Being a good little conformist
In today’s Dojo update, Sakurai shows us another returning mode from Melee: Multi-Man Brawl (formerly, of course, Multi-Man Melee). Rather than fighting polygons or wireframes, though, this time you’ll be fighting scores of Alloys.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/various21_080108f-l.jpg" /></p>

At a glance, this mode appears to be virtually identical to its Melee counterpart:
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/various21_080108a-l.jpg" /></p>
As a number of Smash fans know, these “Fighting _____ Teams” have a history of being heavily modeled off of playable characters. In Super Smash Bros., the polygon team had counterparts in each of the playable characters (even if they didn’t always resemble those characters closely–see Kirby, for example). In Melee, there were Male and Female Wireframes, whose models and standard attacks were modeled after Captain Falcon and Zelda, respectively. (Neither polygons nor wireframes had any special attacks.)

Bearing this precedent in mind, we can take a look at the different alloys and draw some comparisons:
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/various21_080108b-l.jpg" /></p>
The Red Alloy certainly resembles Captain Falcon, even though he hasn’t yet been confirmed as a playable character (not that I doubt he will be). The shoulder pads certainly make it look a lot like Falcon, anyway, and the alloy’s stance resembles Falcon’s model.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/various21_080108c-l.jpg" /></p>
The Blue Alloy too still resembles Zelda, though a number of people seem to think it could also be Zero Suit Samus. I think the color might be making that the more obvious of the two to choose from, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they stuck with Zelda.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/various21_080108d-l.jpg" /></p>
The Yellow Alloy looks a lot like Mario to me, based on his size and proportions. I would assume the horns are just aesthetic and don’t actually play a role in fighting it (also suggesting that the original model doesn’t need to have horns, either).
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/various21_080108e-l.jpg" /></p>
The last alloy you’ll have to fight is the Green Alloy. I think Sakurai puts it best:
<blockquote>Green Alloy! It may look like Kirby, but it’s not him!</blockquote>
Of course it’s “not him,” it’s a Green Alloy. But Sakurai doesn’t make mention of any of the model-analysis above, so it’s definitely reasonable to think that the Green Alloy, as its appearance suggests, is indeed based off of Kirby.

Sakurai is continuing the theme of co-op play with Multi-Man Brawl as well, as it turns out you’ll be able to play with a friend either in person or online.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/various21_080108g-l.jpg" /></p>
One interesting tidbit here is that Sakurai reveals the “With Friends” menu for the first time. Although neat to finally see, it does seem to suggest that only Home Run Contest and Multi-Man Brawl will be available for online co-op play. Target Smash and Adventure Mode, though offering co-op play, are nowhere to be found on the menu.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/various21_080108h-l.jpg" /></p>
Not a bad update on the whole; I think I’ll like the Fighting Alloy Team a bit more than I cared for the wireframes. It’s a bit of a shame to see that these are the only modes you’ll be able to play online, but thinking it through, Subspace with a friend over the Internet might get a bit too involved. Choosing whose game to play through, for example, could get complicated or confusing, but since you can do it in person it might’ve been nice to be able to do it online. Target Smash, though, could be treacherous, depending on how the game handles lag. Since the whole point of the mode is to break targets quickly, it would seem that accomplishing that in online play would be too much to ask for.

Amazing update! Good to know that we get new enemies, I like their look.

Edit: This game made by Sakurai aswell, looks like the idea to the Alloys colours

I'm glad you posted that, the Yellow Alloy in particular looks like he was ripped straight from Meteos, and the Green Alloy has some similarities to some of the other aliens as well.

All in all, I like this update, I had a competition with my friend to see who could get the most KOs in endless mode by character and in total. That was fun, but of course I had to be careful because I had the earlier version of Melee and some of the "border" characters had a glitched way of saving your scores.

Since they released a discreet version to fix that, I'm assuming that won't be a problem this time.

The alloy team rocks. Still cool but creepy.

Weird how the alloys dont have a percent mark, but its clear it is actually damage percent because Sonic is kicking the Red Alloy and he has a number.

If the horns DO matter, I'm thinking "The Masked Man"

First Polygons, than wire frames, now Alloys? What other goodies could possibly be better.

I like how Sakurai is taking old Super Smash Bros. features and remaking them better than ever.

i like how you can do this co-op. i have to agree with the character analysis with the alloy guys. i think the blue one is still zelda though, not ZSS.

the only thing i'm going to say about this update is this pretty much means there is no online co-op Subspace Emissary. it doesn't show up in the With Friends menu.

other than that, the new team looks good. glad to see more variety this time around, rather than just a male and a female fighting you

The interesting thing is that these things look like our old friends the Wireframes in armor. We can see the wireframe model underneath, primarily at the midsection. Interesting to note because of thier name.

An alloy is a mixture of two or more metals...and these are mixtures of the Fighting Polygon team (kinda) and the Wireframes. Therefore an Alloy. (NOTE: Not my idea...someone else here said it, but it bears repeating)

As if it could be handled, the lag would be unbearable.

I don't think the alloys are based off of specific CHARACTERS, but rather body types.

Red alloy=CF, Ganondorf, other "humans"
Blue Alloy=Peach, Zelda, other humanoid females.
Yellow Alloy=Mario, Lucas, Fox, other "child" characters
Green Alloy=Kirby, Jigglypuff, and other "head with legs" characters.
Of course, not all body styles are covered, but some chars like DK are very specific. And I think it's more for a difference in knockback etc rather than attack styles.

It does kinda bug me how they broke the pattern though. Polygon->Wireframe->?
Then again, I wouldn't know where to go from there unless it was sprites or something lame.

this update is pretty awesome. I wanna see what people speculate each one to be. It would be funny if they were all original though

PM if you're adding me!
I have some different opinions on those Alloys:

Blue Alloy = Peach - As far as I know, Zelda can't float like Blue Alloy does, unless they changed her jump style.

Yellow Alloy = Animal Crosser - If it was Mario, it would've had something reminiscent to him, like a cap. And about that screenshot were Yellow Alloy's falling like Mario, Animal Crosser crosser could possibly have the same fall.

Green Alloy = Jigglypuff/Tamagon - If it's "not Kirby", my first guess has to be Jigglypuff, but if that horn is reminiscent to somebody, It has to be Tamagon. I'm not sure who it is, but we'll know soon enough.

It seems to me that the alloys are a mix of polygon and wireframe. Look at them, they have the polygon bodies, but shinier, and they also have spots where the wirefram is visible.

Never been much of a fan of this mode,
but the alloys look awesome.

So the only mode so far that we know of that doesn't have multiplayer is classic?

and the alloys don't really have to have anything reminiscent of the base-character besides the general body shape. Look at the female wire-frame. She didn't look much like zelda besides the fact that she had a very feminine body shape.

I'm kinda surprised they haven't already created Falcon's character discussion section after this one... I mean, how obvious can it get?

Co-Op play is a wonderful thing, honestly. Multiplayer Multi-man is an incredible idea, it might actually give us a fighting chance to do something substantial with Cruel Melee... er, Brawl. I'm curious though, after one person dies, is it game over for both characters? Or does the other keep going? Hmm, that'd be interesting and add a competitive edge to it.

As a Falco player, I know the first thing I'm going to do once I get my hands on the game.

It'll probably end in disappointment though :(

Hiding in that one place you cant see.
I'm kind of dissapointed to know that they didn't create new types of modes for multi-man brawl. I was hoping they would at least have some new ones to choose from, along with the old of course. I mean it wouldn't be that hard, I guess. But, oh well at least there's new guys to beat up.
Anyone else feel like they should of had new modes, as well as the old ones?

I think the Alloys are a nice new touch!

I also think that the Yellow Alloy reminds me of the mail Animal Crosser, with his horned hat!

I automatically thought animal crossing character when I saw the update. After seeing the meteos box art though, i'm not so sure.

I dunno.. maybe it's just wishful thinking.. but i think the Green Alloy is based more off Jigglypuff. The location of it's spike is exactly where Jigglypuff's little tuft of hair/fur is. Seems more likely to me. Blue is Zero Suit Samus, the body shape and "hair" make it obvious. Red is definitely Captain Falcon. No doubt about it. Yellow.. I dunno. Looks like those Aliens from that "meteos " game posted on the first page. The Animal Crosser also makes sense. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Cool update though.
