I am str4y, I have been playing brawl, and I feel I might like melee more. I understand it will take some time to get used to. The technique required to play is quite fascinating. It will be some time before I get the game up and running, but I would love to get into it! I am also unsure how to get more people involved since I am actually here in Idaho for college. Any advice would be welcome! :)

Nice, man. I'm starting out as well. I actually have been watching competitive Melee for over a year now, though. I recommend you doing that if you haven't all ready. After that, learn the basics like wavedashing, short hopping, fast falling, L-Cancelling etc.

I've been learning by myself, but you really should try to find another person who knows everything or a lot of things to help you.

Melee is a game that requires a drastic knowledge of how technical
you can be.If you are a more technical player you will want Fox,but if you are terrible at being technical you should play Jigglypuff since she just needs to know L-Cancel.Hungrybox admitted he wasn't technical so he just has a frustrating playstyle. If you want to be technical I suggest Fox/Falco,if you want a good grabber with combo tools and a decent recovery + decent wavedash I suggest sheik/Marth. Sheik is known for her combo game, while Marth is great vs Fast fallers. It's all about how technical you are with what style. There's a rank from fox to Jigglypuff.

Se7en thank you for the info! One of my mains is Shiek and I would love to get into her character. Fox/falco seem like they might be something i am interested in. Jiggly was one of my mains on 64, so I will have to see! Thanks again!

Keep in mind,Falco and fox are easy to combo.

Go to as many melee tournaments as you can. I'm relatively new to the competitive scene as well but from what I've experienced the tournament environment is the perfect place to learn. Expect to get rocked (4 stocked multiple times) though.

I suggest getting into a Brawl mod called Project M,it's a hack that changes brawl physics to melee physics with new stages, new characters, and it balances.

Check www.Projectmgame.com and go to downloads, all you need is a 2GB SD card and download the project m to the SD Card (there's offline set which has an ability to hit X to ban stages, while online is made for trading FC with other project m wifi players.
-on a side note, www.Allisbrawl.com has a modded brawl chat room for project m,and others.

Now back to the installing project m,it won't brick your wii and all you need to do is delete custom stages and go to stage builder, project m then takes over brawl. Now if you want to play brawl you can just turn off the wii and remove the SD card.

*all characters in project m are automatically there even if you didn't unlock them in brawl***
For example : let's say you don't unlock toon link in brawl,he will be in project m.

Well I personally like the exploits of melee better than Brawl being modded. I have respect for those who accomplished it, but I personally like being able to use what was already given to me. :) thank you for the info! I have heard of project m and how it works. It just isn't my thing :)

Project m is what all the melee players are moving too : mango, armada,PP,Hbox definitely moved to project m,and less experienced players in melee are top players in P:M although I support your decision.

Thank you for being respectful! I must say that I have been received here on the melee discussion board most warmly. I am wondering if the Brawl discussion board didn't see my post or if I have done something to insult them.

I highly doubt any of the top players (or most hardcore players in general) will ever drop Melee for PM. They might dabble in it a bit, but they won't just switch over. No way.

Hbox, PP, Armada, and Mango definitely did NOT move to Project: M.
They play it, sure.

PP thinks its unpolished and Falco feels weird.
Mango thinks its OK, but Melee is far better.
Armada, well, Armada just likes to wreck **** with Pit now that he retired from Melee (he only retired because the scene for Melee is not active near him)
Hbox likes P:M, but god DAYUM does that man love Melee.

Melee is the best way to start, Str4y. Once you are good at Melee, it's much easier to transition to P:M than it is to go the other way.

P:M is easier to short hop so he could get a hand of SHFFLing.I didn't mean they swapped over to it as in specialize in it but they do play.

P:M's not polished enough for most of them to play regularly. At the very least, out here in California nearly none of our top players play P:M even to a casual extent, and the only time you would ever see them play P:M is if one of our events had P:M (which usually doesn't happen cuz it seems like the Melee community and the P:M community run separate events).

Yeah, most Melee players play P:M in the sense that if they just pick up and play the game on tournament day, the game's similar enough that they'll do decently well.

That reminds me... I am looking for tournaments around Rexburg, ID, and I am not finding any at the moment. I looked at the list of facebook pages and the closest group is in Boise, 4 hours away... any thoughts?

I do have another question. What does everyone think of the internet adapter for the GC? Is it made well enough to play games online? or is it pretty lame?

Welcome to the scene, Str4y! I live in Rexburg, and have been actively playing Melee, Project M and Brawl. I played melee competitively in Central CA under a different name back in the day. I'd love to play sometime when you're available. Problem is I don't visit the smashboards often. I just happened to search Rexburg smash and found your post. Feel free to PM me or email me at bbqdpickles@gmail.com and we can play some time. I know at the Shake Out, they have tournaments every Tues. at 8pm (free entry, prize is free meal card).

Hey, I'm CrackerJack. I've recently taken a big interest in project M and melee and I would like to find some people to play with. I also live in rexburg. If you are at all interested send me a message at FlippensLast@gmail.com. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of experience in the game other than casually currently.
