My first tourney/approach problems

Hey all;

So this weekend I did it. Entered my first true smash tourney. Had a blast and I did better than I expected! I ended up finishing 9th out of 30. My 2 loses came to the #3 and #7 players, so I have no regrets. :)

Anyway, I was really boggled with the #7 I played. I was clearly just outmatched by the 3 (Diddy Kong), but the 7 used Wolf and I feel like the main reason I lost was inexperience.

My question is...how do you all find the best way to approach projectile spammers are? More specifically, projectiles that stop/affect the spin charge like Wolf/Falco's lasers? He basically camped and shot lasers the entire match and it really through off my game.

While he was very skilled at dodging/punishing me when I finally did approach, I feel like I was clearly missing a good way to approach and attack the laser spammer.

Any tips/ideas/strategies would be incredible

Good job on your first tourney.

IMO it takes a lot of experience to adjust well to Wolf's style. You just need to learn to sorta expect he'll laser whenever he's safe to do so, and you just gotta jump around and avoid them. The invinicibility frames at the start of side-B's hop can go through a laser, but it's ridiculously hard, and you'll rarely have a chance where that will be spaced properly so that the Wolf can't actually just hit you anyway once you've gone through the laser.

I also found Wolfs confusing because so many of his moves reposition his hurtbox; like they move him around the stage and w/e. With experience you can punish a lot of what he does, though.

I never really fought a good Wolf (I'm so inexpierenced). Great performance on your first tournament.

Now this might not always work, but I'd say ASCCancel is the best approach, because of the OMNOMNOMNOM frames when nearing the ground, and the shield blocks any lasers as well. Then jump OoS and ASCC again, untill your at Wolf. Either ASC his face, or ASCC right in front of him and grab. Don't give Wolf time to breath or position himself to camping. If you can't find a way to approach, run right trough them. The 12% will add up, but it's better than taking 10 shots failing approaches.

*pshields are always better.

Laser? run, shield
Laser2,3,4? walk, shield
okay, you get past the lasers, close range time.

Don't just go for the attack right away, because that's obvious and will get you spotdodged. Even if you're "approaching" (which is what they think you're doing as you're getting closer), see if he moves first. Just keep your finger ready on the shield button in case he throws out a F-smash, but if he spotdodges as you get closer, then jump behind and B-air or jump over > delayed N-air, or just walk up and shield>delayed grab.

F-smash? stand, shield(RELEASE AS SOON AS HE HITS YOU)> F-tilt/grab // SH backwards, ASC forward.

etc.

Homing attack

It rises above the lazer's route, and it can hit wolf/falco mid-shot animation

follow from there :)

No.

Just no.

Homing Attack should be used sparingly.

Thank you CiTH.

Trying to APPROACH with Homing Attack (HA) when faced with spam is just BEGGING for punishment. The point of spamming a projectile is to get you to approach, and approaching with HA might just be the worst thing ever. That move has a LOT of ending lag so all he has to do is shield > punish.

You'd be making it much too easy for him :/

Along with what was already said, a homing attack may work once in a blue moon as a mix up, but if the opponent sees it coming AT ALL, it has so much ending lag his Wolf will destroy poor Sonic.

im sure that wolf will literally destroy sonic immediatley after being pushed/hit from the HA

just start it the moment you see his hand reach back to whip out the gun, it usually hits for me

*EDIT*

To clarify, I really only fight wolfs who lazor spam near the edge....so in other situations this could be crap.

IF you do it to an edge-camping Spammer, the worst that will happen is you either miss, and you fall a bit, or you push (wolf) in his shield so that he's ledge grabbing

walking and shielding is better.

That way, if you get close and Wolf attacks or rolls, you can just block it and do something more useful, like grab. Or D-tilt.

It's punishable, just really hard to punish on Lag-Fi.

But Tenki is pretty pro at Lag-Fi so...lol

It's all prediction.

9_9; after playing offline for a while, if I play on wifi, I'm usually trying to play reactive, and it makes me hate wifi.

But if you play on prediction and just predict when they'll spotdodge or do whatever, it becomes a little more fun, because it's more of a guessing game instead of a "asd;flkvjzx;lvkj i saw that and got hit because of lag" johnfest.

Something funny is jumping at cat when he's recovering, then doing a reverse spring + B-air/U-air

Lol, it happened with Fizzy too, but then, suddenly it got fixed after like 3 tries and then we had some good matches where I lost, lol.
