I only watched Game 1: AlphaZealot (Diddy Kong) vs OverSwarm (Meta Knight): Battlefield because I don't have much of an internet quota atm, Good stuff AZ.

Needs more tilts, but good stuff.

I fell apart as the time went on...

You will see me practically not grab/Dtilt (I don't usually D-tilt anyways)/U-tilt by the 5th game. You will also see me U-smash more then I should have because he switched to ROB and I didn't readjust when he switched back.

How are these traditional johns when AlphaZealot is at least owning up to the fact that it was his own fault the end of certain sets were his fault?

AZ, I watched every match at like 4:00 AM earlier today. You want a full-blown analysis, or a truncated, SBR-approved summary after I get off work?

AZ so far I've only watched game one (which you played excellently btw) and here are some things I think could help.

When OS was just jumping around/sitting on a ledge you usually just rolled around or played with your bananas..maybe sometimes you could shoot some peanuts/do a peanut gun cancel occasionally. I know you play much tougher competition than me but I've come to realize that a peanut gun cancel can go a long way a lot of times.

Are you going to MW champs over MLK weekend? I think I'm going to go and if so lets do some dittos/you help me out. Also, if you play me and discover I am decent you need to hook me up with at least a decent partner for teams at the tourney. Well played that first match vs OS.

I'll start by saying ur amazing. I'm nowhere near your skill so feel free to complete ignore my comment as you wish.
This is only a suggestion and I may be missing many variables BUT,
I think you needed more gimps. Your overall play is very solid and you remain very close the entire game and have good combos and 120%+ kills but you miss the luster of those under 100kills. A ledgehop->spike or something.
I realize these are ridiculously hard to pull off at your level of competition and u risk getting gimp'd/SD'ing, but I think if you could get 1gimp here and there and maintain the solid play you already have. Thats a match won right there.

Seriously, good work there, way to represent the Diddy =). Really love your fluidity on Final Des.

I saw one of your quivo fd matches, and i'm impressed. you're able to hold on to the momentum you have, and the only thing I see missing from your game is using peanuts. I don't know how much peanuts would help, it's just what I noticed in the match...

gj of course though

So I've been thinking a lot about what to do when MK (or any character for that matter) is D-air camping a platform and I think I have a sexy solution. I'm sorta pissed I didn't think of this during the match but basically imagine this set up:
MK on left platform of BF
Toss 1 banana beneith left platform
Hold other banana in hand in center bottom of stage

From here shoot a peanut, dash, glide toss U-throw first banana then glide toss U-throw the second one-follow the nanas with U-air/F-air. Those three projectiles should be able to converge on the platform in a very tight succession. The banana placed benieth the platform is the key part because its bait. If the opponent sees the banana they may drop down and try and take it-which is the ideal thing you want them to do. However if they don't touch it, then you get this anti-air peanut double nana approach that should be effective. I'll try and test it out/work on it by I think in theory it should work at least.

Regarding gimps: I rarely go for them. To many times against strong opponents I've gone for them and it has cost me a stock. I would rather hit them off and get a banana set up then work on getting low percent kill. That said I should probably go for some type of edge guarding just so the opponent doesn't always feel they have a free recovery. This is more for the TL match up than the MK match up-versus MK I think you are much better off just letting them recover, because pretty much nothing you will do will actually be able to gimp them (stupidly good recovery). Against TL I sometimes try and go for the Up-B spike because TL's Up-B always comes in from the same angle. The problem here is Quivo knows about this and usually has a bomb/boomerang, making the Up-B incredibly risky (projectile could dislodge barrels leading to early death).

Peanuts would help a lot against MK, I'm slowly working on incorporating them. Versus TL they won't help much because then you will just eat a projectile and at best trade hits. There were some things versus Quivo I wanted to do but simply didn't execute for whatever reason-one example is just short hop > nana toss, which should work well against his Z-air.

I see. Yes, I see ur point about the riskiness and I think more edgeguarding is definetly a good alternative. Especially with Diddy's Banana edgeguarding techniques. It just adds something for the opponent to stress about.

Btw, ur "New Diddy Combo video" is unaccessable on youtube for me. Test it just to make sure its still up. I'll recheck.

It got removed for some stupid reason that I wasn't even told about. I guess one of the songs I had in the background was "copyright infringement" (it really pissed me off because the video was almost at 10,000 views, sigh). I'll probably be putting another one together that actually has good recording footage and stuff, just haven't had a lot of time recently.

That combo video was nice only because it was a good place marker for how Diddy has evolved (sigh, days where I didn't dribble).

Apologies if I sound like a broken record by revisiting points others have mentioned. I haven't really bothered with reading everyone else's assessment of these sets. Seeing as I've only played one noteworthy Toon Link in one friendly (Santi), I'll avoid recommending anything that deals explicitly with the match-up itself. I'll just touch on fundamental issues as I see them.

  1. Winner's Finals Set (Vs. Quivo)

    • There is no Peanut Popgun pressure at all. Well-timed and -spaced peanuts can easily interrupt his aerial advances and bring him back to the ground. This, in turn, will set you up beautifully for a glide-toss advance if you have a banana peel in your hand. Timing and spacing are key, though, otherwise his empty short-hopped N-airs will just eat through them.

    • I notice that you have trained yourself to glide-toss into smash attacks, even if your opponents shield. This bad habit recurs throughout the rest of this set and your set against Overswarm. I counted three different instances of this in your first match against Quivo on Battlefield alone with all three different smashes. Regardless of what your philosophy is on the practical application of your KO moves during a match, you should consider reconditioning yourself to react according to whether or not a glide-tossed banana peel actually connects, as opposed to operating on instinct. This is the beauty of shield-pressuring characters with limited out-of-shield options: even if they shield, glide-tossing forward will put you in position to punish with a shield-grab or dash-grab.

    • Quivo baits your Diddy Kick. A lot. Avoid the tendency to push back when he pressures you in this manner. I saw two back-to-back Monkey Flips get baited and aerial-attacked.

    • If I had to say who in this trio of match-ups based had the longest and most efficient stretches of stage control, it would be Quivo. He took advantage of your unarmed (read: no banana peel) aggression a lot with his aerial attacks, and I at least know that you probably shouldn't even bother approaching Toon Link unless he's either been stunned or slipping on a banana peel. He baited rolls and punished premature air dodges with Spin Attack's lingering hit-boxes or charged U-smashes, and generally had you read during the majority of these matches. A couple of the matches were close, and it at least went to the last stock every time, but Quivo seemed to have you outplayed that night.

Also, I know Toon Link inherently has a better projectile pressure game, but I saw very little defensive play on your side; it seem like you were compelled mostly to rush in and do as much damage as possible, regardless of positioning. I think there were periods in the set where you could have benefited from just running away while you were taking a beating, reset your spacing and renew your banana rush.
  • Loser's Finals Set (Vs. Overswarm)

    • In first match, there was a lot of empty rolling and glide-tossing and cartwheeling that didn't contribute to putting any sort of pressure on Overswarm while he camped on the upper platform. Diddy can be extraordinarily dangerous camping underneath platforms while glide-tossing upward. A majority of characters have absolutely no answer if they are being assaulted through platforms by a grounded opponent, and Meta Knight is thankfully no different. Try to keep him stuck on platforms for as long as possible; the last thing you want to do is regain his footing (this is where you incidentally began to take damage again as well).

      • At 2:22, Overswarm gets stuck on a platform after Shuttle Looping into your shield. You immediately ran away, armed with a banana peel. Just glide-toss backwards and throw that hoe upward. Even if you didn't have a banana, you still would have been in position to safely punish with U-air, or even B-air.

    • LOL @ four consecutive glide-toss-to-D-smashes between 2:35-2:54. I really think there are better damage-racking options than this, but you won this match, so...=)

    • Overswarm doesn't even D-air camp or pressure with F-air much. He could have eaten so many peanuts.

    • Your match on Smashville was sort of a meltdown. You played extremely well until you got edge-guarded on your first stock, and you weren't quick enough to dispatch of Overswarm's momentum while he was in critical percentages.

    • I honestly would have just taken OS back to Smashville as opposed to CPing with Delfino. You played fine except for that crucial shift of momentum back into OS's column during your second stock. There's no reason you wouldn't have been able to beat him on there after a revisiting the stage. I counter-pick with the same stage I lost on all the time especially if it's a favorable neutral selection; the illusion of repeat defeat is something that's purely psychological, and I think OS just got into your head at that point.
Other than that, your Diddy looks incredibly stout and great deal more offensively varied than from the last round of videos. I only saw N-air once, but it was so beautifully-positioned, I can't really complain. =) Once you get your bananas going, you have a very solid understanding of what you ought to do next, and you follow your opponent's DI pretty proficiently. My new gripe with you is that you need to play better defense and force the approach of your opponents, especially if the tide of the battle starts to turn against your favor. There's nothing worse than pushing back against the inertia of the match out of frustration, and I think you could have taken a step back a few times during these sets to clear your head.

Everyone involved in these videos is talented, but you could have handily won all your matches with a couple of minor adjustments.

See ya at Clash of the Titans 4? =)

On Delfino, when you were on top of the Shine statue thing, how come you weren't throwing down peanuts when MK was camping next to the wall? I'm guessing you had a reason for this as it seemed as though neither of you wanted to fight at that part of the stage.

Thien: Thanks! Helps a lot!

What do you guys think of using Halberd as a Diddy CP-I think the stage could be great against MK because it really limits his approach if you camp in the middle of the level.

Halberd is amazing. I like it a great deal more than Delfino. The transformations are spaced out evenly enough to where each shift in the stage feels like a natural transition in the match. Delfino Plaza's transformations are more frequent and tend to be a little bit more disruptive. The frequency of the changes also don't really allot me ample enough time to allow the momentum to congeal on my side (either offensively or defensively), and I actually had a lot of KO and spike attempts foiled by stage transformations five times in one match this past weekend at a monthly.

The only gripe I've ever had about Halberd came up as of last night: the platform during the flight transformation seems significantly lower than other stages (I need to examine this more closely to verify this), and it seemed almost impossible at times to flush Olimar out from underneath. I wasn't actually Diddy at the time though (I was Kirby), so hopefully banana peels would have given me better options for dealing with Olimar's proficient camping.

I'm mainly thinking about it versus MK, in which the platform being lower is a positive.

One thing I do on the stage is attempt to use that laser beam thing to my advantage-simply get it to lock on you then try and get the opponent into a banana lock at the right time, and viola-they are tripping as the beam hits them. Same is true for that crane thing.

Well, it seems you rely on bananas way too much. Instead of pursuing in the air, you go back to grab a banana. You also do the same thing over and over. You hold a banana, throw it down, then throw it at you opponent. This becomes really predictable. It obviously worked, just mix it up a bit.

Bananas are pretty much the only answer to metaknight's priority. It is not like you are going to be able to just jump up and fair metaknight if he is in the air, chances are you will get a face full of sword.

I watched the videos. I am not going to go too in-depth as you probably got all you need from Le-thien, but I will say this. You have spurts of excellent pressure and times of just rolling around, throwing a banana that has no real chance of hitting, and picking it up. Keep that pressure on. Yes brawl is campy, I am not saying blindly attack; but at the same time don't just blindly defend.

O and I think halberd sounds good in theory although I have never really seen it in practice.

I watched your matches finally. You did a lot of smashes in the beginning of the matches against TL and some on MK. You could have won games 2 & 3 against Quivo if you hadn't, TL shouldn't be living to 180%. I noticed with ROB you didn't do it as much so I'm not sure if you thought to yourself "Oh, TL is light I can spare some smashes." but that really killed you. Occasionaly you driblled when you could have forward glide tossed and hit him. You rolled a lot. I know you said before that rolling a lot Vs TL helps, but you still did it Vs MK which I know isn't a good thing and you got predictable with it.

I'd say your 2 main problems was too many smashes and rolling a lot.

Actually yea...this is basically my exact thought process. I only try to save smashes against heavies, but it would probably be good to do against every character.

Matches from the Midwest Circuit Championship on January 17th. I should be able to link to other matches once OS uploads his videos, he recorded my set win over Needle of Juntah and my final loss in Loser's Semifinals to Domo.

January 17th, 2009 - Midwest Circuit Championship Video's
Midwest Circuit Championship Winner's Semifinals
Game 1: AlphaZealot (Diddy Kong) vs Anther (Pikachu): Smashville
Game 2: AlphaZealot (Diddy Kong) vs Anther (Pikachu): Port Town Aero Dive
Game 3: AlphaZealot (Diddy kong) vs Anther (Pikachu): Delfino Plaza

Interesting match, watch the third game ending if nothing else. I've played Anther in friendlies a bunch in person and online and our tournament set basically went the same way as our friendlies, which is to say they were coin-flip matches. I think I was the only person to take a game off of Anther the entire tournament (and he hasn't lost a tournament in months, except one tournament to Ally).

Midwest Circuit Championship Winner's Round 4
Game 1: AlphaZealot (Diddy Kong) vs Bloodhawk (Lucario): Pokemon Stadium 1
Game 2: AlphaZealot (Diddy Kong) vs Bloodhawk (Lucario): Frigate Orpheon

I did a money match with Bloodhawk 2 months ago, he beat me 2-0 in close games, so I was pretty happy with the results of this. I made some changes to my gameplan for the second game and saw much more positive results.

Midwest Circuit Championship Winner's Round 3
Game 1: AlphaZealot (Diddy Kong) vs Joshu (King Dedede): Halberd
Game 2: AlphaZealot (Diddy Kong) vs Joshu (King Dedede): Smashville

This is the set I'm extremely proud of. 2 months ago at the last Midwest Circuit event Joshu 2-0's me, both games on Smashville. Not only did he 2-0 me though, he dominated me, 2 stocking me in each game (low percent I believe). Since that time (and you guys may remember me making a thread about it) I've done a lot of work on the match up. One thing that helped immensely was that before the match started I sat down for 10 minutes and wrote notes about the match up, mainly things I knew Joshu would do and what my best options were to counter those things. This allowed me to have the information fresh in my mind, so when he B-throw's me off the stage I wasn't doing stupid things like immediately side-bing into his B-airs. Watch game 2 to see how much things have changed.
