappler of sorts. Hits fast and hits often. Somewhat frail.

I'd go on, but running low on time at current! Needless to say Obstagoon is my first pick for Gen 8.

Obstagoon's main gimmick is that it counter attacks. I think enough fighters in smash have counter attacks already.

Well, I'm gonna make a moveset once more is known on Obstagoon. Besides, no fighters main gimmick is its counter. It's just a single move, besides, a counter orientated character wouldn't really work well to be honest. So I'm making him sort of like a reckless fighter, having some good attack.

Honestly, I really don't think Obstruct should be a counter now that the actual game's out and we know what the hell it can do. It just simply does not work like that, and besides, I think we have too many simple counters, or just counters in general, in terms of Pokémon.

Instead, I propose this:

DOWN SPECIAL- OBSTRUCT: Obstagoon crosses his arms infront of him while performing a loud shout. If nothing hits him during this time, Obstagoon will just let out a sly grin as he goes back into his fighting stance. If a projectile hits Obstagoon while he's in this stance, he will block it, negating the projectile. However, the real fun part happens if a character attacks them with a physical attack, like a tilt or smash attack. Obstagoon will push the foe back, negating their attack and having a strange blue glow surround them. This will signify that their defense is down, allowing Obstagoon to deal more damage with every attack of his. The best way I can describe it in terms of gameplay is some sort of strange reversal of Incineroar's down b.

Guess i'll add this to the op
Edit;
Finished moveset, and found Obstagoon's dex entries.
Sword: Its voice is staggering in volume. Obstagoon has a tendency to take on a threatening posture and shout—this move is known as Obstruct.
Shield: It evolved after experiencing numerous fights. While crossing its arms, it lets out a shout that would make any opponent flinch.
