Disclaimer: The Author, Lucas "Thirdkoopa" Guimaraes, received a free copy of the game, Yono and the Celestial Elephants, from the developer, Neckbolt, for review purposes.
Yono and the Celestial Elephants is a game made by developer Neckbolt about a young elephant named Yono who puts his trunk together to help people, solve puzzles, explore dungeons and take care of regula baddies. Yono features very similar gameplay to the Legend of Zelda series - Particularly that of the 2D games.
Upon playing it, the one element of the game that caught me off-guard is the emphasis on puzzle solving. At most times there aren’t many of enemies, but the amount of puzzles definitely makes up for that. Yono’s ability to shoot out water, deliver strong headbutts and carry items on his back work in conjunction for puzzle solving, making the players have to truly use every mechanic in Yono.
The story features elephants as mighty protectors, world peace is mostly intact. However, a mysterious outside force causes trouble for Yono and his friends. The game’s story is peppered with memorable dialogue - He can be described as naive, but his wits are intact.
The game is presented with a bright and cheery aesthetic. The models for Yono and the Celestial Elephants really bring the world to life. The soundtrack adds in a lot with it’s realistic soundscape. Even at the soundtrack’s most energy filled tracks, it’s still very low-key and relaxing.
