Hey, new to smashboards but just recently i've been really getting into smash again. I used to play melee years back semi decently then didn't play for years. Smash 4 has obviously come into my life and I was enjoying it. However now for some reason with training tech and playing FG i still get shafted. It doesn't help that my mentality is heavily competitive so I get tilted quite easily atm.

I know that's something i can work on and i have been trying to recently. But I just don't know how to improve from here, i've scoured youtube for all the tech and all the knowledge i can to play better, watched prof matches over and over. It just doesn't seem to help. I'm at a loss here.

If anyone has any ideas it'd be great to hear them because my motivation to play is at an all time low.

Cheers :D

(P.S: been back into Smash for about 3 months or so)
(P.P.S: Had played melee for at least 2-3 years maybe more)

If you are able to attend locals and smashfests do so and stop playing For Glory.

For some, like me, For Glory messes with my reaction speed in an offline environment.

I'm a WI-FI Warrior, but once I got a taste of offline I grew to dislike online rather quickly even though it was my go to training grounds when I was not in training mode.

If you have not heard of it yet, there is a website called smashcords. They have a Smash 4 section which is split into servers for the entire roster as well miscellaneous servers.

I think may be where you may want to get your character information from since a lot of it is there.

As for Smash 4 vods, can you give me a list of the tech and knowledge videos you watched? Just the names only. That way I can link ya to other videos that I think are good that you may have missed.

Edit: A good of the Smash 4 community has moved to discord. Also when in training mode, try to get familiar with the legal stages and the current ruleset. A lot of For Glory may give you a rude awakening if Final Destination is banned.

Umm, Mainly videos from MySmashCorner on things like B Reversing, Perfect Pivots, Foxtrots, Dash Dancing, Extended Dash Dancing

Then also an IZAW video on "The Art of Marth" from the series that he's done on lots of characters, just to try and grasp a better understanding of frame data etc with visuals. and to see if he plays much differently than from what i remember in melee. He does.

I forgot to mention earlier tbf, but i also have a lot of experience offline as in uni i can't play online because of port blocking and such. And there's a bunch of guys there at VGS (video game society) who play smash and i play regularly with them. And I win against people who are no doubt better than me normally, or rather used to be. But when i come across the same level of skill in FG i just **** up and fumble idk. I've had plenty of exp on different legal stages, Dreamland, Battlefield, Pokemon stadium etc etc.

Thanks for the link to the smashcords deal btw. Its pretty cool :D

Also in relation to tourneys, i never feel like im up to par to enter them, idk maybe its an anxiety thing of my own skill or i don't feel like i've pumped enough hours in idk

My story is similar to yours in some ways: began playing Melee myself in 2005 and returned to it in 2008 when Brawl was released but I am nowhere close to tournament-level myself. I, too, enjoy playing Smash 4 since I picked it up a year and a half ago. I, being a 56-year-old female Smasher, avoid competitive play but grind advanced tech every once in a while.

As for what you can do to stay motivated? Keep practicing and stop with the competitive mindset for right now. There is nothing wrong with being competitive about the game, but the real goal is to enjoy it. And instead of For Glory, you can try to find opponents here or better yet, you can go to Smashcords where there are many groups willing to help you get better.

And with that, good luck on your path to improvement.

Pokemon Stadium may not be legal at all events unless it is the Omega version.

The stages that I noticed you left out were Smashville, Town & City, and Lylat. Those are legal at many tournies you may attend off campus since they are seen as the norm.

I'd suggest practicing on Lylat since a good amount of players complain about the stage for various reasons like: the platforms, stage tilting, falling through the stage, and how if you are un-prepared or in a bad position offstage, your attemptnto recover will fail due to the tilting and the underside of the stage usually causing recoveries to not travel to ledge or instead direct them the wrong way.

Gonna link a lot of videos if you would like to check them out.

Art of series by Izaw: It's not the character version but one instead for Smash 4 in general. This link takes you to a playlist. I would like you to watch the first 5 videos in the list. The 5th is agreed by different players on discord to help them with the neutral game.

Beefy Smash Doods:

This playlist contains tons of useful Smash 4 info about tech, characters, etc. Not all of the videos in the playlist are about improving at Smash 4, and a few are dedicated to doubles.

I'll point out the videos I think you should watch, so you can keep with Smash 4 common knowledge. I'll be using the titles in the thumbnail pictures to name them in the list below.

That's a ton of videos. They made a lot over Smash 4's lifetime.

Be sure to take notes on which information you want to remember, because you may forgot some, I know I have.

Recently BFD, has been making videos showcasing character specific tech among other things like metal blade combos for the majority of the cast, to help raise awareness of character tech, that may be exclusive or a character discord or missed on smash reddit.

If you would like to be aware of those, you should visit the character servers, ask them for their obscure or character techniques and hopefully they should help you. If not, try again later.

Here's some more information.

There is this website which features almost all of the frame data in the game. Contains a lot of useful and miniscule informaton along with Smash 4 memes sprinkled about waiting to be found.

He also has a mobile app which features more memes and is mainly used for looking up character frame data on the go.

Disclaimer: Not all information on the website is in the app.

By the way, what is your discord username and discord number tag? I would like to talk to ya there. Also discord has a mobile app too.

I personally don't really think For Glory is the place to go for smash. I'd recommend finding people of similar or greater skill than you and play friendlies, even if you are limited to online playing smashville and BF etc are much better than just FD. Melee netplay is growing as well if that still interests you but if you are more interested in just sm4sh that's fine too. Locals if you have them. Even with decent internet sm4sh/wii u's online is honestly pretty garbage and that in itself can mess you up and be really frustrating to deal with.
