Support the Goemon Team:
(We have Pyra and Mythra, so this would be acceptable!)

~~~History:~~~
Goemon is the main character from the Ganbare Goemon Series(or Mystical Ninja in the USA.) He has starred (in some form) in over 30 games, with a total of 5 being released in the West. He made his debut in Mr. Goemon in the Arcade all the way back in 1986. Since then he has been starring in games (as of 2011) and making cameos in most Konami products (most recent being Super Bomberman R). He is most famous for his in the west for Legend of Mystical Ninja on SNES, Mystical Ninja starring Goemon and Goemon's Great Adventure on the N64 and a really bad game on the Gameboy. These was not his last appearances though, having been in games on the PS2, GBA, NDS and Pachinko Machines. Given Konami is being nice for Smash Ultimate, maybe he has a chance.
He is rather popular, still being referenced to this day. He starred in a 23 episode Anime series, had 2 OVA's, a long running Manga series, his own Yugioh cards and more. Check out Goemon.net for more on his merc.
Strengths
Long associated with Nintendo.
Great personality and awesome.
Konami just purchased the Goemon domain. Might mean something we hope.
Premade moveset avaliable. I will prove it.
Did I say he is awesome?
Weakness
Really small time in the west compared to Simon, but we have Simon. Lets give him a shot.
Did I say small time. His last real games was in 2005. Let that sink in.
yes yes yes. I actually would have preferred him and Bomberman to Snake and Simon, though Simon does look pretty hype.
I added in (and still adding in) a updated moveset and Ebisumaru as an Echo. They would actually work very well in this pairing given what we learned from Chrom and Dark Samus.
I want to make a visual moveset using video from the games, etc. but I do not know howto yet. but I will add it when I can. Also added in Ebisumarus stock.
We need to spread the love of goemon to all!!
Oh, and both NES RPGs are translated. People need to play them also.
View attachment 159266
Entrance animation:
A door appears from a tea Shop and Goemon runs out the door slamming it behind him. He will then spin his pipe and enter his idle animation.
Idle animation:
Goemon will breath heavily raising his arms and shoulders high and then lowering. His arms will also bob left and right slightly. On a side note, Goemon's pipe is always hidden until he uses it. It is a good trick to fool people into not knowing what his actual reach is until he attacks.
Getting bored Idle animation
When he gets bored waiting, he will begin tapping his foot in anger. He will have a very angry look on his face, will turn his head left and right and will lower it occasionally.
Tiptoe animation:
Goemon will walk very slowly like he is stepping on glass.
Walking animation:
He will walk normally, throwing his arms forward and back.
jogging animation
Goemon runs moving his arms mainly in front of her body.
Running animation:
He runs while flaying his arms backwards and forward. He also turns his body as he runs.
Ducking animation:
He will knell down, put his hands on the ground, move his legs back making it look like he is doing sit-ups and then lay down on the ground.
Sustained ducking animation:
He will lay there, but have his head bob left and right.
Crawl animation:
He crawls like a caterpillar crawling on the ground. He raises his rear as he moves forward.
Dodge
Goemon will fall backwards into the background. He will hit his bum on the ground, which will cause him to jump up quickly. He will then push himself back onto the play field.
Air Dodge
Goemon will Perform a backflip into the background. During the somersault, when his back is towards the players is when he is dodging. This spin is very quick.
Roll Turn
He will lunge forward, hit the ground with his shoulder and roll. During the roll, he will tilt to the side, causing him to turn right-side-up while facing the opposite direction. He will then push himself off the ground and stand up.
Roll Forward
He will lunge forward, hit the ground with his shoulder and roll.
Roll Backward
He will fall backwards, hit the ground with the bottom of his spin and roll. When he his back is facing upwards again, he will push himself off the ground forcing him into the air. He will then fly backwards a little, hit the ground and slide to a stop.
Jumping animation:
He will jump into the air with his arms above his head.
Double Jump animation:
He will perform a spin, grabbing his legs as he does the somersault.
Falling animation:
He falls just like he jumps. When he hits the ground, it is with great force that wind will fly out from under him. He will then be knelling and when he forces himself to stand up by using his leg strength.
Standing on Ledge forward:
He will stand there knelling on one foot swinging his arms trying to get steady. He will bob forward and back as he tries to stay in postion.
Standing on Ledge backward:
He will stand, almost falling back swinging his arms to keep himself from falling backwards. He will have a very panicked face.
Ledge Cling - Pull self up off Ledge - No attack:
He will hold on like he is doing pull ups. He will also pull himself up off the ledge like he is doing pull ups.
Tripping:
As he is walking, he will lose his balance, enter his “Standing on Ledge forward” animation and then fall over, performing a flip while he flys to the ground. Once there, he lays there, not moving.
Foot Stool animation:
He will have one arm raised in the air and his foot will land on the person. He will then push off their head and raise his other arm and leg while lowering the ones on the side that push down on the opponents head.
Being weak Hit animation:
He will stutter back, but nothing to drastic. His arms will fly into the air as this happens, with his pipe extending in a 45 degree like angle.
Being strong Hit animation:
He will rear back in pain and actually take a few steps back. This make him difficult to combo.
Being sent flying:
When he is sent flying, it looks like he is laying on his stomach. He is yelling out with a frightened look on his face as he spins in a 360 on the horizontal axis.
Star animation:
He will just spin in a circle like everyone else does.
Hitting the screen animation:
You get to see his pained expression he is using in the “Being sent flying” animation. To get a good idea of this, look at the fake update. In the four pictures showing him in action, you can see this expression and a rough idea of how it will look.
Shield Animation:
Goemon will put his pipe in front of his body and grab the other end of it. He will hold it in place in front of him and the typical smash shield will appear around him.
Broken Shield Animation / death animation:
He will stand in place and his upper body will spin around his center focal axis. He will then fall back and hit the ground.
Dazed:
Goemon will just lean over really tired and winded.
Normal A
Goemon will pull his pipe out of nowhere and swing it in front of him in a clubbing like motion.
Combo A
He will then swing the pipe in a horizontal fashion from the arm not holding the pipe and away from the arm. The final hit is another clubbing like blow.
Running A
Goemon will lean over pulling out his pipe as he moves. He will get his hands close to the ground and stick the pipe into the earth. He will then drag the pipe slowly across the ground causing dirt or sparks to fly into the air. He will drag the pipe for a short while and then force it into the air. While the pipe is coming up, it he will jump with it into the air. This move should have an upper cut like feel to it.
Duck A
Goemon will pull out his pipe and swing it in front of him with no problems at all.
Ledge Attack
Goemon will pull himself up, lower his body in a knelling like animation. He will lower his arms, spread his right leg aside and back. In this postion, he will then perform the typical throwing the table like animation. The table will have the end he throws fly up into the air and then fall back. The table will bounce on both ends before setteling down again and disappearing. A mat will appear just so he can do it also.
Tilt Forward A
Goemon will spread his legs slightly and knell his upper torso over slightly. He will put his right hand near his left side and pull out his pipe. He will then swat the pipe in front of him. It will come from the lower left corner of his body and appear to be like a samurai attack. The pipe will come out with great force, but look like he did a casual swing with his pipe.
Tilt Up A
Goemon will pull out his pipe and start swinging it above his head. It should look like he is trying to swat flies. While his pipe is above his head, he will have his body leaning slightly and his other arm moving in front of his body in a similar fashion to the hand holding the pipe. He will also have the angry face while he is doing it.
Tilt Down A
Goemon will just lower his pipe and raise it up into the air for the attack. It will start off low beside his body, move forward in a semi-circle and end above his head. It is a useful move even though it is a down move because it has a large range. (being the front semi-circle of his hitboxes.)
Smash Forward A
Goemon will perform the sparta kick on the person in front of him.
Smash Up A
Goemon will pull out his pipe and enter the charging position where he has one leg off the ground and his back is arched behind him. His upper body will almost be facing up into the air as he charges his pipe up. When the attack reaches full strength, he wil release a basing like attack directly above his head. Think of his normal attack, but only going up.
Smash Down A
Goemon will knell over like he is about to fart. His pipe will be out while he stands there and at his side. After the charge period, Goemon will lean back, raising his arm over his head and swing the pipe at the ground. The swing is at a diagonal and will only hit in one direction.
Air Neutral A - Spin Kick (from ganbare goemon kurunara koi ayashige ikka no kuroi kage [PSX])
Goemon will perform a 360 somersault kick. He will have a freaked out face while he does it..
Air Forward A
Goemon will take out his pipe and perform a giant swing bludgeoning attack with it. It will start behind him as he attacks, and it will fly forward.
Air Down A - Dive Punch (from ganbare goemon kurunara koi ayashige ikka no kuroi kage [PSX])
Goemon will point his pipe straight down towards the ground. As he falls, he will keep it there. He is in a position where his shoulders are in line with the pipe, his body is turned to the side, his knees are slightly curved and his arm not holding the pipe is at a 45 degree angle moving away from his body in the opposite direction of the attack.
Air Back A
Goemon will crunch his body into a ball for a split second. He will look like he is doing a canonball with his back goign straight into the air. He will then thrust his feet backwards in an extended back kick like animation. He will not pull out his pipe for this attack.
Air Up A
Goemon will thrust his pipe in the air similar to his up smash attack. This will be done in the air though.
Goemon's B moves are special because he can not only perform them while standing and jumping, but he can also perform them while lying down.
Neutral B - Medal of Flames (from Legend of Mystical Ninja [SNES])
This move is from Mystical Ninja and Goemons Great Adventure on the N64. He learns the move by donating five Ryu to the temple on top of the hill. This move is pretty much him throwing the currency in the games, and when he gets the ability to charge it, it is him throwing the currency in the games on fire.
Goemon will throw a coin out in front of him. This attack can be charged up by holding down B for a short time. When this move is charged, Goemon will throw a further flying, stronger coin on fire. This move will knock an opponent back slightly and if done right, the flame coin will get in a few more hits before disappearing. This move will always have a forward trajectory, even when he is lying down.
Forward B - Mist Meteorite (from bouken jidai katsugeki goemon [PS2])
This move comes from the only entry on the Playstation 2. This is a different Goemon, but the move is still good. He fires a mist like meteorite from the sky damageing foes in front of him.
In smash, Goemon will throw out a bluish mist meteorite. It will go from his fist a small distance in front of him. This mist damages anyone in the area it occupies and lasts for a few seconds after sprayinng. While mist is on the stage, this move cannot be used again.
Down B - Magic: Sudden Impact (from Mystical Ninja starring Goemon [N64]
This move was learned from the guy that stole Goemons house in the legend of the Mystical Ninja on the N64. It is a super strength move where Goemon can move giant steel blocks that block the path to the mountains.
Goemon will charge up in a super sayian like fashion and increase his strength and knockback skills by sacrificing his defense and his weight. In Sudden Impact mode, Goemon is stronger and has better knockback, but he has low defense and takes twice the normal damage as well as being able to be killed at lower percentages easier. This move lasts for about 20 seconds at a time.
Up B - Super Goemon [Legend of the Mystical Ninja [SNES]
Goemon dawn his super cape and lunge into the air. He will then slowly float down, giving him execellent horizontal recovery. If this move is canceled, or he is hit, he begins free fall. He kind of looks like he is flying like a super hero while performing the move.
Final Smash - Impact (from Mystical Ninja starring Goemon [N64])
Impact: Impact is a giant Goemon robot who showed up in the SNES games first. He was built by the Wise man (or is an alien. Your pick) for Goemon to use. In the N64 game, Impact is a film star who has gone to the USA to star in his own movie. When ever Goemon and his team needs him to beat up on a giant robot, all he has to do is pull out his conch shell and blow on it to summon him. Impact will then show up, beam teh goemon team into his head and then begin his run to the boss fight. Every time they run to the boss, Impact destroys many towns and homes on the way. In fact, destroying them gives you Coins to launch at your enemy.
Goemon will Pull out his horn and blow into it. Anyone caught in the sound waves are then part of the Impact smash sequence. Impact will then fly into the background and beam up the character. Goemon will fall into the piolet seat upside down. Impact will then charge up his Impact beam and fire it into the captured players, damaging and killing anything caught in the blast.
Grab Animation – Chain Pipe (from Mystical Ninja starring Goemon [N64]
Goemon will launch out his chain pipe at anyone who is in front of him.
Running Grab animation
His running grab is similar to his normal grab, he just does not stop running unless he catches someone.
Running Grab Missing animation
The pipe will hit the ground and lay there. Because Goemon can still run even though he tried to grab, the pipe will just retract as he moves.
Pivot Grab
He turns very quickly and uses his chain pipe like his normal grab animation.
Hold Animation
He holds the person with both hands up in the air. It looks like he is holding the collar of someones shirt and is holding them up in the air.
Attack Animation
Goemon will lift them off the ground and shake them violently.
Throw Forward
Goemon will hit them forward, pull out his pipe, toss it into their heads as he does a spin. He will life his hand in the air as he ducks and will grab the pipe as it flies back into his hand. This attack will send them flying in a strictly horizontal trajectory.
Throw Up
Goemon will easily just toss them into the air.
Throw Backward
He will lower one hand and turn so his back is to the opponent. He will then pull them over his shoulder and slam them into the ground, causing them to fly off into the air.
Throw Down
Goemon will push them back, pull out his pipe and smash them into the ground with it. He will then perform a back flip kick to send them into the air.
Up Taunt
Goemon will pull out the conch shell in his coat and show it off. He will swing it around, lift it over his head and then act like he is going to summon Impact. Afterwards, He puts it back in his coat.
Right Taunt
Goemon will stand on one leg, pull out his pipe and start spinning it in a circle. He will then lose his balance a little, freak out and put his pipe away.
Down Taunt
Goemon will put his foot back, extend his arms with one going forward with palm going up. He will then turn his head in a circle and sneer.
Win pose 1
Goemon will jump down, pull out the conch and summon impact. He will then fly away in the beam of light that appears.
Win pose 2
Goemon will be laying there looking at the screen and smiling. He will also be spinning his pipe in a circle.
Win pose 3
Goemon will sit down and pull out rice cakes. He will then offer it to the losers. Seeing no takers, Goemon will then begin to eat his lunch.
Lose
Goemon will just be leaning over as in his dazed like state.
Entrance animation:
A door appears from a tea Shop and Ebisumaru runs out the door slamming it behind him. He will then rub the top of his head, as if cleaning sweet, and enter his idle animation.
Idle animation:
Ebisumaru will breath as if he is out of breath, rocking his body left and right as if in there is a little bounce in his step. His arms will also bob left and right slightly. On a side note, Ebisumaru's weapons are always hidden until he needs them. It is a good trick to fool people into not knowing what his actual reach is until he attacks.
Getting bored Idle animation
Ebisumaru will start swaying his arms back and forth while standing in place.
Tiptoe animation:
Ebisumaru wil tip toe on the tops of his toes. He will also wave his arms back and forth..
Walking animation:
He will walk normally, having his arms sway beside him..
jogging animation
He will skip as he moves. A very jolly styled skip.
Running animation:
He runs while flaying his arms backwards and forward. He also turns his body as he runs.
Ducking animation:
He will knell down, put his hands on the ground, and flip over onto his back. Flying flat.
Sustained ducking animation:
He will lay there, as if asleep.
Crawl animation:
Ebisumaru will thrust his torso upwards and will then shimmy forward, while still on his back.
Dodge
Ebisumaru will fall backwards into the background. He will hit his bum on the ground, which will cause him to jump up quickly. He will then push himself back onto the play field.
Air Dodge
Ebisumaru will Perform a forward flip into the background. During the somersault, when his back is towards the players is when he is dodging. This spin is very quick.
Roll Turn
He will lunge forward, hit the ground with his shoulder and roll. During the roll, he will tilt to the side, causing him to turn right-side-up while facing the opposite direction. He will then push himself off the ground and stand up.
Roll Forward
He will lunge forward, hit the ground with his shoulder and roll.
Roll Backward
He will fall backwards, hit the ground with the bottom of his spin and roll. When he his back is facing upwards again, he will push himself off the ground forcing him into the air. He will then fly backwards a little, hit the ground and slide to a stop.
Jumping animation:
He will jump into the air with his arms above his head.
Double Jump animation:
He will perform a spin, grabbing his legs as he does the somersault.
Falling animation:
He falls just like he jumps. When he hits the ground, it is with great force that wind will fly out from under him. He will then be knelling and when he forces himself to stand up by using his leg strength.
Standing on Ledge forward:
He will stand there knelling on one foot swinging his arms trying to get steady. He will bob forward and back as he tries to stay in postion.
Standing on Ledge backward:
He will stand, almost falling back swinging his arms to keep himself from falling backwards. He will have a very panicked face.
Ledge Cling - Pull self up off Ledge - No attack:
He will hold on like he is doing pull ups. He will also pull himself up off the ledge like he is doing pull ups.
Tripping:
As he is walking, he will lose his balance, enter his “Standing on Ledge forward” animation and then fall over, performing a flip while he flys to the ground. Once there, he lays there, not moving.
While the hammer is coming up, it he will jump with it into the air. This move should have an upper cut like feel to it.
Duck A
Ebisumaru will pull out his food platter and swing it in front of him with no problems at all.
Ledge Attack
Ebisumaru will pull himself up, lower his body in a knelling like animation and then send out a ribbon to wack anyone nearby.
Tilt Forward A
Ebisumaru will spread his legs slightly and knell his upper torso over slightly. He will put his right hand near his left side and pull out his closed fan. He will then swat the closed fan in front of him. It will come from the lower left corner of his body and appear to be like a samurai attack. The closed fan will come out with great force, but look like he did a casual swing with his closed fan.
Tilt Up A
Ebisumaru will pull out his closed fan and start swinging it above his head. It should look like he is trying to swat flies. While his closed fan is above his head, he will have his body leaning slightly and his other arm moving in front of his body in a similar fashion to the hand holding the closed fan. Air Forward A
Ebisumaru will take out his pan and perform a giant swing bludgeoning attack with it. It will start behind him as he attacks, and it will fly forward.
Air Down A - Butt Smasher (from ganbare goemon kurunara koi ayashige ikka no kuroi kage [PSX])
Ebisumaru will perform the Butt Smasher, hitting them with a powerful butt spike.
Air Back A
Ebisumaru will crunch his body into a ball for a split second. He will look like he is doing a canonball with his back goign straight into the air. He will then thrust his feet backwards in an extended back kick like animation.
Air Up A
Ebisumaru will thrust his pan in the air similar to his up smash attack. This will be done in the air though.
Ebisumaru's B moves are special because he can not only perform them while standing and jumping, but he can also perform them while lying down.
Neutral B - Shuriken (from Legend of Mystical Ninja [SNES])
This move is from almost everyone Ganbare Goemon game starring Ebisumaru. This move is pretty much him throwing a Ninja star in the games, and when he gets the ability to charge it, it is him throwing a larger ninja starr that can bounce off of walls.
Ebisumaru will throw a Shuriken out in front of him. This attack can be charged up by holding down B for a short time. When this move is charged, Shuriken will throw a further flying, stronger and larger Shuriken. This move will knock an opponent back slightly and if done right, the Shuriken will get in a few more hits before disappearing. This move will always have a forward trajectory, even when he is lying down.
Forward B - Poison Mist (from Goemon's Great Adventure [N64])
This infamous move is integral to the story of the game. Ebisumaru will turn around, bend over and let out a purple mist. This mist damages anyone in the area it occupies and lasts for a few seconds after sprayinng. While mist is on the stage, this move cannot be used again.
Down B - Ballerina (from ganbare goemon toukai douchuu ooedo tengurigaeshi no maki [NDS])
This outfit shows up in many different games for Ebisumaru. He tends to dawn it whenever the chance arrises. It had special properities in the NDS game, allowing him to drill underground. Given Ebisumarus Echo status however, it will function more akin to Goemon's Sudden Impact.
Ebisumaru will twirl in a circle and change into his Ballerina costume. this will increase his strength and knockback skills by sacrificing his defense and his weight. In Ballerina mode, Ebisumaru is stronger and has better knockback, but he has low defense and takes twice the normal damage as well as being able to be killed at lower percentages easier. This move lasts for about 20 seconds at a time. there is a meter on screen showing when the move is about to end.
Up B - Fly Fans (from Legend of Mystical Ninja [SNES])
This move also has shown up in multiple locations, being an attack in the SNES Mystical Ninja, and also a recovery in Goemon's Great Adventure.
Ebisumaru will pull out the fans and thrust himself into the air. He will then slowly float down, giving him execellent horizontal recovery. If this move is canceled, or he is hit, he begins free fall.
Final Smash - Impact (from Mystical Ninja starring Goemon [N64])
Impact: Impact is a giant Goemon robot who showed up in the SNES games first. He was built by the Wise man (or is an alien. Your pick) for Goemon to use. In the N64 game, Impact is a film star who has gone to the USA to star in his own movie. When ever Goemon and his team needs him to beat up on a giant robot, all he has to do is pull out his conch shell and blow on it to summon him. Impact will then show up, beam teh goemon team into his head and then begin his run to the boss fight. Every time they run to the boss, Impact destroys many towns and homes on the way. In fact, destroying them gives you Coins to launch at your enemy.
Ebisumaru will Pull out his horn and blow into it. Anyone caught in the sound waves are then part of the Impact smash sequence. Impact will then fly into the background and beam up the character. Ebisumaru will fall into the piolet seat upside down. Impact will then charge up his Impact beam and fire it into the captured players, damaging and killing anything caught in the blast.
Grab Animation – Hook Glove (from ganbare goemon uchuu kaizoku akogingu [PSX])
Ebisumaru will launch out his Hook Glove at anyone who is in front of him.
Running Grab animation
His running grab is similar to his normal grab, he just does not stop running unless he catches someone.
Running Grab Missing animation
The hook glove will hit the ground and lay there.
Pivot Grab
He turns very quickly and uses his hook glove like his normal grab animation.
Hold Animation
He holds the person with both hands up in the air. It looks like he is holding the collar of someones shirt and is holding them up in the air.
Attack Animation
Ebisumaru will lift them off the ground and shake them violently.
Throw Forward
Ebisumaru will hit them forward, pull out his Hammer, toss it into their heads as he does a spin. He will life his hand in the air as he ducks and will grab the pipe as it flies back into his hand. This attack will send them flying in a strictly horizontal trajectory.
Throw Up
Ebisumaru will easily just toss them into the air.
Throw Backward
He will lower one hand and turn so his back is to the opponent. He will then pull them over his shoulder and slam them into the ground, causing them to fly off into the air.
Throw Down
Ebisumaru will push them back, pull out his hammer and smash them into the ground with it. He will then perform a back flip kick to send them into the air.
Up Taunt
Ebisumaru Will perform a ballerina twirl.
Right Taunt
Ebiusmaru Do a Hulla Hoop spin.
Down Taunt
Ebiusmaru pull out a steam bun or sticky rice and munch on it.
Win pose 1
Ebisumaru will Perform a dance for the player, mainly shaking his hips and doing a hero pose afterwords.
Win pose 2
The camera will spin around Ebisumaru as he tries to hide the food he is eating.
Win pose 3
Ebisumaru will sit down on the ground as if tired and just take a break, giving a smile of victory.
Lose
Ebisumaru will just be leaning over as in his dazed like state.
Welcome to the {0} Smashboards Character Analysis! These articles will not be looking at why a character is or isn't likely, so please do not expect that going in. Instead, they will focus on how a character might play in Smash and how their series might be represented within the Fighter's Pass.
"The most likely to star in a video game" Smashboards' Goemon and Ganbare Goemon Analysis
Introduction to the Ganbare Goemon series and Goemon
Ganbare Gomeon was created and produced by Konami. The driving creative force behind the creation of Goemon was led by Etsunobu Ebisu. The series protagonist, Goemon, was loosely based on the japanese robinhood like figure of Ishikawa Goemon. Ishikawa Goemon was a noble who would steal gold and valuables to give to the poor. Ultimately, his fate was to be boiled alive with his son. Whilst the legend itself is rather series in tone, the Ganbare Goemon series is not. Ganbare Goemon, or as it is known in the west "Mystical Ninja" is about the exploits of Goemon and his gang of misfits. The series is set in an alternate "feudal" japan where everything looks ancient Japanese, but the likes of Giant robots, aliens from outer space, crazed dancing stage plays, laugh tracks, 4th wall breaks, a man who throws the death star and many more zenny things are possible.
Like the Mario series, there is no real continuous narrative within the series. It often starts with something happening and Goemon and his crew jump in to save the day. Either it being him saving his beloved Omitsu from being kidnapped by men dressed as Rabbits or saving the world from a man who insists on recycling, anything can happen.
Gameplay of his first outing, Mr. Goemon (1986) revolved jumping from rooftops to avoid obsticales and enemies to reach the end of levels. It was a popular Arcade game, enough for Konami to create 23 main line games, 7 spin off games, 2 Pachislot machines, a medal game and even a board game. The Goemon formula would then evolve into more action platformer fair, with bulk of the titles being 2D side scrolling platformers.
Given such a large series, many would wonder why it is mostly unheard of in the West. The reason for that is because Konami deemed the Mystical Ninja too Japanese and difficult for the west to understand. Only 5 titles (Legend of the Mystical Ninja [SNES], Legend of the Mystical Ninja [GB], Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (in "Konami GB Collection Vol.3") [GB], Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon [N64] and Goemon's Great Adventure/Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon 2) would be released outside of Japan. Even with its limited worldwide success, the Goemon series flourished in Japan, with a 23 episode anime series, two anime OVAs and a series consisting of 19 Manga. The games the series produced are some of the best platformers many would have missed, with the N64 era being a shining example of solid 3D platforming goodness, being an excellent Legend of Zelda styled game before the official Legend of Zelda was released on the system.
Goemon Character Overview
Goemon would be rather unique for a fighter pass character given that he would follow in Banjos footsteps of being relatively plain, with only one main gimmick in his arsenal. This however does not mean he would be uninteresting or bland, just that he is more tuned for being a Smash Ultimate fighter. Let’s break down Goemon's basics.
Goemon is an average character, similar to Mario, being roughly near the middle. He has decent range, with his neutral B and forward B giving him ranged options. His attack has some decent distance to it and with his moderate speed; he can be quite a formidable foe. He however is slightly slower with his attacks and some of his moves are predictable.
Goemon's color costumes are all based on references to his series. His first 4 colors directly reference himself, and his partners Ebisumaru, Sasuke and Yae. The fifth color is in reference to his Kabuki character design. His fifth color is reference to Baben from the PSX game. His pink alt is referencing a few different foes he has interacted with in his past games, most noteablly the Peach Mountain Showguns. His last color is based on Gorku, also from the PSX game.
Goemon's franchise icon is the same symbol seen thought all of this games.
Goemon’s Gimmick
The main gimmick Goemon has is his ability to upgrade his weapons based on pick-ups. If Goemon is able to pull off a charged smash attack that is greater than 60% of its full charge, a fortune cat will fall out of the enemy opponent. If Goemon collects this item, he will gain stat buffs until he the next time he takes damage. Goemon has the ability to upgrade his attack power and range up to four levels, with each getting longer and stronger as he gains fortune cats. If he is hit, he will drop down a level, meaning that it benefits him to avoid damage as much as possible, but he does not start over every time he is struck.
Goemon Specials and Final Smash
Neutral Special: Medal of Flames (Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon):
This move is from Mystical Ninja and Goemons Great Adventure on the N64. He learns the move by donating five Ryu to the temple on top of the hill. This move is pretty much him throwing the currency in the games, and when he gets the ability to charge it, it is him throwing the currency in the games on fire. Goemon will throw a coin out in front of him. This attack can be charged up by holding down B for a short time. When this move is charged, Goemon will throw a further flying, stronger coin on fire. This move will knock an opponent back slightly and if done right, the flame coin will get in a few more hits before disappearing. This move will always have a forward trajectory, even when he is lying down. There is no bounce or arc to the move. It flys forward until it disappears or hits an enemy. Goemon can spam this move, similar to Falco's blaster, but given its wind up time, it is mainly best for zoning.
Side Special: Mist Meteor (Bōken Jidai Katsugeki Goemon):
Goemon will extend his arm out and a mist will spring out from around him. He is able to damage anyone nearby with this mist that appears. The mist will fly away from Goemon in an arc and land into the ground 4 ft in front of the character. Given it travels in an arc, it is possible for enemies to duck under this move to avoid being hit. This move makes a good edge guarding technique, as when it is shot offstage, it will travel until it disappears off the screen. Goemon is able to move again after the mist has left his person and started flying. He is not able to fire the move a second time whilst a Mist Meteor is currently on the stage. Only one Mist Meteor at any given time.
Down Special: Kabuki Quantum (Legend of the Mystical Ninja):
This move hails from the "Legend of the Mystical Ninja" on the SNES. This is one of Goemon's super moves he can perform to clear out enemies. When pressing Down B, Goemon will grow his hair out long and whip it back and forth. He does this in a head banging circular motion. Just like Donkey Kongs down B, if you hit the B button whilst pressing, he will continue to spin his head. Unlike DK's move, this move can be performed in the air. When Goemon starts, he will lose all forward momentum and drop in place as he whips his hair back and forth.
Up Special: Super Goemon (Legend of the Mystical Ninja):
Goemon will spring into the air vertically about twice his height. He goes straight up vertically and then levels off. He will fly horizontally at this height for 3 seconds before entering free fall. The height Goemon files upwards is dependent on how long B is held, with him flying higher the longer B is held down. This move has great horizontal recovery, but is predictable due to Goemon being stuck on the same horizontal plain until free fall.
Final Smash: Goemon Impact (Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon):
Goemon will pull out his signature triton shell and blow into it. He will then jump off the screen and into Goemon Impact. The player will gain control of a reticle that they need to move and aim at opponents. When the B button is pressed again, Goemon impact will fire his Goemon Impact Laser attack into the stage, killing anyone caught in the blast radius.
Goemon’s Smash attacks and other Notable attacks
Neutral A / Multi Attack (Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon)
Goemon swings his pipe in an arch fashion over his head. The attack starts from behind his body, swings to in front of him and down toward the ground. It covers 20 degrees from vertical behind his back to 150 degrees from vertical in his front. If the player presses the button again, the Goemon will pull the attack back in a sweeping sideward motion. The second attack has no vertical range, being 90 degrees from Goemons top and sweeping sidewards. A Third press will have Goemon finish off his three hit combo by performing another downward vertical swing. This swing looks very similar to the first one and functions the same.
Forward Tilt A (Legend of the Mystical Ninja)
Goemon swings his pipe forward. This is very similar to his Neutral A attack, but the attack comes out a few frames faster and it has a slightly larger hitbox.
Up Tilt A (Legend of the Mystical Ninja)
Goemon Swings his pipe directly up above his head. This move Functions, has the same frame data and power as his forward tilt, it is just that Goemon is swinging his pipe upwards to the sky.
Down Tilt A (Legend of the Mystical Ninja)
Goemon has the ability to crawl. If the player holds down, Goemon will lie down on his stomach and crawl. By performing his Down Tilt, he will swing his pipe as if he was standing. This move is lower to the ground, and only hits infront of Goemon. Given he is on the ground though, he has a smaller hit box and the move still has the same speed and power as his Forward Tilt A.
Aerial Neutral A – Daikaen (Ganbare Goemon Gaiden 2: Tenka no Zaihō)
Goemon will generate fire around himself. These 6 little fireballs will spin around him for a brief time as he falls to the ground.
Aerial Up A – Breaking Kick (Ganbare Goemon: Kuru Nara Koi! Ayashige Ikka no Kuroi Kage)
Goemon spins upside down and performs a tormado like kick up into the air. It is very similar to the move Rising tackle that terry bogard uses. Goemon however does not gain any vertical lift from performing the move.
Aerial Down A – Turning Leg (Ganbare Goemon: Kuru Nara Koi! Ayashige Ikka no Kuroi Kage)
This is Goemons down Air move. He spins in a circle sweeping his leg around him, perfoming a spinning kick. A good example of said move in action is Mario’s tornado punch, but instead of punching, Goemon is kicking.
Aerial Forward A – Rocket Kiseru (Ganbare Goemon Gaiden: Kieta Ōgon Kiseru)
Goemon fires a small rocket pipe lid off the top of his pipe directly into the opponent in front of him. Given this attack is rather powerful, it performs rather decent knockback.
Aerial Back A – Rocket Kiseru (Ganbare Goemon Gaiden: Kieta Ōgon Kiseru)
Goemon performs the same move as he does for his Aerial Forward A, but he turns and fires it behind him instead of infront of him. Different animation for the attack.
Smash Forward – Kobun Tiger (Legend of the Mystical Ninja)
Goemon will jump onto a Kobun tiger and lunge forwards, ramming into any foes that get into his way. Goemon will then jump off the beast as it turns and disappears.
Smash Down – Mountain Ox Cart (Bōken Jidai Katsugeki Goemon)
Two large ox like carts appear on either Side of Goemon. They come out of the ground with force, knocking foes into the air with an upwards trajectory. When the smash is released, the ox cars will then thrust outwards, away from Goemon. This second part of the attack causes a more horizontal trajectory to enemies that are struck by the attack.
Smash Up – Hidden Snake Road (Bōken Jidai Katsugeki Goemon)
Goemon will stand in place and change the attack. When released, Bone snakes will burst out from underneath him and fly into the sky hitting directly above him. This move has decent range, being able to go roughly twice the height of Goemon himself.
Grab – Chain Pipe (Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon)
Goemon throws out his chain pipe Grab. It is like his standard pipe, but it has great reach. Think of Links Hook shot. This grab can also attach to the stage. The chain pipe has considerable reach, about twice that of Goemons standard attack.
Pummel – Kiseru Level 4 (Goemon: Shin Sedai Shūmei!)
Goemon swings his pipe into the enemy and a shining light appears as his pipe strikes the foe, counting as multiple hits and doing multiple pieces of damage.
Throw Down – Kiwai No Mouse (Bōken Jidai Katsugeki Goemon)
6 Small rocket mice appear under Goemon as he slams the opponent into the ground. When the enemy hits the ground, the rocket mice explode, launching the enemy high into the air.
Throw Forward– Rush down (Ganbare Goemon: Kuru Nara Koi! Ayashige Ikka no Kuroi Kage)
Goemon will Take the person and perform close line on them and knocking them forward.
Throw Backward – Boomerang Kiseru (Ganbare Goemon Gaiden: Kieta Ōgon Kiseru)
Goemon will throw his opponent into the ground, and then push them off, toss his pipe into them and send them flying. The pipe will ricochet back to Goemon.
Throw Up – Shirara no Gun (Bōken Jidai Katsugeki Goemon)
Goemon will turn into a small hurricane, spin the opponent around in a circle and launch them high into the air. He will then turn back to normal after the opponent is sent flying.
Goemon’s Entrance Animation and other Animations
Entrance (Legend of the Mystical Ninja)
Goemon will exit a curtain, as if he is leaving from a house.
Taunt Up (Legend of the Mystical Ninja)
Goemon will spin his pipe in a circle and then bonk himself on the head, surprising himself.
Taunt Forward (Mystical Ninja Staring Goemon)
Goemon will face the screen and start to do a “DBZ” style charging pose. His hair will then flair yellow, like he went super sayian. Goemon will then power down right afterwards.
Taunt Down (Legend of the Mystical Ninja)
Goemon will spin his pipe, similar as his up taunt, but instead of hitting himself on the head, he succeeds in the spin and gives a pose, extending his other hand and standing on one foot, to look cool.
Idle 1 (Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon)
When Goemon has been left idle for too long, he will put his hands on his hips and start tapping his foot. He has a very angry expression on his face, to signify he is not amused.
Idle 2 (Goemon Anime)
When Goemon has been left idle for too long, he will pull out a rice ball and quickly eat it up before getting back into stance.
Victory 1 (Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon)
Goemon will plant his foot into the ground, with a wide gap between his legs. He will put his left hand forward and spin his head in a clockwards fashion. This looks very similar to his animation that is played when he picks up a fortune doll in the Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon N64 game
Victory 2 (Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon)
Goemon descends from the sky with sparkles flying around him. This mirrors his animation as he is dropped off by Impact after successfully defeating an impact boss. Goemon will hit the ground and perform a pose with his pipe. The standard legs spread and arms forward pose he often takes.
Victory 3 (Mr Goemon)
Goemon will turn to the screen, hop on one foot to the left, all the while throwing some Ryo. He will continue hopping left throwing the coins until he disappears off screen.
Lose Screen
Goemon performs a slow clap, with a rather angry look upon his face.
Victory Theme (Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon)
This is the Goemon Impact Victory Theme that plays once Goemon Impact has defeated a giant robot.
Goemon’s Classic Mode:
Title: Most Likely to star in a
The theme of Goemon’s arcade mode is twofold. Not only is he going on a standard adventure to defeat the villain a-la his gaming adventures, but he is also attempting to break into the west and show the world he is Most likely to star in a video game. His classic mode revolves around taking down other famous game protagonists, but in the vein of a goemon adventure.
Round 1 –Vs. Pac man, Mr. Game and Watch
The first round is Goemon starting with the earliest known game characters in the game. He is taking on the elderly of Pac man and Mr Game and Watch.
Round 2 –Vs. Ryu, Megaman
Goemon’s journey has only begun. It is now time for him to take on his next advisory. He has to defeat the Capcom powerhouses Ryu and Megaman, showing that his series has what it takes to stand with his retro kin.
Round 3 –Vs. Giant R.O.B.
After many major battles, there is often an impact battle. This fight is to represent that. That is why he is fighting a giant ROB.
Round 4 –Vs. Sonic, Bayonetta
Goemon is now making a stop at the Sega building. He is taking on the heros of Segas old and new series.
Round 5 –Vs. Simon, Richter, Snake
One last stop before the Goemon takes on the greats. He Is taking on his Konami brethren to show how strong he really is.
Round 6 –Vs. Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser
The final stop, to show the world he is most likely to star in a smash game is the Mario team. Goemon is to take on Mario and his crew. Goemon usually would not be doing this alone, but given Smash, he has to do his best.
Round Final –Vs. Gallom
Every Goemon game often ends with, or closely with an impact boss battle. Gallom is a perfect stand in for said fight.
Goemon’s Stage: Plasma Fortune Telling House
https://imgur.com/yNZgeD8
The Goemon Plasma stage is rather simples compared to many of the stages that came before it. It is a single walk off platform that has one small wall placed in the middle of the stage. This wall is just a rope that can be bounced off of. The left, right and up directions are where opponents can be KOed. The stage has some background cameos, mainly being Plasma himself and his two fantastic dancers. When the fight gets intense, Plasma will swing on his rope more and more and when the battle gets down to the last minute, or final stocks, the dancers go into dancing overdrive and start dancing at a much quicker pace. It is a simple stage, in the same vain as Dracula’s Castle.
There are other stage cameos outside of Plasma and his Dancers. Specifically Omitsu, Princess Yuki, Kurobei and Ms. Impact peering in from the roof every now and then.
It's the Ganbare part X)
Hi, they say you're the top Goemon guy here, and I'm here to promote Goemon. Need banners? media? I have plenty of good stuff.. from a Goemon fan too. All free to use for any Goemon fan.
I have to say, I thought he'd be the grand obvious choice, but Sakurai seems to take note of.. the intenet. I don't appreciate how he's left in the dust and characters like Shovel Knight (or Steve) are more asked than Goemon. SO, where do we start?
Oh, do you mind helping me with my sig. I don't seems to know how to upload an image to it, is it because I'm a noob here?
Once Geno and Banjo are in (and as of right now, their chances look pretty good), Goemon has my full support for DLC. I think with Snake, Simon, and Richter in Smash as fighters, we deserve at least one or two more Konami characters from different IPs, and Goemon is a perfect fit.
Plus, imagine the stage, the music...
I don't know if Konami has any interests in 3D Platformers anymore, but if they decided to revive Mystical Ninja I would be pretty hyped for it.
This one would be hard to reply to, please don't hate me for this..
Well, first thank you so much for concidering supporting Goemon. Geno is a Sakurai desire so that's a given, and Banjo is most probably (but only according to PapaGenos source). BUT seriously, I'd never take any charcater over Goemon. I don't even comprehend why would anyone concider Geno over Goemon, let alone Banjo. They're good, but honestly not as. I respect your wishes, as you do mine. I really think Goemon is the most deservant though, not because I'm a fan (that certainly adds to it) but because there's no other with such a rich history.
Please take my question with good intentions in mind, wouldn't Sasuke make a better Geno?
I'd like to throw Goemon carrying Ebisu is the Banjo here but that's a stretch.
I'm literally just saying that once my two most-wanted are in, Goemon will become my new most-wanted. That's it.
I like Goemon, I played the **** outta Mystical Ninja on my 64 when I was a kid. I just like Geno and Banjo a lot more, and I wanna support them first until they get in. After that, I'll support Goemon however I can.
So in your opinion, may I know what made them more special than Goemon? (since you like all three).
I also went through all these games, but I ended at Goemon (apparently). Is Geno a revival call or it's purely Geno?
Once Geno and Banjo are in (and as of right now, their chances look pretty good), Goemon has my full support for DLC. I think with Snake, Simon, and Richter in Smash as fighters, we deserve at least one or two more Konami characters from different IPs, and Goemon is a perfect fit.
Plus, imagine the stage, the music...
The music from that game is amazing. I particularly like the final level.
I really think Goemon is the most deservant though, not because I'm a fan (that certainly adds to it) but because there's no other with such a rich history.
Goemon does have a rich history, but that history is mostly only known in Japan because 5/6 of the amount of the Goemon games were only released in Japan, but I'm sure you already know that. Goemon is my most wanted character and I truly believe he deserves to be up there with Snake and Simon on the battlefield.
Goemon music is always good. Even as a groove :)
May I say I love you XD
I know how badly Goemon is known west side, am not giving up on him for that though. I have some JP side contacts, they're still holding.. with a higher expectation though.
Can't believe I'm not on this list yes, so count me in!
Yeah, that's mainly what hurts Goemon's chances, his series is not globally popular. Bomberman being down could give him a chance, though, if only as DLC.
They are in EU and JP (of course), but not that in NA unfortunately. He is popular in NA, but apparently way overshadowed.
Edit: Oh man I missed and double posted. Is there's a way I can join my last post with this one.
It's Konami's fault that Goemon is overlooked and obscure here in the States. They didn't really try to commercialize Legend of the Mystical Ninja/Ganbare Goemon 1, Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon/Ganbare Goemon 5, and Goemon's Great Adventure/Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon 2/Ganbare Goemon 6 here at all.
Honestly I can't think of any Konami characters better than Goemon if we get another one. Alucard and Bomberman are Assists.
Also if Goemon happens just put in the entire OST of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and I'll be pleased. Even if it is a little short, that's probably among the top 5 N64 3D platformers, or maybe even top 3 (with a good chance of being the best). I'll be trying out the 2D sequel someday.
If I had to say what are the top 5 3D N64 platformers, I'd say...
  1. Banjo-Tooie
  2. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (Fun Fact! This is one of the few 3D N64 games able to run at 60FPS at any point, which are the intro sequence, certain cutscenes, and Impact battles except for the final one.)
  3. Banjo-Kazooie
  4. Donkey Kong 64
  5. Super Mario 64
I like the idea of a Goemon/Ebisumaru/Yae/Sasuke quadruple transformation fighter the most.
I see you put Banjo-Tooie and Mystical Ninja at the top of your list, a man of great taste. I highly recommend checking out the sequel Goemon's Great Adventure, it's the best side scroller on the N64 and my most favorite N64 game of all time.
I'm literally just saying that once my two most-wanted are in, Goemon will become my new most-wanted. That's it.
I like Goemon, I played the **** outta Mystical Ninja on my 64 when I was a kid. I just like Geno and Banjo a lot more, and I wanna support them first until they get in. After that, I'll support Goemon however I can.
Most of his games do not require english, I would "find" a way to give them a shot. And they translated the two RPGs on the NES. So much Goemon goodness.
Fair on the support. I support Goemon first (now Ridley is in). I also support Banjo. Goemon and Banjo were my childhood. Once the N64 mini is released, I will buy it. And if Goemon is not on it, i will hack it.
The music from that game is amazing. I particularly like the final level.
The "oh my stage" song? It is epic.
I love the n64 games. That is why I ripped most of the 3d models from it. for recommendations, I would also recommend the PSX recycling game annnnnd I think the Future Goemon Game has some awkward charm to it. Oh. and atleast try the two RPG's. I would recommend cheats as they are grindy. But give them a shot.
I think Goemon is at the top of the list. I did see someone suggest Frogger, which would be great if it is the old version, being nothing more than a frog. But after Goemon.
For 3D platformers, Mystical Ninja is up there. It is just so soothing and can be blown out in a solid afternoon. I love playing it and the music, even to this day. It is in my top 10.
As much work as it would take to make it a reality, having the Fab Four as swappable would mean the world to me.
Also, I'm willing to bet Hironobu Kageyama and Ichiro Mizuki are dying for an excuse to reprise their MNSG songs.
I should add that the recycling game is the one with the foreigner with an Earth hat. The one with the two guys replacing Sasuke and Yae is decent, too.
The only PSX game that's hot garbage is the one that gives Impact mechs to everyone, though it does have some killer songs.
That is true. It is really bad. I did beat it though. I loved what they did with the mech battles. I think that was a great improvement that could go somewhere. But other then those, they were bad.
I did like the game with Goroku and Baben, but it was more RPGish, and harder to follow without a guide. But still fun.
You are right. the level leading up to Oh my stage is pretty good.
True, but we're here to prove otherwise. That he's still on demand. Some might not like this but one of the main reasons is Kojima himself not Konami (partially). Resources were drawn to Metal Gear so hard. Now (hopefull), it's a new Konami (or the old coming back). They want to revive their "old" IPs, they started with Bomberman (Global appeal for 1st try). and it was a success. Guess who we want next? definitely Goemon. I'm trying to make sure they know that. You all as fans should too. Maybe they'll start with a Smash DLC, who knows. We have to work for it though.
A correction if I may. Goemon series ended on a 4 parter on SFC/SNES. You may call the 2 on 64 a 5 n 6, but actually they're simply new titles
Oh man you're naming my wishes. But I'll say, we have to take note that the SFC games are the most popular in japan. So expect moves and music from those games. They're great, don't worry about it.
Thanks for that fun fact, didn't know that. A plus to an already great game.
Thanks for joining the crew of All-in for Smash (Quad Poof).
Since we're in the subject of music. Have you fans heard this great piece already?
This is so recent btw. Just proving that Goemon is still on demand "in the west" despite many of the fans not showing it. That's what you miss Sakurai for lending too much ear to the internet :/
And the two on PlayStation what they?
Like Isn’t the one where they all get mechs and every but Goemon become girls. The kids of the original cast?
And the one he gets a white Tiger? A reboot?
Well, you can name or number them as you wish. There were actually 4 on PS and 1 on PS2. That's 5.
The 4th on PS is the New Generation one., and no no one turned into a girl in this game. The group is totally new, well sorta.. The new Goemon is a disciple of the Goemon we love and know (some monster broke his arm, and apparebtly he retired or something like that). Ebisu (not Ebisumaru) IS a girl from the get go (no one knows, but she could be Ebisumaru's daughter. The old Goemon asked the New one to take of her). Sasuke is supposedly the same but upgraded to the version MKII. Yae, I'm not sure, I think that's her cause she's the oldest or at least looks the oldest, OR that's just another spy from the agency that's simply called Yae.
The reboot? If you want to call it that. Yeah, Goemon's earlier days. Looked awesome though.
