I wonder if u can mod a controller so that u can shffl quicker. I know that it sounds strange but I think it can be done

Many top players have modded controllers. You won't be able to SHFFL faster, that is character dependent, but it could make things like inputting the L-cancel easier.

I took the spring out of my L-button and asked Plank about it (for pound4). To lazy to go find his response but he basically said whether or not that's an illegal controller mod, it would be to difficult to enforce (as you'd have to check every controller and make sure they're legit) so it doesn't matter.

I could have sworn modded controllers were banned from tournys.
Some tourneys probably do. It really depends on how you have modded the controller. For example someone may want less or more resistance on their L/R triggers. Most tournament organizers would be cool with something like that. I have heard tell tale rumors of mods that automatically L-cancel and Fastfall for you. Something like that would be banned in tournaments(Although automatically Fastfalling whenever your in the air seems as though it would be more of a handicap than a help as this would greatly hinder your DI and your general ability to recover.)

Modded controllers are banned in MOST tourneys. Ex: controller mods that have the controller that works for you. Like those MACRO buttons they have on some madcats. Put in a certain button input and it does it for you.

I thought no springs was banned also until I read this thread....

Doesn't losing the spring make it easier to power shield? If not why do ya'll do it?

The modded controller rule is remeniscent to the coaching rule in that in the 2 years I've been going to tournaments, I've never seen anyone thrown out for either. I've seen coaching (like whispering in some ones ear coaching, not shouting **** for hype coaching) once.

As for the spring, I don't light shield with L so it's pointless to need to go through that entire process just to l-cancel or wave dash or tech...even though you can l-cancel without going all the way down iirc.

This is true.

You guys will laugh at this but at one point I thought about taking out my L button (never did though). I never use it and there are a few times where I accidentally hit it while moonwalking haha

speaking of which, to z target in oot on the gamecube, you need an analogue L button

Chisel out the plastic around your control stick into a circle instead of an octagon for optimal DI.

I was considering that as well,

but then like a month later I started practicing shield stopping with marth. Like the active kind, where its all the time and used for spacing. Turns out I use L.

Also I found it easier to L cancel m2s Instant double jump cancels with L.

Lets just say Im glad I didnt take it out.

I saw Magus post on that. I don't think that should be legal haha
Lol I think of it more as a joke. I'm not sure how well that would actually work. It'd be interesting if someone actually tried it out though, did the experiments Magus did for DI angles, and see if they could notice a difference.

Also it occured to me that there already are controllers with a circle around the control stick instead of the octagon. I think the Superpad is like this. Even though that controller sucks hard for Melee, you might be able to get more precise angles at the full tilt of the control stick. It'd also be interesting to know how many angles the controller is even sensitive to, and how far it's sensitive to tilt.

any modification like taking out springs are so minimal they are almost negligible and should barely be considered a "mod"

having a button that auto-waveshines on the other hand is another story.

short hopping is pretty auto as it is. having button that just short hops wouldnt even be an advantage enough for me to care.

having a single button that did frame perfect auto short hopped, fastfalled, l-canceled nairs with fox is where i'd say the problem arises.

how would you do all these things though?
I think they'd get more in the way then anything else cause You'd have to retrain your self to just press this magical button then do all the other stuff.

OH really. Ppl mess short hops up all the time when they try to get more technical wit the approach.

Having one less component to worry about would make a big diff. You would never miss SHs no matter what you are doin.

You wouldnt have to retrain for an auto short hop. You still gotta do everything else.

I took the spring out of the L in one of my controllers just for SSB64 since it's on the Wii now (Virtual Console anyway, instead of the hack one). And I guess I can use that if I play brawl too. I never use L otherwise, so even though it kind of helps power shielding, I'd have to relearn to shield just with L, not to mention on a different controller.

if this was in response to me, it wouldnt be too hard.

In halo 2, theres a glitch called double shot which lets you shoot the Battle Rifle twice really fast, and the better players had the ability to double shoot twice in a row (a 4 shot) and kill their opponents much faster than normal, its basically an auto kill once you line up the sights and can do it perfectly.

there was a player who modded his controller to have a single button added just above the R trigger to performed the button combination every time. fyi, the full combination is R,R,X,YY,RR,X,YY.

anyway, people found out about it and he was banned form the mlg circuit. My point is, its not terribly difficult to relearn how to play the game if you have a button that does all the "win" for you.

even decent players rarely miss short hops, atkeast not enough to matter.

I'm planning on modding my purple GCN controller to give it a white shell from this bootlegged crap rip off GCN controller. The white shell is legit, but the circuitry is a load of ********. All I need it the proper screw driver and I'm set.

Cactuar's controller has no X button. Same thing with mine. Also i used to accidentally hit R sometimes, but I never use R so while I plug my controller in I hold R down so I can't accidentally hit it while playing. I wanna put my X button back in but have been too lazy lol. Cause I never hit X on accident and it helps me wiggle out of grabs faster.

Edit : The screwdriver you need to open GC controllers is only like .89c with free shipping from

Dealextreme.com Search for "triwing screwdriver"

Do they sell them at Radioshack? I'm too lazy to order crap online.
I've never seen them for sale anywhere except online. When I first was looking for one, none of the local technology or hardware stores had even heard of a tri-wing.

Also, one of my crewmates had a white rip-off GCN controller like you mentioned earlier, but the shell didn't quite match up with other official controllers. The bootleg ones are made of such cheap plastic that they warp easily.

It looked pretty official when I ordered it...

Then the analog got f*cked up bad when I played one round of Brawl (I think that was a message...).
