Nintendo Partner Company Characters

I'd really love to see some Golden Sun, Skies of Arcadia, Tales of Symphonia, and other RPG characters in Brawl. Seems more likely now than ever that the game might include characters from companies with histories of partnering with Nintendo.

What are some other RPG characters people would like to see included? If Fire Emblem made the cut, why do these other options seem less feasible?

Wait, Skies of Arcadia is by Sega, and Tales is by Namco, both of which are third party companies. As for second party, the only major one you really have left is Monolith who could get someone from Baten Kaitos.

Fire Emblem characters are first party, which is why it's easier for them to make the cut.

Nintendo own Tales franchise though just like Golden Sun and Skies of Arcadia right. They bought the rights when they saw it was a success i'm sure. So this stops the third party companies from selling them outside Nintendo.

Not even close. Nintendo owns Golden Sun, and always has - they did not buy the series after the fact. They do not own the Tales series or Skies of Arcadia, which as has been said are owned by Namco and Sega.

Two of them are third-party, all of them lack Fire Emblem's history with Nintendo and popularity (especially compared to other third-party franchises for the two that have to worry about that). Golden Sun has a chance - perhaps only a slim one though, since compared to many other series it is rather obscure. The others really don't even have a shot.

Yeah, like everyone said, Tales is Namco and Skies is Sega. Skies was on the DC originally (and better), and the vast majority of the Tales games are on Playstation systems. I don't know where you heard Nintendo had the rights to those.

If Sega or Namco ownership is the preventative factor, how did sonic make the cut? Did nintendo buy the rights to Sonic or something? I realize sonic is a bigger character in general. Really what i was getting at was a more traditional rpg oriented group of character. I said partner companies because I meant pretty much anything that had been released on a Nintendo platform. I understand the rights issues, but smash is such a popular thing that it makes a certain kind of sense that it'd be a pretty good thing for any franchise.

The ownership is a factor because we know for a fact that we aren't getting many third-party characters. Sakurai gave a rough estimate of 2-3 in his journal, and we have two now. Even presuming the estimate was changed upward, theres really no way to argue more than 4 as realistic unless Brawl is much, much larger than anticipated. Snake got in because his creator is close friends with Sakurai and requested it way back when Melee was in development, plus hes a fairly popular character to boot. Sonic got in on his immense fan demand (Miyamoto and Sakurai both confirmed even long before Sonic was revealed that he was the single most requested character for Brawl). Other third-party characters aren't going to just get chosen at random - they need something big to recommend them.

Guys with popularity similar to Sonic's and a long history with Nintedo, such as Mega Man or Bomber Man, are at the top of the expectation list. Most other characters just don't have that kind of iconic status with the gaming community that would mean their presence helps sell the game, and games like Tales of Symphonia and Skies of Arcadia, which most people would see as randomly-selected RPGs, sure don't. When it comes to third-party characters, there are a handful with a chance of getting in (not even necessarily a good one, just a chance), and a lot with no chance. ToS and SoA characters are among the latter.

Too long? I have to disagree - ToS' length was wonderful, one of its better aspects. We need more games with that kind of length to them IMO.

ToS sequel for the Wii is Lloyd's only saving grace, but I don't even know if he's playable in that game.

ToS is not long. Extremely average length RPG. Actually, the game was average all around.
