I thought it'd be fitting to share this here. I'll just copy/paste the post I made in the pictures thread:

Thought I'd share my drumset project here. So, I'm a drummer, and I've been working on collage work on my set. It's an old set from the 70's, I believe, handed down to me by my father. I always liked the idea of personalizing your instrument/art, so I thought this would be a good way to make my set unique. Well, it isn't finished yet, but here's what I've got so far. Warning, pictures may be enormous:

I've made a bit more progress on the bass drum since that picture, but I'm back at school now so it will be awhile before I can finish it up. I've also touched up on what's pictured there, I felt like there were some so-so spots. All-in-all this is a fun project, just tedious and time-consuming, haha. This is also my first time ever doing collage work, so it may not be... good. Doesn't really bother me, I guess. The main point is that I did it, haha. I definitely think the floor tom came out better than the high tom, and the bass drum is coming along very nicely. The floor tom has that earthy look I was going for, and the high tom is more... trippy, I guess. Oh well, I'm rambling.

I will hopefully finish it when I'm home for spring break.

That's actually pretty cool. How long has this taken so far?

I'm also wondering if the pictures you used for collage had any specific meaning, or were you just finding stuff that had a certain color scheme/earthy/trippy look lol.

It's hard to put a number on time. The first two drums took a few months, but I was doing it pretty casually, touching up a little bit here and there. The majority of the first drum was done in one sitting. I'd get motivated to work on it, sit down and start cutting/shaping/gluing... then 30 minutes later I'm bored and stop, haha. If I was really determined and had a time restriction, I could probably get each drum done in two or three days (the bass drum will definitely take longest, it's pretty big). I'm also not counting the gathering phase, where I got all the material I'm working with. Nor am I counting taking the hardware off, putting it back on, retuning the drums, glossing it, etc. Those don't take too much time, though; the majority of it is the gluing phase.

As far as the material used, it's mostly out of art/fashion magazines, natural geographic and such. For the most part it's just anything I come across that fits a certain theme I'm going for (especially on the floor tom, where I started to kinda know what I was doing). On the floor tom there is a lot of Native American art, but one personal thing in particular is the bar code I put on it. It's actually the bar code from an Rx Bandits concert ticket. They are a very important band to me, and that was from their last tour before breaking up/going on hiatus. So I have a pretty strong emotional connection to that. The bass drum has been using a lot of odd art I found out of a Juxtapose magazine a friend gave me. I forget the artists name (I'm an ***), but I really like his work. Highlights would be the naked clown chick. Really the way I've been tackling it is I pick a focal point and image, and just work around it, looking more for textures and colors than images.
