After being announced on relatively short notice, the March 8th, 2018 Nintendo Direct ended with an unexpected announcement.

The teaser starts with a short scene of a shootout between two inklings amidst a white void. As they're fighting, their surroundings go dark, and the inkling girl turns to see a bright, glowing object behind her. As the reflection in her eye comes into focus, we catch a glimpse of the object - a burning Smash Ball emblem.

After zooming out to see how enormous it truly is, we catch a glimpse of two more characters: Mario and Link, both of whom are rendered in silhouette, illuminated from behind by the flames. Notably, Link seems to be wearing the Champion equipment from Breath of the Wild, rather than the traditional Hero's Tunic.

After a fade to white, two bits of text are shown on the screen: a Super Smash Bros. logo, followed by the year 2018. The message is clear: a new Smash game will be released by the end of the year. It is currently unknown whether it'll be a new game entirely or a deluxe release of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U.

Smashboards will continue to provide coverage for this game as new information emerges.

I literally smiled like an idiot for minutes when it was announced. Don't know if it's a port or not but right now happy beyond belief can't wait for it. Also Inklings yeah boi!

I am just watching out for the Sm4sh situation where conflicting interests between vocal players, Melee players, and developers ripped the game apart.

I am not gonna take the "hype" bait.
At least Bandai Namco aren't going to f*ck things up

I run the idea that it's not so much Bandai Namco's fault as it is a very frustrated Sakurai. the vocal fanbase have been constantly crying out for his team to deliver on things, and he's been feeling a lot of pressure on placing focus on the competitive crowd as opposed to sticking to his guns.

Brawl was, as we all know, an attempt to appeal to newcomers... and we all know how that turned out. Smash 4 had some good ideas, but the fact that he was pressured so hard to place emphasis on the competitive crowd forced him to put more work on essentially shutting them up... again, we know how that turned out.

for discussion's sake, I think if there was one thing I would like to see happen differently, it would be the customization system as a whole getting a major overhaul. if you went through every fighter's (include third party) game history, the amount of characters with very little distinctive alternate abilities/attacks available you could probably count on one or two hands (Falcon among the first examples off the top of my head). Custom Equipment could allow for almost any kind of gameplay change, which could make it very possible to implement recreations of past games' physics, Melee and 64 in particular... I'd even go the extra mile and say that the best way to unlock them is through an Event Match challenge where you would face a marathon of AI opponents using entire equipment sets that completely recreate it whereas you won't have such sets until you beat it anyways.

imagine, the 64 physics set would mean for true L-cancelling and increased hitstun on all attacks you use, but in exchange, you also take extended hitstun upon getting hit. completing this on Hard would be kind of sadistic, but it does demonstrate how nasty 64's gameplay was beyond casual play... and then, defeat all the returning Melee top tiers with the Melee physics set, where they fall faster, and have normal L-cancelling, and can basically quick-step (wavedash out of range) instead of perfect shielding on occasion, and navigate the stage faster... but buffering attacks is reduced, so button mashing and maybe some setups gets heavily nerfed (which doesn't affect AI anyways). clearing this wouldn't be as bad, but it would pique a newcomer's curiosity in the concept.

Pretty hyped! Didn’t expect it so soon or this direct, let alone a 2018 release. It should be pretty good t see what happens with it.

Well I'm glad its not going to be a straight port of smash 4, but the fact that its coming so soon means its definitely going to be using a lot of assets from smash 4. Which sucks because I really don't like how smash 4 plays. I'm really hope a lot of the characters are heavily modified, but I assume most are going to be relatively the same.

Predictions:
- Ice Climbers return.
- 8 player smash requires 2 Switch consoles to play offline.

Wishful thinking:
-We are getting King K. Rool, Shovel Knight and Crash Bandicoot as playable characters.
-Lots of the anime boys with swords get cut.
-The game plays more like Melee and PM.

I knew that we would get another Smash game on the Switch, but I honestly didn't expect it to be revealed this early before E3. I agree with others that this Smash will be a new one, but since it's most likely coming out about only four years after Smash U/3DS and the gap between Brawl and Smash 4's release was longer, it will probably have a lot of reused assets to save time and focus on adding more content. I will be very excited to see what new characters and stages are added to the game.

Assuming this game is gonna be a new game and not just a port for some reasons that others have shared and also one other reason: If it was just an updated port like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, then wouldn't it make sense to keep Link's Twilight Princess/Skyward Sword design? But yet, we see that he's now rocking that Breath of the Wild look. This leads me to belive that Link is getting a substantial tweaking of some sort to reflect this, which suggests that this game is overall gonna be substantially reworked.

Another point of interest; HAL Laboratory, the company that produced 64, Melee, and Brawl, is credited at the end of the trailer despite not working on SSB4, suggesting they have returned for this next installment.

As others said, we'll probably be getting some big cuts should this be a new game. My guesses as to who's staying and who's leaving out of all the popularly contested characters may not be all that special, but dang it, I still want to share 'em:

-The clones have always been bullied and harassed, and they are the most common targets for cuts (ex: out of all 5 characters in Melee that didn't return to Brawl, only one of them (Mewtwo) wasn't a clone). In SSB4, there are three full moveset clones; Dr Mario, Lucina, and Dark Pit. Out of all three, the Doc is the most likely to return, being the full clone with the most differences from his source character and having also appeared in another Smash game, but I still wouldn't hold my breath. Unless something crazy happens, then Lucina and Dark Pit are most definitely outta here. Best case scenario is them appearing as Marth and Pit alternate costumes, respectively, but that's not all that likely either, especially in Dark Pit's case (as he was given his own slot partially to avoid conflicts with canon), and as much as I'd want to keep scoring disgusting Side-B kills with my boy Pittoo, I'll probably have to face reality.

-Wii Fit Trainer isn't likely to come back, for all the reasons VioletSmashFan explained and the fact that there are many current Nintendo characters that could easily fill in the gap left by her absence, so she'll probably be the first cut after the Lucina and Dark Pit. Aside from that, I'd also say Duck Hunt Dog would not return, seeing how he's done very little even after his Smash 4 appearance.

-Other veterans and SSB4 newcomers. I actually don't think any of the original 12 are going. Why? Well, my reasoning is pretty much the same as RelaxAlex's in his "What if Smash had only 30 characters" video (basically, just from appearing in all the Smash games thus far, they've become highly recognizable to Nintendo history as a whole. They've been there since the very start, through all the ups and downs of the series, they have been there to see it all). Now, who else could be going? Well, let's start with Pokemon, the franchise with the most cuts in the series. Well, I think Pikachu and Jigglypuff are definitely staying along with the rest of the Original 12, and Lucario's staying for sure. Mewtwo is highly popular and the fact he made it back as DLC at all after being cut really says a lot, so I think he's going to be fine. Greninja though..... well, he was added before he got popular, making him a rather lucky choice, and with the new games released in the gap between Smash installments, it's reasonable to suggest he's gonna be replaced in favor of one of the new pokemon.

-Onto the discussion of the Fire Emblem characters. Even Sakurai has stated that 6 Fire Emblem characters is too much, so he WILL be kicking some out. But who? Well, Lucina I've already explained above is probably outta here like last year, but who else? Marth is obviously staying, and Ike seems to be a mainstay now, so that leaves Roy, Robin, and Corrin. Roy is a bit more difficult to determine, but the fact that he made it back after being cut is impressive as hell, and similarly to Mewtwo, Sakurai probably wouldn't be making a smart decision by cutting him a second time, due to all the outrage it would cause. I don't want to jinx it, but I belive Roy's staying put. That just leaves Robin and Corrin. Sakurai put a LOT of heart and passion into both of these characters, so it's hard to imagine either of them getting cut so soon, but if a lot of space is needed, it's still possible that one or even both of them will get axed.

-On to third parties. Others have said this, and I agree; no third party character is a lock. Circumstances can always change. But surprisingly, I belive that not that many third parties are going, as most have some fair points in their favor and some reasons to stay. I feel it necessary to bring up Snake being cut from Brawl; his cut was likely due to the fact that in recent years, Konami's public image.... hasn't been the best. This hasn't been confirmed, but it's very likely why he's gone. Sonic is the most likely out of all of 'em to return, due to his popularity and the fact he's appeared in multiple Smash games already. Mega Man and Pac Man made it in SSB4 even though their series weren't doing a whole lot at the time, and due to their overall popularity (plus, Mega Man 11 being confirmed for the Blue Bomber), it's hard to imagine either of them getting cut, but it could still happen. Ryu on the other hand has few points in his favor, being an unusual addition to the roster (plus, even amongst Street Fighter developers, he seemed to not be the popular choice; (ex:Yoshinori Ono would have preferred M. Bison over Ryu), but the fact that he actually turned out to be a very well received character in Smash and his unique mechanics make his chances an arguable 50/50. On to Cloud Strife, the other non ballot third party DLC. I don't get why people think he's destined to never come back. Some say Cloud only got in 'cause of Sakurai's generosity, but it turned out that Sakurai actually asked Tetsuya Nomura first and not the other way around. Plus, Square Enix dosen't really have public image problems like Konami does, so they would be more willing to arrange for Cloud's return (I can't find anything related to it, but I could have sworn I heard that Tetsuya or someone else said they'd be open to Cloud appearing again) And finally Bayonetta.... hooh boy, Bayonetta. To those still sore over her total dominance soon after her release, I've got bad news. She probably won't be leaving. A: Like it or not, she still won the ballot, giving her a reason to be prioritized, B: Nintendo practically owns her nowadays, with Bayonetta 2 being funded by Nintendo, and unless I'm mistaken, I hear Bayonetta 3 is releasing exclusively on the Switch, and C: Platinum Games and Nintendo have a solid relationship, and Hideki himself has stated he's fully open to Bayonetta's return.

.....Damn, that was one long post.

...Not interested. I agree with a few other posters. There's nothing to get hyped about. Plus it's likely going to reuse a lot of assets from the fourth installment given how close it is. I don't like how Smash 4 plays. It still has a lot of questionable design like hitstun canceling on frame 40 with an air dodge (45 for an aerial), slow overall, no momentum carrying over, rage, lack of interactions overall, how easy it is to get back off stage, etc. I would hope it would play much closer to SSF2 at least, but given the last two games, I don't really have faith for Sakurai to deliver. :/

I feel part of the blame goes to the less-than-sane vocal chunk of the fanbase... they only really jumped on the bandwagon and never had the thought occur to them that what they're really riding is the marketing train. ever since the Switch was launched and people started accepting that the Wii U, beyond Smash 4, was basically abandoned... there has been an immediate call for Smash Bros to jump on the Switch almost immediately, repercussions and aftermath be damned.

it's nothing more than Smash 4's marketing of "What's Next?" being so firmly ingrained in this current group of players... and until someone steps in and forces some kind of intervention, these rabid newcomers are going to ruin it for all of us!

hey at least they're migrating to smash 5 instead of toxifying smash 4 further xd

crapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrap

I was really hoping that Bayonetta would die. Nintendo is meant to be for all ages, but things like CoD, ZombiU, and (of course) Bayonetta are slowly turning Nintendo into their adult-oriented competitors, Sony and Microsoft.
Solid Snake in Brawl was really my only complaint with the game (besides half the Subspace Emissary sucking butt), and when Smash 4 came out, I felt like it was a breath of fresh air. Not a single M-rated character. If a game I wanted had a character from the roster, I knew I was allowed to play it. (I've never played Melee, OK?)
The majority of DLC was like that, too, with characters from Pokémon, Earthbound, Fire Emblem, Street Fighter, and Final Fantasy.

Then...it happened.

Bayonetta happened. Winning #1 on the ballot (besides Shrek, Goku, Reckless Wii Warning Dude, and Ridley), she was picked to duke it out with the likes of Sonic and Kirby. Stupid internet, always looking to make some more porn...
M-rated characters should not be seen with Pikachu or Mario in anything made by Nintendo. If they need a gunner, they've got Doomguy. If it's gotta be a girl, there's Dark Samus.

Wait! I, your reader, don't understand. You said that M-rated characters shouldn't be in Smash Bros., yet you suggested Doomguy. Why are you suggesting something that shouldn't be in?
Simple. I wasn't specific enough.
Then what did you mean?
I meant M-rated games with constant swearing and/or drunkenness should never be allowed anywhere near a Smash game.
Why?
Because Nintendo should be for kids, and the characters in Super Smash Bros. reflect Nintendo's current status. Sure, there'll be a drop of blood here and there...in Earthbound and Zelda and maybe Metroid...
But those are all E10+ games. There are some E10+ rated games with curse words.
Shut the hell up about Shadow the Hedgehog.
Yeesh. Edgy.

(Kudos to anyone who gets this reference to a specific math book --- you sure know to take marshmallows out of your pocket in a car wash.)

you do realize that's not a good thing, right? I've yet to see Smash 4 show the same level of dedication and passion as the likes of Melee, and as it stands, it's bound to get worse in this new game until something is done about it.

I don't care if it was meant as a joke, I'd rather the majority of the toxicity either be neutralized or at the very least given a very harsh calling out in person.

When's the first Switch price drop? Used ones at GameStop are $275.

USED.
this is GAMESTOP you're mentioning... there's a lot of horror stories involving that chain that is probably too long to type here, just search "Gamestop Horror Stories" on Youtube and have at it, I heard from one channel lots of people migrated to Best Buy once they realized what was going on.

GameStop: The closest one is three cities away, the majority of the stuff there is video games, and there are great games from the last generation like Bioshock Infinite and Halo 4 for less than a 3DS copy of Super Mario World.
Best Buy: The closest one is ~5 cities away, there are way too many speakers, TVs, computers, and refrigerators, and "What's a used game?"

okay, fair enough, Best Buy doesn't do used games... although it IS an electronics store (thought not as specialized toward computers as Fry's), so of course there'd be more than just gaming related stuff there

but by the same token, Gamestop inflates the prices of much older games... which you'd be more likely to find at better prices on auction sites like eBay. I'm also kind curious as to what's actually in your Gamestop stores, because the ones I go to have a lot of those POP toys literally making up their own block section on the shelves, with some standard Hot Topic merch near the entrance, with games mostly in the back. I also still feel you should look up horror stories on the chain on youtube... both from former employees and managers as well as customers.

Sure, there's a lot of minifigs, and sure, people have had bad experiences, but there's a store ~10 cities away called "Nerdvana", and that's a good place to buy classic games.
