Sorry for the double post but...

We should have another Christmas party somewhere.
^^^^ yesyes
I may be able to attend. Always fun times. XD
depending on when it is, i may be able to come
I will talk to Matt about it tonight. Alex DeLarge and I are planning on hosting our Christmas Smashfest again, but only if Cam will make another hype thread for it like last year.

Thanks, man. It was all part of my elaborate plan to get rid of someone who I would spend a lot of money throwing a birthday party for. ;]

Also, I might go ahead and make that thread for the Christmas party today if I get some spare time. Feeling mad motivated.

I like playing his peach A LOTTTTTTT he seriously caused me to really like the spacing challenges in that matchup. edgeguarding her is truly an art with ganon also imo. Feels good when I take games off him, he's def. a step better than me.

It's like

You get better and better with your character
but character match ups only get you so far

People who can take their character beyond simply their character are really impressive
And you need to play them as much as possible lol

Part of me wants to say technically no one can play a character beyond their character because that's impossible; no matter how you use a character, you're still using a character. You're just perceived to be doing something outside of understood action with that character.

Then again, I completely know what you mean. One of the things I love most about higher levels of play is that (in my opinion) a lot of people's personality traits, decision making processes etc are weirdly displayed by the characters they choose and the manner in which they play. I know I've talked to a few people about this but I'm was curious to hear more people's opinions.

So restated: Do you think there is a correlation (or anything relatable) between traits of a particular player and the style/character they choose?

Yes, I realize this sounds strange but give it a little thought.

Personally, I think as soon as any tech skill is developed these things become gradually more apparent in playstyles, with high/top level play just having the most descriptive pictures of the person playing.

For example, imagine people's illustrations of themselves via their character/style were related to different levels/forms of artistic expression. So like,

Starting out: scribbling with a crayon
Intermediate: loose sketching with a pencil (or equivalent)
High/top level: vivid pictures with varying shades and colors

I've said this is true for 2 years or so now.

Everyone thinks there is a certain best way to play, and maybe it's all the same thing displayed differently, but so far I haven't seen two identical high/top player styles. Everyone's opinion of the proper way to play and/or win come out in their play and say something unmistakeable about their personality.

For me, you can observe methodical execution and probably other stuff I'm still developing so it looks weird LOL. Maybe I shouldn't have used myself though....

When we look at M2K, we see all intentions focused towards efficiency. Whatever way takes a stock best is the way M2K will play for. I find this funny because he's playing the game so hard he's almost avoiding playing the people, which is something he doesn't seem to do so well irl XD

Well I know that I in particular love to pick glass cannon characters

Melee: CF
SFIV: Akuma
MvC3: Dante, Wesker, Akuma [for a bit] though I ended up with Dormammu
Dark Souls: Mage
Battlefield 3: Sniper [though arguably everyone could be classified as a Glass Cannon in that game]

So basically
I think the most fun way to play is through mindgames
Getting into my opponents head and shutting down his options in the most complete and destructive way possible

And glass cannons are usually the best way to do that
The fear of getting ***** by their extraordinary offense puts a lot of people into a more defensive position, in which you can better eliminate options towards one that you can use and abuse
In Melee, CF's speed allows that

But basically
You get hit you die
Turning this battle into a 100% or nothing
Where as I don't think other characters are as exploitable in the same way

Falco is very similar, but he's more
invisible pressure
to me

Falcon is a more tangible fear and conditioning pressure
And Falco is too but not in the same way
to me he eliminates horizontal options and then closes in

Where as Falcon goes "hey hey hey do something do something do somehtKNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
But that's just my limited understanding of the game so far

Lucas: Because, in my experience, Fox is your best character when you're actually playing well and is also the one who you tend to pick in tournament for decisive situations like 3rd games or counterpicks.

I'll respond more in a bit when I get caught up at work.

I've never understood why I like Ganon. My brain works extremely quickly, processing and responding to data at a very fast speed. Because of this, whenever I'm playing a video game I almost always play the fastest character available. Yet, for some reason, I don't like those characters in Melee, and have a lot more fun playing Ganon. I think it's weird how my character preference in melee is so different than my preference in other video games. All that being said, my technical skills aren't very advanced yet, so it's possible I'll change characters as I improve. For now, though, I'm happy playing Ganon.

Anyway, I feel like someone's personally is expressed in everything they do. Not just melee. I think there are two main reason's it's more noticeable in pros than in the typical player. The first reason is that a pro player knows the characters better. That means they have more options available to them, so can better express their personalities. The other reason is that they really care about melee - I think you have to in order to play at that high of a level. When you really care about something, you put a lot of yourself into it, so it represents you. Anyway, that's my opinion on the subject.

I always like playing the character in the game that doesn't act like all the others (like the spy in tf2)

I think its better because then i tend to only lose to people who are truly thinking and outsmarting me rather than just beating me because of their experience. Since josh blocked me i guess its safe to say this, but if i was playing fox or marth right now, its very possible that josh would beat me just out of his experience, but since i play puff and he doesn't know how to play against her i can just outplay him and win.

When i started playing i picked the ice climbers because its the same idea... you can't play against the ics like you can against any other character, and that allowed me to beat people who had been playing for a couple years even though i had only been playing for like a month because they had to actually think (like beating marths that would **** my fox because they were perfect at chaingrabs, along with the fact i had no idea how to di, but would lose to my ics because neither of us knew the matchup).

But then i learned how to wobble and do the chaingrabs consistently and it was no longer fun because i would just **** all the people who were my skill level... even i realized how lame that stuff was at low level since it was automatic and it didn't take any skill to grab since me and my friends would miss lcancels all the time lol...

So then i learned jiggs and didn't know how to rest and i had a lot of fun because it was all spacing and mindgames and she wasn't too technical...

I would always get ***** really hard, but i learned early on that you can learn a lot while losing and people are much happier and play much better when they are winning, so i wouldn't get salty and go ics and **** them like most people would have, i just kept losing...

even now i can't really play certain characters against the person i play in nova cuz i **** him and he gets mad and johns so i just play puff and lose....

Anyway i don't really know why i posted all that, but i thought the discussion about mains was pretty interesting and i think most people's idea of why i play puff is so i could copy mango and rest everyone and be super cheap, when the truth is i didn't know who mango was and basically picked puff so i could lose and still have fun lol

Why did you want to do something different though? Was it just to even the playing field? It kinda seems like that until you talk about switching to puff because lol IC CGs haha.

I don't play melee to win... i like playing it because i have to think a lot, which i find really fun and interesting... basically it got the the point with ics where i wasn't really thinking, because getting grabs was as easy as shieldgrabbing and then the combos were guaranteed and required no thought...

so instead of just sandbagging and not chain grabbing (which i tried, but its not that fun), i wanted to play a worse character and have to think more. At that time i thought puff was bad, and my friend who went on smashboards said she was midtier, because i started playing around the time mango won pound 3 so people hadn't quite gone crazy about puff yet, so i decided i would play her...

And my friend played marth and i couldn't rest, so ya it was hard as **** and i would just get outranged but it was fun because i really had to think to get opening....

Now that i know how to rest and am somewhat decent, i still think puff marth is one of the most draining matchups in the game if the marth plays sorta campy (like KP lol), i can usually only play 2-3 friendlies of that with him because they go like 8 minutes and my brain hurts lol

Hm, well I really like that mentality. I don't think many have the mindset of wanting to think more these days, so that probably helps in itself too.

Also I'd much rather fight puff than ICs so woooooo =p

i actually had an era where i enjoyed thinking and playing puff.

ethan knows all about it. about all we played was that matchup for a few weeks it felt like. those spacing battles were really fun.

today, i did that with samus. after seeing duck's matches, wavedash ftilt actually looked kinda fun. i couldn't take a match off his marth tho lol. i don't think i was CCing enough as samus.

now i just try to do fast stuff with ganon. but i need to think more to beat sheik. guhhhh
