Hey everyone! I just got done with college in NJ and have moved back to my parent's house in MD. I've played Smash pretty much all of my life but I've only been 'seriously' playing melee for about a month and a half. I'm looking to meet some other smashers near me to practice with and enter some tournaments to get some experience. If anyone feels like bodying a scrub sometime hit me up!

Well MD/VA is a stupid good region so you'll have good practice
Yeah I'm hoping that I can improve quickly once I meet some people. I'm just a bit intimated to go to any tournaments/ to meet people. I'm part of the MD/VA Facebook group and they all seem to know each other so it's kind of like showing up to a party you know no one at lol.

Welcome, dude.

I don't live in America but I definitely see where you're coming from and why you'd feel that way. I feel like Smashers in general are fairly accommodating so try not to feel intimidated. I do appreciate it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation so maybe try bringing a friend to an event but make an effort to mingle separately. That way it's not like you don't know anyone at all but you don't just fall back into an old social circle and could even get introduced to someone your friend meets.

If this isn't an option and you do decide to throw yourself into the deep end anyway, I'd say ask as many questions where appropriate e.g. who the top players are, what you could have done differently in said match, etc. It shows them you're committed and have taken interest in a community they and now you are a part of. At least that's how I see it as my local community is similar to what you've described.

Good luck!
