Yesterday, gamers were surprised and excited by the surprise announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show where Sony announced their partnership with Nintendo to work on a CD-ROM addon for Nintendo's Super Nes game system. Promising amazing memory usage (up to 64bit!) people are expecting great things. As well as the addon, Sony announced that they plan on making a revamped Snes console with the CD-ROM already attached, nick-named 'Play Station.'
However if you thought that was a dramatic announcement, today was a full on Soap Opera. Today at Nintendo's conference they managed to cause a fair amount of confusion when they surprisingly announced that they've partnered with Phillips, Sony's main competitor. When asked about Sony's announcement yesterday, Nintendo of America president Minoru Arakawa replied with "Sony's a great company and while we look forward to working with them, there are some conditions of our collaboration that we are still working out. We are certainly not saying that we are not working with Sony, but we think that Phillips has some great ideas that we would love to work with into future products."
Whther it's Sony or Phillips (or possibly both? Phillips and Sony did team up to create the CD in the first place) it means exciting things for us gamers. Imagine the depth, gameplay and graphics a CD-ROM powered system would bring. We've seen new previews of Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past the last two days and it looks amazing. Imagine what a CD-ROM could do to that! Dare I even think of finally hearing Link converse with the people he meets on his travels? The future looks bright!
